CAN YOU USE THE TOWEL?

I have been thinking about something Jesus did that is easy to read past.

He took a towel.

Not a crown.

Not a microphone.

Not a platform.

A towel.

And He washed the feet of His disciples.

Jesus said:

«“If I, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.”
— John 13:14»

Think about that for a moment.

The Lord and Master chose the position of a servant.

And maybe that challenges something in me.

Because sometimes we say:

“When I get the right opportunity, I'll serve God.”

“When I enter ministry, I'll become more committed.”

“When I have a bigger platform, I'll do something significant.”

But what if your present surroundings are already part of your mission field?

What if the person irritating you is giving you an opportunity to learn patience?

What if the responsibility nobody appreciates is teaching you faithfulness?

What if the person who cannot repay you is giving you an opportunity to love without seeking recognition?

What if that small, boring, unnoticed assignment is training you for something bigger?

Sometimes we are asking God for a microphone when He is putting a towel in our hands.

And honestly, the towel can be harder.

It doesn't attract applause.

Nobody may photograph it.

Nobody may congratulate you.

Nobody may even say thank you.

But Jesus used it.

And if we truly belong to Him, shouldn't His way begin to shape our way?

Your towel may look like:

• Helping someone who cannot help you back.
• Listening when you'd rather walk away.
• Serving your family without complaining.
• Treating a difficult colleague with patience.
• Helping a struggling student.
• Forgiving someone who hurt you.
• Doing a small job excellently when nobody is watching.
• Going beyond what is required because love asks you to.

Jesus said:

«“I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.”
— John 13:15»

There is something else I've been learning.

Sometimes the people around us expose what still needs to be surrendered to Jesus.

The difficult person may expose my impatience.

The ungrateful person may expose my desire for recognition.

The person who disagrees with me may expose my pride.

The demanding person may expose how little patience I actually have.

That doesn't mean we should tolerate abuse or injustice.

But it does mean we can ask:

“Jesus, what are You showing me about me?”

Because Christianity isn't just about changing our location.

It is about allowing Christ to change our hearts.

You don't have to travel somewhere else before becoming a missionary.

Your home is a mission field.
Your workplace is a mission field.
Your school is a mission field.
Your neighbourhood is a mission field.
Your relationships are opportunities to reveal Christ.

And perhaps your greatest ministry opportunity today isn't something dramatic.

Perhaps it is simply the person standing in front of you.

So...

Can you use the towel?

Can you serve when nobody notices?

Can you love when there is no applause?

Can you forgive when you won't receive anything in return?

Can you go the second mile?

Jesus said:

«“If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.”
— Matthew 5:41»

The second mile is often where convenience ends and Christlike love begins.

And maybe before we pray:

“Lord, give me a bigger ministry,”

we should sometimes pray:

“Lord, make me faithful with the ministry already in my hands.”

Before the platform, give me the towel.

Before the influence, give me humility.

Before the bigger assignment, teach me obedience.

Before people see me, teach me to live for You when nobody sees me.

Jesus, I don't want to merely work for You.
I want to become like You.

Show me where I can serve today.

Show me where I need to forgive.

Show me where pride is hiding.

Show me where I have made service about recognition.

And give me grace to pick up the towel.

Because great ministry in the Kingdom often begins with a very small act of obedience.

Who is the “one person” around you today that Jesus may be asking you to serve, love, forgive, or listen to?

You don't have to mention their name.

Just take a moment and ask Jesus about them.
