THE STORY BEHIND "I'II PRAISE MY MAKER WHILE I'VE BREATH

“I’ll Praise My Maker While I’ve Breath” is a beloved hymn by the English hymn writer and theologian Isaac Watts (1674–1748). The hymn is based on Psalm 146, transforming the biblical psalm into a personal declaration of lifelong trust, praise and devotion to God.

Watts published the hymn in his influential collection “The Psalms of David, Imitated in the Language of the New Testament” in 1719. Rather than translating the Psalm word-for-word, he expressed its message in a form that worshippers could sing as their own testimony of faith.

The opening words capture the central theme:

“I’ll praise my Maker while I’ve breath;
And when my voice is lost in death,
Praise shall employ my nobler powers…”

The hymn reflects the conviction that praise should not depend on circumstances. Watts points the worshipper toward God as the faithful Creator and everlasting source of hope, while reminding us that earthly rulers and human strength are temporary.

One of the most memorable ideas in the hymn is its confidence in God’s enduring care. Even as human life comes to an end, the singer looks beyond death with the assurance that praise continues in the presence of the Maker.

“I’ll Praise My Maker While I’ve Breath” became widely loved in Christian worship and has appeared in numerous hymnals across generations. Its enduring appeal lies in its simple but profound message: life itself is an opportunity to praise God, and that praise ultimately reaches beyond the limits of earthly life.

Isaac Watts died in 1748, but his hymns continued to shape Christian worship around the world. Through this hymn, his paraphrase of Psalm 146 remains a powerful invitation to make praise a lifelong commitment.

The old expression, “actions speak louder than words,” has been passed down from generation to generation, but the meaning is the same. It is much easier to tell someone you care about them, but it means so much more to actually “show” them how much you care. When you tell your friend, “You mean so much to me, I truly value your friendship,” it really doesn’t feel like “love” when you’re screaming at them the next day because they did something you didn’t like! Real love is demonstrated by your actions, not just your words. So it is with your relationship with Christ. You can tell God you love Him every day, but when you choose to break His commandments, it doesn’t “show” Him your love. Talk is cheap, but doing what you say is worth so much more! Determine to show your love by reflecting God’s character in everything you do and say! He loves to hear your praises as well as “see” you demonstrate your love for Him. The LORD our God, mighty in our midst, not only saves but also rejoices over us with joy. He rests in His love and joys over us with singing. Imagine our Creator singing over His beloved children, much like a parent sings a lullaby. This imagery shows a God who tenderly rocks us, calming our spirits with His presence. His immense love is a comforting embrace, assuring us of His constant care and affection, like a mother's gentle comfort.

Prayer

God, when life's storms come raging at me, help me remember these words and seek safety, solace, and peace in Your protective care. As You reveal more of the grace of Your salvation, help me recognize Your song of love over my life. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Where To Begin
Blessed be your glorious name, and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise.

Nehemiah 9:5b
This prayer in the book of Nehemiah is a great model that will teach us much for our own prayer life. It begins with a great section of praise. First, God is praised as the Creator and Maker of everything. Beginning with the life He gave you is a great place to start when you are praising God. It seems strange to me that people who are dependent every moment on God to give them life allow themselves so easily to forget that fact. God sustains us moment by moment. We ought to be grateful for that. Let us never forget that our very breath comes from Him.

The next section praises God as the caller and chooser of people. He is the one who gives undeserved blessings to those He chooses. God is the keeper of promises. Not one of us would be here today if it were not for that merciful, sovereign call of God. Jesus said, No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him (John 6:44). We are here today because the Spirit of God in wondrous grace has drawn us to Himself.

Then the people praise God as the deliverer from sin and its enslavement. They retell the history of this nation, beginning with the call of Abraham and their deliverance from Egypt. Some of us have forgotten the lessons God has taught us and have returned to the same sins, plunging ourselves once more into rebellion and slavery. Let us never forget that we have been wonderfully, even miraculously, delivered by the great hand of God.

