THE WORD FOR TODAY. MONDAY SEPTEMBER 14, 2O26.
"TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE"
'...I have set before you life and death...choose life...’ Deuteronomy 30:19 NIV
CHOICE IS the greatest power God gave you. Too many of us just accept our lives—we don’t become leaders of ourselves. As a result, we can’t get out of our own way. Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel wrote in 'Souls On Fire' that when you die and go to meet your Maker, you’re not going to be asked why you didn’t become a Messiah or find a cure for cancer. All you’re going to be asked is, ‘Why didn’t you become you? Why didn’t you become all that you are?’ Fulfilling God’s will for your life requires taking responsibility for yourself and your life. How do you do that? By saying yes to God first—then to yourself. Every time you say yes, you open yourself up to your God-given potential and to the greatest of possibilities. If you’re used to saying no, you may find this difficult. If that is true in your case, then at least be willing to say ‘maybe.’ One day a father whose child was chronically ill asked Jesus to heal him. ‘Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!’’’ (Mark 9:23-24 NKJV). If you’re a self-doubter, pray that same prayer. God will answer it. Never forget that you are unique, possessing talents, experiences and opportunities that no one else has ever had—or ever will have. You’re responsible to become all God made you to be, not only for your own benefit but for everyone else's.

*WHEN RESERVED GOD'S BLESSINGS ARE DEFERRED*
*TEXT:* PSALM 89:25-27.
25 I will set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers.
26 He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.
27 Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.
*Timeless Truth:*_"Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build an house unto my name... Behold, a son shall be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest...He shall build an house for my name"_(1 Chronicles 22:8-10).
*INTRODUCTION*
God has prepared and reserved blessings, privileges and divine purposes for everyone of His children. Yet, sometimes, what God has ordained does not manifest at the expected time. Such delay does not mean denial. David had prepared to build the temple and had made all things ready for the construction. However, God did not permit him, but transferred the project to his son to do so because he had shed much blood (1 Chronicles 22:8-10). Elijah was ordained and commanded to anoint both Elisha and Jehu as a matter of privilege. *"And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room"* (1 King 19:16). Elijah could only anoint his successor Elisha while the responsibility of anointing Jehu was shifted to Elisha by divine rearrangement (2 Kings 9:1-13). When someone has favour with God, rather than the person losing what God promised him, God in his sovereignty may decide to transfer the fulfilment of the blessing to someone dear to the person's heart, especially the son.
b. David was chosen and anointed by God, but the full expression of his kingship was preceded by seasons of waiting, rejection and hardship. The text reminds us that God’s promises are certain, but their manifestation may occur according to His sovereign timetable. When reserved blessings are deferred, faith must remain alive, character must be developed and dependence upon God must become stronger. Furthermore, saints must be extra careful so that they will fulfil God's purposes for their lives and ministry.
*1. Divine Reach*
God promised to extend David's influence from the sea to the rivers. This speaks of divine enlargement and influence. He promised David an expansion and prosperity. *"I will set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers"*. The full fulfilment was transferred to his son Solomon. David could not enjoy this fully in his lifetime. 1 Kings 4:24 states that Solomon had dominion over all regions west of the Euphrates River and enjoyed *"peace on all sides round about him"*. 1 Kings 4:25 notes that Judah and Israel lived safely, with everyone dwelling under their own vine and fig tree throughout his lifetime.
This era of rest was built upon the groundwork laid by his father, King David, who subdued surrounding conflicts, but he himself did not fully experience and enjoy them. From the desert where he was confined to take care of the sheep, he came to national prominence. He did not really have any rest as Saul was chasing him from one wilderness to another. His immorality and the consequent family problems created a dark spot in his life and made part of his life unenviable. God's promise of peace, prosperity and expansion which he could have enjoyed was transferred to his son.
