Saul gathered the army of Israel at Mount Gilboa, but grew terrified upon seeing the enemy camp. Saul tried to seek divine guidance through dreams, sacred lots and prophets, but God refused to answer him. Earlier in his reign, Saul had expelled all mediums and necromancers from Israel in accordance with biblical law. Disguised under the cover of night, Saul and two attendants traveled to find the woman in Endor. The woman called up a spirit, recognized it as Samuel, and realized her visitor was Saul himself. The apparition of Samuel rebuked Saul for his disobedience, telling him that God had torn the kingdom away and given it to David. Samuel prophesied that Israel would fall to the Philistines and that Saul and his sons would die in battle the next day. The prophecy was fulfilled the following day at Mount Gilboa where Saul took his own life.
