"Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting." — Matthew 17:21 (KJV)

"Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am." — Isaiah 58:6-9 (KJV)

"Yea, while I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding." — Daniel 9:21-22 (KJV)

"Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish." — Esther 4:16 (KJV)

    INTRODUCTION

"There are matters in life and destiny that cannot be handled except by the instrumentality of fasting and prayers. It is not because God isn't powerful enough—it is because we don't know our place of responsibility in God's agenda for our lives!"

Beloved, Jesus Christ spoke plainly: "Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting" (Matthew 17:21). There are mountains that will not move by mere confession. There are demons that will not flee by mere authority. There are destinies that will not unlock by mere positive thinking. There are dimensions of kingdom wealth that can only be accessed through the discipline of fasting and prayer!

The Prophet Isaiah took time to deal with the heavier matters of the law—far greater and heavier than religious cultures and customs of piety often demonstrated by the Israeli religious elites. He said it is better to dish out your bread to the hungry, break the bonds of the wicked, clothe the naked, undo the heavy burden, than to shave the head, put on sackcloth, and sit on ashes to put on a show of fasting and prayers (Isaiah 58:6-9). True fasting is not a performance—it is a weapon!

Fasting and prayers are one undisputable, undeniable, indispensable, and inevitable principle of kingdom wealth. There are folks with mandates unfulfilled, prayers unanswered, destinies unactualized, and missions unaccomplished simply because they won't just fast and pray! It isn't because God isn't capable—it is because they don't know their place of responsibility in God's agenda for their lives. God assured that anyone who seeks Him wholeheartedly, intimately, earnestly, and experientially will find Him (Jeremiah 29:11-14).

Let us explore the purpose and power of fasting and prayers! 🏾

THE PURPOSE AND POWER OF FASTING AND PRAYERS

    1. Daniel: Fasting and Prayers That Unlocked Heavenly Blueprints

"And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes." — Daniel 9:3 (KJV)

Daniel understood that the prophetic timeline of Israel required divine intervention. The seventy years spoken by Jeremiah were almost complete, but two years were added (Jeremiah 29:10). So Daniel took upon himself to "die daily," as Paul puts it, in fasting and prayers. He literally fasted and prayed until an angel appeared from heaven with a blueprint for Israel—the calendar and timeline of heaven's dealings with the nation!

The angel Gabriel said: "At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision" (Daniel 9:23). Daniel's fasting and prayers moved heaven to release revelation. Some blueprints are only released to those who fast and pray!

Scriptural Confirmation: "Yea, while I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation" (Daniel 9:21). Heaven responds to fasting and prayers!

    2. Ezra: Fasting and Prayers That Broke Rebellion

"Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance." — Ezra 8:21 (KJV)

Ezra was faced with a stubborn and rebellious generation of Jews returning from captivity. They had been in Babylon for seventy years. Their hearts were hardened, their minds were defiled, and their wills were stubborn. But Ezra proclaimed a fast. He called the people to afflict themselves before God. And by fasting and prayers, he was able to bring the rebellious Jews to their knees!

The Scripture says: "So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us" (Ezra 8:23). God heard their fasting and prayers. The people came broken-hearted. Rebellion was crushed. Revival was born. Fasting and prayers break the hardest hearts!

Scriptural Confirmation: "And the children of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain chief of the fathers, after the house of their fathers, and all of them by their names, were separated, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter" (Ezra 10:16). Fasting and prayers prepare the ground for reformation!

    3. Esther: Fasting and Prayers That Secured Deliverance

"Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day." — Esther 4:16 (KJV)

Esther was a woman who had favour both with God and men. But we never knew her secret of "attraction" to all people until she ordered every Jew to embark on fasting and prayers for their total deliverance and emancipation! She was obviously a woman who lived a fasted life!

Haman had plotted the annihilation of the Jews. The decree was sealed. The gallows were built. There was no human solution. But Esther called a fast. For three days, no food, no water. For three days, no sleep, no comfort. And God intervened! The king could not sleep. The records were read. Haman was hanged on his own gallows. The Jews were saved!

Scriptural Confirmation: "And the king said unto Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the palace... What is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee" (Esther 9:12). Fasting and prayers turned a death sentence into a victory celebration!

    4. The People of Nineveh: Fasting and Prayers That Averted Judgment

"So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them." — Jonah 3:5 (KJV)

Nineveh was a wicked city. God sent Jonah to declare judgment: "Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown" (Jonah 3:4). The people believed God. They proclaimed a fast. They put on sackcloth—from the king to the commoner. Even the animals were made to fast!

