Walking in Step with the Holy Spirit

Acts chapter 15 records the Jerusalem Council, where the apostles and church leaders gathered to resolve an important question concerning Gentile believers. Rather than allowing division or personal opinions to guide their decision, they sought the Lord together. After careful discussion, prayer, and the testimony of God's work among the Gentiles, they concluded that the Holy Spirit had made His will clear.

Their statement, "It seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us," reveals the importance of seeking God's direction before making decisions. The leaders did not rely solely on human wisdom. They desired to align their hearts with what God was already doing. Their decision protected the truth of the gospel while encouraging unity within the growing church.

This verse reminds us that God desires to lead His people today through His Word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. While we may face difficult choices, we can confidently seek His wisdom through prayer, Scripture, and godly counsel. When our hearts are surrendered to Him, He faithfully directs our paths.

For believers today, this passage encourages us to pursue unity, humility, and dependence on God rather than insisting on our own preferences. A life led by the Holy Spirit produces peace, wisdom, and obedience that honors Christ.

    Reflection Questions

    1. Do I seek God's direction before making important decisions?

    2. Am I willing to submit my plans to the leading of the Holy Spirit?

    3. How can I promote unity while remaining faithful to God's truth?

    Prayer

Lord God, thank You for giving Your Holy Spirit to guide Your people. Help me to seek Your wisdom above my own understanding and to walk in obedience to Your Word. Give me a humble heart that desires Your will in every decision. In Jesus name Amen.

    Practical Application

    ● Spend time in prayer before making important decisions.

    ● Study God's Word for wisdom and direction.

    ● Seek to encourage unity while remaining faithful to biblical truth.

    Takeaway Thought

When we seek God's guidance, the Holy Spirit leads us in wisdom, truth, and peace.

  • Manipulation Through Prophecy: Testing Every Spirit

“Do Not Believe Every Spirit, But Test the Spirits…” — 1 John 4:1
Have you ever wondered why something can sound spiritual, use Scripture, and even appear prophetic—yet still lead people away from truth, freedom, and intimacy with God?

The Bible reveals that the spiritual realm is real, but it also warns us that not every spiritual voice comes from God. The enemy does not always come with obvious darkness; sometimes deception comes disguised as light, using spiritual language, emotions, and even prophetic expressions.

A mature believer is not someone who accepts every word spoken in the name of God. A mature believer is someone who knows how to discern, test, and align every voice with the character and Word of God.

    1. Prophecy Is a Gift, But It Must Be Tested
Prophecy is one of the beautiful ways God communicates encouragement, direction, correction, and revelation to His people.
“Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”
    — 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21
    Notice the balance:
God says do not despise prophecy, but He also says prove all things.
    Why?

Because the existence of a spiritual gift does not remove the need for spiritual discernment.

A person can have a gift but still have wrong motives. A person can speak something accurate but still use it for control. A person can mention God’s name while seeking personal influence.
    The question is not only:
    "Is this supernatural?"
    The deeper question is:
"Does this produce the nature, character, and purpose of Christ?"

    2. Manipulation Uses Fear Instead of Faith
One of the clearest signs of manipulation through prophecy is when people are controlled through fear.
God may warn, correct, and prepare His people, but He does not enslave them.

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
    — 2 Timothy 1:7

    Manipulative prophecy often sounds like:
“If you do not obey me, disaster will happen.”
“God told me you must follow my personal instruction.”
“You cannot hear God unless you come through me.”
This replaces the Holy Spirit’s guidance with human dependence.
True spiritual leadership points people toward God. False spiritual control makes people dependent on a person.
The Holy Spirit leads believers into truth, not bondage.

    3. God’s Voice Produces Freedom, Not Spiritual Captivity
    Jesus said:
“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
    — John 8:32

A genuine word from God may challenge you, but it will also bring you closer to God.
    It will produce:
    Humility
    Repentance
    Faith
    Wisdom
    Greater love for Christ
    But manipulation produces:
    Fear of man
    Confusion
    Dependency on personalities
Loss of personal relationship with God
    Ask yourself:
“Is this prophetic word helping me trust God more, or is it making me afraid to move without a person’s approval?”

