  • Women and the Resurrection
"Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?" (John 20:15). This was the first word Jesus spoke after His resurrection from the dead. And the first name uttered by His lips was a woman's name: "Mary."
And the first eyes to behold Jesus' new face, and the first hands to touch the body of the new Adam risen from the dead, were the eyes and hands of a woman: "And as they went to tell His disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, 'Rejoice!' So they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him." (Matthew 28:9).
And so, the dawn of the Resurrection meets the dawn of the first days of creation. There, the woman was hiding from her Creator, shamed by sin. Here, the Saviour comes to meet the redeemed woman, and sends her to convey the Good News. Christ has conquered sin and death. He restored to woman and to all humanity the purity they had lost, which was their portion in the Garden of Eden. And so, death changes its name. Life does not vanish through it, but is transformed. And from that moment, Mary Magdalene (and every woman) can exclaim joyfully and say: "I will not die, neither I nor my body, nor my soul, nor any part of my being."
It is the cry of the Resurrection, proclaimed by woman to all humanity.
