The Mice in the Piano Pastor Joseph Clark August 12, 2026 “He who denies the existence of God, has some reason for wishing that God did not exist.” —Saint Augustine “Whoever acknowledges Me before others, I will also acknowledge before My Father in heaven. But whoever disowns Me before others, I will disown before My Father in heaven.” —Matthew 10:32–33 The Mice in the Piano Once upon a time, there were two little mice. They were brothers, and they had lived their entire lives inside a piano. It was the only world they had ever known. Their parents and siblings had died of old age, leaving the two brothers as the last members of their family. They spent their days exploring their strange little world and listening in wonder to the beautiful music that constantly filled the piano. They could not see where the music came from. Their parents had taught them that the music was produced by a great and mysterious being who lived beyond their understanding—the one who played the piano. The two mice loved to think about this great player. They talked about him, wondered about him, and delighted in the beautiful music he produced. Then, one day, one of the mice went exploring. When he returned, he was thoughtful and unusually serious. “There is no great player,” he told his brother. “It is all a myth. I have seen the inside of this piano. The music is produced by wires, hammers, strings, and mechanisms. I have seen them with my own eyes!” The brothers abandoned their belief in the great player. They were convinced that they had finally discovered the truth. They understood the mechanisms of the piano, and therefore they believed they had explained away the musician. They examined the wires, hammers, strings, and mechanical workings repeatedly. The more they learned about how the piano worked, the more confident they became that there was no need to believe in a player. But they had overlooked something very important. Knowing how the piano works does not explain who is playing it. And so, while the two mice congratulated themselves on their newfound wisdom, the great player continued to play. The mice simply could not see him. The Limits of Human Understanding There is an important lesson in this little story. Human beings are intelligent. We have learned extraordinary things about the universe. We have explored the depths of the oceans, walked on the moon, examined the microscopic world, mapped the human genome, and discovered astonishing laws governing the physical universe. But our ability to understand something does not mean that we understand everything. The Bible repeatedly reminds us that humility is essential when approaching God. Jesus said: “Unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” —Matthew 18:3 He also said: “Let the little children come to Me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” —Matthew 19:14 And again: “Whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” —Luke 18:17 Jesus is not telling us to abandon reason or become intellectually childish. Rather, He is calling us to humility, trust, and dependence upon God. Scripture says: “Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” —Matthew 18:4 The Christian life begins with recognizing that God is God—and we are not. “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.” —Ephesians 2:8 And: “The righteous shall live by faith.” —Romans 1:17 Faith is not a rejection of reason. Faith recognizes that human reason has limits. Living in a Skeptical Age In 1897, Francis Pharcellus Church wrote his famous response to eight-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon concerning her question about Santa Claus. Church observed that people can become skeptical of anything they cannot see or fully comprehend. Although Church was writing about Santa Claus—not God—the broader observation is worth considering. We live in an age that often treats what can be measured as though it were the only thing that can be real. But there are many things we accept as real without seeing them directly. We cannot see gravity. We cannot see thoughts. We cannot see love. We cannot see electricity itself. Yet we observe their effects. Likewise, Christians believe that although God cannot be placed under a microscope or reduced to a laboratory experiment, His existence can be considered through the evidence of creation, reason, morality, human consciousness, history, and ultimately the revelation of Jesus Christ. The fact that we cannot see God with our physical eyes does not prove that God does not exist. The mice could not see the piano player either. That did not mean he wasn't there. When People Mock Our Faith A close friend of mine, an Archbishop, once told me a humorous story from his childhood. He had been at a park with his mother when he ran over excitedly and told her that the sun was actually a star and that the stars in the sky were also suns. His mother, apparently overwhelmed by the complexity of the information, responded with a blunt declaration that, in essence, the sun was the sun and the stars were the stars—and that was the end of the discussion! Sometimes we can become uncomfortable when someone challenges what we believe. That is particularly true when people we respect dismiss Christianity as foolishness. Richard Dawkins, Woody Allen, Isaac Asimov, Mark Twain, Carl Sagan, and many others have expressed skepticism toward Christianity or belief in God. But Christians should not respond with anger or hatred. We should respond with grace. Forgive them. Pray for them. Love