Powers Are Fleeting
Psalm 62:11 – “God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this: that power belongeth unto God.”
In our world today, many people chase power—political power, financial power, social influence, authority, fame, and human recognition.
But Scripture constantly reminds us of a powerful truth: all earthly power is temporary, unstable, limited, and fleeting.
Only God possesses eternal, unchanging, and sovereign power.
Men rise and fall. Kingdoms grow and collapse. Rich men become poor. Famous people are forgotten.
But God remains the same forever (Malachi 3:6).
1. EARTHLY POWER NEVER LASTS
a. Kings Rise and Fall
Nebuchadnezzar was once the ruler of the greatest empire on earth, yet God reduced him to nothing (Daniel 4:30–33). His power did not last because human power is borrowed and God can withdraw it.
b. Pharaoh Had Power—But Lost It
He oppressed Israel with military strength, but one instruction from God destroyed his army (Exodus 14:27–28).
What looks mighty today can crumble tomorrow.
c. Herod Tried to Display Power
Herod killed James and imprisoned Peter. Yet the same Herod died suddenly and painfully because he exalted himself above God (Acts 12:21–23).
Earthly power is short-lived. God alone holds lasting power.
2. NO HUMAN CAN HOLD POWER FOREVER
a. Power Fails at Death
No matter how powerful a man is, when death comes, everything ends.
Ecclesiastes 8:8 – “No man has power over the day of his death.”
b. Authority Shifts From Person to Person
Today’s leader becomes tomorrow’s ex-leader.
Daniel 2:21 – “He removes kings and sets up kings.”
c. Fame Is Only for a Season
One day the crowd shouts, “Hosanna!”
Another day they shout, “Crucify him!”
(John 12:13; John 19:6)
People celebrate you today and forget you tomorrow.
3. GOD ALONE HAS EVERLASTING POWER
a. He Is Omnipotent
Revelation 19:6 – “The Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”
b. His Power Has No Beginning and No End
Psalm 145:13 – “Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom.”
c. His Power Cannot Be Challenged
Job 42:2 – “I know that You can do all things; no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.”
This is why believers must not rely on human power, positions, riches, or connections but on the power of God.
4. THE DANGER OF TRUSTING IN FLEETING POWER
a. It Creates Pride
Proverbs 16:18 – “Pride goes before destruction.”
People who trust in their power usually fall because they become proud.
b. It Produces a False Sense of Security
Psalm 20:7 – “Some trust in chariots and some in horses…”
But human power cannot save.
c. It Ends in Shame
Every person in Scripture who boasted in power ended in shame—Saul, Goliath, Haman, and Herod.
5. WHAT BELIEVERS SHOULD DO
a. Depend on God Alone
Psalm 62:11 – “…power belongeth unto God.”
b. Use Power Humbly and Faithfully
Whatever authority, position, or influence you have is given by God.
Use it for His glory and the service of others.
c. Seek the Power of the Holy Spirit
Acts 1:8 – “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you…”
The only power that lasts—from earth to eternity—is the power of God.
All earthly power is fleeting.
Only God’s power is eternal.
Therefore, humble yourself, trust God, and use any position you have to honor Him.
PRAYER
“Lord, teach me not to trust in human power. Help me depend on Your everlasting power and use every gift and opportunity You give me for Your glory. Amen.”