b. God can reserve great territories, opportunities, achievements and spheres of influence for His people. However, the promise may preceed the possession by a considerable period. The people to whom He promised might not even enjoy the blessings except the generations that followed if they were careless with those blessings. David was anointed king long before he actually, occupied the throne. Furthermore, a deferred blessing should therefore, not make us conclude that God has forgotten us. God's delay may be preparing us for the dimension of blessing He has already reserved for us. We must continue walking faithfully, while waiting for divine enlargement.
*Question*
What really made David not enjoy the promised blessing that God had to transfer the full manifestation to his son?
*2. Declaration of Relationship*
a. *"He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation"*. The greatest inheritance and blessings anyone can receive from Christ is the blessings of an endowed relationship. Any worshipper, no matter how zealous, who lacks the assurance of a personal relationship with God is in a pitiable and not privileged state.
The greatest blessing is not merely what God gives, but who God is to us. David would recognize God as his Father, his God and the rock of his salvation. When blessings are deferred, God may be drawing us into deeper fellowship with Him.
Waiting seasons can expose whether we desire God Himself or merely God's gifts. A believer who knows God as Father can remain confident even when the promised blessing appears delayed. The relationship sustains the faith until the manifestation arrives.
b. The only route to have God as a Father is simply by receiving Christ as Lord and Saviour. *"As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God"*. The privilege of divine sonship is the greatest privilege any mortal can receive from God in this life. All other lasting and enduring divine blessings flow from this relationship.
*Question*
Do you have the assurance of the Holy Spirit that you are a child of God? If the blessing I am expecting is delayed, will I still confidently call God my Father, my God, and my Rock?
*3. Designated Rise*
a. *"Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth"*
The natural firstborn in a family, as used in the Old Testament, is worthy of double honour in the family compared to other siblings. While the firstborn may retain his position as the first born, the privileges of the firstborn can be transferred to someone else in the family. Reuben was the firstborn in the family of Jacob, but due to incest, he lost the privilege while retaining the title. The authority of the firstborn was transferred to Judah while Joseph received the double portion from Jacob as his two children, Ephraim and Manasseh, were privileged to be added to replace Joseph as tribes in Israel (Genesis 48:22; 49:3,4, 8). However, the concept of firstborn is never restricted to the natural family set up in the Scriptures. The fact that God promised David that *"I will make thee my firstborn"* is an indication that he was not firstborn and neither borne by God, but divine privileged and lifted him to that position, privilege and authority. God also said *"Israel is My son, even My firstborn"* (Exodus 4:22). Obviously, God was referring to Israel as a specially privileged nation above all other nations on earth. So the main thing in firstborn is that of special privilege and portion above all in the same family or comity of nations. Some religions fail to understand this.
God had reserved a position of special honour and authority over all the kings for David, and no human opposition can ultimately cancel God's purpose. However, the manifestation was transferred to his Seed Jesus.
b. Jesus was called the Son of God in several places of the Scriptures. He was called the first begotten of the dead (Revelation 1:5) which means the first person to ever be resurrected from the dead with a resurrected body. He is also called the only begotten Son of God (John 3:16). Nobody in the Bible is given that privilege, honour and authority of being the only begotten Son of God except Jesus. The title shows the special relationship Jesus has with the Father which no other personality has. The repentant believers in Christ are also given the sonship privilege (not firstborn) above all the persons created by God (John 1:12). Christianity and not a religion, but more of living in Father- son relationship with God. David was specially favoured by God that though the promise was not fully manifested during his lifetime, it was transferred to his Seed, the only begotten Son of God.

Are you a child of God? What are the privileges you have that even saints in the Old Testament don't have?

1.Father, strengthen my faith to wait patiently for every blessing and promise You have reserved for me, in Jesus' name .
2.Lord, let every delayed blessing ordained for my life receive divine acceleration according to Your perfect timing, in Jesus' name .
3.Father, deepen my relationship with You during every season of waiting and keep me from seeking Your gifts above Yourself, in Jesus' name .
4.Lord, let every divine purpose concerning our life come to fulfilment and keep Your children from wrongs that will make their blessings to be deferred to others .