them. And share the Gospel with them. The Apostle Peter instructed Christians: “Always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks you for the reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.” —1 Peter 3:15 That is an important distinction. We are called to defend the faith, but we are not called to be quarrelsome. Jesus said: “If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.” —Matthew 10:14 And He warned: “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls before swine.” —Matthew 7:6 There comes a time when we must recognize that arguing louder will not make someone believe. Our responsibility is to faithfully proclaim Christ. The Holy Spirit is responsible for changing hearts. What About Suffering? One of the most common objections to belief in God is the existence of suffering. People ask: “How can I believe in a loving God when there is so much suffering in the world?” This is a serious question, and Christians should never dismiss it with a shallow answer. The Bible itself contains people crying out to God in the midst of suffering. Job asked difficult questions. David cried out in the Psalms. Even Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus. Christianity does not pretend that suffering is imaginary. Instead, Christianity tells us that suffering exists in a fallen world and that God entered that suffering Himself through Jesus Christ. The cross is Christianity's answer to the claim that God is indifferent to human suffering. God did not remain distant from our pain. He entered our world. He suffered. He died. And He rose again. The Apostle Paul writes: “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” —Romans 8:18 C.S. Lewis famously described pain as God's “megaphone” to a deaf world. Suffering does not prove that God does not exist. For many people, suffering instead becomes the very circumstance that drives them to ask the deepest questions about meaning, morality, mortality, and God. What About Hell? Another question frequently asked is: “How can a loving God send people to Hell?” The Christian answer begins with the extraordinary love of God. Jesus said: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” —John 3:16 God offers salvation freely through Christ. The Gospel is not a message that God delights in condemning people. It is a message that God has provided a way of salvation. Jesus came to seek and save the lost. The seriousness of judgment is precisely what makes the offer of salvation so important. God does not force anyone to love Him. The Gospel calls us to repent, believe, and receive the grace of God. Faith and the Evidence of Creation The universe raises enormous questions. Why is there something rather than nothing? Why does the universe possess order? Why are the laws of nature intelligible? Why does human consciousness exist? Why do human beings possess an awareness of moral obligation? Science can investigate how many things work. But questions concerning ultimate meaning and purpose extend beyond the laboratory. The Christian does not believe that science is the enemy of faith. Quite the opposite. The universe is intelligible because Christians believe it was created by an intelligent God. The laws of nature can be investigated because Christians believe those laws reflect an ordered creation. The human capacity to reason can be used to explore the universe because Christians believe human beings were created by God. Science can tell us much about the mechanisms of the piano. But science alone cannot answer the question: Who is playing the music? Believers in the Scientific Community Christianity has never belonged exclusively to the uneducated or uninformed. Throughout history, many highly accomplished scientists have believed in God. Among them are figures such as: Isaac Newton, whose work transformed physics and mathematics. James Clerk Maxwell, one of the great figures in electromagnetic theory. Gregor Mendel, whose experiments established foundational principles of genetics and who was also an Augustinian friar. Georges Lemaître, a Catholic priest and physicist whose work on an expanding universe helped establish the foundation of what became known as Big Bang cosmology. Francis Collins, physician-geneticist and former director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, who has publicly identified as a Christian. Charles Townes, Nobel Prize-winning physicist and inventor of the maser and co-inventor of the laser, who was an openly religious Christian. These examples do not prove Christianity simply because these scientists believed. But they do demonstrate something important: Faith in God is not incompatible with intellectual achievement. A person does not have to abandon intelligence in order to believe in God. Nor does becoming a Christian require someone to stop asking questions. Christians should welcome honest questions. The Problem With the Piano Mice The two mice made a fundamental mistake. They confused an explanation of the mechanism with an explanation of the ultimate cause. They discovered the wires. They discovered the hammers. They discovered the strings. They discovered the machinery. And then they concluded: “Therefore, there is no piano player.” But that conclusion did not logically follow from their discovery. In fact, their discovery of the piano's complexity could have led them to ask an entirely different question: Who designed this? And that is the question we must ultimately ask about our universe. Where did everything come from? Why is there something