    Abiding Joy

    Written By Janice Caldwell-Boucher
    I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.
    John 15:11 NIV
    A flash of color dances before your eyes. Delicate wings rest precariously on a dazzling bloom. A beautiful butterfly appears momentarily before it flits and flutters off.

    You arrive home after a grueling day of work pressures and traffic snarls while your mind is preoccupied with relationship struggles, financial strains, and health uncertainties. But greeting you at your front door is your faithful four-footed friend tail-a-wagging and suddenly some of life’s burdens seem easier to bear.

    A bouquet of exquisite red roses adores your table. For a few short days, they are a fragrant focal point and a splash of color against the backdrop of your drab dining room. Savoring the moment, both the gift and the giver put a smile on your face.

    Your backyard was a showcase of meticulously manicured gardens and flowerbeds overflowing with a rainbow of colorful blossoms. Until a fierce storm blew through and what was once magazine worthy has been reduced to broken branches, scattered petals and endless debris. The only thing still standing upright – unharmed by the ravages of the storm – is a stalwart, sturdy oak tree.

    Happiness is a butterfly and a bouquet of flowers. Joy is a loyal lab and a solid tree. What makes your pet different from a butterfly? Your pet has made its home with you, day in, day out; a butterfly visits your garden when the conditions are right. What makes an oak tree different from fresh cut flowers? The tree has put down deep roots to weather storms; cut flowers fade fast. The staying power of a dog and a tree can be summed up in one word - abiding.

    I have often confused happiness with joy, but they were never meant to be synonyms. What is the difference between the two? – abiding. Happiness is an emotion dependent on happenings. True joy, a fruit of the Spirit, puts down roots and makes its home with you.

    In speaking to his followers, Jesus referenced joy in John 15 with the vine and the branches analogy. He is the vine; we are the branches, and the only branches that produce fruit like joy are those that adhere to the vine. He termed this attaching to the vine as abiding. By making our home with God and putting down our roots in him we can grow the fruit of joy.

    Who doesn’t enjoy it when blissful moments add color to our lives – a warm hug, a favorite dessert, a funny joke, a goal accomplished, an event celebrated? Those fleeting pleasant occasions sprinkle and season our life. But better still to develop that deep abiding joy that grows from intimacy with God especially in times of trials and testing. Happiness is circumstantial and temporal: joy is organic and eternal. Choose joy – abiding joy.

    Dear Jesus, help me to cling to you, the vine. As I draw nourishment from you, help me to produce lasting fruit through your Spirit, such as love, joy and peace. Grow in me your abiding joy for all the seasons of life I walk through.

    Throughout this Day: Contrast times in your life when you felt a rush of emotional happiness and times when you experienced the depths and endurance of the fruit of spiritual joy that helped carry you through some rough patches.

  • The Inner Man – The Hidden Life That Shapes Your Destiny

    Many people spend their lives beautifying, feeding, and strengthening the outer man—the body, the image, the reputation.

    But God’s primary concern is the inner man—your spirit, heart, mind, and conscience.

    The inner man is the real you. It is the control center of your thoughts, decisions, attitude, faith, and destiny.

    When the inner man is weak, life becomes a struggle. When the inner man is strong, nothing can stop your progress.

    Ephesians 3:16 – “That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man.”

    2 Corinthians 4:16 – “Though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.”

    Proverbs 4:23 – “Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

    1. What Is the Inner Man?

    The inner man refers to the spiritual and emotional part of a person:

    * Your heart (Proverbs 4:23)

    * Your spirit (Ephesians 3:16)

    *Your mind and will (Romans 7:22)

    It is the place where:

    * Faith lives

    * Convictions are formed

    * Decisions are made

    * God speaks

    People can lie with their words, but never with their inner man. God sees what is inside.

    1 Samuel 16:7 – “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

    2. The Condition of Your Inner Man Determines the Quality of Your Life.

    What is happening inside you will eventually manifest outside you.

    A bitter heart produces a bitter life

    A fearful heart produces a limited life

    A faith-filled heart produces a victorious life

    Jesus said:

    Luke 6:45 – “Out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.”

    If your inner man is full of fear, doubt, anger, pride, lust, or confusion, it will shape your choices, relationships, and future.

    3. Why the Inner Man Must Be Strengthened

    Paul prayed that believers would be “strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man” (Ephesians 3:16). Why?

    Because:

    - The enemy attacks from WITHIN (thoughts, emotions, temptations)

    - Trials test your heart before they touch your body

    - Stress, disappointment, and delay weaken the inner man

    * A weak inner man leads to:

    Easy discouragement

    Spiritual dryness

    Giving up in trials

    Falling into sin easily

    * But a strong inner man leads to:

    Peace in storms

    Endurance in hardship

    Boldness in faith

    Resistance to temptation

    Proverbs 18:14 – “The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness…”

    4. How Is the Inner Man Strengthened?

    a) By the Word of God
    God’s Word feeds your spirit:

    Jeremiah 15:16 – “Thy words were found, and I did eat them…”

    A starved inner man is a weak inner man. Daily Scripture strengthens you.

    b) By Prayer
    Prayer builds spiritual capacity:

    Jude 1:20 – “Building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.”

    Prayer is like spiritual exercise.

    c) By Worship
    Worship shifts focus from self to God and refreshes the soul.

    Psalm 34:1 – “I will bless the Lord at all times…”

    d) By Obedience
    Every act of obedience deposits strength inside you.

    John 14:21 – “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them… I will manifest myself to him.”

    e) By Guarding Your Heart
    Avoid poison for your inner man:

    Negative environments

    Evil communication (1 Corinthians 15:33)

    Constant sin

    Toxic media

    5. Enemies of the Inner Man

    Unforgiveness – hardens the heart

    Fear & Anxiety – paralyzes the spirit

    Pride – blocks God’s grace

    Hidden Sin – weakens spiritual power

    Doubt & unbelief – starves faith

    Hebrews 12:15 – “Looking diligently lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you…”

    6. Signs of a Healthy Inner Man

    Peace even in chaos

    Hunger for God’s presence

    Love for people

    Joy without reason

    Strength in weakness

    Deep trust in God

    Galatians 5:22-23 – The fruit of the Spirit is the evidence of a healthy inner man.

    Conclusion

    Your life will never rise above the level of your inner man.

    People see your clothes, your job, your smile — but God sees your heart.

    Today, God is calling you to stop decorating the outside and start cultivating the inside.

    Matthew 23:26 – “Clean first that which is within the cup… that the outside may be clean also.”

    Strengthen your inner man, and your outer world will change.

    Prayer
    Lord, strengthen me with might in my inner man by Your Spirit.

    Remove every weakness, heal every wound, uproot every bitterness, and fill me with Your power.

    Make me strong within so I can stand without. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
