IN THE BEGINNING — GOD'S PERFECT DESIGN FOR MAN & WOMAN

"In the beginning God created them male and female."
God's design was established at Creation and reveals His wisdom, love, and perfect order.

    THE ORDER OF CREATION
From the very beginning, God created everything with purpose and in perfect sequence.
    The order of Creation:
    Earth, water, and air
    Vegetation and light
    Birds and fish
    Land animals
    Man
    Woman—the crowning act of Creation
As the final act of Creation, woman beautifully reflects God's wisdom, creativity, and care.
    CREATED IN A UNIQUE WAY
    Genesis 2:21–23
God created the first man and woman differently.
    Man
Formed from the dust of the ground.
    Woman
    Created from the man's side.
    Bone of his bones.
    Flesh of his flesh.
Designed for loving companionship and unity.
    Adam joyfully declared:
"This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man."

    GOD ESTABLISHED DISTINCT ROLES
Although equal in worth before God, men and women were given different responsibilities.
    God designed harmony within:
    The Home
    The Church
    Society
    Genesis 3:16
"...thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee."
The word "rule" means to lead, govern, or exercise responsibility.

    THIS WAS GOD'S WORD
This instruction did not originate from:
    Moses
    David
    Peter
    John
    Paul
It was spoken directly by God Himself.

    UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE
Some claim these teachings merely reflect ancient culture.
However, Scripture distinguishes between God's original design and practices He temporarily permitted because of human sinfulness.
    Jesus explained:
"...because of the hardness of your heart..." (Mark 10:5)
Practices like slavery and polygamy were tolerated in certain circumstances—but they were never God's original ideal.

    GOD'S DESIGN EXISTED BEFORE SIN
Before sin ever entered the world:
    Genesis 2:18
God created Eve to be Adam's "help meet"—a suitable companion and partner.
1 Corinthians 11:7–9 also points back to this Creation order.

    A PARTNERSHIP THAT REFLECTS CHRIST
God's design is not about superiority or inferiority.
    It is about:
    Love
    Unity
    Mutual respect
    Order
    Service
    Faithfulness
    Husbands are called to:
    Love sacrificially
    Lead spiritually
    Serve faithfully
    Protect and nurture their families
    Wives are called to:
    Support their husbands
    Build the home
    l Encourage their families
    Glorify God through faithful partnership
Together they reveal God's beautiful plan for marriage.

"Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh." — Genesis 2:24

    CONCLUSION.
When men and women embrace God's design with humility, love, and obedience, the home becomes stronger, the church is blessed, and God is glorified.

  • Good morning, brethren.
    1. Morning devotion for today.

    MD.i. MORNING TEA
    THE WORD FOR TODAY
    SATURDAY JULY 25, 2O26.
"DON'T LOOSE YOUR COMPASSIONATE EDGE (3)"

'…We have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feelings of our infirmities…’   Hebrews 4:15 KJV

DR JOSEPH Parker told his theology students, ‘Preach to the suffering and you will never lack a congregation. There is a broken heart in every pew.’ Don’t lose your compassionate edge because you can’t heal a broken heart unless you can first empathise with it. The Bible says, ‘We have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feelings of our infirmities.’ When you lose touch with people, you lose your touch when it comes to ministering to them. Jesus went looking for the leper, the loser, the lonely, the lost, and the lowest in society. And He was comfortable around them. Are you? Serving others is actually good for your health. A survey conducted at 44 major universities reveals that giving protects your overall health twice as much as an aspirin protects your heart against disease. Dr Stephen Post, who conducted the survey, says, ‘Giving is the most potent force on the planet and will protect your whole life.’ The benefits of compassion to your physical health are so strong that if compassion wasn’t free, pharmaceutical companies would herald the discovery of a stupendous new drug called ‘give back’ instead of ‘Prozac’.’ We give for different reasons: to get an income tax deduction; to make a good impression and have people think well of us; or because we’re put under pressure. You can give without loving, but you can’t love without giving. Your time, talent, and treasure are to be shared with others. When you refuse, you’re neither happy, holy, nor healthy.

*More and more people seem to forget Henry Ford's wise advice when asked on his 50th wedding anniversary for his rule for marital bliss and longevity. He replied: "Just the same as in the automobile business, stick to one model."*

*From our text, Christ's teaching about divorce and remarriage is explicit. Moses gave permission for divorce, not because it was so from the beginning but due to the people's hardness of heart. Jesus insisted that in the sight of God, marriage is a lifetime relationship that should never be severed by human action. God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16). His perfect will is the preservation of future generations and society through lasting marriages. God will give anyone great help in sustaining a marriage relationship or reconcilling estranged marriage partners. Christ's exception for 'fornication' in our text covers unfaithfulness before the actual marriage is contracted.*

*The experiences of couples who went through divorce are not encouraging. A study of divorced couples with preschool children shows that after a year of divorce, 60% of men and 73% of women feel they made a mistake and should have tried harder to make their marriage work. People have no idea how much anguish and stress is caused by divorce. This is a lesson to our godly fathers and mothers. They must ensure their children marry in the Lord. Friendship with ungodly families is like sowing the seeds of corruption in your own family. This unholy union of our sons and daughters with unbelieving spouses has introduced corruption in our families and churches.*

*Our role models are not the pop singers, film stars and fashion models who seem to change marriage partners like they change their robes. People may hold whatever views they want on divorce, but God, who is the Judge of the whole world has already spoken His mind in Scriptures. God's standard on marriage remains unchangeable even in this changeable world. Allow love and forgiveness to reign in your home.*

There was a very touching story in the media sometime ago, of very rich parents who had a child that suffered from a kidney sickness. One of the two kidneys could not work well again. The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs that filter harmful materials from the human blood in the form of urine.

The child needed a kidney transplant. That is, a medical procedure of replacing a defective kidney through surgery. The two parents had four kidneys, but none of them was willing to give one to their beloved child. Can you see how limited human love is?

Yet, Jesus gave His life, not just a kidney for us; He did it joyfully. We were sentenced to eternal death in hell because of our sins. God needed a substitute - one who is willing to die in our place.

Paul the Apostle, was overwhelmed by the depth of Christ's love. It was love that caused him to decide to live his remaining days on earth in thankfulness to his Saviour. Jesus offered Himself in our place. This is love indeed!

*He bore your pains and shame. He gave Himself for you. What can you give Him in return? You must be thankful for the love of Jesus. Make a vow, a promise to live the whole of your life to please Him. Choose to serve Him in truth and in righteousness till you die.*

    *DO NOT PLAY WITH FIRE*

    *TEXT:* MATTHEW 19:1-12.

    1 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan;
2 And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.
3 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?
8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
10 His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.
11 But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.
12 For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

*Timeless Truth:*_"Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned? So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent"_ (Proverbs 6:27-29).

    *INTRODUCTION*

Fire can be one of humanity's greatest blessings or one of its greatest dangers. When it is kept in its proper place, it provides warmth, light and strength. But when handled carelessly, it destroys lives, homes and destinies. In the same way, there are spiritual "fires" that God has warned His people not to toy with. Sin may appear attractive, temptation may seem harmless and compromise may look insignificant, but the consequences are often devastating. Scripture repeatedly warns that no one can handle fire carelessly and remains unharmed: *"Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?"* (Proverbs 6:27).

*1. Admiration: The Sanctity of Marriage*

     a. Marriage is an admirable thing in the life of a man or woman. Nobody, all things being equal, goes into a wedding with sadness, but with joy and celebration. However, whenever man attempts to handle marriage in his own way, the destructive effect cannot be estimated. Marriage is not a matter of "hire and fire" in which you can handle it carelessly and scatter it at the least provocation. Your attitude towards Marriage will determine your eternal destiny. This is the fearful truth. *"Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge"* (Hebrews 13:4). Marriage institution should be preserved in honour and purity. Anyone who gambles with these two virtues in a marriage relationship will end up being destroyed, eternally.
    b. *"Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?"*. The Pharisees were said to be tempting Jesus because they knew the answer in the Pentateuch. The main valid exception was when a woman that was betrothed to a man was found to have committed sexual immorality before the actual marriage like the case of Mary and Joseph. This, in the Law, was technically called "fornication".
c The answer of Jesus had several implications. *"Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female"*. Godly marriage is between male and female. Same sex marriage is against the will of God. Second, marriage is between two people. Except if you want to add to the Bible to suit your evil action, you cannot see polygamy in this passage just like Jesus, the Bridegroom is not having more than one bride, the Church and just like Adam was not created with another woman apart from Eve. The divine will is clear on this. *"For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh. Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder"*. Every Word of Jesus points to the original design of one man, one wife. Any other thing is an addition to the Word of God (Matthew 5:18,19). It is only those that have another god that will be satisfied and comfortable at rejecting the Word of God. Inability or unwillingness to obey Jesus Christ does not invalidate His words; it only shows that you need to run to Christ for grace and power to do His will.

    *Question*

Do you align with all the Words of Jesus on marriage?

*2. Adultery: The Sins of the Married*

    a. Polygamy and divorce were permitted in the Old Covenant, but never in the New Covenant. Jesus gave the reason. *"He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so"*. The teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ is a reset to the perfect will of God at creation. *"And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery"*. The fact that *"Except for fornication"* is known and peculiar to the Jewish Old Testament culture is clear as that clause is not in all the other parallel synoptic gospel like Mark 10:1-12, Luke 16:18. A man does not commit adultery by putting away his wife, but if he marries another person, then adultery has taken place. What if he does not marry after putting away? There is still danger for the divorcing man. Can he claim to be a practicing Christian, that has the grace of Christ to forgive without sincerely, having any bitterness that will lead to eternal damnation? Matthew 5:32 says that the man cannot escape if the "putting away" causes the woman to go and marry someone else or commit immorality. In that case *"he causes her to commit adultery"* though he might have committed adultery. It is also true for the other side too. What is the lot of someone who makes others sin? See Matthew 18:6. No heaven for such a person except there is repentance and restitution. The divorced woman is not free for marriage except if she was not a real wife originally. The real wife is the living first wife of the living man. *"Whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery"*. It is all about moral chastity. No married man is allowed by God to see the nakedness of more than one woman or wife as long as the first wife is alive. This puts polygamy out of the equation of divine will.
    b. Romans 7:2,3 reinforces this commandment. Romans 7:10-11 speaks on separation, without necessarily divorce, which was not fully addressed by Christ. What if they decide to separate without being divorced? It says that must not be among children of God. However, it is possible one of them is an unbeliever who does not take the Word of God binding and serious. Remarriage is ruled out, but reconciliation is the perfect will of God. If one of them is an unbeliever and is not ready to reconcile according to the will of God, but insist on separation? The believing partner is no more answerable to God as to whatever happens to the rebellious partner even if he or she falls into adultery. *"If the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace"* (1 Corinthians 7:15). This is not a license to remarry as this will contradict the Words of Christ. Rather it is a license to live separately without being held responsible for the fall or adultery of the unbeliever. So remarriage after separation is still forbidden, but the believer is not counted responsible to God for the irreconcilable attitude of the other partner.

