Everything moves toward Christ’s preeminence. The Old Testament prepares the way; the New Testament reveals Him as the fulfillment. Together they form 66 inspired books—39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New. The Old Testament (39 Books): God’s Promises and Preparation The Old Testament shows God creating the world, choosing a people, giving them His law, and promising a coming King who would fix what sin broke. It repeatedly points forward to the Messiah. Law (Pentateuch – 5 books): Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. These lay the foundation. Genesis shows creation, the fall, and God’s first promises. Exodus–Deuteronomy record God’s rescue of Israel from Egypt, the giving of the Torah at Sinai, and the covenant instructions for a holy people. Historical Books (12 books): Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1–2 Samuel, 1–2 Kings, 1–2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther. They trace Israel’s life in the Promised Land, their cycles of obedience and rebellion, the rise and fall of the monarchy, exile in Babylon, and return. They demonstrate that human kings fail, but God remains faithful to His promises. Wisdom and Poetry (5 books): Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon. These teach how to live wisely under God’s rule. They explore suffering, worship, daily righteousness, the emptiness of life without God, and the beauty of covenant love. Prophets (17 books): Major Prophets (5): Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel. Minor Prophets (12): Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi. The prophets confront idolatry, call for repentance, warn of judgment, and repeatedly promise a coming Deliverer, a new covenant, and a kingdom that will never end. The entire Old Testament builds expectation: a seed of the woman, a descendant of Abraham, a prophet like Moses, a son of David, a suffering servant, and a King who will reign forever. The New Testament (27 Books): Christ’s Arrival and the New Creation The New Testament announces that Jesus is the promised King. He is the preeminent One in whom all God’s promises find their “Yes” (2 Corinthians 1:20). It shows His life, death, resurrection, the birth of the church, and the final renewal of all things. Gospels (4 books): Matthew, Mark, Luke, John. These present Jesus from four angles: as King (Matthew), servant (Mark), perfect man (Luke), and eternal God (John). They record His teaching, miracles, crucifixion for sins, and resurrection. History (1 book): Acts. Luke’s second volume shows the Holy Spirit empowering the early church to take the gospel from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. It records the rapid spread of the message that Jesus is Lord. Letters (21 books): Paul’s Letters (13): Romans, 1–2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1–2 Thessalonians, 1–2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon. These explain the gospel, the meaning of Christ’s work, how the church should live, and how believers stand secure in Him. General Letters (8): Hebrews, James, 1–2 Peter, 1–3 John, Jude. These encourage perseverance, warn against false teaching, and call for holy living. Prophecy (1 book): Revelation. This apocalyptic letter reveals Christ as the victorious Lamb and coming King. It comforts suffering believers and shows the final defeat of evil and the making of a new heaven and new earth. How the Two Testaments Fit Together The Old Testament is not obsolete. Jesus said He came to fulfill it, not abolish it (Matthew 5:17). The New Testament constantly quotes and explains the Old, showing that Christ is the true temple, the better Moses, the perfect high priest, the faithful Israel, and the eternal King. Everything in the Bible centers on the supremacy and preeminence of Christ that we have been studying in Colossians 1. 📌 Today's Readings are from the Book of 1 Kings 17–18 | 2 Corinthians 6📌 👇 Overviews Are Below (PLEASE READ YOUR BIBLE: Overviews Do Not Replace Daily Reading) 👇 1 Kings 17 The God Who Provides and Gives Life 1 Kings 17 introduces Elijah the prophet, one of the most influential servants of God in the Old Testament. At a time when Israel has embraced idolatry under King Ahab and Jezebel, God raises up a faithful prophet to declare His truth. Elijah suddenly appears before Ahab and announces that there will be no rain except by the word of the Lord. In a nation devoted to Baal, who was believed to control rain and fertility, God demonstrates that He alone rules over creation. After delivering God's message, Elijah obeys the Lord's instruction to hide by the Brook Cherith. There, God miraculously provides food through ravens and water from the brook. Elijah learns that God's provision is not dependent upon favorable circumstances. Even during a national drought, the Lord faithfully supplies everything His servant needs. When the brook eventually dries up, God directs Elijah to a widow in Zarephath. This woman is preparing what she believes will be her family's final meal before starvation. Yet through Elijah's obedience and the widow's faith, God performs another miracle. Her flour and oil never run out throughout the famine. The Lord provides daily, reminding both Elijah and the widow that His resources are never exhausted. The chapter reaches its climax when the widow's son becomes gravely ill and dies. Elijah cries out to the Lord, and God restores the child's life. This miracle reveals the Lord's authority not only over nature and provision but also over life itself. The widow recognizes that Elijah truly speaks the Word of the Lord, and her faith is strengthened through