• JESUS FORGAVE, SO CAN WE

One of the greatest miracles is not healing the sick,
    raising the dead,
    or calming the storm.

    It is forgiveness.

Forgiveness has the power to heal a wounded heart,
    restore broken relationships,
and bring peace where there was pain.

    Jesus could have chosen anger.

    Instead, He chose mercy.

    He could have chosen judgment.

    Instead, He chose grace.

And through His example, He showed us that forgiveness is not for the benefit of the offender alone—it is a gift to our own hearts.

When you forgive, you release the burden you've been carrying.
When you forgive, you make room for God's peace.
When you forgive, you become more like Christ.

The hardest chains to break are often the chains of resentment.

But God's love is stronger than every hurt.

Today, don't let yesterday's pain steal today's joy.

    Choose forgiveness.
    Choose peace.
    Choose love.

Because every time we forgive, we reflect the heart of Jesus.

"Forgive as the Lord forgave you." — Colossians 3:13

You may not be able to change what happened.

But with God's help, you can choose how it shapes your future.

  • THE ROOT OF BITTERNESS

Bitterness is not just an emotion — it is a spiritual condition. It begins as a wound but, if not treated properly, it grows roots.

A root is hidden beneath the surface. You may not see it immediately, but it spreads silently and affects everything connected to it.

    Hebrews 12:15 –
"Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled."

The Bible warns us that bitterness does three dangerous things:

It makes us fall short of grace.

    It troubles us internally.

It defiles many people around us.

Bitterness never stays private — it contaminates relationships, ministries, families, and destinies.

    1. What Is the Root of Bitterness?

The phrase “root of bitterness” refers to deep-seated resentment, unforgiveness, anger, or offense that has taken hold in the heart.

    It may come from:

    Betrayal

    Rejection

    Injustice

    Unmet expectations

    Harsh words

    Disappointment from trusted people

Bitterness is unresolved pain mixed with prolonged anger.

    In Ephesians 4:31, Scripture commands:
"Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger… be put away from you."

Notice — bitterness is listed alongside wrath and malice. It is spiritually dangerous.

    2. How Bitterness Begins

    Bitterness usually starts with offense.

    Jesus warned in Matthew 24:10:
"And then shall many be offended…"

Offense is the seed. Bitterness is the root.

If offense is not dealt with quickly, it grows underground in the heart. The longer it stays, the deeper it grows.

The Bible gives an example in Genesis 4:3–8, the story of Cain and Abel.

Cain became angry when his offering was rejected. Instead of correcting himself, he allowed resentment to grow — and it resulted in murder.

Uncontrolled bitterness can escalate into destructive actions.

    3. The Dangers of Bitterness

    (A) It Blocks God’s Grace

Hebrews 12:15 says bitterness causes us to fail of the grace of God.

When bitterness fills the heart, grace cannot flow freely. You cannot receive mercy while refusing to give mercy.

    (B) It Troubles You

    Bitterness affects:

    Your peace

    Your prayer life

    Your health

    Your joy

In Job 21:25, the Bible speaks of one who dies in bitterness of soul.

    Bitterness destroys from the inside.

    (C) It Defiles Many

    Bitterness spreads through:

    Gossip

    Negative speech

    Divisive attitudes

One bitter person can poison a whole group.

In 1 Corinthians 5:6, Scripture says,
"A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump."

    4. Biblical Example of Bitterness

Consider the elder brother in Luke 15:25–30 (The Prodigal Son story).

When his younger brother returned, instead of rejoicing, he became angry and resentful. His bitterness kept him outside the celebration.

Bitterness will keep you outside what God is doing.

    5. How to Uproot Bitterness

    (1) Acknowledge It
Do not deny your hurt. Bring it before God honestly.

    (2) Forgive
In Colossians 3:13, we are commanded to forgive as Christ forgave us.

Forgiveness is not saying what happened was right. It is choosing freedom over bondage.

    (3) Release It in Prayer
Pray for those who hurt you.

    Jesus taught in Matthew 5:44:
"Love your enemies, bless them that curse you…"

    Prayer weakens bitterness.

    (4) Replace It With Love
Bitterness cannot survive in a heart filled with love.

In 1 Corinthians 13:5 we read that love keeps no record of wrongs.

    6. The Blessing of a Clean Heart
    When bitterness is removed:

    Peace returns

    Joy is restored

    Relationships heal

    Grace flows again

    Psalm 51:10 –
"Create in me a clean heart, O God…"

A clean heart is more valuable than winning an argument.

    Conclusion

The root of bitterness may start small, but if allowed to grow, it can destroy destinies.