    *Question*

Can a believer obey this Word of Christ without grace?

*3. Acceptability: The Separation from Mess*

    a. It should not be surprising that *"His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry"*. This raises two issues. First, there must be prayer and due diligence in choosing the right partner. The right scriptural foundation is germane to any godly heaven bound marriage. Second, the grace of Christ is needed and always available to do the will of God. The grace needed for marital bliss and resolve issues in marriage will also be needed in making heaven. It is a relational grace needed to endure all things, suffer all things, follow peace with all men, forgive our offenders and love others unconditionally.

    *Question*

Do you have this grace? It can be received by asking.

    *Prayer Points*

1.Father, we thank You for the institution of marriage and the available grace to do Your will .
2.Pray against getting into unscriptural marriage. .
3.Ask for the abundance of grace and fruit of the Spirit to live happily with your partner .
4.Pray for couples in the church that God will visit their marriages and make it happy and fulfilling. Pray for the unmarried that they will not fall into the snare of wrong partnyers.

*HYMN:* Gracious Spirit dwell with me

    2. Morning Prayer for today.

    MP.i. Morning Prayer

He hath showed thee, O man, what [is] good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? ⏤ Micah 6:8

The closer you live to God, the smaller everything else appears. ⏤ Corrie Ten Boom

O God, just as Enoch walked with You, we desire to walk with You today. The world is full of dangers, and we can't navigate it safely without Your protection. The paths are tangled, and we could never find our way alone. We need Your companionship to make this day a blessing. So we ask that we may walk with You. We will try to be faithful—not running ahead of You or falling behind—but staying with You all day. May You walk with us and help us to walk with You.

We thank You for the rest of the past night. You have kept us safe. We lay down and slept, and You sustained us. You are our protector. All our blessings come from You. Give us grateful hearts as we begin this new day. We want to please You in all things, not straying from Your commandments. Help us, for while our spirit is willing, our flesh is weak, and we can't be faithful without Your strength.

Bless everyone in our home this morning, and give each of us a personal blessing. As we go out to our different duties, it may be that we shall never all meet together again; may we, therefore, part in love so that if we never come together again in this world, there will be no regrets in our hearts because of unkindness at parting. Bless our morning meal and give us wisdom for all the duties, tasks, responsibilities, and challenges of the day. May our influence be for good, leaving a blessing on everyone we encounter. Make us strong for our work. Protect us from the dangers of the day, and keep us near Your heart, giving us the grace, mercy, and peace we need. For Jesus' sake. Amen.

Christ's exception for 'fornication' in our text covers unfaithfulness before the actual marriage is contracted.* *The experiences of couples who went through divorce are not encouraging. This unholy union of our sons and daughters with unbelieving spouses has introduced corruption in our families and churches.* *Our role models are not the pop singers, film stars and fashion models who seem to change marriage partners like they change their robes. People may hold whatever views they want on divorce, but God, who is the Judge of the whole world has already spoken His mind in Scriptures. God's standard on marriage remains unchangeable even in this changeable world. Allow love and forgiveness to reign in your home.* ✍🏽```THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:``` _*In the divine charter, there is no provision for divorce.*_ 📜📜```THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:``` *EXODUS 30-32*📜📜 God's Unchangeable Standard https://dailymanna.app// *RECOMMENDED GOSPEL HYMNS AND SONGS - GHS 46: A CHRISTIAN HOME; GHS 83: THY WORD HAVE I HID IN MY HEART; AND GHS 185: THE THING MY GOD DOTH HATE* *TXD [THEXDEVOTIONALS] on Twitter* *#DailyManna25thJuly2026* *#GCK* *#WorshipNuggets* *#BibleNuggets* *#LeadershipNuggets* *#RevivalNuggets* *#CrusadeNuggets* https://www.youtube.com/[THEXDEVOTIONALS] [24/07, 8:18 pm] Pastor Attah: ```DEEPER CHRISTIAN LIFE MINISTRY``` _*HIGHER EVERYD🅰️Y: (A DAILY DEVOTIONAL GUIDE FOR YOUTHS)*_ ✍🏽👩🏻‍💼🌻 🍇🙏🏽🛰🚀🔬📚 ```SATURDAY 25TH JULY, 2026``` *DIVINE PRESENCE* 🎚️📓📖🫵🏽🙋🏽‍♂️🙋🏽‍♀️✨🧎🏽🧎🏽‍♀️🙏🏽🙌🏽 📜📜```TEXT:PSALM 91:1-9```📜📜 📖``` MEMORY VERSE:``` _*"Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence" (PSALM 91:3).*_ *Using the acronym P.R.E.S.E.N.C.E., somebody said God's presence depicts His Power over all creation, His Reign as King of kings, His Essence as the Truine God, His Sovereignty having all authority, His Eminence as the only potentate, His Nature as the thrice holy God, the Creator of creation and His Eternal being - the everlasting God.* *In our text, the Psalmist rightly posited that those who dwell in the secret place of the Most High, in His presence, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. *INTRODUCTION* Fire can be one of humanity's greatest blessings or one of its greatest dangers. *1. Admiration: The Sanctity of Marriage*  a. *Question* Do you align with all the Words of Jesus on marriage? *2. Adultery: The Sins of the Married* a. *Question* Can a believer obey this Word of Christ without grace? *3. Acceptability: The Separation from Mess* a. *Question* Do you have this grace? It can be received by asking. *Prayer Points* 1.Father, we thank You for the institution of marriage and the available grace to do Your will 🙏. 2.Pray against getting into unscriptural marriage. 🙏. 3.Ask for the abundance of grace and fruit of the Spirit to live happily with your partner 🙏. 4.Pray for couples in the church that God will visit their marriages and make it happy and fulfilling. Pray for the unmarried that they will not fall into the snare of wrong partnyers🙏. *HYMN:* Gracious Spirit dwell with me *BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:* EXODUS 30-32. 2. Morning Prayer for today. MP.i. Morning Prayer He hath showed thee, O man, what [is] good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? ⏤ Micah 6:8 The closer you live to God, the smaller everything else appears. ⏤ Corrie Ten Boom O God, just as Enoch walked with You, we desire to walk with You today. • “Bible Ni Scam?” — David, Solomon, and the Polygamy Question

One of the common objections people raise when discussing the Bible is this:
“If David and Solomon had many wives, why is polygamy considered wrong for Christians today? Doesn’t that make the Bible contradictory?”
Some go further and say, “Bible ni scam.”
At first glance, the question sounds compelling. After all, David was called a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22), and Solomon was renowned for wisdom. Yet both had multiple wives. So was God okay with polygamy then but against it now?
To answer this well, we must understand an important principle of biblical interpretation:
The Bible records many things it does not approve.
There is a difference between what Scripture describes and what it prescribes.
Not everything recorded in the Bible is an example to follow.

    God’s Original Design for Marriage
To understand God’s view on marriage, we must go back to the beginning.
    Genesis 2:24 (KJV) says:
“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”
    Notice the language carefully:
    wife — singular.
    Not wives.
From creation, God established marriage as a covenant union between one man and one woman, becoming one flesh.
Jesus later reaffirmed this same design.
    Matthew 19:4–6 says:
“Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female… Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”
This means God’s standard for marriage did not begin in the New Testament—it was established in Eden.
Monogamy was God’s design from the start.

    Permitted Does Not Mean Approved
So why did men like David and Solomon have multiple wives?
The answer lies in understanding how God sometimes deals with human rebellion and cultural brokenness.
There are things God permits in history that do not reflect His perfect will.
For example, Israel demanded a human king in 1 Samuel 8. God allowed it, though He made it clear that their demand came from rejecting His rule.
In the same way, polygamy became culturally normalized in many ancient societies. God did not instantly erase every broken social structure, but His tolerance should never be confused with approval.
    Permission is not endorsement.
Just because God allowed something to happen does not mean He called it good.

David’s Household: A Story of Chaos
    David had multiple wives.
But did that produce peace, blessing, and harmony?
    Not at all.
    David’s family became deeply fractured.
    His household experienced:
    sexual sin
    rivalry
    jealousy
    betrayal
    rebellion
    violence
His children turned against one another.
At one point, even his own son Absalom rebelled against him and attempted to seize the throne.
The Bible presents David honestly—not as a flawless hero, but as a man who deeply needed God’s mercy.

    Solomon: Wisdom Without Obedience
Solomon’s case is even more striking.
    He had:
    700 wives
    300 concubines
That number alone should signal excess.
But the deeper issue was spiritual compromise.
    1 Kings 11:3–4 says:
“And his wives turned away his heart… and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God.”
This is exactly what God had warned against.
Long before Solomon was born, God gave kings a clear instruction.
    Deuteronomy 17:17 (KJV) says:
“Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away…”
    Solomon directly violated this command.
And the consequence was devastating: the wisest king in Israel allowed idolatry into the nation.
    That is not biblical approval.
    That is biblical warning.

    The New Testament Standard
When we come to the New Testament, the creation pattern remains unchanged.
Spiritual leadership is described with clarity.
    1 Timothy 3:2 says:
“A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife…”
This reflects the same covenant pattern seen in Genesis.
The standard is not new—it is a reaffirmation of God’s original design.

    So… Is the Bible Contradictory?
    No.
The issue is not contradiction—it is interpretation.
Many people read biblical stories as if every action of a biblical character is something God approves.
    That is a mistake.
    The Bible records:
    Noah’s drunkenness
    David’s adultery
    Solomon’s compromise
    Peter’s denial
Yet in none of these cases does God call sin righteousness.
The Bible is remarkably honest about human failure.
In fact, that honesty strengthens its credibility.
If the Bible were merely propaganda, it would hide the flaws of its heroes.
    Instead, Scripture exposes them.
    Why?
Because the central message of the Bible is not:
“Look at how perfect these men were.”
    The message is:
“Look at how faithful God remains despite human weakness.”

    Final Thoughts
So, was polygamy okay for David and Solomon?
No—not in the sense of divine approval.
It was recorded, but never presented as God’s ideal.
    And the consequences speak loudly.
Polygamy in Scripture repeatedly reveals brokenness, conflict, compromise, and pain.
God’s design has always been clear: one man, one woman, one covenant.
Therefore, when someone says “Bible ni scam” because of David and Solomon, the better response is this:
Not everything found in the Bible is something God commands. Some things are recorded as warnings, not examples.
And perhaps that is one of Scripture’s greatest strengths—it tells the truth about humanity without editing out our failures.

  • A Little Light Reading.
Who are the sons of God.

    Doug Bachelor.

