HAVING THE RIGHT PRIORITIES WHEN WALKING WITH CHRIST

Walking with Christ requires a deliberate reordering of our lives. In a world saturated with distractions, ambition, and endless demands, keeping our focus centered on God is the ultimate challenge of discipleship. True spiritual maturity is not merely about avoiding sin; it is about cultivating an undivided heart that places God above all else.
The foundation of proper spiritual priority is explicitly commanded in Matthew 6:33: "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Jesus addresses the universal human anxiety regarding sustenance, success, and security. By commanding us to seek His kingdom first, Christ establishes that God’s rule, His values, and His glory must govern every decision. Everything else—career, relationships, and material needs—must occupy a secondary, dependent place.
To maintain this divine alignment, we must recognize the radical nature of following Jesus. In Luke 14:26, Christ uses striking language: "If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple." This hyperbole does not negate the commandment to honor our families; rather, it illustrates that our love for Christ must be so supreme that all other earthly attachments look like indifference by comparison. Walking with Him means He holds the absolute highest allegiance of our hearts.
Furthermore, setting the right priorities demands that we consciously detach ourselves from the fleeting values of this age. The Apostle Paul underscores this eternal perspective in Colossians 3:2: "Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things." When our daily ambitions, time management, and emotional investments are anchored in eternity, temporal pressures lose their grip on us. We stop living for the applause of the world and begin living for the audience of One.
Ultimately, having the right priorities when walking with Christ transforms our daily existence. It simplifies our choices, eradicates crippling anxiety, and infuses our ordinary routines with extraordinary, eternal purpose. When Jesus is truly our first love, everything else falls perfectly into its proper place.

Lord, realign my heart today. Forgive me for the times I let worldly distractions and temporal pursuits take the place that belongs to You alone. Help me to seek Your kingdom first with unwavering devotion. May my love for Christ surpass every earthly attachment, anchoring my mind on things above. Grant me the grace to walk closely with You, trusting that as I put You first, You will faithfully provide for all my needs. Amen.

Rip Off the Mask

“Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit.” Psalm 34:13

Finishing a brief therapy session, I slumped down on the side of my hospital bed. A charge nurse popped into my room to ask how I was doing.

“Great,” I smiled. “How was your son’s game?”

After our quick exchange I turned back to my therapist who sat on the window ledge, shaking his head.

“You are your own worst enemy, Shelley!”

My puzzled look prompted his further explanation. “I know you well enough now to know that when your pain becomes intolerable, you breathe in short gasps and perspiration beads on your forehead. But, you smile and gloss over your condition with a friendly word. Most people can’t be cheery when they’re suffering, and—hey—medical personnel are trained to determine treatment by reading facial expressions.”

He had worked with me earlier that month during my first week of hospitalization, following a five-hour spinal surgery. I suffered several complications—including nerve damage in my groins and an irreparable rotator cuff tear. Now, I had been readmitted because I couldn’t walk.

He called it correctly—brutal pain surged through my back, groins, and shoulder. His gentle rebuke echoed words from my distant past, when a spinal surgeon called me “my own worst enemy” for the same reason.

I’m a “grin-and-bear it” kind of gal. Not wanting to be perceived as a whiner, I mask the truth with a smile, using verbal camouflage to hide my brokenness.

Don’t pity me—you likely hide behind the same deflection technique. Have you ever arrived at church heavy-hearted, and when someone asked how you’re doing, you replied, “Doing great! Happy Sabbath!”? Later, you headed home with the same sadness, and no one had the opportunity to pray for you. Or you laugh off hurt feelings following a cutting remark, and never privately confront the abuser. Or a loved one asks, “Is something wrong?” and you hide your frustration with “No! I’m fine.”

People are not mind readers! Our words define us. When we express ourselves honestly, we become visible. When we hide behind a mask of verbal camouflage, we are invisible to others. Some of us wall in our pain, and—sadly—we often feel as if no one really cares.

Verbal camouflage is deceitful.

I get it! We don’t want to wear our feelings on our sleeves. But we need to figure out an honest response to the casual question, “How are you?” If you’re not doing fine—don’t lie about it. While you don’t want to gush out unwanted details, a simple, “I’ll get better!” or “I’m trusting the Lord!” or “I’m blessed, no matter what!” are some of the possible responses. If the person is unknown to you, or too busy to stop for discovery, they’ll go on. If, however, they respond, “Tell me about it!” you will know God placed that person in your path to comfort you.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

This is one of my favorite verses on God’s love and patience. There is nothing more revealing of His nature than the fact that He is patient with us because He doesn’t want a single soul to perish but wants EVERYONE to repent and be saved. If you have followed my writing for any length of time, you have seen me reference this verse numerous times.

The Apostle Peter wrote this verse amidst a portion of writing that addressed mockers, false teachers, and scoffers who argued that Jesus was not coming back because history was continuing unchanged. Peter reminded his readers that it was God who had judged the ancient world through the Flood which demonstrated the fact that God DOES intervene with history when there is a need. And Scripture tells us that the world is destined for destruction by fire in the future. The only way to avoid that end ourselves is to seek Him, repent, and turn to Him as Lord of our lives.

