Today we are learn about authority given to us as followers of Jesus. It is clear from our verse that there's an enemy to our life in this world among all other dangers that also want to harm us. Jesus Christ remind us that He however has given us authority over all these.
When somebody has authority, they need to exercise it for its power to be manifested. It has its requirements that defines how we exercise this kingdom's authority given to us. Authority also can be misused: used for purpose that it wasn't given for. Lastly, authority is limited to a jurisdiction: has boundaries where it can be exercise.
The next verse is very clear about requirements. We must ensure that we rejoice more in having our names written in Heaven. We should not just rejoice that we have authority that give us power over evil spirits but rather in our sonship in God's kingdom. This is the main thing a Christian must remember.
In Matthew 18:8, we are reminded of seriousness of ensuring our names are written in Heaven. "So if your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one hand or one foot than to be thrown into eternal fire with both of your hands and feet." Yes, we must hate sin which separate us from God. The story of King Saul expounds more on the same. He had authority given lost because He refused to obey God. He misused the authority and missed everything even for his own generation. Be careful child of God , this authority is not yours but God's and Has all authority to take it back like He did to Saul and from there evil attacked him.
About how to exercise it, the next chapter of Luke 11 is important. Jesus teaches us to pray. Prayer is what connects us to the power source. During prayer we use our tongues to declare what we have believed in our hearts and learned in God's Word (the Bible). Daniel's story illustrate this more clearly. He knew the requirements of God but he had to pray to overcome some powers that even held answers to his prayers. This is why Jesus teaches on persistent prayer. Pray untill something happen! Daniel prayed untill Heaven sent angels to fight for him. The lions couldn't injure him nor would fire consume his friends!
Dear child of God, it is time for you to wake-up and exercise authority given to you. It is time to take you Bible , read it, declare what you want to be as if it is already. Declare victory in that situation and over your life. You're not a looser but more than conqueror in Jesus name. You belong to God who gives all authority to overpower every other power in the universe. Put on your faith as garment and put on the whole armor of God as written in Ephesians 6. In Jesus name, Amen.