October 30, 1938. It was the night
    just before Halloween, and many
    Americans were tuning their radios
to the Columbia Broadcasting System, which
had just finished reporting on the weather
and began playing music. Within moments,
the broadcast was interrupted by a news flash
about strange explosions on Mars. The an-
nouncer reassured the audience that as more
    information became available, more an-
nouncements would be made. Then the mu-
    sic continued.
As the night progressed, the music was
    interrupted frequently, now with terrifying
reports of an invasion. Aliens from Mars had
landed in New Jersey and in cities around
the world. The Earth was under a full-scale
attack. Many listening to the broadcast pan-
icked, and some even fled their homes for
    the hills.
    But it was all fiction.
A young Orson Wells had adapted the H.G.
Wells book War of the Worlds for broadcast
and modified the script to present the story as
though it were happening in real time. Many
listeners took the fiction to be real.
Those who panicked were operating with
incomplete information. They had failed to
hear the station announce at the beginning
and the end of the broadcast that it was all
mere drama. Coming in at the middle, hear-
ing only part of the story, they had no context
and ran off thinking the sky was falling.
Similarly, there is a passage in the book of
Genesis that, when read out of context, has
caused many to believe the Earth has been in-
vaded by aliens from outer space. Let’s take a
    look at that puzzling verse:
And it came to pass, when men began
to multiply on the face of the earth, and
daughters were born unto them, that Who Are the Sons of God? 3
the sons of God saw the daughters of
men that they were fair; and they took
them wives of all which they chose
    (Genesis 6:1, 2, emphasis added).
It’s a phrase that runs all the way through
the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation: “sons
of God.” So I think it is important to make
sure we understand what it is really saying,
    don’t you?
Some believe that the term “sons of God”
refers to extraterrestrial invaders. They be-
lieve that these beings are fallen angels or evil
aliens from space who took female humans as
wives and produced some notable offspring.
They rationalize this belief by saying that this
is the only explanation for why the progeny
produced by these unions were “giants” (v. 4).
They also believe these unholy unions were
ultimately responsible for the increased wick-
edness of man that led to the Flood.
    Some Bible translations flat-out say,
“Some of their daughters were so beauti-
ful that supernatural beings came down and
married the ones they wanted” (CEV). This
translation, however, doesn’t line up very well 4 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted:
with the original Hebrew. Around the time of
Christ, moreover, a lot of apocryphal books
were in circulation; some of these works also
have these kinds of strange interpretations
    in them.
For instance, have you heard of the book
of Enoch? It’s not in the Bible, but it is briefly
mentioned in the book of Jude. The writer of
Jude actually quotes a few lines from Enoch,
which was a popular apocryphal work from
the time of Christ. (It wasn’t actually written
by Enoch.) It was a book of fables, similar to
the more modern The Pilgrim’s Progress.
Jude pulled a kernel of truth from the
book of Enoch, but it should not be viewed
as an endorsement for the veracity of every-
thing else in the book of Enoch. Likewise, one
could preach a Spirit-filled sermon while giv-
ing a quote or two from John Bunyan, sharing
a small kernel of truth from his allegories. It
doesn’t mean the stories are true.
    Remember, no Christian religious author-
    ity—the Catholics nor the Protestants—chose
to put the book of Enoch into the final canon
of their faiths. They recognized it was more
mythological than truth, and it certainly was Who Are the Sons of God? 5
not inspired on an equal level with the Bible,
    if at all.
Now that you understand its place, here’s
what the book of Enoch says about the sons
    of God:
It happened after the sons of men had
multiplied in those days and daughters
were born to them elegant and beau-
tiful and when the angels, the sons of
heaven beheld them, they became en-
amored of them and they said to each
other, come, let us select ourselves
wives from the prodigy of men and let
    us beget children (7:1).
Some of the early church leaders read this
line, blinked twice, and figured it might have
indeed happened that way. As a result, some
of God’s people have never totally shaken this
fable from their set of beliefs. However, it is a
fanciful interpretation that, if taken seriously,
actually causes enormous problems with a lot
    of other Bible teachings.
In fact, there is another important reason
to understand this passage. The things that 6 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted:
happen in Genesis 6, the first few verses espe-
cially, reflect the conditions of the world that
led to the destruction of the Earth by a flood
in the time of Noah. And these things are be-
ing repeated in our day. So it is good for us
to understand what the Bible is really saying
here and what it is not saying.
On the surface, claiming that the “sons
of God” refers to fallen angels might seem to
be an intriguing conclusion. But as we shall
see, without understanding the context that
surrounds this passage, you can actually be
confused into believing that certain myths
    are real.
If there’s ever any confusion about what
Scripture tells us, it’s generally due to a lack
of information. When the religious leaders
were confused about marriage in heaven,
Jesus said to them, “Do ye not therefore err,
because ye know not the scriptures, neither
the power of God?” (Mark 12:24). In other
words, Jesus is saying here, “You don’t un-
derstand what I’m saying because you don’t
know the Word of God.” Fortunately, we can
clear up any confusion regarding the sons of
God quite easily by gathering a little more Who Are the Sons of God? 7
information from the Bible and comparing
    Scripture with Scripture.
    Angels Are Spirits
The King James Bible uses the term
“sons of God” 11 times in two primary ways.
However, it never uses the term to refer to an
    angelic being.
“Who maketh his angels spirits” (Psalm
104:4). Angels are spirits; they are not flesh. They
are all around us now, but we cannot see them.
They generally remain in their spiritual form
and have very little physical integration in our
world—they don’t go to school, get jobs, or raise
families. They are here to “minister for them who
shall be heirs of salvation” (Hebrews 1:14).
Even if they wanted to marry and have
babies, they couldn’t; they don’t have human
DNA. It would be easier for a jellyfish to mar-
ry a mountain goat than for angels to marry
people. Thus, it doesn’t make any practical
sense to believe that our passage in Genesis
refers to the marriage of angels, fallen or holy,
    to humans.
Angels are not born; they are created. If
God wanted more angels, He wouldn’t need 8 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted:
to marry them off to humans or other an-
gels to reproduce. He could create them from
scratch. Speaking of Lucifer, God said, “The
workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was
prepared for you on the day you were created
    (Ezekiel 28:13 NKJV, emphasis added).
Moreover, Jesus tells us plainly that angels
do not marry. Marriage is a uniquely human
institution, reserved for mankind. “For in the
resurrection they neither marry, nor are giv-
en in marriage, but are as the angels of God
in heaven” (Matthew 22:30). Mark and Luke
suggest the same thing: “Neither can they die
    any more: for they are equal unto the angels;
    and are the children of God” (Luke 20:36;
some translations render it “sons of God”).
Notice here that Jesus makes a distinction be-
tween angels and sons of God. They are classi-
fied separately, which means they are not the
    same thing.
So if the sons of God are not angels, then
    who or what are they?
    Cosmic Life?
While the sons of God in our passage were
not space invaders, the Bible does appear to Who Are the Sons of God? 9
teach that there is other life out there in the
cosmos. It is clear in Scripture that Jesus made
other planets: God “has in these last days spo-
ken to us by His Son, whom He has appoint-
ed heir of all things, through whom also He
made the worlds” (Hebrews 1:2 NKJV).
In the parable of the lost sheep, the Earth
represents the one lost sheep, a wandering
world that went astray, the one Christ came
to save. It’s easy to imagine that God, in His
infinite existence, created other worlds with
other physical beings. Of course, we know
He had seraphim and cherubim and other
angels prior to our world, so at a minimum
we know there are at least those extrater-
restrial creatures. “For by Him all things
were created that are in heaven and that are
on earth” (Colossians 1:16 NKJV). “And ev-
ery creature which is in heaven and on the
earth … I heard saying: ‘Blessing and honor
and glory and power be to Him who sits on
the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and
    ever!’” (Revelation 5:13 NKJV).
However, it is more than likely that most
of these other created beings do not visit this
world. You might say that the Earth is infected 10 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted:
with a deadly contagious disease called sin,
and we are quarantined. The only ones al-
lowed to go into a quarantined hospital ward
are the hospital staff; in this case, God is the
head physician, and His angels are the minis-
    tering spirits.
    Princes of Planets
Thousands of years ago, an intriguing “out
of this world” meeting took place in heaven.
“Now there was a day when the sons of God
came to present themselves before the Lord,
and Satan came also among them” (Job 1:6).
In attendance at this meeting are sons of
God, as well as Satan himself. Satan says that
he has come from the Earth. The sons of God
were there representing their unfallen worlds
in God’s universe. Satan was there to repre-
    sent the Earth.
Why would Satan be representing our
world? Originally, Adam had dominion over
the Earth. He was created by God to subdue
and manage it. God said to Adam and Eve,
“Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over
the fowl of the air, and over every living thing
that moveth upon the earth” (Genesis 1:28). Who Are the Sons of God? 11
While Adam was in obedience to God, he
enjoyed headship over the world. But once
Adam sinned and obeyed Satan, that domin-
ion was forfeited to the enemy. “To whom you
present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that
one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin
leading to death, or of obedience leading to
    righteousness” (Romans 6:16 NKJV).
Even Jesus referred to Satan as “the prince
of this world” (John 12:31). In fact, in Matthew
4:8–10, Satan offers to transfer dominion of
the Earth to Jesus—if Jesus would only bow
down and worship him. It makes sense that
Satan could not give away dominion of the
Earth if it wasn’t his to give. So when God
calls a meeting of world governors, or “sons
of God,” Satan attends to represent the Earth.
In the Gospel of Luke, the genealogy of
Jesus is traced all the way back to Adam.
Notice what Luke says about this lineage: “the
son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which
was the son of Adam, which was the son of
    God” (Luke 3:38, emphasis added).
The difference between Seth and Adam
is the bellybutton. Adam was created by the
hand of God; Seth was born of Eve. Adam 12 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted:
was the son of God, created to have dominion
over the Earth. Thus, one definition for sons
of God is those beings God Himself created
to have dominion over the worlds He made.
These beings were not born but were created
    directly by God.
Job 38:7 tells us that when our world was
created, “the morning stars sang together,
and all the sons of God shouted for joy.” The
“morning stars” are angels, whereas “the sons
of God” are the leaders of other worlds. (See
    Revelation 1:20.)
With that cleared up, let’s talk about the
second way the term “sons of God” is used.
    Heirs of Righteousness
The other meaning of sons of God refers
to human beings who have been recreated by
    God’s Spirit.
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of
God, they are the sons of God” (Romans 8:14).
Matthew 5:9 adds, “Blessed are the peace-
makers, for they shall be called sons of God”
(NKJV). Here Jesus is obviously referring to
    human beings, but not just any human beings;
these are peacemakers, the righteous children Who Are the Sons of God? 13
of God. In no way should this be construed to
    refer to angels or aliens.
“But as many as received him, to them gave
he power to become the sons of God, even to
them that believe on his name” (John 1:12).
Notice that there were those who were not
sons of God, but that through receiving Him
became sons of God. “For as many as are led
by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God”
    (Romans 8:14).
It should be mentioned that “sons of God”
doesn’t mean just males. Many Bible trans-
lations render the phrase “children of God.”
Galatians 3:26 says, “For ye are all the chil-
dren of God by faith in Christ Jesus.” It is by
faith that a man or woman becomes a “child
of God.” And, of course, some verses do men-
tion God’s adopted sons and daughters. “Even
to them I will give in My house and within
My walls a place and a name better than that
of sons and daughters; I will give them an
everlasting name that shall not be cut off ”
    (Isaiah 56:5 NKJV).
To redeem them that were under the
law, that we might receive the adoption 14 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted:
of sons. And because ye are sons, God
hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son
into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
Wherefore thou art no more a ser-
vant, but a son; and if a son, then an
heir through of God through Christ
    (Galatians 4:5–7; see also Isaiah 56:5;
    Philippians 2:15).
    The inescapable conclusion from these
verses and others is that “the sons of God”
in Genesis 6 refers to the righteous children
    of God.
    Daughters of Men
This would mean the term “daughters of
men,” used in Genesis 6, refers to the daugh-
ters of the unrighteous children of men, or
those human beings who do not call on the
name of the Lord. In the context of our Bible
passage, “daughters of men” refers to the off-
spring of Cain and his wife.
Before moving on, I’d like to tackle one
of the most popular questions skeptics enjoy
posing about the Bible; that is, “Where did
Cain’s wife come from?” This is yet another Who Are the Sons of God? 15
example where you just need to keep reading
to get your answer. Genesis 5:4 tells us that
Adam and Eve had many sons and daugh-
ters. If you lived 930 years, like Adam, and if
you were healthy, fertile, and reproductive for
only 20 percent of your life, you would still
have around 200 childbearing years. With
God’s command to be fruitful and multiply,
no doubt Adam and Eve’s progeny became
    quite numerous.
    Considering the near perfect vitality
and health experienced by the first genera-
tions … well, they probably had throngs of
children. So Cain undoubtedly took one of
his many sisters as his wife. At this point in
Bible history, when man’s genetic vitality was
at its peak, there was nothing forbidding the
    practice. Abraham married his half-sister
(Genesis 20:2). Isaac married his cousin. It
was not until the time of Moses that mar-
rying a sister was forbidden, likely because
of the greater risk of genetic weakness and
    health complications with the offspring
    (Deuteronomy 27:22).
At first, Adam and Eve had two sons, Cain
and Abel. Cain murdered Abel, so God gave 16 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted:
