Genesis 16 – “Hagar and the God Who Sees”
Introduction
Genesis 16 reveals what happens when we try to fulfill God’s promises our own way instead of His way. Ten years after God promised Abram a son, Sarai grows impatient and gives her maidservant, Hagar, to Abram to bear a child. Their decision brings conflict and sorrow—but also a powerful revelation of God’s mercy and care.
This chapter shows that even when we make mistakes, God still sees, hears, and cares for us. His plans
cannot be destroyed by human failure.
Context
● Author: Moses, inspired by the Holy Spirit.
● Audience: The Israelites, learning about their ancestors’ struggles and God’s faithfulness.
● Setting: The land of Canaan, during the waiting period between God’s promise to Abram (Genesis 15)
and the birth of Isaac (Genesis 21).
● Purpose: To show the consequences of impatience, the pain of unbelief, and the mercy of a God who
sees and redeems.
Verse-by-Verse Overview
Verses 1–2: Sarai’s plan to help God.
Sarai, unable to conceive, tells Abram to take Hagar, her Egyptian maid, so she can have children through her. Abram agrees.
Lesson: Impatience leads to compromise. When we try to help God’s plan, we often create problems instead of blessings.
Verses 3–4: The plan backfires.
Hagar becomes pregnant, and pride and tension arise between her and Sarai.
Lesson: Acting outside of God’s will breeds division and resentment. What begins in the flesh cannot produce peace.
Verses 5–6: Conflict and mistreatment.
Sarai blames Abram for the situation. Abram tells her to handle it as she sees fit, and Sarai treats Hagar
harshly, causing her to flee.
Lesson: Disobedience affects relationships. When we act out of frustration, others often suffer too.
Verses 7–9: God meets Hagar in the wilderness.
The Angel of the Lord finds Hagar near a spring in the desert and calls her by name. He tells her to return and submit, promising to multiply her descendants.
Lesson: God pursues the brokenhearted. Even when we run away, His grace finds us where we are.
Verses 10–12: God’s promise to Hagar.
God tells Hagar her son will be named Ishmael, meaning “God hears.” Ishmael will become the father of a great nation, though his descendants will live in tension with others.
Lesson: God hears every cry and keeps His word, even in difficult circumstances.
Verse 13: Hagar names the Lord “El Roi.”
Hagar calls the Lord El Roi, meaning “the God who sees me.” She says, “I have seen the One who sees me.”
Lesson: God is not distant. He sees your pain, your fear, and your heart—and He cares deeply.
Verses 14–16: Hagar returns and Ishmael is born.
Hagar gives birth to Ishmael when Abram is 86 years old. Though this wasn’t God’s chosen plan, His mercy continues.
Lesson: Our failures don’t cancel God’s faithfulness. His purpose still stands.

1. Wait on God’s Timing: Don’t rush His promises—delay is not denial.
2. Trust God’s Way: His plans bring peace; ours bring confusion.
