Be Spiritually Discerned and Vigilant.
1 Peter 5:8 (KJV)
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”
We live in a world full of deception, distractions, and spiritual battles.
The enemy’s strategy is subtle—he disguises lies as truth and darkness as light.
To survive and thrive as Christians, we must develop spiritual discernment and remain vigilant in all things.
Discernment helps us to distinguish between good and evil, truth and error, the voice of God and the voice of the enemy. Vigilance keeps us alert, awake, and watchful so the devil cannot take advantage of us.
WHAT IS SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT?
Spiritual discernment is the ability to perceive and judge spiritual realities through the help of the Holy Spirit. It is not just natural wisdom but spiritual insight that comes from God.
Hebrews 5:14
“But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”
Discernment is like spiritual eyesight. Without it, a believer is blind to the enemy’s deception.
WHY YOU MUST BE SPIRITUALLY DISCERNED AND VIGILANT
1. Because the enemy disguises himself
2 Corinthians 11:14
“And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.”
The devil doesn’t always come in the form of darkness—sometimes he appears as something good, moral, or even religious. Discernment helps you detect his disguise.
2. Because false prophets and teachings abound
Matthew 24:24
“For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”
We are in a generation of spiritual deception—social media prophets, counterfeit miracles, and fake doctrines. The spiritually blind will easily be deceived.
3. Because the enemy attacks through subtlety
Genesis 3:1
“Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made.”
The devil didn’t attack Eve with a sword but with words and manipulation. Spiritual discernment protects us from the serpent’s whisper.
4. Because we are in spiritual warfare
Ephesians 6:12
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
Vigilance is your shield. A sleeping Christian is a defeated Christian. You can’t fight what you don’t see.
5. Because Jesus commanded watchfulness
Matthew 26:41
“Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Jesus didn’t only say “pray,” He said, “watch and pray.” Watchfulness guards the gate while prayer keeps the fire burning.
HOW TO DEVELOP SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT AND VIGILANCE
1. Stay rooted in the Word of God
Psalm 119:105 – “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
The Word exposes lies and keeps you grounded in truth.
2. Be filled with the Holy Spirit
*John 16:13* – “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth.”
The Holy Spirit is your teacher and discerner.
3. Live a life of prayer and fasting
*Luke 18:1* – “Men ought always to pray, and not to faint.”
Prayer sharpens your spiritual senses and strengthens your inner man.
4. Avoid spiritual laziness and complacency.
*Romans 13:11* – “It is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.”
Wake up! Time is short. The enemy is active while many believers are asleep.
5. Test every spirit
*1 John 4:1* – “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.”
Not every dream, prophecy, or vision is from God. Test them by the Word.
6. Stay in fellowship with mature believers
*Proverbs 27:17* – “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”
Isolation breeds deception; fellowship brings accountability and wisdom.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF DISCERNMENT & VIGILANCE
* Joseph discerned Pharaoh’s dream and saved a nation (Genesis 41:15–16).
* Daniel discerned the king’s vision through divine revelation (Daniel 2:19–23).
* Pauldiscerned the evil spirit in the girl at Philippi (Acts 16:16–18).
* Jesus discerned the thoughts of men and the traps of the Pharisees (Matthew 9:4, 22:18).
Beloved, spiritual discernment and vigilance are not optional—they are essential for survival in these end times.
We must stay awake, alert, and sensitive to the move of God and the tricks of the enemy.
Don’t let the devil deceive you. Stay close to God, remain watchful, and walk in the Spirit daily.
Ephesians 5:15-16
“See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”
PRAY THIS PRAYER
1. Lord, open my spiritual eyes to discern between truth and deception.
2. Holy Spirit, sharpen my spiritual senses to recognize your voice.
3. I reject every spirit of spiritual blindness in Jesus’ name.
4. Father, make me vigilant in prayer and in the Word.
5. Lord, deliver me from every subtle trap of the enemy.