Adam and Eve another son, Seth. He began to
have children of his own, and they “began to
call on the name of the Lord” (Genesis 4:25,26
NKJV). And from what we’ve seen in the
Bible, those who call on the name of the Lord
are called the sons of God. “But as many as re-
ceived him, to them gave he power to become
the sons of God, even to them that believe on
his name” (John 1:12). “And it shall come to
pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of
the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21).
Now Cain had been banished from God’s
presence after he murdered his brother. He
settled “in the land of Nod, on the east of
Eden. And Cain knew his wife; and she con-
ceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city,
and called the name of the city, after the name
of his son, Enoch” (Genesis 4:16–18).
Here, before the Flood, we have the de-
scendants of Cain living in cities and the de-
scendants of Seth living in the country. As
long as they remained separate, the sons of
God remained pure in their religious beliefs
    and practices.
However, eventually they began to in-
termingle. Maybe the sons of God needed Who Are the Sons of God? 17
supplies that could be more easily obtained
in the cities where the daughters of men
resided. The sons of God and daughters of
men became familiar with each other, even
friendly. Whatever the case, soon the godly
sons of Seth, or sons of God, captivated by
the beautiful daughters of Cain, began to
marry these “daughters of men,” the descen-
    dants of Cain.
In other words, the sons of God chose to
take wives as they desired—women who were
pleasing to the flesh—without regard to their
moral character. They ignored good advice
and likely did not receive the consent of their
parents, nor did they consult with God and
consider His will in the matter.
    Mixed Marriages
It’s even quite possible the sons of God
went into this situation with good intentions.
Maybe they believed they could convert these
daughters of Cain, introducing them to the
Lord their God. It’s also possible the daugh-
ters of Cain enticed the sons of God with
promises, saying they would eventually fol-
low the Lord. 18 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted:
However, the counsel of God could not be
    clearer:
“Be ye not unequally yoked together
    with unbelievers: for what fellowship
    hath righteousness with unrighteous-
ness? and what communion hath light
with darkness? And what concord hath
Christ with Belial? or what part hath
he that believeth with an infidel? And
what agreement hath the temple of
God with idols? for ye are the temple of
the living God; as God hath said, I will
dwell in them, and walk in them; and
I will be their God, and they shall be
my people. Wherefore come out from
among them, and be ye separate, saith
the Lord, and touch not the unclean
thing; and I will receive you. And will
be a Father unto you, and ye shall be
my sons and daughters, saith the Lord
    Almighty” (2 Corinthians 6:14–18).
God does not want His children marrying
the unconverted or the unbelieving, even if
they have a pretty face, the nicest disposition, Who Are the Sons of God? 19
or a passionate belief in regarding the spiri-
tual realm. It makes no difference; God says
    that relationship will have problems.
Praise be to God that He is merciful.
Sometimes He blesses us in spite of our rebel-
lion and bad decisions. There have been situa-
tions in which believers marry unbelievers and
the unbeliever eventually comes around. It was
still wrong to get married. The words of God are
unmistakable: Do not be unequally yoked. But
with repentance and submission, God forgives.
If that weren’t true, there would be no hope for
most of us. God sometimes alleviates the con-
sequences of our bad choices, but it is unwise
to knowingly ignore His counsel. You become
part of the problem that will lead to great wick-
edness in the world when all the thoughts of
men’s hearts are only evil continually.
So the results of these intermarriages were
not only giants, but sorrow. Instead of the sons
of God influencing the daughters of men, the
daughters of men influenced the sons of God.
    Neither shalt thou make marriages
with them; thy daughter thou shalt
not give unto his son, nor his daughter 20 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted:
shalt thou take unto thy son. For they
will turn away thy son from following
me, that they may serve other gods: so
will the anger of the Lord be kindled
against you, and destroy thee suddenly
    (Deuteronomy 7:3, 4; emphasis added).
The Bible is filled with stories about the
sons of God mingling with the daughters of
men and the disasters that follow as a result.
Samson, chosen by God, was derailed by the
Philistine women. His parents pled with him
to avoid marrying a pagan bride, but he insist-
ed on having what he wanted. “Then his father
and mother said to him, ‘Is there no woman
among the daughters of your brethren, or
among all my people, that you must go and get
a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?’
And Samson said to his father, ‘Get her for me,
for she pleases me well’ ” (Judges 14:3).
Likewise, King Solomon no doubt be-
lieved that he could marry the daughters from
pagan nations and, with his unsurpassed wis-
dom, convert them. However, those pagan
daughters drew away Solomon’s heart. This
is why God is so adamant about His children Who Are the Sons of God? 21
not marrying unbelievers. It is almost al-
ways the case that the believer is gradually
transformed by the unbeliever, not the other
    way around.
Jesus likewise has a warning for us in these
    end-times:
But as the days of Ayibanuwa Simon Ambakederemo were, so shall
also the coming of the Son of man be.
For as in the days that were before the
flood they were eating and drinking,
marrying and giving in marriage, un-
til the day that Ayibanuwa Simon Ambakederemo entered into the
    ark (Matthew 24:37, 38).
Jesus here is likely referring to the mixed
marriages of Genesis 6 that brought on the
universal wickedness leading to the Flood.
As in Noah’s day, before the Flood, things
that led to the destruction of the world with
a deluge by water are going to happen again.
The pre-Flood events are a preview of what’s
going to happen before the destruction of the
world by a flood of fire when Jesus comes
again. History is going to repeat itself, but we
don’t have to be among the repeat offenders. 22 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted:
    Polygamy
Mixed marriages between the sons of God
and daughters of men were not the only re-
sult of disobedience. In Genesis 6:2, we read
that “they took them wives of all which they
chose.” This is also where polygamy began.
“And Lamech took unto him two wives:
the name of the one was Adah, and the name
of the other Zillah” (Genesis 4:19). Lamech
was one of the sons of Cain, and he took two
wives. So it wasn’t just marrying out of one’s
faith that went against God’s will, it was mar-
rying more than one person. The sanctity of
marriage was being lost, even at the begin-
    ning of time.
This sounds like what’s happening in our
world today. It’s only gotten worse!
For instance, a popular American reality
television program, called Sister Wives, docu-
ments the life of a polygamist family living
in Lehi, Utah, which includes the man, Kody
Brown, his four wives, and their 16 children.
The Brown family sued the state of Utah be-
cause of its bigamy laws, claiming they’re a
violation of their rights based on the First and
Fourteenth Amendments. The whole nation Who Are the Sons of God? 23
was watching because the same arguments
are being used for people who say they’re in
love with a person of the same gender; with
that objection out of the way, a person could
easily claim they are in love with two or three
    or four people.
When the sons of God rejected the sanc-
tity of their wedding vows, the peculiarity
of their faith, the importance of the distinc-
tion between men and women—one mom,
    one dad, God’s design for a family—violence
soon filled the land and the thoughts of men’s
hearts were only evil continually. Jesus says
this will happen again at the end of time, right
before the “coming of the Son of man.”
That time has very much arrived. Turn
on the television and flip to almost any sta-
tion; you’re going to see promiscuity, perver-
sion, divorce, deception, and a whole lot of
violence. So many programs are built around
killing and murder, while the sanctity of mar-
    riage is constantly being ridiculed.
But God says, “My spirit shall not always
strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his
days shall be an hundred and twenty years”
(Genesis 6:3). God looked into the future and 24 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted:
saw where all this wickedness was leading
men and determined that it would have to
end. Christ said later, “And except those days
should be shortened, there should no flesh be
saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall
    be shortened” (Matthew 24:22).
In the end times, God will have to do it
again for the elect’s sake. For 120 years, the
Spirit of God, through the preaching and
example of Noah and his family, strove with
that generation that was imprisoned by sin.
They refused to listen. When Noah and his
family entered the ark and the door was shut,
there were only eight people inside that still
believed God. Probation was closed for the
rest. For seven more days life went on outside
the ark for that amalgamated race of Cain and
Seth, whose descendants had sacrificed their
purity and had given themselves over to evil.
Are you pure today? God says to you, “My
spirit will not … always strive with man.” Will
    you listen?
    A Giant Problem
You might be thinking that I have forgot-
ten to address the “giants” who were born as a Who Are the Sons of God? 25
result of the sons of God marrying the daugh-
ters of men. If the sons of God were merely the
righteous offspring of Seth and the daughters
of men were the female descendants of Cain,
then why were the children of these unions
giants and mighty men? How do we explain
the offspring of these unfortunate but human
    marriages?
Well, I believe it’s a simple law of genetics
    in play called “genetic vitality.”
First, giants have always been around.
For example, take Robert Wadlow, born in
Alton, Illinois, in 1918. At birth he weighed
a normal eight pounds, six ounces. At six
months, he weighed 30 pounds. A year lat-
er, at 18 months, he weighed 62 pounds. He
wasn’t fat; he was tall. He continued to grow
at an astounding rate, reaching 6 feet, 2 inch-
es and 195 pounds by the time he was eight.
When he was 13, he became the world’s tall-
est Boy Scout. At 13, he was 7 feet, 4 inches
tall. Eventually, Robert reached a height of
nearly 9 feet! (In comparison, Goliath was
about 9 feet, 6 inches.) Robert’s height ac-
tually qualified him as the tallest person in
modern history. 26 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted:
But this oversize fame wasn’t always easy
for him. His clothing required three times
the normal amount of cloth, and his size 37
shoes cost thousands of dollars a pair—and
that was back during the Great Depression.
When Robert turned 20, the International
Shoe Company provided his shoes for free
and hired him to promote the company.
That’s all he did for an income. He visited
more than 800 towns in 41 states and trav-
eled 300,000 miles on his goodwill tour.
The shoe company had to modify a car so
he could get in, removing the front seat so
he could sit in the back and stretch out his
    long legs.
Even though he was of enormous size, he
was very good natured, intelligent, and gen-
tle. People were always giving him shocked
stares. They would ask him, “Does it bother
you when everyone stares at you?” He would
reply, “Oh, I just look above it all.” He tried
to maintain a normal life, enjoying stamp
collecting and photography. He’d even take
pictures of people taking pictures of him.
Robert was a modern-day giant, with no
need of fallen angels nor aliens to produce Who Are the Sons of God? 27
him or explain his existence. The giant off-
spring of the sons of God and daughters of
men likely resulted from genetic vitality.
When a people group is isolated for years
and only intermarry with one another, like
some Pacific Islanders do, the gene pool be-
comes restricted and more prone to birth
    defects and genetic abnormalities. After
several generations of this kind of isolation,
when they finally marry outside their island
or tribe, the children of those unions tend to
be more healthy, robust, and, yes, even big-
ger. The biggest cats in the world are ligers, a
    hybrid between tigers and lions.
    Adoption Choices
Not everyone who thinks he or she is a son
or daughter of God really is.
The Pharisees, the religious leaders of the
day, boasted to Jesus that they were the chil-
dren of Abraham. Jesus corrected them. “If
ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the
works of Abraham” (John 8:39). You might
not get a real sense of how scandalous this
statement was for Jesus to say when you read
it at first—but it so publicly embarrassed the 28 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted:
Pharisees that they eagerly began seeking His
death. But Jesus didn’t stop there …
Jesus said unto them, If God were your
Father, ye would love me: for I proceed-
ed forth and came from God; neither
came I of myself, but he sent me. Why
do ye not understand my speech? even
because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are
of your father the devil, and the lusts of
your father ye will do (John 8:42–44).
This is a simple principle to test our true
heritage. Which “father” do we follow in our
actions? The Pharisees were leaders in the
church, yet that did not give them security.
Just being a member of a synagogue or just
being Jewish did not make them children of
God. Today, just by being on the books in
your church does not make you a son or a
daughter of God. Instead, we are the children
of the one whom we obey. Whose desires we
do, that is our father, whether of righteous-
ness or of sin (Romans 6:16).
That’s pretty serious. So whose child are
you? Are you a child of God? Who Are the Sons of God? 29
When we are born again and are adopted
into the family of God, we will want to imitate
our heavenly Father. “He who says he abides
in Him ought himself also to walk just as He
    walked” (1 John 2:6 NKJV).
If you are not a son or daughter of God
now, the wonderful news is that you can
    choose a new family.
By faith Moses, when he became of
age, refused to be called the son of
    Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather
to suffer affliction with the people of
God than to enjoy the passing plea-
sures of sin, esteeming the reproach of
Christ greater riches than the treasures
in Egypt; for he looked to the reward
    (Hebrews 11:24–26 NKJV).
When called by God, Moses traded in
his Egyptian adoption for a heavenly one.
    Through Jesus, you can too.
When the fullness of the time had
come, God sent forth His Son, born
of a woman, born under the law, to 30 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted:
redeem those who were under the
law, that we might receive the adop-
tion as sons. And because you are
sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of
His Son into your hearts, crying out,
“Abba, Father!” Therefore you are no
longer a slave but a son, and if a son,
then an heir of God through Christ
    (Galatians 4:4–7 NKJV).
Jaycee Lee Dugard was 11 years old when
she was kidnapped at a bus stop on June
10, 1991, by Phillip Garrido and his wife
Nancy. She was kept in a soundproof shack
that was isolated from public view. Cruelly
held as a slave, she also fathered children for
the Garridos for 18 years. After a while, this
circumstance became normal for her. It be-
came ordinary. She had come to believe that
she was part of the Garrido family, but she
later found out what kind of fiends Phillip
