    1. Evening Prayer

And whatsoever ye do, do [it] heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; ⏤ Colossians 3:23

God does nothing except in response to believing prayer. ⏤ John Wesley

O God, by the teaching and example of Your dear Son, You have warned us to work Your works while it is day, before the night comes. Give us the spirit of earnestness and diligence so that we may faithfully do the work You’ve given us. Save us from laziness and sloth. Help us to understand the true meaning of life. Enable us by Your grace to do everything with all our might, whatever tasks come our way.

We ask Your forgiveness tonight for where we’ve failed to fulfill our duties. Give us grace and wisdom to use every talent You’ve entrusted to us, so that it may bring blessings and good into the world, and honor and glory to Your name. May we be faithful in every relationship in life. In our home, help us to fulfill our duties so that no part of our home life suffers. Help us to be faithful in all our business, social, church, state, and worldly responsibilities.

We also ask that You teach us how to make all our work Christian work—business for Jesus. Teach us how to do everything for Your glory. Let not our worldly activities steal our hearts away from our heavenly Master. Don’t let us become worldly while we are busy with the things we must do to provide for our bodies. Make all our work a means of grace to us. May we learn to do everything for Jesus. Then we will find a blessing in every task and duty. Grant that in all things we may honor and glorify You, forgetting ourselves. We ask this in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

    2. The Key to Spiritual Maturity.
Solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. (Hebrews 5:14)

Now, this is amazing. Don’t miss it. It could save you years of wasted living.

What this verse is saying is that if you want to become mature and understand and appreciate the more solid teachings of the word, then the rich, nutritional, precious milk of God’s gospel promises must transform your moral senses — your spiritual mind — so that you can discern between good and evil.

Or, let me put it another way. Getting ready to feast on all God’s word is not first an intellectual challenge; it is first a moral challenge. If you want to eat the solid food of the word, you must exercise your spiritual senses so as to develop a mind that discerns between good and evil. This is a moral challenge, not just intellectual.

The startling truth is that, if you stumble over understanding Melchizedek in Genesis and Hebrews, it may be because you watch questionable TV programs. If you stumble over the doctrine of election, it may be because you still use some shady business practices. If you stumble over the God-centered work of Christ on the cross, it may be because you love money and spend too much and give too little.

The pathway to maturity and to solid biblical food is not first becoming an intelligent person, but becoming an obedient person. What you do with alcohol and sex and money and leisure and food and computers, and the way you treat other people, has more to do with your capacity for solid food than where you go to school or what books you read.

This is so important because in our highly technological society we are prone to think that education — especially intellectual education — is the key to maturity. There are many Ph.D.’s who choke in their spiritual immaturity on the things of God. And there are many less-educated saints who are deeply mature and can feed with pleasure and profit on the deepest things of God’s word.

    3. Facing Temptation

They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away
    - Luke 8:13

In Luke 8, Jesus relates the parable of the sower. A man goes out to sow seed on his land. The seed falls on different kinds of ground and so varies in its success.

Interestingly, the seed that falls on stony ground at first springs up and looks productive. However, because it has no real root structure, it withers in the heat of the day.

Jesus, in interpreting the parable for his disciples, observes that the seed stands for the Word of God and the various grounds represent the different ones who hear the Word. The stony-ground audience, he says, receives the Word initially with joy, but then melts in the moment of trial or temptation. In other words, they fall away when real life hits them.

What is the lesson? Jesus says, "Take heed [be careful] therefore how you hear" (18). It is not the seed, but the ground, which needs to change!

How do you receive God's Word? Is it to you just an encouraging story, or a façade you put on for others? Or do you receive it deeply, nourishingly into your soul and let it guide your every decision, emotion, and action?

Enjoying the message is not the same thing, Jesus says, as obeying the message. Those who bear much and lasting fruit are those who hear the Word and keep it and live it out with patient endurance (15).

May you face the trials and temptations of today with a deeply-rooted faith in the Word of God. http://www.baptistbiblehour.org/resources/devotional/facing-temptation-9/

Have Mercy and Compassion on Those in Pain and in Need – (Proverbs 31:6-7)

    Daily Proverbs

Give strong drink to him who is perishing, and wine to those who are bitter of heart. Let him drink and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.
    Daily Bible Study
These two passages are contrasted against the previous passages where God commands rulers and those in leadership roles not to drink strong drink and give themselves over to alcohol. These two passages speak primarily of having mercy and compassion on those in need. And though they specifically mention pain, poverty and impending death in association with alcohol, in a much broader scope they encompass anyone in need. In addition, these verses can be taken in either one of two ways. First is to provide mercy, in this case strong drink for medicinal purposes, to those who have a terminal illness, injury or those facing execution.

Second is in reference to provisions and providing for those who have little or nothing. In this case to invite those who have little or nothing to the king’s banquet. In other words, if they are poor and have no food let them eat with the king at his table. In either case they speak to the heart of all of God’s commandments for believers, which are to love God, love others and do what we can with what we have for those around us. We are called to help others, we are called to help relieve the pain and suffering people are going through, and to do so while they are going through it. We do so in order to ease their pain and suffering and to shine the light and love of Jesus to a lost and dying world.
