  • Daily Devotion — June 16 | Acts 2:4 (NKJV)

    Empowered by God's Presence

Acts 2:4 records the remarkable fulfillment of Jesus' promise concerning the Holy Spirit. The believers had gathered together in obedience, praying and waiting as the Lord instructed. On the Day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon them in a powerful way, filling them and enabling them to speak in languages they had never learned. This miraculous event marked the beginning of a new chapter in God's work through His church.

The disciples had spent years learning from Jesus, yet they needed more than knowledge to fulfill His mission. They needed the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. When the Spirit filled them, fearful followers became bold witnesses. Ordinary men and women were equipped to proclaim the wonderful works of God to people from many nations.

This verse reminds us that God's work is accomplished through God's power. The early believers did not depend on their own abilities, talents, or strength. They relied on the Holy Spirit to guide, empower, and equip them for service. The same principle remains true today. While the circumstances of Pentecost were unique, every believer needs the ongoing help, strength, and guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Being filled with the Spirit involves yielding our hearts to God's control and allowing Him to direct our thoughts, words, and actions. As we walk closely with the Lord, He produces His character in us and gives us the courage to live for Christ in a world that desperately needs the gospel.

When we feel weak, inadequate, or uncertain, we can remember that God has not left us to serve Him alone. His Spirit is present to strengthen, guide, and empower us for every task He calls us to fulfill.

    Reflection Questions

    1. Am I relying on the Holy Spirit or on my own strength to live the Christian life?

    2. In what areas of my life do I need God's power and guidance today?

    3. How can I be more sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit?

    Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Help me to depend on Your power rather than my own abilities. Fill my heart with a desire to follow Your leading and to live in a way that honors You. Give me courage to serve You faithfully and to share the love of Christ with others. In Jesus name Amen.

    Practical Application

    ● Begin each day by asking the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts and actions.

    ● Spend time reading God's Word and listening for His direction.

    ● Trust God's strength when facing challenges instead of relying solely on your own abilities.

    Takeaway Thought

God's Spirit empowers ordinary believers to accomplish extraordinary things for His glory.

  • Saint of the Day — 16 June
    Saint John Francis Regis
The Priest Who Went Where No One Else Would Go

    He did not wait
for the poor to come to him.

    He went to them.

    Saint John Francis Regis
    was a Jesuit priest
born in France in 1597 —

    a man of learning
who chose to spend his life
    among the forgotten.

He walked to the most remote
    mountain villages in France,
    often in brutal winter conditions,
    to bring the Gospel
to people who had not seen a priest
    in years.

    Sometimes decades.

    He travelled on foot
    through snow and ice
    in the French Alps —

    arriving in isolated villages
    where faith had grown cold
    and communities had collapsed
    from poverty and neglect.

    He did not arrive with
    grand theological lectures.

    He arrived with food
    for the hungry.

    Firewood for the freezing.

    Legal help for those
    imprisoned unjustly.

    A path out of prostitution
for women who had no other choice.

    He reconciled families.
    He established schools.
    He set up centres
    to help women
    rebuild their lives with dignity.

    He preached with such warmth
    and conviction
    that hardened hearts opened.

    Communities that had forgotten God
    remembered Him.

    And here is the part
    that stays with me:

Regis did not do any of this
    from a position of comfort.

    He slept in barns.
    He walked through blizzards.
He was refused entry by parishes
who thought he was too disruptive.

    He died in 1640
at just forty-three years old —

    worn out from a life
    poured out completely
    for others.

    When he died,
    crowds came from the mountains
    to mourn him.

The people he had served —
    the forgotten ones —
    they remembered.

    He was canonised in 1737.

And today's Gospel fits him perfectly:

Jesus says to love your enemies —
to go to the difficult people,
    the difficult places,
    the difficult conversations.

    Regis did not love
only those who made it easy.

    He loved most
    where it cost most.

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
    because He has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor."
    — Luke 4:18

    "Whatever you did
    for one of the least
of these brothers and sisters of mine,
    you did for me."
    — Matthew 25:40

    Prayer

    Saint John Francis Regis,
you went where others refused to go
and loved those others refused to love.

    Pray for us —

    that we may have
    the same reckless generosity.

    That we may stop waiting
for those in need to come to us,
    and begin instead
    to go to them.

    Amen.

    Truth for Today

    The Gospel is not comfortable.

    And neither was the life
of the one who gave it to us.

    Reflection

Is there someone difficult in your life —
someone you have been avoiding —
that God might be calling you
    to reach out to?

Comment "St. John Francis, pray for us"
    or "Amen"