and Nancy really were. Fortunately, she was
    eventually discovered and delivered from
that terrible condition and was reintroduced
to her real family. Talk about a total change
of a life! Who Are the Sons of God? 31
Similarly, the devil has kidnapped a lot of
people in this world who should be children
of God. He’s taken them and abused them,
and he has manipulated them into thinking
they are with their true family. They are con-
vinced that the lies of the devil are the truth,
that he is their friend. Phillip Garrido made
that claim over Jaycee. Perhaps even you have
gotten so used to the devil, you think you are
part of his family. You have become comfort-
able having him around. But he’s a kidnapper,
an abuser. You’ve got to wake up and hear
Jesus saying that you can be free.
Phillip Garrido was sentenced to 431 years
in prison. His wife was sentenced to 36 years.
Jaycee received a $20 million settlement from
the state, plus a big book deal. She’ll probably
be okay financially if she manages her money
well for the rest of her life. What a change of
fortune from living in a hovel in some per-
    vert’s backyard—to being liberated, finding
your real family, living a clean life, living a
normal life, and suddenly going from poverty
to riches. What a radical transformation!
That’s what the Lord wants to do for us.
Right now, you can choose to be a child of
the King, an heir of eternal life, and become
a son or daughter of God in whom He is well
    pleased! Just ask Him.
A Little Light Reading. Who are the sons of God. Doug Bachelor. October 30, 1938. It was the night just before Halloween, and many Americans were tuning their radios to the Columbia Broadcasting System, which had just finished reporting on the weather and began playing music. Within moments, the broadcast was interrupted by a news flash about strange explosions on Mars. The an- nouncer reassured the audience that as more information became available, more an- nouncements would be made. Then the mu- sic continued. As the night progressed, the music was interrupted frequently, now with terrifying reports of an invasion. Aliens from Mars had landed in New Jersey and in cities around the world. The Earth was under a full-scale attack. Many listening to the broadcast pan- icked, and some even fled their homes for the hills. But it was all fiction. A young Orson Wells had adapted the H.G. Wells book War of the Worlds for broadcast and modified the script to present the story as though it were happening in real time. Many listeners took the fiction to be real. Those who panicked were operating with incomplete information. They had failed to hear the station announce at the beginning and the end of the broadcast that it was all mere drama. Coming in at the middle, hear- ing only part of the story, they had no context and ran off thinking the sky was falling. Similarly, there is a passage in the book of Genesis that, when read out of context, has caused many to believe the Earth has been in- vaded by aliens from outer space. Let’s take a look at that puzzling verse: And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, that Who Are the Sons of God? 3 the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose (Genesis 6:1, 2, emphasis added). It’s a phrase that runs all the way through the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation: “sons of God.” So I think it is important to make sure we understand what it is really saying, don’t you? Some believe that the term “sons of God” refers to extraterrestrial invaders. They be- lieve that these beings are fallen angels or evil aliens from space who took female humans as wives and produced some notable offspring. They rationalize this belief by saying that this is the only explanation for why the progeny produced by these unions were “giants” (v. 4). They also believe these unholy unions were ultimately responsible for the increased wick- edness of man that led to the Flood. Some Bible translations flat-out say, “Some of their daughters were so beauti- ful that supernatural beings came down and married the ones they wanted” (CEV). This translation, however, doesn’t line up very well 4 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted: with the original Hebrew. Around the time of Christ, moreover, a lot of apocryphal books were in circulation; some of these works also have these kinds of strange interpretations in them. For instance, have you heard of the book of Enoch? It’s not in the Bible, but it is briefly mentioned in the book of Jude. The writer of Jude actually quotes a few lines from Enoch, which was a popular apocryphal work from the time of Christ. (It wasn’t actually written by Enoch.) It was a book of fables, similar to the more modern The Pilgrim’s Progress. Jude pulled a kernel of truth from the book of Enoch, but it should not be viewed as an endorsement for the veracity of every- thing else in the book of Enoch. Likewise, one could preach a Spirit-filled sermon while giv- ing a quote or two from John Bunyan, sharing a small kernel of truth from his allegories. It doesn’t mean the stories are true. Remember, no Christian religious author- ity—the Catholics nor the Protestants—chose to put the book of Enoch into the final canon of their faiths. They recognized it was more mythological than truth, and it certainly was Who Are the Sons of God? 5 not inspired on an equal level with the Bible, if at all. Now that you understand its place, here’s what the book of Enoch says about the sons of God: It happened after the sons of men had multiplied in those days and daughters were born to them elegant and beau- tiful and when the angels, the sons of heaven beheld them, they became en- amored of them and they said to each other, come, let us select ourselves wives from the prodigy of men and let us beget children (7:1). Some of the early church leaders read this line, blinked twice, and figured it might have indeed happened that way. As a result, some of God’s people have never totally shaken this fable from their set of beliefs. However, it is a fanciful interpretation that, if taken seriously, actually causes enormous problems with a lot of other Bible teachings. In fact, there is another important reason to understand this passage. The things that 6 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted: happen in Genesis 6, the first few verses espe- cially, reflect the conditions of the world that led to the destruction of the Earth by a flood in the time of Noah. And these things are be- ing repeated in our day. So it is good for us to understand what the Bible is really saying here and what it is not saying. On the surface, claiming that the “sons of God” refers to fallen angels might seem to be an intriguing conclusion. But as we shall see, without understanding the context that surrounds this passage, you can actually be confused into believing that certain myths are real. If there’s ever any confusion about what Scripture tells us, it’s generally due to a lack of information. When the religious leaders were confused about marriage in heaven, Jesus said to them, “Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God?” (Mark 12:24). In other words, Jesus is saying here, “You don’t un- derstand what I’m saying because you don’t know the Word of God.” Fortunately, we can clear up any confusion regarding the sons of God quite easily by gathering a little more Who Are the Sons of God? 7 information from the Bible and comparing Scripture with Scripture. Angels Are Spirits The King James Bible uses the term “sons of God” 11 times in two primary ways. However, it never uses the term to refer to an angelic being. “Who maketh his angels spirits” (Psalm 104:4). Angels are spirits; they are not flesh. They are all around us now, but we cannot see them. They generally remain in their spiritual form and have very little physical integration in our world—they don’t go to school, get jobs, or raise families. They are here to “minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation” (Hebrews 1:14). Even if they wanted to marry and have babies, they couldn’t; they don’t have human DNA. It would be easier for a jellyfish to mar- ry a mountain goat than for angels to marry people. Thus, it doesn’t make any practical sense to believe that our passage in Genesis refers to the marriage of angels, fallen or holy, to humans. Angels are not born; they are created. If God wanted more angels, He wouldn’t need 8 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted: to marry them off to humans or other an- gels to reproduce. He could create them from scratch. Speaking of Lucifer, God said, “The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared for you on the day you were created (Ezekiel 28:13 NKJV, emphasis added). Moreover, Jesus tells us plainly that angels do not marry. Marriage is a uniquely human institution, reserved for mankind. “For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are giv- en in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven” (Matthew 22:30). Mark and Luke suggest the same thing: “Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God” (Luke 20:36; some translations render it “sons of God”). Notice here that Jesus makes a distinction be- tween angels and sons of God. They are classi- fied separately, which means they are not the same thing. So if the sons of God are not angels, then who or what are they? Cosmic Life? While the sons of God in our passage were not space invaders, the Bible does appear to Who Are the Sons of God? 9 teach that there is other life out there in the cosmos. It is clear in Scripture that Jesus made other planets: God “has in these last days spo- ken to us by His Son, whom He has appoint- ed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds” (Hebrews 1:2 NKJV). In the parable of the lost sheep, the Earth represents the one lost sheep, a wandering world that went astray, the one Christ came to save. It’s easy to imagine that God, in His infinite existence, created other worlds with other physical beings. Of course, we know He had seraphim and cherubim and other angels prior to our world, so at a minimum we know there are at least those extrater- restrial creatures. “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth” (Colossians 1:16 NKJV). “And ev- ery creature which is in heaven and on the earth … I heard saying: ‘Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!’” (Revelation 5:13 NKJV). However, it is more than likely that most of these other created beings do not visit this world. You might say that the Earth is infected 10 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted: with a deadly contagious disease called sin, and we are quarantined. The only ones al- lowed to go into a quarantined hospital ward are the hospital staff; in this case, God is the head physician, and His angels are the minis- tering spirits. Princes of Planets Thousands of years ago, an intriguing “out of this world” meeting took place in heaven. “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them” (Job 1:6). In attendance at this meeting are sons of God, as well as Satan himself. Satan says that he has come from the Earth. The sons of God were there representing their unfallen worlds in God’s universe. Satan was there to repre- sent the Earth. Why would Satan be representing our world? Originally, Adam had dominion over the Earth. He was created by God to subdue and manage it. God said to Adam and Eve, “Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth” (Genesis 1:28). Who Are the Sons of God? 11 While Adam was in obedience to God, he enjoyed headship over the world. But once Adam sinned and obeyed Satan, that domin- ion was forfeited to the enemy. “To whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness” (Romans 6:16 NKJV). Even Jesus referred to Satan as “the prince of this world” (John 12:31). In fact, in Matthew 4:8–10, Satan offers to transfer dominion of the Earth to Jesus—if Jesus would only bow down and worship him. It makes sense that Satan could not give away dominion of the Earth if it wasn’t his to give. So when God calls a meeting of world governors, or “sons of God,” Satan attends to represent the Earth. In the Gospel of Luke, the genealogy of Jesus is traced all the way back to Adam. Notice what Luke says about this lineage: “the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God” (Luke 3:38, emphasis added). The difference between Seth and Adam is the bellybutton. Adam was created by the hand of God; Seth was born of Eve. Adam 12 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted: was the son of God, created to have dominion over the Earth. Thus, one definition for sons of God is those beings God Himself created to have dominion over the worlds He made. These beings were not born but were created directly by God. Job 38:7 tells us that when our world was created, “the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy.” The “morning stars” are angels, whereas “the sons of God” are the leaders of other worlds. (See Revelation 1:20.) With that cleared up, let’s talk about the second way the term “sons of God” is used. Heirs of Righteousness The other meaning of sons of God refers to human beings who have been recreated by God’s Spirit. “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God” (Romans 8:14). Matthew 5:9 adds, “Blessed are the peace- makers, for they shall be called sons of God” (NKJV). Here Jesus is obviously referring to human beings, but not just any human beings; these are peacemakers, the righteous children Who Are the Sons of God? 13 of God. In no way should this be construed to refer to angels or aliens. “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12). Notice that there were those who were not sons of God, but that through receiving Him became sons of God. “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God” (Romans 8:14). It should be mentioned that “sons of God” doesn’t mean just males. Many Bible trans- lations render the phrase “children of God.” Galatians 3:26 says, “For ye are all the chil- dren of God by faith in Christ Jesus.” It is by faith that a man or woman becomes a “child of God.” And, of course, some verses do men- tion God’s adopted sons and daughters. “Even to them I will give in My house and within My walls a place and a name better than that of sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that shall not be cut off ” (Isaiah 56:5 NKJV). To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption 14 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted: of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a ser- vant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through of God through Christ (Galatians 4:5–7; see also Isaiah 56:5; Philippians 2:15). The inescapable conclusion from these verses and others is that “the sons of God” in Genesis 6 refers to the righteous children of God. Daughters of Men This would mean the term “daughters of men,” used in Genesis 6, refers to the daugh- ters of the unrighteous children of men, or those human beings who do not call on the name of the Lord. In the context of our Bible passage, “daughters of men” refers to the off- spring of Cain and his wife. Before moving on, I’d like to tackle one of the most popular questions skeptics enjoy posing about the Bible; that is, “Where did Cain’s wife come from?” This is yet another Who Are the Sons of God? 15 example where you just need to keep reading to get your answer. Genesis 5:4 tells us that Adam and Eve had many sons and daugh- ters. If you lived 930 years, like Adam, and if you were healthy, fertile, and reproductive for only 20 percent of your life, you would still have around 200 childbearing years. With God’s command to be fruitful and multiply, no doubt Adam and Eve’s progeny became quite numerous. Considering the near perfect vitality and health experienced by the first genera- tions … well, they probably had throngs of children. So Cain undoubtedly took one of his many sisters as his wife. At this point in Bible history, when