"For there is no good tree that bears bad fruit, nor, on the other hand, a bad tree that bears good fruit. [44] For each tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush. [45] The good person out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil person out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart."
Legalistic teachings try to make the bad or good fruit to be about performance, behaviors. In context, Jesus wasn't talking about our deeds at all. He's talking about what we say because what we say reveals what is in our hearts.
The word "heart," used in the verse above, was translated from the Greek word καρδία (pronounced kar-dee'-ah), Kardia, and it means, according to Strong's Exhaustive Concordance, "the heart that is (figuratively) the thoughts or feelings (mind); also (by analogy) the middle."
So, Jesus was saying that what we think, what we contemplate, what we emotionally value, are all collected in the center of our being. They become what we are because it is what we are full of. Your collection in your Kardia is the treasure you carry within you. It may be a treasure of good things or bad things.
If what is in your Kardia is good, good things come out of your mouth. Likewise, bad speech comes out of people who have bad things stored up within them.
Jesus instructed some legalistic Pharisees, "Either assume the tree to be good as well as its fruit good, or assume the tree to be bad as well as its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit. You offspring of vipers, how can you, being evil, express any good things? For the mouth speaks from that which fills the heart. [35] The good person brings out of his good treasure good things; and the evil person brings out of his evil treasure evil things."

Jesus was teaching that the good or bad fruit from a person isn't about their behavior. It's what they say, because what they say reveals what is in their hearts. Our Kardia is a storehouse or treasure chest of what we have allowed inside us.
There is an acronym that is common among computer users and programmers - GIGO, and it stands for "Garbage In - Garbage Out." The Lord says that our Kardia works in the same way. Put bad programming in, allow bad information to get inside us, and bad output will be the result. On the other hand, insure good input to your Kardia and the results – what comes out of your mouth – will be good.
Ultimately, you will get either desirable or undesirable outcomes based on what you are exposing yourself to. If it comes out you, it must have already been inside of you. If it is inside, you let it in.
We need to monitor and control our inputs, because bad things that come out of our mouths can get us into trouble.
We read in Proverbs 4:23-27 NASB, "Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life. [24] Put away from you a deceitful mouth And put devious speech far from you. [25] Let your eyes look directly ahead And let your gaze be fixed straight in front of you. [26] Watch the path of your feet And all your ways will be established. [27] Do not turn to the right nor to the left; Turn your foot from evil."
It all starts by monitoring what we are allowing ourselves to be exposed to and filtering out, blocking and avoiding exposing ourselves to evil things. What goes into our hearts, our Kardia, through the gates of our eyes and ears is kept there in our storehouse and either pollues us or edifies us.
Jesus said in Matthew 15:17-19 NASB, "Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is eliminated? [18] But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and those things defile the person. [19] For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, acts of adultery, other immoral sexual acts, thefts, false testimonies, and slanderous statements."