*Emperor Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, also called Caligula, actively promoted his own worship during his brief reign as Roman emperor from AD 37 until his assassination in AD 41. He famously demanded and received adoration as a living god. He was quoted as saying, "Remember that I have the right to do anything to anybody". He humiliated his senators by making them run behind his litter or forcing them to fight for his amusement.*
*Unlike Emperor Caligula, David knew his limits as Israel's king. The Lord promised to make him "higher than the kings of the earth" in our text, yet he constantly prayed to God in humility. "He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation". This virtue of constantly depending on God and ascribing greatness and supremacy to Him was what preserved King David on the throne, despite several attempts on his life.*
*Humility comes from the heart. It is a product of grace through heart circumcision. It manifests the virtue of self-abasement and resentment for the praises of men. Unlike popular thinking, where the rich and powerful are said to be inherently proud while the poor and weak are supposedly meek and humble, the state of the heart is the determining factor, and not the richness or emptiness of the pockets. We have seen poor people and even beggars, whose character and boisterous nature are repulsive. And conversely, we have seen people of power and influence maintain such a commodious attitude that draws everyone to them.*
*God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble. Like David, we are bound to remember our little beginnings, no matter what heights we may have attained in life presently. We must, in humility, acknowledge God and ascribe all greatness to Him alone. And if, for any reason, our talents, knowledge and achievements in life inadvertently draw unwarranted attention to us, we should politely insist that God is behind it all. We should avoid big names that kill a puppy. We must reject all adulation and hide ourselves behind the cross whenever the world attempts to deify us.*

Fear is a natural response to danger. It brings torment to the body. This is one of the weapons used by our archenemy (Satan). Fear can be triggered by past experiences, failures, death, insecurity, etc. It is *'False Experiences Appearing Real'.*
However, sin is the greatest tool that provokes fear. Abraham, in our Bible passage, told a lie because of fear. God was not happy with his action. His fear brought punishment upon the women in Abimelech's house.
God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). You have power in the name of Jesus, power in the blood of Jesus, and power in the word of God to conquer in all situations.

True prayer is a way of life, not just for use in cases of emergency. ⏤ Billy Graham
Father, it is not a holy world into which we must now go forth. It is full of sin. We must meet many temptations. Then it is not an easy life into which we have to go. It has its tasks, its duties, its responsibilities, and its conflicts. We shall have our burdens to carry and our duties to do.
Yet we would not refuse to go forth into the world. It is Your voice that calls us forth—and wherever Your voice calls us, we would go without hesitation. We have no strength or wisdom of our own to make us equal to all the work and struggle of the day—but we know that when You send us forth, You will give us all the strength and wisdom we shall need. You have promised that as our days—so shall our strength be.
Fill us with Your grace, that we may be able to move through this evil world without faltering in our faithfulness. We are not of the world, but belong to Heaven, and are citizens of the kingdom of Jesus. Help us to live out here on earth, our true life, the life of Jesus, the life of Heaven. May we be enabled to keep ourselves unspotted from the world. May we live so purely, so earnestly, with such abundant life, that our influence shall be a real force for Jesus.
We ask for grace to make our common weekday work holy and beautiful, with the beauty of Christlikeness. May we be as Jesus to everyone we meet. In our social life, our business, our responsibilities at home, in all our friendships, in our leisure—may we show the sweetness of the love of Jesus. May You keep us, each and all, in all our goings and comings. Bless us—and use us to bless the world. Bring us together in the evening. We ask all these favors for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

The fact that God promised David that *"I will make thee my firstborn"* is an indication that he was not firstborn and neither borne by God, but divine privileged and lifted him to that position, privilege and authority. God also said *"Israel is My son, even My firstborn"* (Exodus 4:22). Obviously, God was referring to Israel as a specially privileged nation above all other nations on earth. Fear is a natural response to danger. It brings torment to the body. This is one of the weapons used by our archenemy (Satan). Fear can be triggered by past experiences, failures, death, insecurity, etc. It is *'False Experiences Appearing Real'.*
However, sin is the greatest tool that provokes fear. Abraham, in our Bible passage, told a lie because of fear. God was not happy with his action. His fear brought punishment upon the women in Abimelech's house.
God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). You have power in the name of Jesus, power in the blood of Jesus, and power in the word of God to conquer in all situations.