God's miraculous intervention. Throughout the chapter, Elijah repeatedly responds to God's direction with immediate obedience. Whether hiding beside a brook, depending on ravens, or staying in the home of a poor widow, he trusts God's instructions even when they seem unusual. His confidence rests not in visible resources but in the faithfulness of the One who called him. Theologically, 1 Kings 17 reveals God as the sovereign Provider and Giver of life. He alone controls creation, sustains His people, and possesses authority over death itself. The chapter teaches that God's provision often comes in unexpected ways, requiring His people to walk by faith rather than by sight. This chapter points powerfully to Christ. Just as Elijah brought God's life-giving power into the widow's home, Jesus came proclaiming Himself as the Bread of Life and the Resurrection and the Life. Christ not only provides for physical needs but offers eternal life to all who believe in Him. Through His resurrection, He demonstrated complete authority over death forever. For believers today, 1 Kings 17 reminds us that God remains faithful in every season of life. Whether we experience abundance or scarcity, certainty or uncertainty, the Lord is our Provider. He often teaches us to trust Him one day at a time, supplying exactly what we need according to His wisdom. In Christ, we can confidently rest in the God who provides, sustains, and gives eternal life. 1 Kings 18 The Lord Alone Is God 1 Kings 18 records one of the greatest demonstrations of God's power in all of Scripture. After years of drought, the Lord sends Elijah to confront King Ahab and the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. The nation has reached a spiritual crossroads, wavering between worshiping the Lord and following false gods. God now calls His people to make a decisive choice. Before the confrontation, Elijah meets Obadiah, a faithful servant who has remained loyal to the Lord even while serving in Ahab's administration. Obadiah's quiet faithfulness reminds us that God always preserves a remnant, even in times of widespread spiritual darkness. While Elijah ministers publicly, Obadiah serves faithfully behind the scenes. Both are essential to God's work. When Elijah stands before the people, he exposes their divided loyalties. They have attempted to worship both the Lord and Baal, but Elijah declares that such compromise is impossible. True worship demands wholehearted devotion. The people must decide whom they will serve. The contest on Mount Carmel demonstrates the complete inability of false gods. The prophets of Baal cry out for hours, perform elaborate rituals, and exhaust themselves, yet no answer comes because Baal has no power. Elijah then repairs the altar of the Lord, saturates the sacrifice with water, and prays a simple prayer of faith. Immediately, God answers with fire from heaven, consuming the sacrifice, the altar, the water, and everything around it. The Lord unmistakably reveals Himself as the one true God. The people fall on their faces in worship, acknowledging that the Lord alone is God. The drought then comes to an end as Elijah prays persistently and the long-awaited rain begins to fall. God's judgment gives way to mercy as the nation receives both spiritual and physical restoration. This chapter demonstrates that genuine revival begins when God's people return wholeheartedly to Him. Elijah does not rely on human strength or impressive methods. He simply trusts God's Word and calls the people to repentance. The Lord alone brings the victory. Theologically, 1 Kings 18 reveals God's absolute supremacy over every false god and every human idol. He alone answers prayer, receives worship, and deserves complete devotion. The chapter also demonstrates that repentance opens the door for God's restoring grace. This chapter points directly to Christ. Jesus is the ultimate revelation of the living God, exposing every false hope and calling people to wholehearted faith. Through His sacrifice, He restored the broken relationship between God and humanity, accomplishing what every Old Testament altar could only foreshadow. Christ alone is worthy of our worship because He alone conquered sin, death, and the grave. For believers today, 1 Kings 18 challenges us to examine our own hearts. God calls us to reject every competing allegiance and worship Him alone. Divided hearts cannot experience the fullness of His blessing. In Christ, we are invited to live with wholehearted faith, confident that the living God still answers prayer, reveals His power, and faithfully restores those who return to Him. 2 Corinthians 6 — Living as God's Holy People 2 Corinthians chapter 6 continues Paul's appeal for believers to faithfully respond to the grace they have received through the Christ, the Son of God. After presenting the ministry of reconciliation in the previous chapter, Paul now urges the church to live in a manner worthy of that calling. The chapter is a powerful invitation to wholehearted devotion, steadfast endurance, and holy living. God's redemptive plan does not merely save people from sin; it transforms them into a people who reflect His character and live for His glory. The chapter begins with an urgent appeal not to receive God's grace without allowing it to produce lasting change. Salvation is a gift freely given through the Christ, but that gift is meant to result in a transformed life. Christian living is not simply believing the gospel intellectually but allowing the grace of God to shape every area of life. The Son of God calls His followers to respond to His mercy with faithful obedience and complete surrender. Paul