  • Daily Devotion — June 20 | Acts 2:38 (NKJV)

A Changed Heart and a New Beginning

Acts 2:38 follows the powerful conviction that came upon the crowd after Peter's sermon on the Day of Pentecost. Having heard the truth about Jesus Christ, the people were deeply moved and asked, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" Peter's response was clear and direct. They were to repent, turn to Christ, and publicly identify with Him through baptism.

Repentance is more than feeling sorry for sin. It involves a change of heart that leads to a change of direction. The people were called to turn away from their old ways and place their faith in Jesus Christ. God was inviting them into a restored relationship with Himself through the forgiveness made possible by Christ's death and resurrection.

Peter's message also emphasized the wonderful promise of God's grace. Those who responded in faith would experience the remission of sins and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. What a remarkable truth! God does not merely forgive sin; He also gives His presence to dwell within believers, empowering them to live a new life.

This verse reminds us that the gospel always calls for a response. God lovingly invites people to turn to Him, receive His forgiveness, and walk in obedience. For believers, repentance is not a one-time event but an ongoing attitude of humility and surrender. As we continually turn our hearts toward God, we experience the joy of His cleansing, guidance, and fellowship.

No matter what mistakes lie in our past, God's grace is greater. Through Jesus Christ, forgiveness is available, new life is possible, and the Holy Spirit empowers us to walk faithfully with Him.

    Reflection Questions

    1. Are there areas of my life where I need to repent and turn back to God?

    2. How has God's forgiveness changed the direction of my life?

    3. Am I living daily in dependence upon the Holy Spirit's guidance and power?

    Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the forgiveness available through Jesus Christ. Search my heart and reveal anything that keeps me from walking closely with You. Help me to live with a repentant and obedient spirit. Thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit who strengthens and guides me each day. In Jesus name Amen.

    Practical Application

โ— Spend time in prayer asking God to reveal any areas that need repentance.

โ— Thank God specifically for the forgiveness and grace He has given you through Christ.

โ— Rely on the Holy Spirit throughout the day by seeking His guidance in your decisions and actions.

    Takeaway Thought

God's invitation to repentance leads to forgiveness, renewal, and a life empowered by His Spirit.

  • Saint of the Day โ€” 20 June
    Saint Silverius
The Pope Who Would Not Be Bought

    An empress offered him
    a deal.

    Sign a single letter.
    Recognize the man she wanted
in the seat of a bishop.

    Betray, just slightly,
what he knew to be true.

    And his position,
    his safety,
    his entire future
    would be secure.

    Silverius said no.

He was the son of Pope Hormisdas,
    born into the Church
    before his father
    had even entered ordained life.

    By the time Pope Agapetus
    died in Constantinople
    in April of 536,

    Silverius was a subdeacon โ€”
    not even a priest yet.

But Rome needed a pope quickly.
    The Ostrogothic king Theodahad
    wanted his own man
    in the position.

    Silverius was ordained
    in June of 536.

    He had barely settled
    into the role

    when the empress Theodora,
    ruling alongside her husband
    Justinian in Constantinople,

    made her demand.

    She wanted Silverius
    to restore a deposed,
    heretical bishop
    named Anthimus โ€”

    a man his predecessor
    had specifically condemned
    for teaching error
    about the nature of Christ.

    Theodora's offer was simple.

    Comply,
    and you keep your position.

    Refuse,
    and you will be removed.

    Silverius answered her
    without hesitation.

    He would not
    betray the faith
    to keep his seat.

    So Theodora turned
    to Vigilius โ€”

    a Roman deacon
    ambitious enough
    to take the bait.

    She promised him
    gold and the papacy itself
if he would help remove Silverius
    and agree to her demands
    in his place.

    Vigilius accepted.

    Rome at this time
    was also caught
in the middle of a war โ€”

    the Byzantine general Belisarius
    held the city under siege
    from the Ostrogoths.

    In the chaos,
    false documents were produced,
    accusing Silverius
    of corresponding
    with the enemy.

    He was stripped
    of his papal robes,
    forced into a monk's habit,

    and exiled
    to the desolate island
    of Palmaria
    in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

    There, in captivity,
    deprived of food,
    worn down by isolation
    and harsh treatment,

    Silverius died.

    He never recanted.

    He never signed
    the letter
    that would have
    saved his life.

    He was buried
    on that same island
    where he had been
    left to die โ€”

    and the faithful who later
    visited his grave
    began invoking him
    as a saint.

    By the eleventh century,
    the Church had recognized
    what was always true:

a pope who chose exile and death
    over betraying the faith
    entrusted to him.

"No one can serve two masters."
    โ€” Matthew 6:24

    "Be faithful unto death,
    and I will give you
    the crown of life."
    โ€” Revelation 2:10

    Prayer

    Saint Silverius,
    you were offered safety
    in exchange for compromise,

    and you chose
    the harder road.

    Pray for us โ€”

    that when we are asked
    to trade truth for comfort,
    faith for convenience,

    we might find
    your same courage.

    Amen.

    Truth for Today

    A throne built on betrayal
    is worth less
than an island built on truth.

    Reflection

    Is there a "letter"
you've been asked to sign โ€”

    a small compromise
    that would buy you
    comfort or approval?

Comment "St. Silverius, pray for us"
    or "Amen"