man’s genetic vitality was at its peak, there was nothing forbidding the practice. Abraham married his half-sister (Genesis 20:2). Isaac married his cousin. It was not until the time of Moses that mar- rying a sister was forbidden, likely because of the greater risk of genetic weakness and health complications with the offspring (Deuteronomy 27:22). At first, Adam and Eve had two sons, Cain and Abel. Cain murdered Abel, so God gave 16 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted: Adam and Eve another son, Seth. He began to have children of his own, and they “began to call on the name of the Lord” (Genesis 4:25,26 NKJV). And from what we’ve seen in the Bible, those who call on the name of the Lord are called the sons of God. “But as many as re- ceived him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12). “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21). Now Cain had been banished from God’s presence after he murdered his brother. He settled “in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. And Cain knew his wife; and she con- ceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch” (Genesis 4:16–18). Here, before the Flood, we have the de- scendants of Cain living in cities and the de- scendants of Seth living in the country. As long as they remained separate, the sons of God remained pure in their religious beliefs and practices. However, eventually they began to in- termingle. Maybe the sons of God needed Who Are the Sons of God? 17 supplies that could be more easily obtained in the cities where the daughters of men resided. The sons of God and daughters of men became familiar with each other, even friendly. Whatever the case, soon the godly sons of Seth, or sons of God, captivated by the beautiful daughters of Cain, began to marry these “daughters of men,” the descen- dants of Cain. In other words, the sons of God chose to take wives as they desired—women who were pleasing to the flesh—without regard to their moral character. They ignored good advice and likely did not receive the consent of their parents, nor did they consult with God and consider His will in the matter. Mixed Marriages It’s even quite possible the sons of God went into this situation with good intentions. Maybe they believed they could convert these daughters of Cain, introducing them to the Lord their God. It’s also possible the daugh- ters of Cain enticed the sons of God with promises, saying they would eventually fol- low the Lord. 18 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted: However, the counsel of God could not be clearer: “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteous- ness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty” (2 Corinthians 6:14–18). God does not want His children marrying the unconverted or the unbelieving, even if they have a pretty face, the nicest disposition, Who Are the Sons of God? 19 or a passionate belief in regarding the spiri- tual realm. It makes no difference; God says that relationship will have problems. Praise be to God that He is merciful. Sometimes He blesses us in spite of our rebel- lion and bad decisions. There have been situa- tions in which believers marry unbelievers and the unbeliever eventually comes around. It was still wrong to get married. The words of God are unmistakable: Do not be unequally yoked. But with repentance and submission, God forgives. If that weren’t true, there would be no hope for most of us. God sometimes alleviates the con- sequences of our bad choices, but it is unwise to knowingly ignore His counsel. You become part of the problem that will lead to great wick- edness in the world when all the thoughts of men’s hearts are only evil continually. So the results of these intermarriages were not only giants, but sorrow. Instead of the sons of God influencing the daughters of men, the daughters of men influenced the sons of God. Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter 20 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted: shalt thou take unto thy son. For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the Lord be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly (Deuteronomy 7:3, 4; emphasis added). The Bible is filled with stories about the sons of God mingling with the daughters of men and the disasters that follow as a result. Samson, chosen by God, was derailed by the Philistine women. His parents pled with him to avoid marrying a pagan bride, but he insist- ed on having what he wanted. “Then his father and mother said to him, ‘Is there no woman among the daughters of your brethren, or among all my people, that you must go and get a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?’ And Samson said to his father, ‘Get her for me, for she pleases me well’ ” (Judges 14:3). Likewise, King Solomon no doubt be- lieved that he could marry the daughters from pagan nations and, with his unsurpassed wis- dom, convert them. However, those pagan daughters drew away Solomon’s heart. This is why God is so adamant about His children Who Are the Sons of God? 21 not marrying unbelievers. It is almost al- ways the case that the believer is gradually transformed by the unbeliever, not the other way around. Jesus likewise has a warning for us in these end-times: But as the days of [Noah] were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, un- til the day that [Noah] entered into the ark (Matthew 24:37, 38). Jesus here is likely referring to the mixed marriages of Genesis 6 that brought on the universal wickedness leading to the Flood. As in Noah’s day, before the Flood, things that led to the destruction of the world with a deluge by water are going to happen again. The pre-Flood events are a preview of what’s going to happen before the destruction of the world by a flood of fire when Jesus comes again. History is going to repeat itself, but we don’t have to be among the repeat offenders. 22 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted: Polygamy Mixed marriages between the sons of God and daughters of men were not the only re- sult of disobedience. In Genesis 6:2, we read that “they took them wives of all which they chose.” This is also where polygamy began. “And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah” (Genesis 4:19). Lamech was one of the sons of Cain, and he took two wives. So it wasn’t just marrying out of one’s faith that went against God’s will, it was mar- rying more than one person. The sanctity of marriage was being lost, even at the begin- ning of time. This sounds like what’s happening in our world today. It’s only gotten worse! For instance, a popular American reality television program, called Sister Wives, docu- ments the life of a polygamist family living in Lehi, Utah, which includes the man, Kody Brown, his four wives, and their 16 children. The Brown family sued the state of Utah be- cause of its bigamy laws, claiming they’re a violation of their rights based on the First and Fourteenth Amendments. The whole nation Who Are the Sons of God? 23 was watching because the same arguments are being used for people who say they’re in love with a person of the same gender; with that objection out of the way, a person could easily claim they are in love with two or three or four people. When the sons of God rejected the sanc- tity of their wedding vows, the peculiarity of their faith, the importance of the distinc- tion between men and women—one mom, one dad, God’s design for a family—violence soon filled the land and the thoughts of men’s hearts were only evil continually. Jesus says this will happen again at the end of time, right before the “coming of the Son of man.” That time has very much arrived. Turn on the television and flip to almost any sta- tion; you’re going to see promiscuity, perver- sion, divorce, deception, and a whole lot of violence. So many programs are built around killing and murder, while the sanctity of mar- riage is constantly being ridiculed. But God says, “My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years” (Genesis 6:3). God looked into the future and 24 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted: saw where all this wickedness was leading men and determined that it would have to end. Christ said later, “And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened” (Matthew 24:22). In the end times, God will have to do it again for the elect’s sake. For 120 years, the Spirit of God, through the preaching and example of Noah and his family, strove with that generation that was imprisoned by sin. They refused to listen. When Noah and his family entered the ark and the door was shut, there were only eight people inside that still believed God. Probation was closed for the rest. For seven more days life went on outside the ark for that amalgamated race of Cain and Seth, whose descendants had sacrificed their purity and had given themselves over to evil. Are you pure today? God says to you, “My spirit will not … always strive with man.” Will you listen? A Giant Problem You might be thinking that I have forgot- ten to address the “giants” who were born as a Who Are the Sons of God? 25 result of the sons of God marrying the daugh- ters of men. If the sons of God were merely the righteous offspring of Seth and the daughters of men were the female descendants of Cain, then why were the children of these unions giants and mighty men? How do we explain the offspring of these unfortunate but human marriages? Well, I believe it’s a simple law of genetics in play called “genetic vitality.” First, giants have always been around. For example, take Robert Wadlow, born in Alton, Illinois, in 1918. At birth he weighed a normal eight pounds, six ounces. At six months, he weighed 30 pounds. A year lat- er, at 18 months, he weighed 62 pounds. He wasn’t fat; he was tall. He continued to grow at an astounding rate, reaching 6 feet, 2 inch- es and 195 pounds by the time he was eight. When he was 13, he became the world’s tall- est Boy Scout. At 13, he was 7 feet, 4 inches tall. Eventually, Robert reached a height of nearly 9 feet! (In comparison, Goliath was about 9 feet, 6 inches.) Robert’s height ac- tually qualified him as the tallest person in modern history. 26 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted: But this oversize fame wasn’t always easy for him. His clothing required three times the normal amount of cloth, and his size 37 shoes cost thousands of dollars a pair—and that was back during the Great Depression. When Robert turned 20, the International Shoe Company provided his shoes for free and hired him to promote the company. That’s all he did for an income. He visited more than 800 towns in 41 states and trav- eled 300,000 miles on his goodwill tour. The shoe company had to modify a car so he could get in, removing the front seat so he could sit in the back and stretch out his long legs. Even though he was of enormous size, he was very good natured, intelligent, and gen- tle. People were always giving him shocked stares. They would ask him, “Does it bother you when everyone stares at you?” He would reply, “Oh, I just look above it all.” He tried to maintain a normal life, enjoying stamp collecting and photography. He’d even take pictures of people taking pictures of him. Robert was a modern-day giant, with no need of fallen angels nor aliens to produce Who Are the Sons of God? 27 him or explain his existence. The giant off- spring of the sons of God and daughters of men likely resulted from genetic vitality. When a people group is isolated for years and only intermarry with one another, like some Pacific Islanders do, the gene pool be- comes restricted and more prone to birth defects and genetic abnormalities. After several generations of this kind of isolation, when they finally marry outside their island or tribe, the children of those unions tend to be more healthy, robust, and, yes, even big- ger. The biggest cats in the world are ligers, a hybrid between tigers and lions. Adoption Choices Not everyone who thinks he or she is a son or daughter of God really is. The Pharisees, the religious leaders of the day, boasted to Jesus that they were the chil- dren of Abraham. Jesus corrected them. “If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham” (John 8:39). You might not get a real sense of how scandalous this statement was for Jesus to say when you read it at first—but it so publicly embarrassed the 28 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted: Pharisees that they eagerly began seeking His death. But Jesus didn’t stop there … Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceed- ed forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do (John 8:42–44). This is a simple principle to test our true heritage. Which “father” do we follow in our actions? The Pharisees were leaders in the church, yet that did not give them security. Just being a member of a synagogue or just being Jewish did not make them children of God. Today, just by being on the books in your church does not make you a son or a daughter of God. Instead, we are the children of the one whom we obey. Whose desires we do, that is our father, whether of righteous- ness or of sin (Romans 6:16). That’s pretty serious. So whose child are you? Are you a child of God? Who Are the Sons of God? 29 When we are born again and are adopted into the family of God, we will want to imitate our heavenly Father. “He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked” (1 John 2:6 NKJV). If you are not a son or daughter of God now, the wonderful news is that you can choose a new family. By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing plea- sures of sin, esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward (Hebrews 11:24–26 NKJV). When called by God, Moses traded in his Egyptian adoption for a heavenly one. Through Jesus, you can too. When the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to 30 Aliens, Angels, or Adopted: redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adop- tion as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ (Galatians 4:4–7 NKJV). Jaycee Lee Dugard was 11 years old when she was kidnapped at a bus stop on June 10, 1991, by Phillip Garrido and his wife Nancy. She was kept in a soundproof shack that was isolated from public view. Cruelly held as a slave, she also fathered children for the Garridos for 18 years. After a while, this circumstance became normal for her. It be- came ordinary. She had come to believe that she was part of the Garrido family, but she later found out what kind of fiends Phillip and Nancy really were. Fortunately, she was eventually discovered and delivered from that terrible condition and was reintroduced to her real family. Talk about a total change of a life! Who Are the Sons of God? 31 Similarly, the devil has kidnapped a lot of people in this world who should be children of God. He’s taken them and abused them, and he has manipulated them into thinking they are with their true family. They are con- vinced that the lies of the devil are the truth, that he is their friend. Phillip Garrido made that claim over Jaycee. Perhaps even you have gotten so used to the devil, you think you are part of his family. You have become comfort- able having him around. But he’s a kidnapper, an abuser. You’ve got to wake up and hear Jesus saying that you can be free. Phillip Garrido was sentenced to 431 years in prison. His wife was sentenced to 36 years. Jaycee received a $20 million settlement from the state, plus a big book deal. She’ll probably be okay financially if she manages her money well for the rest of her life. What a change of fortune from living in a hovel in some per- vert’s backyard—to being liberated, finding your real family, living a clean life, living a normal life, and suddenly going from poverty to riches. What a radical transformation! That’s what the Lord wants to do for us. Right now, you can choose to be a child of the King, an heir of eternal life, and become a son or daughter of God in whom He is well pleased! Just ask Him.