reminds the believers that now is the time to respond to God. The opportunity to receive His grace and walk in His will is always present. The redemptive plan has been accomplished through the Christ, and the invitation to experience His salvation remains open. This creates a sense of urgency, encouraging believers not to delay their commitment or become spiritually complacent. The chapter then offers a glimpse into the character of faithful ministry. Paul describes the many hardships, persecutions, sacrifices, and trials he has endured while serving the Christ. Yet despite these difficulties, he remains steadfast because his confidence rests in the Son of God rather than in his circumstances. Christian living often includes seasons of suffering, but these trials do not diminish God's faithfulness. Instead, they become opportunities for His strength to be displayed. Paul's description of ministry reveals many apparent contradictions. Outwardly there may be weakness, rejection, poverty, and hardship, yet spiritually there is joy, strength, and abundance in the Christ. This reflects the very pattern established by the Son of God Himself. Jesus entered the world in humility, suffered rejection, and willingly endured the cross before entering His glory. Those who follow Him should not be surprised when their lives reflect that same pattern of sacrifice followed by eternal reward. Throughout the chapter, Paul's deep affection for the Corinthian believers becomes evident. He speaks openly from his heart, longing for them to respond with the same openness toward him and, more importantly, toward God. Genuine Christian relationships are built upon love, truth, humility, and mutual encouragement. The redemptive plan not only restores people to God but also creates unity among those who belong to the body of the Christ. The final section contains one of the New Testament's clearest calls to spiritual separation. Paul urges believers not to become unequally joined with influences that would draw them away from faithful devotion to the Son of God. This instruction extends far beyond individual relationships and applies to every partnership, commitment, or influence that compromises obedience to the Christ. Christian living requires discernment because believers belong to God's kingdom while living in a fallen world. This call to holiness is not based on legalism but on identity. Those who have been redeemed by the Christ are now God's temple, indwelt by His Holy Spirit. Because God has chosen to dwell among His people, they are called to live lives that reflect His holiness. The redemptive plan transforms believers into God's dwelling place, making purity and obedience natural expressions of their relationship with Him. Paul concludes by reminding believers of God's covenant promises. The Lord promises to dwell with His people, walk among them, receive them as His own, and relate to them as a loving Father. These promises reveal the incredible privilege of belonging to the family of God through the Son of God. Holiness is not pursued to earn God's acceptance but because believers have already been accepted through the finished work of the Christ. Throughout this chapter, the focus remains on wholehearted devotion to the Son of God. His grace empowers faithful service, sustains believers through suffering, and calls them to a life that is distinct from the values of the world. God's redemptive plan produces a people who are committed to Him in every area of life, reflecting His holiness while extending His love to others. For believers today, this chapter calls us to embrace God's grace with wholehearted commitment. Christian living requires perseverance through trials, faithfulness in ministry, and a willingness to remain separate from influences that hinder our walk with the Christ. We are reminded that we are God's dwelling place, called to reflect His holiness and represent His kingdom in the world. THERE IS A BURIAL SHROUD OVER THE EARTH "On this mountain, He will destroy the shroud that enfolds all peoples, the sheet that covers all nations." (Isaiah 25:7–8) There is something covering the nations. It has been there since Adam sinned. Some translations call it a burial shroud. Think about Lazarus. When he came out of the tomb, Jesus said, "Loose him." He still had burial clothes wrapped around him. (John 11:43–44) When God warned Adam, "In the day you eat of it, you shall surely die," death entered humanity. (Genesis 2:17) Romans explains that through one man's sin, death entered the world, and death reigned. (Romans 5:12, 17) The whole earth has lived under that burial shroud ever since. Isaiah prophesied that God would destroy it. But notice where: "On this mountain." Where is that mountain? Mount Zion. The Church. (Hebrews 12:22–24) The tearing of the burial shroud begins in God's house. That is why Obadiah says, "Upon Mount Zion there shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions." (Obadiah 1:17) Deliverance begins there. The destruction of death begins there. The glory of God begins there before it fills the whole earth just as God promised. The Church is not merely a gathering place. It is where God's work of reversing Adam's curse begins to manifest. May every mist, shroud or covering that is hindering the full manifestation of God's presence in your life, your family and your destiny be removed so you can be able to access the things that has been freely given to you in Jesus' Mighty Name! I declare that every power resisting my progress is broken by the authority of God. Every limitation, setback, and hindrance standing between me and my divine inheritance is removed.
