August 27, 2026 Why You Should Cultivate Excellence in Your Life Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 The greatest accomplishments in life - believe it or not - are made not by the smartest people in the world but by those who didn't know enough to quit. They were the ones who kept trying, kept plodding, kept practicing, who kept investigating until they stumbled onto success. That fact was driven home to me when I was studying in the university. There were two men in my classes who were geniuses. Their IQs were way up there. At the end of a class, they slapped their books shut and generally didn't open them. They were smart. Frankly, I was among those who had to dig it out. People thought I was really gifted; no, I just knew how to work and to study. My parents spent hard earned money and sent me to school to study, not party. I knew why I was there and I made the most of the opportunity. Learning to apply myself was something I happened to grow up with, but everybody didn't have a dad who cut the handles off of brooms, making them short enough for me to use as a kid, or has you work alongside him. But you can learn to work. You can develop discipline yourself. You can set goals and eventually reach them. One of my heroes was Sir Edmund Hillary, who along with his Sherpa guide, Tensing, crested Mount Everest for the first time. Awesome achievement, and that before a lot of high-tech gear which climbers use today. When asked how he accomplished this when others had failed, he replied that when he was tempted to turn back, he took just one more step. William Carey, the father of modern missions, said that his greatest ability was to plod in the face of adversity. When Thomas Edison had tried 10,000 ways to produce an incandescent globe and hadn't succeeded, he was urged to quit. He responded that he had found 10,000 ways that wouldn't work. And he would eventually find one that did. He did! I've sometimes wondered how many determined, stubborn individuals we have today with that same tenacity. The foundation of our modern achievements was laid by thousands of unknown individuals who lived in obscurity and died unknown, who faithfully contributed to what has enabled us to send men to the moon, to circle the globe with communication, and to accomplish great and mighty things through technology and science. They laid the foundation; we have built upon their research, hard work, and trial and error. Their strength and energy, like a gradually falling barometer, were meted out in hard work, years of often-unrecognized service, and yes, blood, sweat and tears. But they did not quit. They did not look for something with less work and more money attached to it. I've been told that in an European Cathedral, high in the rafters where no one ever goes, are some intricate carvings of exquisite beauty, done by a master craftsman whose name has long since been lost to posterity. Why did he take time to do some of his finest work, using an abutment of wood that will never be seen by the public? He valued excellence. He took seriously the admonition of the Bible that instructs: "Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom" (Ecclesiastes 9:10). Cultivate excellence. Make it a passion. Refuse to let the world and our culture shove you into the mold of mediocrity. Thank God for teachers who inspire excellence, for mothers who have the patience to bring the best out of their children, for dads who have the patience to teach a little boy how to do something. The Story Behind the Hymns. THE STORY BEHIND "O JESUS, I HAVE PROMISED" “O Jesus, I Have Promised” was written by English hymn writer John Ernest Bode (1816–1874), an Anglican clergyman and scholar. Bode wrote the hymn in 1868 for the confirmation service of his own children at Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire, England. The hymn grew out of a deeply personal moment. Bode’s children were publicly affirming their Christian faith and promising to remain faithful to Christ. He wrote the words to express the seriousness of that commitment, not simply as a promise made during confirmation, but as a lifelong decision to follow Jesus. The opening words, “O Jesus, I have promised to serve Thee to the end,” immediately establish the hymn’s central message: faithful Christian service. The following verses recognise that keeping such a promise is not always easy. Temptations, distractions and the pressures of life can weaken a believer, which is why the hymn repeatedly turns to Jesus for strength and guidance. Its most familiar lines include the prayer: “ O Jesus, Thou hast promised To all who follow Thee, That where Thou art in glory, There shall Thy servant be.” The hymn became widely known in churches and schools and has remained a beloved hymn of commitment, especially at confirmation services, because of its direct and personal language. “O Jesus, I Have Promised” continues to speak across generations because its message is simple but demanding: to follow Christ faithfully, to resist the distractions of the world, and to depend on Him for the strength to remain true to the promise.

