People who believe baptism is necessary like to point out that the Apostle Peter told people that they needed to be baptized as part of the process of salvation. Well... salvation isn't a process -- it's a gift given by the grace of God through our faith in Jesus as our only source and our only hope of salvation.
Here's the passage of scripture they use.
Acts 2:37-38 NASB
"Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, โBrothers, what are we to do?โ [38] Peter said to them, โRepent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
You say Peter told people to be baptized for salvation? Well, Peter had forgotten what the ascended Christ had told him. Here's what Jesus said.
Acts 1:4-5 NASB
"Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, โWhich,โ He said, โyou heard of from Me; [5] for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.โ
I'll prove he forgot. Yes, Peter did tell people that, and we see it in Acts 2:38. Acts 2:38 comes after Jesus' instructions recorded in Acts 1:4-5. Read on though. Look at what Peter said in Acts 11:15-16 NASB,
"And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as He did upon us at the beginning. [16] ๐๐ป๐ฑ ๐ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐บ๐ฒ๐บ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฑ the word of the Lord, how He used to say, โJohn baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.โ"
