Daily Devotion — April 20 | Mark 4:32 (NKJV)
God Grows What We Plant
Mark chapter 4 contains the parable of the mustard seed, where Jesus illustrates the growth of the kingdom of God. The mustard seed was known as one of the smallest seeds planted in gardens during that time. Yet once it began to grow, it became a large plant with branches strong enough to provide shelter.
Jesus uses this simple example to teach a powerful truth about how God works. The kingdom of God often begins in ways that appear small or insignificant. A simple act of faith, a quiet prayer, a word of encouragement, or a seed of truth planted in someone’s heart may seem minor in the moment. Yet God can
take those small beginnings and produce results far beyond what we imagine.
The growth of the mustard seed reminds believers that God is responsible for the increase. Our role is to plant the seed faithfully through obedience and trust. Over time, God develops that seed into something strong, fruitful, and beneficial to others.
The image of birds nesting in its branches also shows that the growth of God’s kingdom provides blessing and refuge to many people. What begins small can eventually impact lives far beyond the original moment of faith.
For believers today this verse encourages us not to underestimate small beginnings. God often starts His greatest works through small acts of faith that grow over time under His care.
Reflection Questions
1. Are there small steps of faith in my life that I may be overlooking
2. How might God be using simple acts of obedience to produce greater impact
3. Am I trusting God to grow what I faithfully plant
Prayer
Lord God thank You that You work through small beginnings. Help me to remain faithful in planting seeds of faith, truth, and kindness. Teach me to trust Your power to grow what I place in Your hands. In Jesus name Amen.