Today, examine your heart. Is there anyone you have not forgiven? Your wife, friend, brother, sister, or your children. Is there an offense you are still holding?

Do not allow hidden roots to rob you of grace.

Uproot bitterness before it uproots you.

    Prayer Points

Lord, expose every hidden root of bitterness in my heart.

Father, give me the grace to forgive completely.

Heal every wound that has turned into resentment.

    Restore my joy and peace.

  • Unforgiveness!

Unforgiveness is a silent destroyer that eats deep into the soul of man.

It is the poison we drink hoping our enemy will die.

Many Christians pray, fast, and worship, yet their prayers are hindered because of unforgiveness lodged in their hearts.

God commands us to forgive, not because the offender deserves it, but because we ourselves were forgiven through Christ.

    Text: Matthew 6:14-15

“For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

    - The Meaning of Unforgiveness

Unforgiveness is the deliberate refusal to release someone from the debt of an offense.

It is holding onto pain, resentment, or bitterness against another person.

It is like keeping someone in prison — yet the person in chains is you.

    Ephesians 4:31-32

“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”

    - The Consequences of Unforgiveness

Unforgiveness destroys relationships, blocks prayers, and hinders spiritual growth.

It opens the door for the devil to operate in one’s life.

    Mark 11:25-26

“And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.”

    Consequences include:

    * Spiritual stagnation – you cannot grow while bitter.

    * Physical sickness – bitterness breeds stress, hypertension, and emotional pain.

    * Broken fellowship with God – the Holy Spirit cannot dwell in a heart full of hatred.

    - The Example of Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is the perfect model of forgiveness. On the Cross, in the midst of His pain, He said,
    Luke 23:34

“Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.”

Even in His suffering, Jesus chose mercy over revenge. If we claim to follow Him, we must also forgive as He forgave us.

    - The Blessings of Forgiveness
When you forgive, you set yourself free. Forgiveness brings peace, restoration, and healing to your heart.

    Colossians 3:13

“Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”

    Blessings include:

    * Answered prayers

    * Peace of mind

    * Spiritual renewal

    * Freedom from emotional bondage

    - How to Walk in Forgiveness
Acknowledge the hurt – don’t deny your pain; take it to God.

    - Decide to forgive – forgiveness is a decision, not a feeling.

    - Pray for your offenders – it heals your heart (Matthew 5:44).

    - Let go daily – don’t rehearse the offense; release it to God.

Remember God’s forgiveness – you were forgiven much; forgive others freely.

Unforgiveness is too heavy a burden to carry.

No one can run the Christian race with bitterness in their heart.

Forgiveness does not make you weak; it makes you free.

God’s love in you must be greater than the pain caused by others.

    Romans 12:19-21

“Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink… Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”

    Pray This Prayer:

    - Lord, give me a forgiving heart like Yours.

    - Every bitterness in my heart — melt away by the power of the Holy Spirit.

    - Father, help me to release those who have hurt me.

    - Lord, heal my heart from every past wound.

    - Restore peace and joy into my soul.

Theme: Forgive and You Will Be Forgiven
    Series: Spiritual Foundations

    Scripture:

“Forgive others, and you will be forgiven.”
    — Luke 6:37 (ERV)

Devotional Message: Forgive and You Will Be Forgiven
    Forgiveness isn’t a suggestion — it’s a spiritual principle.
When you release others, you make room for God’s grace to flow freely in your life.

Unforgiveness blocks peace. It feeds bitterness. It holds your heart hostage.
But when you forgive, you unlock healing — not just for others, but for yourself.

Jesus didn’t say, “If they say sorry, then forgive.”
He said, “Forgive… and you will be forgiven.”
Because forgiveness is more about your freedom than their apology.

    Choosing mercy is choosing maturity.
    Choosing grace is choosing growth.

“Being able to forgive means you're able to move forward.”

If you’ve been stuck emotionally or spiritually, maybe the first step forward… is to let go.

    Today’s Reminder:
    Forgiveness isn’t weakness — it’s spiritual strength.
It reflects the heart of God and opens the door to your next season.

    Prayer Point:
Lord, I release every offense, known or hidden.
Help me forgive like You forgive — fully, freely, and without delay.
Heal the wounds I’ve carried and soften the places in my heart I’ve closed.
Let mercy flow through me, so I can keep walking in Your peace and favor.

    ๐Ÿ—ฃ Declaration of Faith:
    I choose to forgive.
I am not held back by pain, pride, or people.
I release others, and I receive freedom.
God’s mercy covers me — because I walk in mercy too.
