Gravenhurst also produced surgeon and activist Norman Bethune: proposed a universal health care system for Canada in 1936. AND, is highly revered as a national hero in China

Happy birthday to Ethel Caterham, who today turns 117, making her the world's oldest verified living person and the oldest British person in recorded history.
Born on 21 August 1909 in Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire, Ethel spent her early years in Tidworth before travelling to British India at just 18 to work as an au pair. She married Norman Caterham at Salisbury Cathedral in 1933, the same cathedral where he had once sung as a choirboy, and the couple went on to live in Hong Kong and Gibraltar during his military postings, raising two daughters along the way.
Ethel drove until she was 97 and enjoyed playing contract bridge well into her hundreds, even surviving a bout of Covid-19 at the age of 110. She became the last surviving subject of King Edward VII in 2022, and last September met King Charles III, recalling his investiture back in 1969.
She became the world's oldest living person in April 2025 and the last known person alive born in the 1900s decade, credentials that made this year's milestone all the more remarkable.

What if the Church’s answer to a changing nation is not louder arguments, but deeper prayer?
From August 20 to 22, Christians from across Britain and beyond are expected to gather at Manchester Central for Battle for Britain, a three-day gathering organized by Prayer Storm and centered on prayer, worship, fasting, and spiritual renewal. The event is returning for its second year.
Led by James Aladiran, Prayer Storm describes the gathering as a call to contend in prayer for the spiritual destiny of Britain. Recent Prayer Storm messages have urged believers toward consecration, intercession, and a renewed hunger for God.
The language of “battle” may sound confrontational, but the heart of the gathering is different.
The battle Christians are called to fight is not against people.
Paul wrote, “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood” (Ephesians 6:12).
That changes everything.
We do not pray against our neighbors. We pray for them. We do not ask God to destroy those who disagree with us. We ask Him to reveal Christ to them. We do not respond to cultural darkness with hatred. We respond with truth, holiness, love, and prayer.
This is especially important when Christians feel increasingly uncertain about faith, public witness, and the direction of society.
Prayer Storm’s message is that spiritual renewal cannot be manufactured through politics, outrage, or human strategy. It begins with dependence upon God. Their 2026 gathering is explicitly framed around prayer, worship, teaching, and intercession.
And perhaps Britain needs more than another debate.
Perhaps it needs a Church on its knees.
A generation that knows how to post needs to rediscover how to pray.
A Church that knows how to speak must also learn how to seek God.
A nation facing uncertainty needs believers who will stand in the gap.
So whether you are in Manchester or thousands of miles away, the invitation is bigger than an event.
Pray for Britain.
Pray for its leaders.
Pray for families.
Pray for churches.
Pray for young people.
Pray for those who have never heard the Gospel.
Pray for Christians proclaiming Jesus publicly.
Pray for awakening.
Because spiritual warfare is not permission to hate people.
It is a summons to love people enough to pray.
May Britain discover again what happens when the Church stops merely talking about revival and begins crying out to God for it.
Lord, awaken Your Church. Revive Your people. Draw Britain to Jesus.

A 35-year-old Mars Bar has been found during a house clearance in Scunthorpe ( England ) sparking claims that it highlights the effects of shrinkflation.
Victoria Gordon, who runs a cleaning service, spotted the bar while clearing out a hoarder's house, noticing it was almost the length of her hand. The 1991 wrapper shows a weight of 62.5g, compared with today's Mars Bar at just 40g, a difference of over 20g.
A Mars spokesperson said the company has made a number of updates to its bar sizes and packaging over the past 35 years to reflect consumer demand, alongside factors including manufacturing costs and the price of cocoa. Gordon, who posts hoarding clear-out videos online, said she nearly threw the bar in the skip but is now considering taking it on a UK tour after the post went viral.

A British millionaire is putting his own money on the line to defend Christian street preachers.
Samuel Leeds, a successful property entrepreneur and devout Christian, has publicly pledged to personally fund legal representation for any Christian street preacher in Britain who faces police action simply for sharing their faith.
He says he is “outraged and shocked.”
“I am outraged and shocked to see Christians getting arrested on the streets and being told that they’re offensive for preaching about Jesus when we are living in a Christian country,” Leeds told Truth Times in an exclusive interview. “We see Christians being persecuted all over the world, but seeing it happen in Great Britain — seeing the disdain, the hatred and now the oppression of Christian voices — really bothers me.”
Recent cases have made headlines. Pastor Dia Moodley was handcuffed and thrown in a cell in Bristol for preaching. Pastor Steve Maile was arrested in Watford under circumstances he strongly denies. In both situations, and others like them, police intervention has sparked national debate about free speech and religious liberty.
Leeds is done watching from the sidelines.
“Having been successful in business, I felt it was only right and appropriate for me to put my hand in my pocket and help these people,” he said. “Where Christians are being unfairly targeted simply for preaching their faith, I’m prepared to put my money behind defending them. They deserve proper legal representation rather than simply being silenced by police officers who sometimes overstep the mark and don’t even understand the law themselves.”
He is blunt about what he sees as a growing double standard in modern Britain.
“No, it’s not fair,” Leeds said when asked why highly sexualised advertising and near-nudity face little scrutiny while a man reading from the Bible can be arrested. “Britain has definitely developed a double standard. We’re a Christian country that’s tolerant of everybody and every religion — apart from, increasingly, Christians themselves.”
Leeds does not blame immigration. He points the finger at Britain’s own institutions.
“Migration is not the problem here. If people are coming into England to work and add value, their religion or faith, quite frankly, is irrelevant. Most people do respect the culture. The pressure is coming from within our own institutions — in interactions with the police, in the constant pandering from some of our leaders, and in this apologetic mentality where we seem to be apologising for being British, apologising for flying an English flag, and apologising for being Christian.”
He is equally clear about the deeper issue: Britain’s relationship with God.
“The only hope for Great Britain now is turning back to God and repenting on its knees,” he has said repeatedly. “God blesses us when we follow His principles in the Bible. When you turn your back on God, take His name in vain and openly mock Jesus Christ, which has become so normal in Britain, you cannot then expect everything to continue prospering without consequences. The wages of sin is death. The UK is in a mess right now. No matter who you vote for, the real answer is that people need to turn back to God.”
Yet Leeds is not purely pessimistic. He sees signs of a quiet revival — rising belief in God among young people and growing church attendance — and he is putting practical action behind his words. Alongside funding legal defence, he has launched efforts to buy churches at risk of being sold off and converted into flats, determined to keep them open for worship and community use.
His message to ordinary Christians is simple and direct:
“Don’t just be angry about what’s happening. Draw closer to God. Stand up for what you believe. Support your church. And do something about it.”
Samuel Leeds is doing something about it. He is writing the cheques so that Christian street preachers are not left alone when the police arrive.
Britain was built on the Christian faith. Leeds is refusing to let that foundation be quietly dismantled without a fight.
