  • Daily Devotion — June 27 | Acts 4:13 (NKJV)

    The Difference Jesus Makes

Acts 4:13 takes place as Peter and John stood before the Jewish rulers and religious leaders after the healing of the lame man. These leaders expected to intimidate the apostles, yet they were astonished by what they witnessed. Peter and John spoke with remarkable confidence, wisdom, and courage despite being regarded as ordinary men without formal religious training.

The religious leaders could not deny the evidence before them. Something had changed these men. The same disciples who had once struggled with fear were now boldly proclaiming the truth of Jesus Christ. Their transformation was so evident that the leaders reached a simple conclusion: they had been with Jesus.

This verse reminds us that God often works through ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary purposes. The effectiveness of Peter and John did not come from academic credentials, social status, or personal influence. It came from their relationship with Christ and the empowering work of the Holy Spirit.

Believers today can sometimes feel inadequate when comparing themselves to others. We may think we lack the knowledge, experience, or abilities needed to serve God effectively. Yet Acts 4:13 teaches that what matters most is not who we are apart from Christ, but who we become through Him. Time spent with Jesus changes our character, strengthens our faith, and equips us for the work He calls us to do.

The world should be able to see evidence of Christ in our lives. Our words, attitudes, actions, and responses to challenges should reflect His presence within us. Like Peter and John, our greatest testimony may simply be that others recognize we have been with Jesus.

    Reflection Questions

    1. Would others recognize evidence that I have been spending time with Jesus?

    2. Am I relying on my own abilities or on God's power to serve Him?

    3. How can I grow deeper in my relationship with Christ each day?

    Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for using ordinary people for Your extraordinary purposes. Help me to spend time in Your presence and grow in my relationship with Jesus. Fill me with courage, wisdom, and faith so that my life reflects Your character. May others see Christ in me and be drawn closer to You. In Jesus name Amen.

    Practical Application

    ● Set aside intentional time today for prayer and reading God's Word.

    ● Trust God to use you even in areas where you feel inadequate.

    ● Look for opportunities to demonstrate Christ's love through your actions and conversations.

    Takeaway Thought

The greatest qualification for serving God is a life that has been transformed by spending time with Jesus.

  • Saint of the Day — Saturday, June 27, 2026

    Saint Cyril of Alexandria
Defender of the Faith • Doctor of the Incarnation

"The Word became flesh and dwelt among us." — John 1:14

    Some saints built hospitals.

    Some founded religious orders.

    Some crossed oceans as missionaries.

Saint Cyril of Alexandria defended something just as essential: the truth about who Jesus Christ truly is.

Because if we misunderstand Jesus, we misunderstand salvation itself.

Born around AD 376 in Alexandria, Egypt, Cyril grew up in one of the greatest centers of learning in the ancient world. Gifted with a brilliant mind and a profound love for Sacred Scripture, he eventually became Archbishop of Alexandria, one of the most influential sees in the early Church.

    His episcopate was not easy.

The Church of his day was marked by intense theological disputes and political tensions. Yet amid these controversies, one question stood above all others:

    Who is Jesus Christ?

In the early fifth century, Nestorius, Patriarch of Constantinople, began teaching that Mary should not be called Theotokos ("Mother of God"). He argued that Mary gave birth only to the human Jesus, not to the eternal Son of God.

At first glance, this seemed reasonable.

But Cyril immediately recognized the danger.

If Jesus is divided into two separate persons—one human and one divine—then God did not truly become man.

And if God did not truly become man, humanity cannot truly be redeemed.

Cyril understood that the very heart of Christianity was at stake.

With courage, theological brilliance, and unwavering conviction, he defended the Church's faith that Jesus Christ is one Divine Person with two natures—fully God and fully man.

The Child born of Mary is none other than the eternal Son of God made flesh.

Therefore, Mary can rightly be called Mother of God, not because she created Christ's divinity, but because the One she bore is truly God incarnate.

At the great Council of Ephesus in AD 431, Cyril's teaching was solemnly affirmed by the universal Church.

    The faithful rejoiced.

The mystery of the Incarnation was preserved.

The truth that God truly entered human history remained intact.

Cyril was not a flawless man. Historical records reveal a personality that could sometimes be forceful and uncompromising. Yet his passionate defense of Christ flowed from love—love for truth, love for souls, and love for the Savior.

He dedicated his life to preaching, writing, teaching, and protecting the flock entrusted to him.

His writings on the Eucharist, the Trinity, Scripture, and the Person of Christ remain treasures of Catholic theology even today.

For his immense contribution to Christian doctrine, the Church later proclaimed him a Doctor of the Church, honoring him with the title:

    Doctor of the Incarnation.

    A Life Transformed

Saint Cyril allowed his love for Jesus to shape every aspect of his life. He understood that theology is not merely intellectual study—it is the loving contemplation of God. His scholarship became service. His learning became worship.

    Why He Became a Saint

Saint Cyril is honored because he faithfully preserved the truth that Jesus Christ is both fully God and fully man. By defending this truth, he safeguarded the very foundation of our salvation.

    What He Teaches Us

Saint Cyril reminds us that truth matters.

What we believe about Jesus shapes everything.

Christian faith is not built on ideas or philosophies, but on a Person: Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God made flesh for our salvation.

The closer we come to Jesus, the closer we come to God Himself.

    Scripture

"And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father's only Son, full of grace and truth." — John 1:14

    Prayer

Saint Cyril of Alexandria, faithful defender of the Incarnation, pray for us. Help us to know Jesus Christ more deeply, to love Him more completely, and to remain faithful to the truth handed down by the Church. Intercede for theologians, teachers, catechists, and all who proclaim the Gospel, that they may always teach the truth with charity and courage. Amen.

    Intercession

Saint Cyril of Alexandria, Doctor of the Church, pray for all bishops, theologians, catechists, and those entrusted with teaching the Catholic faith.

    Truth for Today

Knowing Jesus truly is the foundation of every other truth.

    Truths to Remember

    • Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man.
    • The Incarnation lies at the heart of our salvation.
    • Sound doctrine protects souls.
    • Truth and charity must always walk together.
    • Defending the faith is an act of love.

    Reflection

Who is Jesus for you personally? Is He merely someone you know about, or someone you truly know and follow?