    4. Test the Spirit Behind the Message
The Bible gives us a command:
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God…”
    — 1 John 4:1
    Testing the spirit means examining:
    1. Does it agree with Scripture?
God will never contradict His written Word.
    2. Does it reveal Christ or glorify a person?
The Holy Spirit always points people to Jesus.
“He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.”
    — John 16:14
    3. Does it produce spiritual maturity?
God desires sons and daughters who grow in wisdom, not followers who cannot discern.

    5. Do Not Exchange Discernment for Excitement
Many people are attracted to spiritual experiences, dramatic words, and supernatural encounters.
But spiritual maturity is not measured by how many revelations we hear.

It is measured by how deeply we walk with God.
“But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”

    — Hebrews 5:14
A believer who lacks discernment can be impressed by anything spiritual.

    But a mature believer asks:
“Does this carry the heart of God?”
    “Does this align with Scripture?”
“Does this produce love, truth, and holiness?”
    6. Never Let a Prophetic Word Replace Your Relationship With God
Prophecy is a gift, but God Himself is the source.

A prophetic word should confirm what God is doing, not replace your prayer life, Scripture, and personal relationship with Him.
The danger begins when people seek voices more than they seek God.

When people chase predictions more than transformation.
When they desire revelation more than obedience.
God did not call us to become addicted to words; He called us to become rooted in Him.

    A Prayer for Discernment
Father, give us spiritual wisdom and discernment. Teach us to recognize Your voice above every other voice. Remove every deception, every manipulation, and every false influence that pulls us away from Your truth.

Help us love prophecy while testing every word. Give us humility to receive correction and courage to reject anything that does not reflect Your heart.

May our eyes be opened, our spirits become sensitive, and our lives remain anchored in Jesus Christ.
    In Jesus’ name, Amen.

    Final Reflection
The greatest protection against deception is not suspicion—it is intimacy with God.
A person who knows the Shepherd’s voice will recognize the voices that do not belong to Him.
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”
    — John 10:27

    Question for Reflection:
Are you following God’s voice, or have you unknowingly allowed another voice to become louder than His?

  • NOT EVERYTHING SPIRITUAL IS FROM GOD

In today’s world, many people assume that anything that appears “spiritual” must automatically come from God.

But the Bible clearly warns us otherwise. Spiritual activity does not equal divine approval.

There are multiple spiritual sources, and not all originate from God.

As believers, one of the most critical skills we must develop is discernment—the ability to distinguish between what is truly from God and what is not.

1 John 4:1 – “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God…”

2 Corinthians 11:14 – “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.”

Matthew 24:24 – “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets…”

    1. THERE ARE DIFFERENT SOURCES OF SPIRITUAL POWER

Not everything supernatural is divine. The Bible reveals three primary spiritual sources:

    a. God (The Holy Spirit)
John 14:26 – The Holy Spirit teaches truth

Brings peace, clarity, holiness, and alignment with God’s Word

    b. Satan and Demonic Forces
Ephesians 6:12 – We wrestle against spiritual wickedness

Can perform signs and wonders to deceive.

    c. Human Spirit / Flesh
Jeremiah 17:9 – The heart can be deceitful

Some “spiritual experiences” come from emotions, imagination, or pride

Just because something feels powerful, emotional, or mysterious does not mean it is from God.

    2. SATAN CAN IMITATE GOD

2 Corinthians 11:14 – Satan appears as an angel of light

    Exodus 7:10–12 – Pharaoh’s magicians replicated miracles

The enemy does not always come in a scary form—he often comes looking holy, wise, and convincing.

    Examples of imitation:

    - False prophecies

    - Fake miracles

    - Misleading visions and dreams

    Warning:
If Satan came as darkness, nobody would follow him. He comes disguised as light.

    3. SIGNS AND WONDERS ARE NOT ALWAYS PROOF OF GOD

Matthew 7:22–23 – “Did we not prophesy in your name…?”

Matthew 24:24 – False prophets will show great signs

Miracles alone are not enough to validate a ministry or message.

God is not just in power—He is in truth and holiness.

    4. TEST EVERY SPIRIT

1 John 4:1 – “Try the spirits whether they are of God”

You are not called to accept everything—you are called to test everything.

How to test what is spiritual:

    a. Does it align with the Word of God?

Isaiah 8:20 – If it does not speak according to the Word, there is no light in it

    b. Does it glorify Jesus Christ?