rather than nothing? Why does the universe operate according to discoverable laws? Why does consciousness exist? Why do we have an innate sense that some things are genuinely right and others genuinely wrong? And perhaps the greatest question of all: Who are we, and why are we here? The Christian answer is that we are creatures made by our Creator. We are not accidents without purpose. We were created by God, for God, and ultimately for relationship with Him. We Are the Mice There is another lesson in the story that we must not miss. Perhaps the greatest danger is not being ignorant. Perhaps it is believing that we know everything. We are the mice in the piano. We live inside a universe vastly larger and more complicated than our minds can fully comprehend. We see only a fraction of reality. We understand only a fraction of what exists. And yet we sometimes look at the small portion we understand and confidently declare that nothing exists beyond it. The Bible reminds us: “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, declares the LORD.” —Isaiah 55:8 And: “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways!” —Romans 11:33 The proper response to a God who is greater than our understanding is not arrogance. It is humility. It is worship. It is faith. The Music Continues The two mice eventually stopped believing in the piano player. They became convinced that they had explained everything. But outside their tiny world, the musician continued to play. The music never stopped. The fact that they could not see him did not mean he was absent. And perhaps that is where many people find themselves today. They have examined the mechanisms of the universe. They have learned about physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, and astronomy. They have become fascinated by the machinery. But they have never stopped to ask whether there is a Creator behind it all. The Christian message is that there is. His name is Jesus Christ. He is not merely an idea, a philosophy, or a comforting story. He is the Son of God who entered human history, died for our sins, and rose from the grave. And He calls every one of us to respond. Jesus said: “Whoever acknowledges Me before others, I will also acknowledge before My Father in heaven.” —Matthew 10:32 The question is not merely whether we believe that God exists. The deeper question is: What will we do with Jesus Christ? The piano is playing. The music is all around us. The question is whether we will remain convinced that there is nothing beyond the wires and hammers—or whether we will humble ourselves, listen carefully, and seek the One who is playing the music. Do not be so certain that you have explained the piano that you never look for the Player. —Pastor Joseph Clark

“Even God’s silence has a purpose.” Sometimes, when God does not answer, it is not because He is simply silent; it may be because He is working a deeper transformation within us something far greater than the answer we are asking for. When Joseph was in prison, God seemed silent; but behind that silence was a preparation for the palace. At Lazarus’ tomb, the delay made it seem as though everything was over; but behind that delay, the glory and power of God were revealed mightily. Therefore, do not be afraid when there are seasons in your life when God seems silent. Just as roots grow deeper where our eyes cannot see, trust that God is carefully and beautifully working something within your life, even when you cannot see it. When a Christian goes to work each day, God holds them accountable for adding, enhancing and improving things in their workplace. Jesus told the story of three men who were each given money. One was given five bags of it, another two, and another one. The first two ‘…went and traded with them, and gained…’ (Matthew 25:16 NAS). They showed skill, initiative, and made 100 percent profit. So they were commended by their master. But the third man just punched the clock, called in sick, didn’t train, try, dare, or do. So his job review didn’t go too well. And Jesus said something that ought to make us all sit up and take notice: ‘To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.’ That means if your attitude and work ethic are poor, you’re in trouble with God. So, let’s stop and think about your job. If Jesus were your supervisor, would you do your work any differently? How would you answer the phone, type documents, treat your employees, or teach your pupils if Jesus were checking your work? As a citizen of God’s kingdom you need to periodically review your attitude on the job, solicit feedback on how you can grow, demonstrate love and grace to those you work with, make your company profitable, and enjoy the work you do. All these show man's deliberate responsibilities in order to keep the blessings of God for a long time . In 1948, a released christian newsletter during the time of revivalist Abraham Branham reads. “All the great outpourings of the past have had their outstanding truths. Luther’s truth was Justification by Faith. Wesley’s was Sanctification. The Baptists taught the premillennial coming of Christ. The Missionary Alliance taught Divine Healing. The Pentecostal outpouring has restored the Baptism of the Holy Ghost to its rightful place. But, the next great outpouring is going to be marked by all these other truths plus such a demonstration of the nine gifts of the Spirit as the world, not even the Apostolic world, has ever witnessed before. This revival will be short and will be the last before the Rapture of