THE MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (Part 12)

ANCHOR SCRIPTURE: Jude 1:20 (NKJV)
“But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.”

Additional Scripture Reading: Acts 2:1–4; 1 Corinthians 14:2–4, 14–15; Ephesians 6:18; Romans 8:26–27

We were scheduled to conclude our series on the Ministry of the Holy Spirit today, but by the grace of God, we shall look at two more vital dimensions—this week and next Sunday.

Another significant manifestation of the Holy Spirit's coming upon the disciples was the ability to speak in other tongues. On the Day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon them, they began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Speaking in tongues is not given to believers for showing off, competition, or spiritual superiority. It is a spiritual gift and a means through which the believer can commune with God and be spiritually strengthened.

The Apostle Paul teaches that the one who speaks in a tongue speaks to God and that such prayer edifies the individual. Therefore, praying in the Spirit has an important place in the believer's personal spiritual life.

Jude likewise exhorts believers to build themselves up on their most holy faith by praying in the Holy Spirit. This reveals that praying in the Spirit is one of the ways through which we strengthen and build our spiritual lives.

There are times when we may not know what to pray for as we ought, but as we yield to the Holy Spirit, He helps us in our weakness and enables us to pray beyond the limitations of our natural understanding.

Child of God, do not treat spiritual things as instruments of display. The purpose of every spiritual manifestation is to glorify God and edify His people. If God has given you the grace to pray in the Spirit, cultivate it with humility, reverence, and consistency.

Let your prayer life not be governed by what people think about you, but by your desire to grow deeper in fellowship with God and to be strengthened in your walk with Him.

Strength Is Found in Faithfulness

Scripture

Judges 16:28 (NKJV)

Then Samson called to the LORD, saying, O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray! Strengthen me, I pray, just this once, O God, that I may with one blow take vengeance on the Philistines for my two eyes.

God Can Restore the Repentant

Judges 16 records one of the most tragic chapters in Samson's life. God had uniquely called him from birth to be a Nazirite and a deliverer of Israel. The Lord had given him extraordinary strength through the power of the Holy Spirit, yet Samson repeatedly compromised with temptation instead of walking in obedience.

His relationship with Delilah exposed the weakness that had been growing in his heart. Rather than guarding the calling God had entrusted to him, Samson toyed with sin until it eventually overcame him. After revealing the secret connected to his Nazirite vow, his hair was cut, the Lord's empowering presence departed from him, and the Philistines captured him. They blinded him, bound him, and forced him into humiliating labor.

One of the saddest statements in Scripture is that Samson did not realize that the LORD had departed from him. Sin had gradually dulled his spiritual awareness until he no longer recognized what he had lost.

Yet God's grace had not reached its end.

While Samson was imprisoned, his hair began to grow again. More importantly, his heart turned back to God. At the end of his life, Samson finally humbled himself and prayed. He no longer trusted in his own strength but cried out for God's strength. His final victory came not because of his ability but because of God's mercy.

God answered Samson's prayer. Though Samson suffered the consequences of his disobedience, God restored him for one final act that accomplished more than many of his earlier victories.

This chapter reminds believers that compromise always carries consequences, but repentance opens the door to God's mercy. Our failures do not have to be the end of our story when we return to the Lord with sincere humility. God delights in restoring those who genuinely repent and place their trust in Him.

Reflection Questions

1. Is there any area of compromise that I need to confess before it grows into greater bondage?

2. Am I relying on my own strength instead of God's power?

3. Have I allowed failure to keep me from returning to the Lord, or am I trusting in His restoring grace?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your mercy and Your willingness to restore those who turn back to You. Guard my heart from compromise and help me to walk faithfully in the calling You have given me. When I fail, lead me quickly to repentance and remind me that Your grace is greater than my weakness. Strengthen me by Your Spirit so that I may live for Your glory each day. In Jesus' name, Amen..

