TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: JOHN 14:1

“Do not be worried and upset,’ Jesus told them. Believe in God and believe also in me.”

Being worried about stuff is a human, knee-jerk reaction for all of us. We all worry about something, whether it is our children’s future, the problems in the country, financial issues, our own health, whatever. We are all born ‘worry warts’.

The thing is, though, that if you believe in the power of God, if you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, you should stop all this useless worrying. Max Lucado says: ‘Do not worry, pray instead’, perhaps we should listen to him.

We need to remember this, worrying about things cannot change them, it is a waste of time and energy and, most important, continuously worrying about every detail of your life can make you physically and mentally ill. Worried people often suffer from severe depression and anxiety, which can inhibit your immune system, making you more susceptible to illness. Phantom muscle pain, headaches, stomach cramps and nausea are all just symptoms of one thing, constant worry.

When you start to worry, consider this question: “How much do you trust God with your life?” I mean, you say you are saved; therefore your life should be safe in the hands of your Saviour, yes? If you worry about everything, it tells others that you do not fully trust God to make good on His promise of keeping you from harm, of caring for you always.

Worry is a lack of trust and faith from looking at the circumstances surrounding the subject of your cares, instead of looking to the Lord.

Here is what the Word has to say about worry:

- You need to relax, worrying about things will simply not help at all. Psalm 127:2: “It is useless to work so hard for a living, getting up early and going to bed late. For the LORD provides for those he loves while they sleep.”

- Jesus taught us in the Sermon on the Mount that He is faithful and that He will supply our daily needs, we need not worry about that at all. Just persist in your prayers, instead of wasting time worrying. Matthew 6:31-34: “So do not start worrying: ‘Where will my food come from? Or my drink? Or my clothes?’ (These are the things the pagans are always concerned about.) Instead, be concerned above everything else with the Kingdom of God and with what he requires of you, and he will provide you with all these other things. So do not worry about tomorrow; it will have enough worries of its own. There is no need to add to the troubles each day brings.”

- Jesus can give peace in the midst of a storm. Matthew 8:26: “Why are you so frightened?’ Jesus answered. ‘How little faith you have!’ Then he got up and ordered the winds and the waves to stop, and there was a great calm.”
Look to the Lord, not the worries. Matthew 14:29-31: “Come!’ answered Jesus. So Peter got out of the boat and started walking on the water to Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he was afraid and started to sink down in the water. ‘Save me Lord! ‘he cried. At once Jesus reached out and grabbed hold of him and said, ‘How little faith you have! Why did you doubt?”

- Do not get so distracted by your worries that you miss the return of our Lord. Luke 21:34: “Be on your guard! Don’t let yourselves become occupied with too much feasting and drinking and with the worries of this life, or that Day may suddenly catch you like a trap. For it will come upon all people everywhere on earth.”

The most important thing you need to remember when your heart threatens to overwhelm with the worries and cares of everyday life is to hold on to God. Stop yourself when your mind turns to worries and start praying instead. It may take some practise, but you will soon find that you are feeling more at peace and greatly comforted by the knowledge that all is taken care of by Someone all powerful.
