“Return to Bethel: A Call to Renewal”
Introduction
Genesis 35 is a chapter of restoration and renewal. After the chaos and moral decline of chapter 34, God calls Jacob to return to Bethel — the very place where He first appeared to him years before when Jacob was fleeing from Esau.
This chapter marks a spiritual turning point. Jacob leads his family to purify themselves and worship the Lord again. It’s a reminder that when life drifts away from God, His voice calls us back to the altar — back to the place of first encounter.

● Author: Moses, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit
● Audience: The Israelites, learning about repentance, renewal, and the importance of covenant worship

Verse-by-Verse Overview
Verses 1–4 – God’s Call to Return
God tells Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there, and make an altar to God.” Jacob commands his household to remove all foreign gods, purify themselves, and change their clothes. They bury the idols under the oak near Shechem.
Lesson: Renewal begins with repentance. You cannot worship the true God while holding onto false gods.
Verses 5–7 – God’s Protection and Worship Restored
As Jacob’s family travels, God puts fear into the surrounding cities so that no one harms them. Jacob builds an altar at Bethel and calls the place El-Bethel (“God of the house of God”).
Lesson: Obedience brings God’s protection. When you return to Him, He surrounds you with His presence.
Verse 8 – The Death of Deborah
Rebekah’s nurse, Deborah, dies and is buried under an oak called Allon Bacuth (“oak of weeping”).
Lesson: Even in times of renewal, loss can come — but God’s comfort meets us there.
Verses 9–15 – God Reaffirms His Covenant
God appears again to Jacob, blesses him, and repeats the covenant promise: a nation and kings will come from him, and the land of Canaan will be his descendants’ inheritance. God also reaffirms Jacob’s new name — Israel. Jacob sets up a stone pillar and pours oil and wine upon it as a sign of worship.
Lesson: When you return to God, He restores your identity and renews His promises.
Verses 16–20 – Rachel’s Death and Benjamin’s Birth
While traveling toward Ephrath (Bethlehem), Rachel gives birth to Benjamin but dies in childbirth. Jacob buries her on the way and sets up a pillar on her grave.
Lesson: God’s promises often unfold through both joy and pain. Even in loss, His plan continues.
Verses 21–26 – Jacob’s Family Grows
Jacob continues to dwell in the land. Reuben sins by sleeping with Bilhah, his father’s concubine — a decision that later costs him his birthright. The chapter lists Jacob’s twelve sons — the beginning of the twelve tribes of Israel.
Lesson: God’s plan moves forward even through human failure. His covenant is stronger than our mistakes.
Verses 27–29 – Isaac’s Death and Burial
Jacob returns home to his father Isaac in Hebron. Isaac dies at 180 years old, and both Jacob and Esau bury him together — another sign of reconciliation.
Lesson: God’s promises span generations. The faith of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob proves that God’s covenant never dies with one person.
