God brings water out of a rock twice to save the thirsty Israelites during their journey in the wilderness. The first time happens early in the Exodus at Rephidim and the second time happens years later at Kadesh. The people lack water. They get angry at Moses and complain. God tells Moses to take his staff and strike the rock at Horeb. Moses strikes the rock in front of the elders and water gushes out for everyone to drink. The community again has no water and rebels against Moses and Aaron. Moses grows angry, yells at the people and strikes the rock twice with his staff instead of speaking to it. Water pours out in abundance and the people drink, but God tells Moses and Aaron they disobeyed and will not be allowed to enter the Promised Land.
