St. Martin de Porres
St. Martin de Porres was born on December 9, 1577 in the city of Lima as a son of a Spanish noble man and a black former slave. He was a lay brother of the Dominican Order. He used to help suffering persons and others in need. Other friars saw Martin suddenly near them without the doors being opened. When an epidemic hit Lima, Martin was seen by others passing through locked doors to care for persons suffering from that epidemic. He was also seen by others in various other places and nations where Martin never went. Once an African slave said that he had known Martin, when Martin came to Africa, to relieve and console many slaves like him. But later the same slave saw Martin in Peru, and asked Martin about his voyage from Africa. After that only the salve came to know that Martin had never left Lima to any other place. In another incident a merchant from Lima went to Mexico and fell ill there. He said loudly "Oh Brother Martin, if only you were here to help me" and suddenly he saw Martin entering his room. But the fact is that Martin never went to Mexico. He died on November 3, 1639.
St. Martin was beatified by pope Gregory-XVI in the year 1837 and canonized by pope John-XXIIIon May 6, 1962. He is considered as a patron of those seeking inter-racial harmony and mixed-race people.