Father, it is not a holy world into which we must now go forth. It is full of sin. We must meet many temptations. Then it is not an easy life into which we have to go. It has its tasks, its duties, its responsibilities, and its conflicts. We shall have our burdens to carry and our duties to do.
Yet we would not refuse to go forth into the world. It is Your voice that calls us forth—and wherever Your voice calls us, we would go without hesitation. We have no strength or wisdom of our own to make us equal to all the work and struggle of the day—but we know that when You send us forth, You will give us all the strength and wisdom we shall need. You have promised that as our days—so shall our strength be.
Fill us with Your grace, that we may be able to move through this evil world without faltering in our faithfulness. CHOICE IS the greatest power God gave you. Too many of us just accept our lives—we don’t become leaders of ourselves. As a result, we can’t get out of our own way. Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel wrote in 'Souls On Fire' that when you die and go to meet your Maker, you’re not going to be asked why you didn’t become a Messiah or find a cure for cancer. All you’re going to be asked is, ‘Why didn’t you become you? Why didn’t you become all that you are?’ Fulfilling God’s will for your life requires taking responsibility for yourself and your life. How do you do that? By saying yes to God first—then to yourself. Every time you say yes, you open yourself up to your God-given potential and to the greatest of possibilities. If you’re used to saying no, you may find this difficult. If that is true in your case, then at least be willing to say ‘maybe.’ One day a father whose child was chronically ill asked Jesus to heal him. ‘Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!’’’ (Mark 9:23-24 NKJV). If you’re a self-doubter, pray that same prayer. God will answer it. *WHEN RESERVED GOD'S BLESSINGS ARE DEFERRED*
*TEXT:* PSALM 89:25-27.
25 I will set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers.
26 He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.
27 Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.
*Timeless Truth:*_"Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build an house unto my name... Behold, a son shall be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest...He shall build an house for my name"_(1 Chronicles 22:8-10).
*INTRODUCTION*
God has prepared and reserved blessings, privileges and divine purposes for everyone of His children. Yet, sometimes, what God has ordained does not manifest at the expected time. Such delay does not mean denial. David had prepared to build the temple and had made all things ready for the construction. However, God did not permit him, but transferred the project to his son to do so because he had shed much blood (1 Chronicles 22:8-10). Elijah was ordained and commanded to anoint both Elisha and Jehu as a matter of privilege. *"And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room"* (1 King 19:16). Elijah could only anoint his successor Elisha while the responsibility of anointing Jehu was shifted to Elisha by divine rearrangement (2 Kings 9:1-13). When someone has favour with God, rather than the person losing what God promised him, God in his sovereignty may decide to transfer the fulfilment of the blessing to someone dear to the person's heart, especially the son.
b. David was chosen and anointed by God, but the full expression of his kingship was preceded by seasons of waiting, rejection and hardship. The text reminds us that God’s promises are certain, but their manifestation may occur according to His sovereign timetable. When reserved blessings are deferred, faith must remain alive, character must be developed and dependence upon God must become stronger. Furthermore, saints must be extra careful so that they will fulfil God's purposes for their lives and ministry.
*1. Divine Reach*
God promised to extend David's influence from the sea to the rivers. This speaks of divine enlargement and influence. He promised David an expansion and prosperity. *"I will set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers"*. The full fulfilment was transferred to his son Solomon. David could not enjoy this fully in his lifetime. 1 Kings 4:24 states that Solomon had dominion over all regions west of the Euphrates River and enjoyed *"peace on all sides round about him"*. 1 Kings 4:25 notes that Judah and Israel lived safely, with everyone dwelling under their own vine and fig tree throughout his lifetime.
This era of rest was built upon the groundwork laid by his father, King David, who subdued surrounding conflicts, but he himself did not fully experience and enjoy them. From the desert where he was confined to take care of the sheep, he came to national prominence. He did not really have any rest as Saul was chasing him from one wilderness to another. His immorality and the consequent family problems created a dark spot in his life and made part of his life unenviable. God's promise of peace, prosperity and expansion which he could have enjoyed was transferred to his son.
b. God can reserve great territories, opportunities, achievements and spheres of influence for His people. However, the promise may preceed the possession by a considerable period. The people to whom He promised might not even enjoy the blessings except the generations that followed if they were careless with those blessings. David was anointed king long before he actually, occupied the throne. Furthermore, a deferred blessing should therefore, not make us conclude that God has forgotten us. God's delay may be preparing us for the dimension of blessing He has already reserved for us. We must continue walking faithfully, while waiting for divine enlargement.
*Question*
What really made David not enjoy the promised blessing that God had to transfer the full manifestation to his son?
*2. Declaration of Relationship*
a. *"He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation"*. The greatest inheritance and blessings anyone can receive from Christ is the blessings of an endowed relationship. Any worshipper, no matter how zealous, who lacks the assurance of a personal relationship with God is in a pitiable and not privileged state.
The greatest blessing is not merely what God gives, but who God is to us. David would recognize God as his Father, his God and the rock of his salvation. When blessings are deferred, God may be drawing us into deeper fellowship with Him.
Waiting seasons can expose whether we desire God Himself or merely God's gifts. A believer who knows God as Father can remain confident even when the promised blessing appears delayed. The relationship sustains the faith until the manifestation arrives.
b. The only route to have God as a Father is simply by receiving Christ as Lord and Saviour. *"As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God"*. The privilege of divine sonship is the greatest privilege any mortal can receive from God in this life. All other lasting and enduring divine blessings flow from this relationship.
*Question*
Do you have the assurance of the Holy Spirit that you are a child of God? If the blessing I am expecting is delayed, will I still confidently call God my Father, my God, and my Rock?
*3. Designated Rise*
a. *"Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth"*