John 16:14 – The Holy Spirit glorifies Christ

    c. What fruit does it produce?

Galatians 5:22–23 – Love, peace, holiness

    d. Does it bring confusion or peace?

1 Corinthians 14:33 – God is not the author of confusion

    5. DANGERS OF FOLLOWING FALSE SPIRITUAL THINGS

    a. Spiritual deception
You can think you are right while heading in the wrong direction

    b. Bondage

What looks spiritual can enslave your life

    c. Separation from God

False spirituality distances you from truth

2 Thessalonians 2:10–11 – Strong delusion comes to those who reject truth

    6. WHY MANY PEOPLE ARE DECEIVED

    a. Lack of knowledge
Hosea 4:6 – My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge

    b. Desire for power instead of God
Some seek miracles more than the God of miracles

    c. Ignoring the Holy Spirit’s warning
The Spirit often warns quietly, but many ignore Him

    7. HOW TO STAY SAFE

    a. Stay rooted in the Word
    The Word is your standard

    b. Develop spiritual discernment
Hebrews 5:14 – Mature believers discern good and evil

    c. Maintain a close relationship with God
The closer you are to God, the easier it is to detect error

    d. Be humble and teachable
    Pride blinds, humility protects

    CONCLUSION

Beloved, not everything spiritual is from God. In these last days, deception will increase, and only those who are grounded in truth will stand.

Do not be moved by appearance, power, or popularity—be moved by truth.

    Test every spirit

    Hold onto the Word

    Follow the Holy Spirit

    Final Scripture:

John 10:27 – “My sheep hear my voice… and they follow me.”

    PRAYER POINTS
Lord, give me the spirit of discernment

Deliver me from every form of deception

Help me to know Your voice clearly

Let Your truth guide my life always

  • How God Speaks to His People

God is not silent. From the beginning of creation, God has always communicated with His people.

Many believers often ask, “Does God still speak today?” The answer is Yes. God still speaks, but we must understand how He communicates and develop the spiritual sensitivity to hear Him.

The Bible confirms this in Job 33:14:
"For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not."

This means God speaks in different ways, but many people fail to recognize His voice.

    1. God Speaks Through His Word (The Bible)

The primary way God speaks to His people is through Scripture. The Bible is God's written voice to humanity.

    In 2 Timothy 3:16–17:
"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness."

Whenever you read the Bible, God is speaking directly to you. His Word provides guidance, correction, encouragement, and direction for life.

    Example:
When someone is confused about what to do, a Bible verse may suddenly become clear and speak directly to their situation.

    2. God Speaks Through the Holy Spirit

God also speaks through the Holy Spirit, who lives inside believers.

    In John 16:13:
"Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth."

    The Holy Spirit communicates through:

    Inner conviction

    Spiritual prompting

Peace or unrest in your spirit

Sometimes you may feel strongly that something is right or wrong — that can be the Holy Spirit guiding you.

    3. God Speaks Through Dreams and Visions

Another biblical way God communicates is through dreams and visions.

    In Joel 2:28:
"Your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions."

Throughout the Bible, God used dreams to communicate with His people.

    Examples include:

Joseph received prophetic dreams (Genesis 37).

    Daniel interpreted dreams and visions.

Joseph was warned in a dream to protect baby Jesus.

However, dreams must always be tested with the Word of God.

    4. God Speaks Through His Servants (Prophets and Ministers)

God often speaks through anointed servants, such as prophets, pastors, and teachers.

    In Amos 3:7:
"Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets."

    Examples in the Bible include:

    Nathan who corrected David

    Samuel who guided kings

    Elijah who delivered God's message

God still uses ministers today to deliver messages that bring direction, warning, and encouragement.

    5. God Speaks Through Circumstances

Sometimes God speaks through life situations and open or closed doors.

    In Revelation 3:7:
"What he opens no man can shut, and what he shuts no man can open."

    For example:

A door of opportunity may open unexpectedly.

A plan may fail repeatedly because God is redirecting you.

Circumstances can sometimes be God's way of guiding your steps.

    6. God Speaks Through a Still Small Voice

God may speak quietly within the heart.

    In 1 Kings 19:12:
God spoke to Elijah through a still small voice, not through wind, earthquake, or fire.