The king said: "Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water: But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God" (Jonah 3:7-8). And God saw their works. He repented of the evil He had pronounced. Nineveh was spared! Fasting and prayers avert divine judgment!

Scriptural Confirmation: "And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not" (Jonah 3:10). Fasting and prayers change destinies!

    5. Jesus: Fasting and Prayers That Launched Ministry

"Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred." — Matthew 4:1-2 (KJV)

Before Jesus began His earthly ministry, He fasted for forty days and forty nights. He didn't just pray—He fasted. He didn't just seek God—He denied Himself. He faced the devil in the wilderness and won because He had been prepared through fasting and prayers!

The Scripture says: "And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about" (Luke 4:14). The power of the Spirit came upon Him AFTER the fast. Fasting and prayers are the launching pad for supernatural ministry!

Scriptural Confirmation: "How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him" (Acts 10:38). Fasting and prayers release divine power!

    6. Paul: Fasting and Prayers That Established Churches

"And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed." — Acts 14:23 (KJV)

Paul and Barnabas didn't just plant churches—they fasted and prayed over the leaders they appointed. They understood that spiritual leadership requires spiritual preparation. They didn't rely on talent or charisma. They relied on fasting and prayers!

The Scripture says: "As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them" (Acts 13:2). The Holy Spirit speaks when we fast and pray!

Scriptural Confirmation: "And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away" (Acts 13:3). Fasting and prayers set people apart for destiny!

    7. Cornelius: Fasting and Prayers That Attracted Angelic Visitation

"And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing." — Acts 10:30 (KJV)

Cornelius was a Gentile, a Roman centurion. He wasn't a Jew. He wasn't circumcised. He didn't have the covenant. But he fasted and prayed. And an angel appeared to him! The angel said: "Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God" (Acts 10:4).

Cornelius's fasting and prayers opened the door for the Gospel to reach the Gentiles! Peter was sent to his house. The Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. Fasting and prayers attract divine visitation!

Scriptural Confirmation: "While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word" (Acts 10:44). Fasting and prayers break ethnic and religious barriers!

    FINAL THOUGHTS

Fasting and prayers are not optional—they are indispensable. They are the secret of kingdom wealth, the key to unlocking destinies, and the weapon that breaks every yoke. Daniel fasted and received heavenly blueprints. Ezra fasted and broke rebellion. Esther fasted and secured deliverance. Nineveh fasted and averted judgment. Jesus fasted and launched His ministry in power. Paul fasted and established churches. Cornelius fasted and attracted angelic visitation.

There are mandates unfulfilled, prayers unanswered, destinies unactualized, and missions unaccomplished because we have neglected fasting and prayers. • UNDERSTANDING THE TRAVAIL OF ZION
The Burden of Redemption, the Battle for Destiny, and the Travail of a Nation.

What is the travail of Zion, and why must Zion travail?

In this profound biblical teaching, Evang. David Eyoh examines the origins, history, purpose, and spiritual significance of Zion's travail, tracing its foundations to the Fall of Man and the subsequent corruption, bondage, and groaning of creation.

Drawing from Genesis 3, Genesis 4:26, and Romans 8:18–23, this message explores the spiritual crisis that necessitated God's redemptive intervention and the continuing responsibility of God's people in His divine programme.

THREE MAJOR PURPOSES OF ZION'S TRAVAIL

    1. Spiritual Emancipation and Redemption

Discover the relationship between humanity's bondage to sin, death, and corruption and the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. Through Isaiah 66:7–9, Isaiah 61:1–3, and other biblical passages, this teaching examines the distinction between Zion's travail and ordinary human experiences of travail.

It also explores the biblical passages concerning Christ's proclamation to the spirits in prison and the extraordinary events associated with His death and resurrection.

    Scriptures: Isaiah 66:7–9; Isaiah 61:1–3; 1 Peter 3:19; Psalm 24:7–10; Matthew 27:50–53.

    2. Spiritual Authority and the Fulfilment of Divine Purpose

Why is spiritual travail necessary for fulfilling divine assignments and actualising destiny?

Explore the relationship between divine calling, spiritual empowerment, skill, leadership, and the fulfilment of God's purposes. From Israel's calling as a kingdom of priests to the skilled individuals entrusted with specialised assignments, this teaching considers how divine purpose requires preparation and faithful stewardship.

    Scriptures: Exodus 19:6; Genesis 4:19–22; 1 Kings 5:6; Exodus 31:1–6.

    3. The Travail of Zion in Hostile Environments

What happens when God's people are called to fulfil their divine assignments in hostile environments?

