Making Room for What God Is Doing
In Mark chapter 2 Jesus is responding to questions about why His disciples do not follow certain traditional religious practices like fasting. The religious leaders were focused on preserving their established systems and traditions. Jesus explains that something new is happening. The kingdom of God is arriving and it cannot simply be squeezed into old patterns of thinking.
Jesus uses the illustration of wine and wineskins. New wine expands as it ferments. Old wineskins have
already been stretched and hardened, so they cannot handle the expansion. If new wine is poured into them, they will burst and both the wine and the container will be lost.
The message is clear. When God brings new life, transformation must follow. The gospel is not meant to be added onto an unchanged life. It reshapes the heart, renews the mind, and creates something new.
Following Christ requires openness to transformation. Old habits, rigid attitudes, and hardened hearts cannot contain the life God wants to produce. The work of Christ brings renewal that affects every part of who we are.
For believers today this verse reminds us that God’s work in our lives is dynamic and growing. We must remain flexible, teachable, and willing to let God reshape our hearts so His new life can flourish within us.