  • Isaiah 4:1 — Historical Context, Theological Meaning, and Correct Application

A Biblical Response to the Misuse of This Verse in Support of Polygamy
    By Pastor Robert Mahlaule

    1. Introduction

Isaiah 4:1 is one of the most frequently misused verses in certain African contexts, especially by those attempting to justify polygamy as God’s will for the church. The verse reads:

And seven women shall take hold of one man in that day, saying, ‘We will eat our own bread and wear our own apparel; only let us be called by your name, to take away our reproach.’” “
    (Isaiah 4:1, NKJV)

Some polygamists claim this verse is a prophetic endorsement of a future era where men will be scarce and women will beg to be added as wives. They argue that this validates polygamy as a divine solution.

This interpretation is not only incorrect—it is the opposite of what the text teaches.

To understand Isaiah 4:1 correctly, we must place it within its historical, literary, and theological context. When we do, the meaning becomes unmistakably clear: Isaiah 4:1 is a picture of judgment, not a model for marriage. It describes the consequences of sin, not the design of God.

This article will walk through the context, meaning, and proper application of Isaiah 4:1, and then address the misuse of this verse in contemporary African settings.

    2. Historical Background: Judah in Crisis

Isaiah prophesied during a time of deep moral decay in Judah. Chapters 1–5 form a courtroom scene where God lays out His charges against His people:

    - Idolatry
    - Corruption in leadership
    - Oppression of the poor
    - Sexual immorality
    - Pride and rebellion

Because of this rebellion, God warned that judgment was coming through war and foreign invasion.

2.1 The Coming War and the Loss of Men

In Isaiah 3, the prophet describes the coming devastation:

    - Men would die in battle (Isaiah 3:25)
    - The nation would be left without male leadership (Isaiah 3:1–4)
    - Women would mourn the loss of husbands, fathers, and sons (Isaiah 3:26)

This is the immediate context of Isaiah 4:1.

The verse is not about marriage—it is about the demographic collapse caused by war. When the men of Judah died in battle, the ratio of women to men would become drastically unbalanced.

2.2 Shame and Reproach in Ancient Israel

In ancient Israel, a woman’s “reproach” was often connected to:

    - Childlessness
    - Unmarried status
    - Social vulnerability

This was not because God devalued women, but because the ancient world lacked the social structures that protect women today. Marriage provided economic security and social covering.

Thus, Isaiah 4:1 describes a desperate situation where women, left without husbands due to war, would beg to be associated with a man simply to remove the shame of being unmarried.

    This is judgment, not blessing.

    3. Literary Context: Isaiah 3–4 as a Unit

Isaiah 4:1 is the final sentence of a long prophetic warning that begins in chapter 3. The chapter divisions were added centuries later; originally, Isaiah 3:16–4:1 was one continuous prophecy.

3.1 The Flow of the Passage

    - Isaiah 3:16–24: Judgment on the proud women of Zion
    - Isaiah 3:25–26: Men die in war; the city mourns
    - Isaiah 4:1: Seven women cling to one man out of desperation

The verse is the climax of a judgment oracle.

3.2 The Contrast With Isaiah 4:2–6

Immediately after this verse, Isaiah shifts to a message of hope:

    - The Branch of the Lord will come
    - God will cleanse His people
    - God will restore His presence

This contrast shows that Isaiah 4:1 is the low point of judgment, not a prescription for marriage.