He is not a God who sits outside of things and ignores all that is going on. He is a God with a plan, one that was put in motion when man first chose to sin by eating of the Tree of Knowledge, a plan that has been playing out over time and culminates with His Son returning to earth in triumph.

The key to remember is that God works on a different time table than we do. He exists outside of time as we know it, which our minds cannot comprehend. Scripture tells us that to Him a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years is like a day, meaning time is nothing to Him because He sees everything - beginning, middle, and end. And because of this view, He can wait patiently for repentance. What we perceive as delay or Him being slow to respond is actually Him being exactly who He is - a patient, loving Father who wants none to perish.

Knowing that our world is destined for destruction by fire, believers must live holy, Godly lives as we wait for the new heaven and earth. But more importantly, we should be actively sharing the Gospel with others, helping them to repent and turn to God, too. Christ’s return will arrive unexpectedly. We don’t know when it will happen.

So while we await that time, we must be prepared which means getting right with God and helping others do the same. What can you do today to set your heart right? And who can you share the Gospel with today?

Time is running out and there are millions who don’t yet know Him, who are living lives of sin, prisoners to their worldly practices. God is patiently waiting for all to repent but how can they repent if they are not aware of their need for Him? Let God use you today to help grow His kingdom and save a soul.

And Scripture tells us that the world is destined for destruction by fire in the future. The only way to avoid that end ourselves is to seek Him, repent, and turn to Him as Lord of our lives. He is not a God who sits outside of things and ignores all that is going on. He is a God with a plan, one that was put in motion when man first chose to sin by eating of the Tree of Knowledge, a plan that has been playing out over time and culminates with His Son returning to earth in triumph. The key to remember is that God works on a different time table than we do. He exists outside of time as we know it, which our minds cannot comprehend. Scripture tells us that to Him a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years is like a day, meaning time is nothing to Him because He sees everything - beginning, middle, and end. And because of this view, He can wait patiently for repentance. What we perceive as delay or Him being slow to respond is actually Him being exactly who He is - a patient, loving Father who wants none to perish. Knowing that our world is destined for destruction by fire, believers must live holy, Godly lives as we wait for the new heaven and earth. But more importantly, we should be actively sharing the Gospel with others, helping them to repent and turn to God, too. Christ’s return will arrive unexpectedly. We don’t know when it will happen. So while we await that time, we must be prepared which means getting right with God and helping others do the same. What can you do today to set your heart right? And who can you share the Gospel with today? Time is running out and there are millions who don’t yet know Him, who are living lives of sin, prisoners to their worldly practices. God is patiently waiting for all to repent but how can they repent if they are not aware of their need for Him? Rip Off the Mask

“Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit.” Psalm 34:13

Finishing a brief therapy session, I slumped down on the side of my hospital bed. A charge nurse popped into my room to ask how I was doing.

“Great,” I smiled. “How was your son’s game?”

After our quick exchange I turned back to my therapist who sat on the window ledge, shaking his head.

“You are your own worst enemy, Shelley!”

My puzzled look prompted his further explanation. “I know you well enough now to know that when your pain becomes intolerable, you breathe in short gasps and perspiration beads on your forehead. But, you smile and gloss over your condition with a friendly word. Most people can’t be cheery when they’re suffering, and—hey—medical personnel are trained to determine treatment by reading facial expressions.”

He had worked with me earlier that month during my first week of hospitalization, following a five-hour spinal surgery. I suffered several complications—including nerve damage in my groins and an irreparable rotator cuff tear. Now, I had been readmitted because I couldn’t walk.

He called it correctly—brutal pain surged through my back, groins, and shoulder. His gentle rebuke echoed words from my distant past, when a spinal surgeon called me “my own worst enemy” for the same reason.

I’m a “grin-and-bear it” kind of gal. Not wanting to be perceived as a whiner, I mask the truth with a smile, using verbal camouflage to hide my brokenness.

Don’t pity me—you likely hide behind the same deflection technique. Have you ever arrived at church heavy-hearted, and when someone asked how you’re doing, you replied, “Doing great! Happy Sabbath!”? Later, you headed home with the same sadness, and no one had the opportunity to pray for you. Or you laugh off hurt feelings following a cutting remark, and never privately confront the abuser. Or a loved one asks, “Is something wrong?” and you hide your frustration with “No! I’m fine.”

People are not mind readers! Our words define us. When we express ourselves honestly, we become visible. When we hide behind a mask of verbal camouflage, we are invisible to others. Some of us wall in our pain, and—sadly—we often feel as if no one really cares.

Verbal camouflage is deceitful.

I get it! We don’t want to wear our feelings on our sleeves. But we need to figure out an honest response to the casual question, “How are you?” If you’re not doing fine—don’t lie about it. While you don’t want to gush out unwanted details, a simple, “I’ll get better!” or “I’m trusting the Lord!” or “I’m blessed, no matter what!” are some of the possible responses. If the person is unknown to you, or too busy to stop for discovery, they’ll go on. If, however, they respond, “Tell me about it!” you will know God placed that person in your path to comfort you.