William Gurnall, on the necessity of imparting the knowledge of God and religion to our children:

“Every private family is as a little nursery to the church. If the nursery be not carefully planted, the orchard will soon decay. O could you be willing, Christians, that your children, when you are laid in the dust, should be turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine, and prove a generation that do not know God? Atheism needs not be planted; you do enough to make your children such, if you do not endeavour to plant religion in their minds. The very neglect of the gardener to sow and dress his garden, gives advantage enough to the weeds to come up. This is the difference between religion and atheism, Religion doth not grow without planting, but will die even where it is planted, without watering; atheism, irreligion, and profaneness are weeds [that] will grow without setting, but they will not die without plucking up. All care and means are little enough to stub them up. “Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart.”
Devotional message:

Yesterday, we saw that God desires us to make Him our ultimate source and to rely completely upon Him. Today, we look at one of the clearest ways we demonstrate our dependence upon God: prayer.

Prayer is more than presenting our requests before God. Prayer is an acknowledgment of our dependence upon Him. When we pray, we are declaring that we cannot sustain ourselves by our own strength and that we need God's wisdom, grace, direction, protection, provision, and sustaining power.

Therefore, a prayerless life can gradually become an expression of self-dependence. When a person consistently lives without seeking God, it can communicate, whether consciously or unconsciously, “I can manage my life without You.”

Daniel is a powerful example. Despite occupying a high position in government and serving under different regimes, he never allowed his position to become his source of security. Scripture records that he prayed three times a day, just as he had done previously (Daniel 6:10).

His government position could not sustain him. His wisdom could not protect him from every danger. His influence could not guarantee his future.He needed God.And because Daniel maintained his dependence upon God, the Lord sustained him even through different administrations and dangerous circumstances.

And our greatest example is Jesus Christ Himself.Before beginning His public ministry, Jesus spent time in prayer. Scripture records that He withdrew to solitary places to pray (Luke 5:16), and on another occasion He went to the mountain and continued all night in prayer (Luke 6:12).

Prayer keeps us connected to the Source.When we pray, God can correct our direction before we make costly decisions. He can strengthen us when we are weak, guide us when we are confused, sustain us when we are weary, and remind us that we are not walking this journey alone.

Do not wait until the battle becomes unbearable before you pray.Pray before the battle. Pray during the battle. Pray after the victory.Make prayer your lifestyle, not merely your emergency tool.The more we recognize our dependence upon God, the more naturally we will seek Him.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father,As Daniel sought You consistently, as the disciples devoted themselves to prayer, and as Jesus continually withdrew to fellowship with the Father, give us grace to seek you continually.In Jesus' name, Amen.

*We Mustn't Have Misplaced Priorities*

The Lord Jesus encourage all His followers to trust in God wholeheartedly, and not follow the pattern of the heathens with misplaced priorities. They seek wrong things.
He further said what should be most important priority for His followers:

*Matthew 6:33 "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."*

*Meaning of the Verse The Kingdom of God:*
Putting God's rule, will, and purposes at the center of our daily life.

*His Righteousness:* Living by God's standards of goodness and moral truth instead of our own.

*All These Things:* Daily needs like food, water, and clothing that Jesus said people worry about too much.

*How to Apply It*

*Let go of worry:*
Trusting that God knows what we need and will help us.

*Making God our priority:*
Put prayer, kindness, and obedience before money or stress.

*Focusing on daily:*
We must not permit fear of tomorrow ruin our peace right now

*Prayer To Seek God First*
Dear Father in heaven, we thank You for loving us and pursuing a relationship with us. You are everything to us, and we want to seek You first each day. Please be part of every decision, every thought, every word, and every action we have. Our life is Yours, we live and move through You. You are our source of life, and without You, we are nothing. Let Your presence lead us always: Your pillar of clouds in the day time and Your pillars of fire in the night time.
Rather than worrying about how to get what we need, we will seek You and watch You meet our needs.
You are our sufficiency, and in You is our hiding place. Thank You El-Shaddai, the double breasted One.

GOD'S WORD FOR THE DAY

“Giving God Our Best”

2 Kings 12:11

“Then they gave the money, which was weighed out, into the hands of those who did the work, who had the oversight of the house of the Lord.”

This is the Word of God. 2 Kings 12 describes how King Joash took action to repair the temple of the Lord. The work required careful stewardship of the resources that had been entrusted to them. The people gave, the workers served, and the temple was restored.