WHAT GOD DOES REMAINS 📖 Ecclesiastes 3:14 "I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him." Ecclesiastes reflects on God's works and the limitations of humankind. God acts according to His wisdom and purpose, while humanity has no control over time or circumstances. What God establishes does not need human striving to endure. God's work possesses a solidity that time can never destroy. We sometimes want to add to, correct, or hasten what God is doing. Yet, faith also knows how to wait and let God complete His work. At that moment, the promise is reassuring: if God is truly the originator of something, time will not undo it. Don't rush what God is building. Do your part faithfully, then let God do His. Focus less on controlling the results and more on walking in His will. May the Lord teach us to trust in His work. We may have plans, responsibilities, businesses, families, and challenges ahead, but we don't have to carry everything by our own strength. Before you begin today, place your plans in God's hands. Ask Him for wisdom, direction, protection, and strength. Sometimes God may not give us exactly what we planned, but He can lead us toward something better than what we could see for ourselves. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Devotional message: Yesterday, we saw that Jesus desires us to be yoked with Him so that He can order our steps and ensure that we walk on the path of light. Today, we continue by looking at another reason we must remain yoked with Christ: He desires to direct our lives. The Bible warns us against leaning on our own understanding because our own wisdom and direction can lead us away from God's will. True and lasting fulfillment is found when we allow God to direct our paths. When we are yoked with Christ, we surrender our will, plans, decisions, and ambitions to Him. We no longer insist on going where we want to go; instead, we learn to follow where He leads. His Word becomes our final authority, and the Holy Spirit becomes our guide. It is through this relationship with Christ that we begin to discover and fulfil our God-given purpose. God created each of us intentionally, and He has assignments prepared for us. However, we cannot fulfil those assignments by depending solely on our own wisdom, strength, or abilities. As we conform to the image of Christ, we become better equipped to represent Him and function according to His purposes. The closer we walk with Him, the clearer His direction becomes. Therefore, ask yourself today: Am I fulfilling what God created me to do? Am I walking according to His Word and submitting to the leading of the Holy Spirit, or am I directing my own life?If you are already walking in God's purpose, continue faithfully. But if you have discovered that you have been walking according to your own plans, return to Christ and allow Him to order your steps.For the believer, the answer is to yoke yourself more deeply with Christ. For the unbeliever, the first step is to receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour and begin a life of surrender to Him. Do not merely come to Jesus for rest; walk with Him under His yoke. Let Him direct your decisions, relationships, career, ministry, business, and every area of your life. Thursday, 27th August, 2026 TITLE: "FAITHFUL IN LITTLE, TRUSTED WITH MUCH" ANCHOR SCRIPTURE(S) Luke 16:10 (KJV) "He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much." Psalm 75:6–7 (KJV) "For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another." QUOTE TO REFLECT ON "Faithfulness in small things prepares you for greater things." DAY'S REFLECTION Many people desire great opportunities, promotion, influence, wealth, and recognition. But God's Word teaches us that greatness is often preceded by faithfulness in small things. Jesus says in Luke 16:10, "He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much." The word "faithful" means dependable, trustworthy, loyal, and consistent. "That which is least" refers to things that may appear small, ordinary, or insignificant in our eyes. God watches how we handle what we have before giving us responsibility for what we desire. A person who is careless with small responsibilities may also become careless when entrusted with greater ones. Sometimes people think, "When I get a better job, I will work harder," or "When God gives me more money, I will become generous." But biblical principles teach the opposite: be faithful now with what you already have. Be faithful with your time. Be faithful with your work. Be faithful with your relationships. Be faithful with money. Be faithful in serving God. Be faithful even when nobody is watching. Psalm 75:6–7 reminds us that promotion ultimately comes from God. The psalmist says that promotion does not come simply from geographical directions or human sources, but "God is the judge." He has the authority to "putteth down" one and "setteth up" another. This does not mean that effort, preparation, excellence, or wise relationships are unnecessary. Rather, it reminds us that human connections cannot replace God's sovereignty. We should work diligently while trusting God with the outcome. Life experience teaches us that small responsibilities often reveal a person's true character. Someone who cannot be trusted with a small assignment will struggle when given a greater one. Conversely, consistent faithfulness builds a reputation for reliability and prepares a person for greater responsibility. Therefore, do not despise your present season because it seems small. Your current assignment may be God's training ground for your future. If you are serving in a small capacity, serve faithfully. If your business is still growing, work honestly. If your opportunity seems insignificant, give it your best. If recognition has not yet come, continue doing what is right. God sees your faithfulness. Your responsibility is to be faithful; God's responsibility is to determine the time and manner of promotion.