Fear is a natural response to danger. It brings torment to the body. This is one of the weapons used by our archenemy (Satan). Fear can be triggered by past experiences, failures, death, insecurity, etc. It is *'False Experiences Appearing Real'.*
However, sin is the greatest tool that provokes fear. Abraham, in our Bible passage, told a lie because of fear. God was not happy with his action. His fear brought punishment upon the women in Abimelech's house.
God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). You have power in the name of Jesus, power in the blood of Jesus, and power in the word of God to conquer in all situations.
*To possess this confidence, you need Jesus if you are still telling lies, stealing, abusing, and doing all manner of evil. Come to Jesus, and He will save you from sin, fear and Satan.*

2. Morning devotion for today.
MD.i. Morning Prayer
Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, [and] to keep himself unspotted from the world. ⏤ James 1:27
True prayer is a way of life, not just for use in cases of emergency. ⏤ Billy Graham
Father, it is not a holy world into which we must now go forth. It is full of sin. We must meet many temptations. Then it is not an easy life into which we have to go. It has its tasks, its duties, its responsibilities, and its conflicts. We shall have our burdens to carry and our duties to do.
Yet we would not refuse to go forth into the world. It is Your voice that calls us forth—and wherever Your voice calls us, we would go without hesitation. We have no strength or wisdom of our own to make us equal to all the work and struggle of the day—but we know that when You send us forth, You will give us all the strength and wisdom we shall need. You have promised that as our days—so shall our strength be.
Fill us with Your grace, that we may be able to move through this evil world without faltering in our faithfulness. We are not of the world, but belong to Heaven, and are citizens of the kingdom of Jesus. Help us to live out here on earth, our true life, the life of Jesus, the life of Heaven. May we be enabled to keep ourselves unspotted from the world. May we live so purely, so earnestly, with such abundant life, that our influence shall be a real force for Jesus.
We ask for grace to make our common weekday work holy and beautiful, with the beauty of Christlikeness. May we be as Jesus to everyone we meet. In our social life, our business, our responsibilities at home, in all our friendships, in our leisure—may we show the sweetness of the love of Jesus. May You keep us, each and all, in all our goings and comings. Bless us—and use us to bless the world. Bring us together in the evening. We ask all these favors for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
