BEWARE OF DOGS 1
A WORD FROM THE WORD:
"Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the mutilation!" Philippians 3:2 NKJV.
From the context of our foundational Scripture, Paul the apostle, by the Holy Spirit's inspiration warns the believers in Philippi, and to us by extension, to 'beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of mutilation.' We're trusting God to look deeper into these warnings in today's devotional and subsequently as the LORD enables us by His grace.
It's the truth that a warning sign can only effectively serve its purpose if the one to who it is addressed can read and understands what it says. Paul, the apostle, warns the believers in Philippi to be on the lookout for several types of danger that may be encountered as they travel through life; and it would be wise for us to adhere to his wise counsel by the Holy Spirit's help. Once we understand what Paul’s warning point to, it will be much easier to recognise the threats that seek to entangle us.
In the first century Palestine, the word dog was reserved for those who antagonised others and represented a constant threat to them. The ultra conservative Jews often used it to describe the Christians, but here, Paul, the apostle is probably referring to the group of men that followed him from place to place preaching against the message of Christ.
It is important that you remember that there are people out there whose main goal in life is to attack Christianity. Once you understand their characteristics and motives, it will be much easier for you to recognise their idle threats, dismiss them, and move on in your faith. Nevertheless, always be mindful of the truthful fact that if you’re doing the will of the LORD, they will always be following you, the 'dogs,' polemics and the skeptics alike.
PRAYER BULLETS:
LORD Jesus, thank You for the illumination from Your Word. Help me to clearly discern the characteristics and motives of the dogs and be mindful of their antics.
FURTHER READING:
Matthew 7:6; Isaiah 56:10-11; 2 Peter 2:22; Revelation 22:15.