This reminds us that what we give to God should be handled with faithfulness and responsibility. Our time, abilities, possessions, and resources are all gifts from Him, and we are called to use them for His glory.

Serving God is not merely about giving something; it is about giving our best with an honest and willing heart. Whether our contribution seems great or small, God values faithfulness.

May God help us to be faithful stewards of everything He has entrusted to us and to give Him our best in every area of our lives. Amen.

Confused Priorities Can Seriously Hinder Our Walk With Christ

Walking with Christ is a journey of intentional devotion, yet many believers find their spiritual progress stalled. The culprit is rarely overt rebellion; rather, it is the subtle, creeping danger of confused priorities. When worldly ambitions, anxieties, and fleeting pleasures crowd out the Lord, our spiritual vitality withers.
Jesus addressed this peril directly in the Parable of the Sower. In Luke 8:14, He describes the seed that falls among thorns: "The seeds that fell among thorns stand for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature." Notice that these individuals heard the Word, but their spiritual growth was choked out. Misplaced priorities—chasing wealth, stressing over daily survival, or living for entertainment—act like spiritual weeds. They consume our emotional and mental energy, leaving no room for a vibrant relationship with Christ.
When our focus is divided, our spiritual sight becomes completely blurred. Jesus warns in Matthew 6:24: "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." Financial security or worldly success easily masquerades as a master, dictating our time, decisions, and passions. When we attempt to split our allegiance between God and the world, spiritual paralysis sets in. We become lukewarm, drifting away from the transforming power of the Holy Spirit.
Moreover, accommodating sin or holding onto competing loyalties fractures our intimacy with God. As James 4:4 sharply reminds us, "You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God." Friendship with the world here denotes adopting its value system. When we prioritize worldly acceptance over divine obedience, we actively hinder our communion with Christ.

To experience the abundant life Jesus promised, we must ruthlessly evaluate our schedules and hearts, cutting away the clutter. Realigning our lives with Christ restores our purpose, clearing the thorns so we can walk closely and powerfully with our Savior.

Lord, forgive me for the times I have allowed worldly worries, ambitions, and distractions to choke out my devotion to You. Open my eyes to see where my priorities have drifted away from Your kingdom. Cleanse my heart from a divided allegiance, and grant me the grace to reject the pull of this world. Sunday August 23, 2026 Confused Priorities Can Seriously Hinder Our Walk With Christ Walking with Christ is a journey of intentional devotion, yet many believers find their spiritual progress stalled. The culprit is rarely overt rebellion; rather, it is the subtle, creeping danger of confused priorities. When worldly ambitions, anxieties, and fleeting pleasures crowd out the Lord, our spiritual vitality withers. Jesus addressed this peril directly in the Parable of the Sower. In Luke 8:14, He describes the seed that falls among thorns: "The seeds that fell among thorns stand for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature." Notice that these individuals heard the Word, but their spiritual growth was choked out. Misplaced priorities—chasing wealth, stressing over daily survival, or living for entertainment—act like spiritual weeds. They consume our emotional and mental energy, leaving no room for a vibrant relationship with Christ. When our focus is divided, our spiritual sight becomes completely blurred. Jesus warns in Matthew 6:24: "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." Financial security or worldly success easily masquerades as a master, dictating our time, decisions, and passions. When we attempt to split our allegiance between God and the world, spiritual paralysis sets in. We become lukewarm, drifting away from the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. Moreover, accommodating sin or holding onto competing loyalties fractures our intimacy with God. As James 4:4 sharply reminds us, "You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God." Friendship with the world here denotes adopting its value system. When we prioritize worldly acceptance over divine obedience, we actively hinder our communion with Christ. Ultimately, confused priorities rob us of our spiritual fruitfulness and joy. Meditation:
God does not only forgive your past; He restores what life has wounded.
There are places in your heart that people cannot reach, but the Father can heal them.
What feels broken, wasted, or beyond repair is not beyond His ability to restore.
Restoration may not look like getting the old life back—it may mean receiving something deeper and stronger in Christ.
The Father is not finished with you because you have been through broken seasons.
What you thought was the end may become the place where God begins something new.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, restore every broken place in my life and renew my heart. Help me trust Your restoring work. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