the Church.” The consolation and joy is that whatever great and wonderful experiences we have enjoyed in the past can still be restored by God if man does the needful. This is the message of Hosea to Israel and the godly. *1. Call to Return to God* a. Adam, representing the man of all ages, started with God, but departed from God and many woes followed. In order to vacate the woes, the message of God is simple, return to God. All the woes, challenges, calamities, anguish, backslidings and challenges of man have only one divine prescription: Return to God. Returning to God requires turning or change. Man is generally, reluctant to change. This is one of Newton's Laws of Motion. Willingness to turn is generally, where the problem of man lies. The turning to God requires acceptance of wrongs towards God, decisions with appropriate steps and asking God for forgiveness without self justification. It involves deliberate action of repentance. Repentance from what cause the loss of good old blessings, including repentance from sin, unforgiving spirit, bitterness against neighbours and perhaps God, love of the world, selective obedience to the command of God in any area etc., are just what God is looking for before He pours down His blessings afresh. God did not see that turning or repentance in Adam and Eve. Both of them were busy giving excuses and blaming each other. Neither fully admitted his/her obvious wrong and neither fully repented and returned to God. The repercussion was that they never got the blessing they lost back. They were driven from the beautiful, blessed and blissful garden. If they had returned to God with words of soberness and repentance, the story would have been different for them and the whole humanity. All lost blessings from God are only returned after turning and repentance from the root cause. b. The message of God is the same. *"Come, and let us return unto the LORD"*. Stop the blame game. Stop the murmuring and complain. The promise of God for the repentant is valid at all times and in all generations. *"For he hath torn, and he will heal us"*. When your garment of glory is torn, when your shining regalia of blessings is torn, when the source of your joy is torn, the immediate and uncompromisable demand of God and solution is to turn to God. *"He hath smitten, and he will bind us up"*. This is a word of assurance for those who take the courage to turn from their evil ways, carelessness and compromise. *Question* Assess your life where you have departed from God and your old consecration to God and His word. Are you willing to turn? Start today. *2. Comforting Revival Through Grace* a. Has Israel not gone too far to an irredeemable damnable and bitter experience? God, through Hosea says NO. When there is possibility and willingness to turn, the promise to restore and revive is always unbreakable. Jesus said, *"the scripture cannot be broken."* Hosea used the picture of Calvary and the resurrection of Jesus on the third day to show the reality and restoration of revival for dead bones. *"After two days will he revive us"*. After two days is the third day including all other days after the third day. It shows the beginning of revival on the third day and the continuity of revival after the third day. *"In the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight"*. The resurrection of Jesus Christ has assurably made possible the restoration of any dead soul and experiences even when it appears they are already stinking spiritually in the grave. b. The parable of dead bones in Ezekiel 37 shows that revival and restoration is possible when the Word of God is given a prominent and final say in the life of an individual, family, church or nation. All the revivals the Church has experienced in different ages at a time of total darkness were as a result of giving the Word of God the first and unquestionably place. The same applies to any individual that needs revival. Taking the Word of God at face values drives to repentance including burdened and persistent prayers. Once this is done, the rain will definitely fall and there will be repentance and restoration. *Question* Are you desirous of revival and restoration of past glories in your life? From the explanation above, what is your decision? *3. Continuous Refreshment unto Glory* a. Why blessings are lost and revival is gone is because of lack of continuity in the Old faith and consecration that brought the revival in the first place. Jesus said, *"If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples in deed"*. Disciples in deeds are different from disciples in the mouth to profession. Continuity is the key. *"Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD"*. Continuous following leads to deeper knowledge and deeper knowledge is manifested by continuous following. *"His going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth"*. The former rain is to prepare the ground for planting while the latter rain is to prepare the crop for harvesting. It is the harvesting that is generally seen, but not the planting time of rigour and sacrifice. He that sows, though not seen by many should sow in hope because harvesting is certain. Rain of the Holy Spirit is needed to sow the seed of repentance, intercession and consecration while rain of the Holy Spirit is also needed to enjoy the harvest of refreshment, restoration and revival. Grace and mercy qualified him especially, because of the deep humility and fear of God in his life as at the time he was made king. King Saul began his reign with