Using biblical references to Ishmael, Kedar, conflict, and the pursuit of peace, this teaching examines the challenges of fulfilling divine purpose amid opposition, insecurity, political hostility, and social instability.

The message also reflects on Nigeria's historical and contemporary challenges, including colonial exploitation, resource extraction, economic dependence, and the urgent responsibility to build a more productive and just society.

Scriptures: Genesis 16:12; Song of Solomon 1:5–6; Psalm 120:5–7; Jeremiah 6:14.

    THE CENTRAL MESSAGE

Zion's travail must be understood within the broader biblical story of redemption, divine purpose, spiritual responsibility, and the struggle to fulfil God's will in a fallen world.

This teaching invites Christians, intercessors, ministers, missionaries, and Christian leaders to examine the spiritual and practical responsibilities associated with their calling and the transformation of their communities and nations.

THREE MAJOR PURPOSES OF ZION'S TRAVAIL 1. Spiritual Emancipation and Redemption Discover the relationship between humanity's bondage to sin, death, and corruption and the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. Scriptures: Isaiah 66:7–9; Isaiah 61:1–3; 1 Peter 3:19; Psalm 24:7–10; Matthew 27:50–53. 2. Spiritual Authority and the Fulfilment of Divine Purpose Why is spiritual travail necessary for fulfilling divine assignments and actualising destiny? Explore the relationship between divine calling, spiritual empowerment, skill, leadership, and the fulfilment of God's purposes. From Israel's calling as a kingdom of priests to the skilled individuals entrusted with specialised assignments, this teaching considers how divine purpose requires preparation and faithful stewardship. Scriptures: Exodus 19:6; Genesis 4:19–22; 1 Kings 5:6; Exodus 31:1–6. 3. The Travail of Zion in Hostile Environments What happens when God's people are called to fulfil their divine assignments in hostile environments? Using biblical references to Ishmael, Kedar, conflict, and the pursuit of peace, this teaching examines the challenges of fulfilling divine purpose amid opposition, insecurity, political hostility, and social instability. The message also reflects on Nigeria's historical and contemporary challenges, including colonial exploitation, resource extraction, economic dependence, and the urgent responsibility to build a more productive and just society. Scriptures: Genesis 16:12; Song of Solomon 1:5–6; Psalm 120:5–7; Jeremiah 6:14. THE CENTRAL MESSAGE Zion's travail must be understood within the broader biblical story of redemption, divine purpose, spiritual responsibility, and the struggle to fulfil God's will in a fallen world. This teaching invites Christians, intercessors, ministers, missionaries, and Christian leaders to examine the spiritual and practical responsibilities associated with their calling and the transformation of their communities and nations. WATCH, REFLECT, AND SHARE. 🔗🖇️📎 https://youtu.be/7iQCmXW5Ky4?si=Ow6QaM0s0RMcqU6Z If this teaching challenges your understanding of spiritual travail, share it with someone who needs a deeper biblical perspective on redemption, divine purpose, intercession, and the responsibility of God's people toward their nation. • St. Thérèse of Lisieux

St. Therese of Lisieux was born on January 2, 1873, in France, to Louis Martin, a jeweler, and Zelie Guerin, a lacemaker. Remarkably, both of her parents had separately hoped for religious vocations of their own before their marriage - her father had considered becoming a monk, and her mother a nun. According to tradition, they initially intended to live as brother and sister even within their marriage, until a priest counseled them that God did not intend marriage to be lived this way; they took his advice and went on to raise a family together.

    Entering Carmel

Therese joined the Carmelite community at Lisieux, Normandy, at just 15 years old, having personally met Pope Leo XIII on November 20, 1887, to request his permission for such an early entry. She became a Carmelite postulant on April 9, 1888.

    "The Little Way"

After nine years in religious life, Therese died of tuberculosis on September 30, 1897. A collection of her letters and autobiographical writings was published the following year under the title 'The Story of a Soul', and its impact proved so profound that she became one of the most widely beloved saints of the twentieth century. She wrote memorably of her own spiritual approach, often called the "Little Way": rejoicing in her own littleness, since it is little children, and those who resemble them, who are welcomed to the heavenly banquet.

Canonization and Doctor of the Church

Therese was beatified on April 29, 1923, and canonized on May 17, 1925, both by Pope Pius XI - only 28 years after her death. Pope John Paul II declared her a Doctor of the Church on October 19, 1997, in the centenary year of her death.

    Patronage

St. Therese of Lisieux is venerated today as the patron saint of aviators, florists, missions, and those suffering from illness, remembered for a life largely hidden from the wider world, whose spiritual depth was revealed only through the writings published after her death.
