Stuck by the Pool of Bethesda but Attracted Divine Attention The Pool of Bethesda was a place of waiting—crowded with the sick, the weak, and the disappointed. It symbolized delayed hope and recurring frustration. Among the multitude lay a man who had been incapacitated for thirty-eight years—stuck, overlooked, and resigned to his condition. Yet, in the midst of his stagnation, he attracted divine attention. This sermon reveals that no matter how long one has been stuck, Jesus still sees, still comes, and still restores. John 5:1–9 (Focus verse: John 5:5–6) “When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been in that condition a long time, He said to him, ‘Do you want to be made well?’” (John 5:6, NKJV) 1. You Can Be Surrounded by Hope and Still Be Stuck “In these lay a great multitude of sick people…” (John 5:3) The man was in the right place but remained in the wrong condition. Proximity to spiritual activity does not guarantee transformation. One can attend church, hear sermons, and witness testimonies, yet remain bound if faith and obedience are absent (James 1:22). -- Do not confuse spiritual exposure with spiritual experience. 2. Long-Term Affliction Does Not Cancel Divine Compassion “A certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years.” (John 5:5) Thirty-eight years suggest prolonged disappointment. Yet Jesus knew the length of his suffering and still stopped for him. Time does not weaken God’s power or diminish His concern (Psalm 34:19). -- Your delay is not a denial. God is aware of how long you have waited. 3. Jesus Seeks the Stuck and Overlooked “When Jesus saw him lying there…” (John 5:6) While others rushed toward the water, Jesus moved toward the man. Divine attention is not attracted by strength but by need (Isaiah 57:15). -- When people overlook you, God is often positioning Himself to reveal His glory in your life. 4. A Question That Confronts the Will “Do you want to be made well?” (John 5:6) This question confronts comfort in captivity. Sometimes people grow accustomed to their condition and fear responsibility after healing. Jesus addresses desire before delivering power (Mark 10:51). -- Healing begins when desire aligns with faith. 5. Excuses Do Not Stop Jesus, but Obedience Releases Power “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” (John 5:8) The man offered excuses—no helper, others stepping ahead—but Jesus bypassed the excuses and issued a command. Healing followed obedience, not explanation (Luke 17:14). -- Stop explaining your limitations and start obeying God’s instructions. 6. Grace Can Heal Without the Pool The man was healed without entering the water. Jesus Himself became the source of healing. This demonstrates that systems may fail, but Christ never does (Hebrews 13:8). -- Your breakthrough is not tied to a place, person, or process—Jesus is sufficient. Practical Takeaways ** Being stuck is not the end of your story. ** Divine attention can locate you in the crowd. ** Jesus heals beyond systems, seasons, and support. ** Obedience activates miracles.