This teaches that God’s voice is often gentle and quiet, and we must learn to be spiritually sensitive.

    7. God Speaks Through Wise Counsel

God can also speak through godly advice from mature believers.

    In Proverbs 11:14:
"In the multitude of counsellors there is safety."

Sometimes the answer you are praying for may come through a wise person God places in your life.

    How to Hear God Clearly

Live a life of prayer – Prayer opens your spirit to hear God.

Study the Bible regularly – The more you know God's Word, the easier it is to recognize His voice.

Stay away from sin – Sin can block spiritual sensitivity.

Be spiritually quiet – Many people cannot hear God because their lives are too noisy.

Test every message with Scripture – God never contradicts His Word.

    Conclusion

God is still speaking today. The real question is not whether God speaks, but whether we are listening.

Just like young Samuel said in 1 Samuel 3:10:
"Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth."

May our hearts always be open to hear the voice of God.

How God Speaks to His People God is not silent. From the beginning of creation, God has always communicated with His people. Many believers often ask, “Does God still speak today?” The answer is Yes. God still speaks, but we must understand how He communicates and develop the spiritual sensitivity to hear Him. The Bible confirms this in Job 33:14: "For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not." This means God speaks in different ways, but many people fail to recognize His voice. 1. God Speaks Through His Word (The Bible) The primary way God speaks to His people is through Scripture. The Bible is God's written voice to humanity. In 2 Timothy 3:16–17: "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." Whenever you read the Bible, God is speaking directly to you. His Word provides guidance, correction, encouragement, and direction for life. Example: When someone is confused about what to do, a Bible verse may suddenly become clear and speak directly to their situation. 2. God Speaks Through the Holy Spirit God also speaks through the Holy Spirit, who lives inside believers. In John 16:13: "Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth." The Holy Spirit communicates through: Inner conviction Spiritual prompting Peace or unrest in your spirit Sometimes you may feel strongly that something is right or wrong — that can be the Holy Spirit guiding you. 3. God Speaks Through Dreams and Visions Another biblical way God communicates is through dreams and visions. In Joel 2:28: "Your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions." Throughout the Bible, God used dreams to communicate with His people. Examples include: Joseph received prophetic dreams (Genesis 37). Daniel interpreted dreams and visions. Joseph was warned in a dream to protect baby Jesus. However, dreams must always be tested with the Word of God. 4. God Speaks Through His Servants (Prophets and Ministers) God often speaks through anointed servants, such as prophets, pastors, and teachers. In Amos 3:7: "Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets." Examples in the Bible include: Nathan who corrected David Samuel who guided kings Elijah who delivered God's message God still uses ministers today to deliver messages that bring direction, warning, and encouragement. 5. Scripture:
“It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.”
    — Psalm 118:8 (KJV)

Devotional Message: Trust Wisely, Love Fully
God calls us to walk in love—but He also calls us to walk in wisdom. Not everyone close to you is safe. Not everyone far from you is a threat. Trust is sacred, and misplacing it can lead to wounds, delays, or destruction.

Even Jesus was betrayed by someone He loved. He didn't stop loving—but He never stopped discerning. His full trust was always in the Father.

God may use former enemies to bless or sharpen you. Paul was once a persecutor of the Church—but God used him mightily. So while we are called to love all, we must not lean blindly on any.

You are called to wise relationships—guided by the Holy Spirit, not by emotions or familiarity.

Are you placing your trust where God didn’t assign it?
Are you wise in who you confide in and build with?
Are you still carrying the hurt of misplaced trust?

Discernment doesn’t mean fear or suspicion. It means letting God lead your heart—so your relationships build you, not break you.

    Today’s Reminder:
Love is a command—but trust is earned.
Let the Spirit guide your relationships.
Be kind to all—but anchored in God alone.

    Prayer Point:
Lord, help me to love everyone like You do—but trust only as You lead.
Heal every place in me wounded by misplaced trust.
Give me discernment for the people in my life—friends, enemies, or both.
Make me wise, gentle, and anchored in You. Amen.

    🗣 Declaration of Faith:
I am led by the Spirit in my relationships.
I love fully, but I trust wisely.
I am not naive—I am discerning.
God is my confidence, and He orders my connections.