    4. The Meaning of Isaiah 4:1

4.1 A Picture of National Humiliation

    The verse describes:

    - Desperation
    - Social collapse
    - The consequences of sin
    - The breakdown of family structures

Women offering to provide their own food and clothing was unheard of in ancient Israel. It shows how desperate they would be.

    4.2 Not a Marriage Covenant

    Biblical marriage involves:

    - Mutual commitment
    - Provision
    - Covenant responsibility
    - God’s blessing

    Isaiah 4:1 involves:

    - No covenant
    - No provision
    - No blessing
    - No divine approval

It is a survival strategy, not a marriage model.

4.3 Not a Command, Not a Prophecy for the Church

Isaiah 4:1 is descriptive, not prescriptive. It describes what would happen because of judgment—not what God wants to happen.

    5. Why Polygamists Misuse This Verse

In many African contexts, polygamy is cultural, not biblical. When culture is challenged by Scripture, some attempt to twist Scripture to defend culture.

    5.1 Common Misinterpretations

    1. “Seven women will marry one man in the last days.”
    — False. The verse is about ancient Judah, not the end times.

    2. “This shows God approves polygamy.”
    — False. The verse shows God’s judgment, not His approval.

    3. “Women will beg to be second or third wives.”
    — False. The verse describes shame and desperation, not God’s design.

5.2 The Danger of Using Judgment Texts as Blessing Texts

Using Isaiah 4:1 to justify polygamy is like using:

    - The flood to justify swimming
    - Sodom to justify hospitality
    - The exile to justify travel

It is a complete reversal of the text’s meaning.

    6. The Biblical View of Marriage

    6.1 God’s Original Design

    From the beginning:

“A man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”
    (Genesis 2:24)

Not “the three,” not “the seven”—the two.

    Jesus reaffirmed this:

“From the beginning it was not so.”
    (Matthew 19:8)

6.2 Polygamy in the Old Testament Was Never God’s Ideal

The Bible records polygamy, but never endorses it. Every polygamous household in Scripture is marked by:

    - Jealousy
    - Conflict
    - Division
    - Pain

Abraham, Jacob, David, Solomon—all suffered because of polygamy.

    6.3 The New Covenant Standard

    The New Testament consistently teaches:

    - One husband, one wife (1 Timothy 3:2; Titus 1:6)
    - Husbands love your wives (Ephesians 5:25)
    - Wives respect your husbands (Ephesians 5:33)

Polygamy cannot fulfill the New Testament model of Christ and the Church.

    7. Correct Application of Isaiah 4:1 Today

    7.1 A Warning Against Sin

Isaiah 4:1 warns us that sin destroys:

    - Families
    - Communities
    - Nations

When a society rejects God, even its social structures collapse.

    7.2 A Call to Repentance

    The verse calls us to:

    - Return to God
    - Reject pride
    - Restore righteousness
    - Uphold God’s design for marriage

    7.3 A Reminder of God’s Mercy

After judgment comes hope. Isaiah 4:2–6 promises restoration through the Messiah. The answer to brokenness is not polygamy—it is Christ.

    8. Conclusion

Isaiah 4:1 is not a prophecy endorsing polygamy. It is a picture of national judgment, social collapse, and human desperation caused by sin. To use this verse to justify polygamy is to twist Scripture and mislead God’s people.

The true biblical teaching is clear:

    - God designed marriage as one man and one woman.
    - Polygamy is a human distortion, not a divine plan.
    - Isaiah 4:1 warns us of the consequences of rebellion, not the blessings of obedience.

The church must stand firmly on Scripture, not cultural pressure. And as leaders, we must protect the flock from false interpretations that undermine God’s design.

  • When a Bigamist Comes to Christ: A Pastoral Response in the African Context

    By Pastor Robert Mahlaule

    The African Reality
Bigamy and polygamy remain widespread across Africa, often defended as cultural heritage. Some even dismiss monogamy as a “Western import” into Christianity. Yet the gospel is not bound by culture—it calls all people to God’s original design for marriage while extending grace to those who come from complex family situations.

    Salvation First
When a bigamist approaches the pastor after hearing the gospel, the first response must be clear: salvation is open to all.
    - Jesus does not demand that a man divorce one wife before receiving Him.
    - The cross welcomes sinners as they are, not as they should be.
    - Repentance begins at the heart, not at the marriage register.

    > “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

    God’s Design for Marriage
    - Genesis 2:24 sets the foundation: one man, one woman, one flesh.
    - Jesus reaffirmed monogamy in Matthew 19:4–6, pointing back to creation.
    - Church leadership requires monogamy: “the husband of one wife” (1 Timothy 3:2).

Thus, while salvation is immediate, discipleship must gently guide the new believer toward God’s ideal.

    What About Divorce?
    - Divorce is not God’s desire (Malachi 2:16).
    - Jesus permitted it only in cases of sexual immorality (Matthew 19:9).
    - Paul added desertion by an unbelieving spouse (1 Corinthians 7:15).

Commanding divorce in polygamous families often leaves wives and children destitute. Pastors must avoid creating new wounds while healing old ones.

    Pastoral Pathway
    1. Welcome him into Christ without conditions.
    2. Teach biblical monogamy as God’s standard.
    3. Disciple patiently—help him honour his responsibilities to both wives and children.
    4. Clarify leadership boundaries—he may not qualify for eldership or deaconship while in polygamy.
    5. Model compassion and truth—never compromise doctrine, but never crush families either.

    A Word to African Preachers
Monogamy is not a “white man’s custom.” It is God’s creation order, affirmed by Christ Himself. Our task is to contextualise biblical truth without diluting it. We must show that the gospel honors African families while calling them to God’s higher design.

    Conclusion
When a bigamist comes to Christ, the pastor’s role is not to demand instant divorce but to shepherd him into salvation, discipleship, and responsibility. The gospel is both gracious and transformative—welcoming sinners while reshaping lives according to God’s Word.

Clarify leadership boundaries—he may not qualify for eldership or deaconship while in polygamy. 5. Model compassion and truth—never compromise doctrine, but never crush families either. A Word to African Preachers Monogamy is not a “white man’s custom.” It is God’s creation order, affirmed by Christ Himself. Our task is to contextualise biblical truth without diluting it. We must show that the gospel honors African families while calling them to God’s higher design. Conclusion When a bigamist comes to Christ, the pastor’s role is not to demand instant divorce but to shepherd him into salvation, discipleship, and responsibility. The gospel is both gracious and transformative—welcoming sinners while reshaping lives according to God’s Word.

    A Home in Trouble.

    Genesis 37:1-11
And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him. Genesis 37:4. CC 72.1
The sin of Jacob, and the train of events to which it led, had not failed to exert an influence for evil—an influence that revealed its bitter fruit in the character and life of his sons. As these sons arrived at manhood they developed serious faults. The results of polygamy were manifest in the household. This terrible evil tends to dry up the very springs of love, and its influence weakens the most sacred ties. The jealousy of the several mothers had embittered the family relation, the children had grown up contentious and impatient of control, and the father’s life was darkened with anxiety and grief. CC 72.2
There was one, however, of a widely different character—the elder son of Rachel, Joseph, whose rare personal beauty seemed but to reflect an inward beauty of mind and heart. Pure, active, and joyous, the lad gave evidence also of moral earnestness and firmness. He listened to his father’s instructions, and loved to obey God.... His mother being dead, his affections clung the more closely to the father, and Jacob’s heart was bound up in this child of his old age. He “loved Joseph more than all his children.” CC 72.3
But even this affection was to become a cause of trouble and sorrow. Jacob unwisely manifested his preference for Joseph, and this excited the jealousy of his other sons.... The father’s injudicious gift to Joseph of a costly coat, or tunic, ... excited a suspicion that he intended to pass by his elder children, to bestow the birthright upon the son of Rachel. Their malice was still further increased as the boy one day told them of a dream that he had had.... CC 72.4
As the lad stood before his brothers, his beautiful countenance lighted up with the Spirit of Inspiration, they could not withhold their admiration; but they did not choose to renounce their evil ways, and they hated the purity that reproved their sins. The same spirit that actuated Cain was kindling in their hearts.9 CC 72.5

Why is Infidelity Such a Bad Idea?

    February 24th, 2026

    Infidelity

Jealousy arouses a husband’s fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge. Proverbs 6:34

Infidelity is not new, but we are treating it more casually than any previous generation in recent history. The reality, however, is that its consequences are not lessened by our more liberal outlook on life. In most cases, infidelity is the crowning blow to a marriage that may have already been on the rocks.

Psychology Today says, “More people say they have cheated on their marriage partners than on their tax returns or expense accounts.”

Why can’t people just forgive and forget? The answer, simply put, is that we aren’t put together psychologically in such a way that you can throw an emotional switch and everything clears the screen of your memory and feelings. Jealousy, resentment, feelings of betrayal and breach of trust: they all make it difficult to just move on with life. Long ago the writer of Proverbs observed that “jealousy arouses a husband’s fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge” (Proverbs 6:34).

When the birth control pill was invented, thus separating sex from procreation for millions of people, a cultural revolution began which lowered the bar and the restraints which had governed society for centuries. But when men and women who consider themselves to be liberated and free from these traditional restraints realize that a husband or a wife is in someone else’s arms, jealousy and resentment rages just as it did centuries ago, and marriages become casualties of this misaligned sophistry.

Why did God place a premium on fidelity in marriage? Because He made us, and He knew how deep our emotional needs are and how they only can be met in marriage, and that is through a monogamous relationship. Remember God’s plan was, “For this reason a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and they become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24), a formula which Jesus repeated.

“Wait a minute,” you may be saying, “didn’t Solomon have 700 wives and 300 concubines? And didn’t even David have several wives?” Yes, it’s true. But a study of scripture shows that from Abraham’s time to the Babylonian captivity, pagan practices involving polygamy influenced God’s people but were never part of His plan or purpose.

From the Babylonian captivity in 586 B.C. on through the entire New Testament, there are no statements or examples which would justify either polygamy or infidelity. To the contrary, leaders in the church were to be husbands of one wife, and the context means, “married to just one person.”

“But it’s just the way men are made,” I’ve been told. Before you buy into that mentality, read Psalm 51, written by David, a man who has been there and faced the consequences.

If there were no God, no Ten Commandments with the injunction, “You shall not commit adultery,” no heaven or hell, and no accountability to God, you would still discover that if you want to make your marriage to work, you had better be faithful to the one to whom you committed yourself in marriage Because nothing less than that will work.

Don’t buy into the myth that affairs can actually make your marriage stronger. That’s like believing that gargling with hydrochloric acid will take away your sore throat, or shooting yourself in the foot with a .45 is the best way to deal with an itch on your toe.

Well did the writer of Scripture put it: “Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned? Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched? So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished” (Proverbs 6:27-29).