Praise for God as the great provider of wisdom and the necessities of life follows. Here is God's providential care of His own. He taught this people how to live in the midst of great wickedness. He knew he was sending them into a land inhabited by tribes who were morally degraded to a degree that is appalling to us today. They offered their children to the god Molech by throwing them alive into a furnace of fire. It was among these people that the Israelites had to live. Yet God taught them how to avoid defilement from those things. He taught them how to be friends with these people but not be destroyed by their immorality. It is exactly the situation we are called to live in today. God has given us this wonderful book that teaches us the rules of life, health, salvation, and deliverance and the inner strength that can resist the temptations that abound all around us. To neglect it is folly.

God also supplied their needs. He gave them bread to eat when there was none. He gave them water from the rock in the middle of the desert. That is not only an account of meeting physical needs, but it describes the meeting of spiritual needs as well. The New Testament tells us these are pictures of Christ: He is the bread of life; He is the water of life. As the Israelites learned the meaning of these symbols, they began to understand that there was One coming who would fully meet the need of the human heart.

You pray to build a close relationship with God, share your inner thoughts and heavy burdens, and show that you trust and depend on Him instead of trying to handle life all by yourself.

Building a Connection

Talk to God: Prayer is simply having a personal conversation with your Creator.

Grow Closer: It lets you feel God's love and get to know His heart.

Show Trust: Asking for help proves you rely on God to care for you.

Have you ever met an angry Christian?

You may have come across Christians who seem to grumble, complain, or even speak harshly about other people. Maybe we’ve even been that person at times in our own life.

If we're not careful, we can easily become self-righteous within Christianity. After all, we know the truth and others may not. We might see how tempting it can be to look down on others, demean them, or consider them as worse off than ourselves.

But this misses the point of the Gospel of Jesus.

The Gospel tells us that all of us begin at the same starting point. And it’s only by Grace through faith that we come to Salvation and learn the truth about God’s love for us.

That doesn’t make us any better than other Christians! In fact, as Paul says in *Ephesians 4:2,* we should actually be humble and gentle with others, rather than harsh and critical. He says we are to be patient with one another, helping each other in every way possible so we can all grow together.

These ideas aren’t original to Paul. They actually came from how Jesus lived His life. As followers of Jesus, we too should strive to be gentle, humble, and patient with everyone in our lives. Regardless of whether they look or think a different way, every person deserves dignity, patience, and love.

Let's take some time today to consider a few ways that we can grow in patience, humility, and love with others. It could be slowing down long enough for people to know we care, saying something encouraging to someone, or admitting that we’ve made a mistake.

Let's make the decision today to live in humility and grace with others.

Father God, Your Word inspires us to be humble and gentle; to lead with patience and unconditional love. But we can't live that way without Your help. Teach us how to extend grace and forgiveness to those around us. In Jesus’ Mighty Name, Amen.

RESTING IN GOD'S FAITHFUL CARE

A WORD FROM THE WORD:

“The Lord is my shepherd, I have everything I need.” Psalm 23:1 GNB.

One of the fulfilling understandings that one would derive from David’s declaration in our foundational Scripture is that beyond the poetic, it is more of prophetic.
When the LORD is your Shepherd, lack becomes an impossibility. Here are some qualities of true shepherd, he guides, protects, provides, and ensures the wellbeing of the sheep. The LORD Jesus is not a distant supervisor; He is the ever-present Shepherd who walks with you daily.

Your life becomes what He envisions for you when you come to the point of realising and recognising that you are not at the mercy of situations and circumstances. You are under divine Shepherdhood. The vision of tomorrow may not be clear to you, but your Shepherd has already gone ahead of you. He knows the path, He knows the dangers, and He knows the green pastures prepared for you. All you have to do is to follow Him duly.

See, the LORD Jesus is not just a shepherd, He is your Shepherd. Personalised. Faithful and Intentional. The implications of this means that you will not lack direction, protection, supply, peace, or victory. Everything you need to fulfil your God-given destiny is already in His hands.

Rest assured, and rest in His guidance. Trust His leading, trust His process, follow His voice, He has no record of failure, and cannot fail.