great promise. He was divinely chosen, physically impressive and empowered by God for leadership (1 Samuel 10:1, 9). Yet, his life ended in shame because of persistent disobedience, self-will and refusal to seek the Lord sincerely. The text not only shows the death of Saul, but also the collapse of a royal dynasty that could have enjoyed lasting honour. It reminds us that a good beginning does not guarantee a glorious ending. Only continual obedience, humility and dependence on God preserve a life, ministry, or family legacy. Those who think that they cannot lose whatever they receive from God, including eternal salvation, should learn from the life and end of Saul. *1. The Fall and Defeat of God's Giants* a. Saul and his sons were once regarded as the giants of Israel's military strength. They fought along with their father to win virtually all their battles except this last one. Even when they were not well prepared, God helped and strengthened them to be terrors to the nations around. *"So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and whithersoever he turned himself, he vexed them"* (1 Samuel 14:47). Victory was their birthright because of their allegiance to the God of heaven. He and his sons were giants in the hands of God. This time around, they all fell and were defeated the same day. They were not only captured, but were killed. What an avoidable tragedy that a promising and blessed first Royal family, that could have been a reference point of God's goodness and blessings, experienced. They all perished in a single day. b.How did they fall? It did not happen overnight. First, was the loss of focus. He allowed the enemy and jealousy to shift his attention from his divinely given responsibility to pursuing David who actually was not a threat. The deception of great position, persistence disobedience to the Word of God and the habit of taking God's warnings and Word for granted hardened his heart. The tragedy was not due merely to military weakness, but to spiritual failure that had accumulated over time. When those whom God raises fail to remain faithful, their strength cannot save them. Every believer must guard against drifting from God, regardless of past victories or present status. King Saul did not just lose his exalted blessings, but he also booked, signed and sealed he appointments to eternal condemnation in hell fire. *Question* Am I depending on past achievements or am I walking daily in humble obedience to God? *2. The Forceful Decimation of a Great General* a. King Saul ended his record as the first king in Israel who committed suicide and thus, ending his God-given life forcefully. He could have perished in the battle and still made heaven if in his final hours he decided to cry to God for mercy and forgiveness. Rather than trust God in his final crisis, Saul took his own life after asking his armour-bearer to kill him. His armour-bearer refused, and Saul fell upon his own sword. His death was quickly followed by that of his sons and many loyal servants. b. If Saul had not been king and he maintained his lowly lifestyle before he became king he might have made heaven. Was it his being anointed as king that made him to perish? NO. The bitterness, envy, jealousy and hatred in his heart was never dealt with. Eventually, he grew wings and became hardened in the heart. Never gloss over any filthiness in your heart. Ask God to cleanse your heart with the blood of Jesus and remove them. If they are not removed, they will turn to untamed lions in the house. b. A leader's fall often affects many others. Saul did not die alone. An unchecked rampaging leader will bring destruction not only to himself, but to others too. Saul's end illustrates the destructive consequences of persistent rebellion and self-reliance. The greatest safeguard in times of distress is unwavering confidence in God's mercy and guidance. *Question* Does my life and leadership encourage others toward faithfulness or can my spiritual decline harm those who follow me? *3. The Final Disgrace of the Graceless and the Godless* a. After Saul's death, Israel fled, the cities were abandoned. *"They (Israel) forsook their cities and fled: and the Philistines came and dwelt in them"*. Do we pity these godless citizens (Israelites) for losing their inheritance, including land, to the enemies? When Saul failed to concentrate on governance, but rather left the throne to chase David, did any citizen caution him apart from Samuel. Everybody kept mum. Some out of fear and some out of desire for favour while some were just nonchallant. We should be careful to humbly and politely ensure that leaders are made accountable and helped when it appears they are derailing. Leaders need our prayers and support while they are in the path of right while they need our loving and gentle reminder of the truth whenever they are in the path of wrong. Nobody, no matter how great, has immunity from falling. Lucifer had no rival, but he fell. Judas saw, lived and dined with the Lord Jesus Christ face to face, he fell. Solomon was the wisest king, but he foolishly and fatally fell. King Saul was unfaithful to God, disobeyed His Word, consulted a medium and failed to seek the Lord. Therefore, God removed him and transferred the kingdom to David. Grace rejected eventually, gives way to disgrace. It began with the breach of God's express commandment. Saul disobeyed the Lord, and followed it up, not with repentance, but with more sinful conduct. Even at the point of death, he enacted the final iniquity: suicide.* *It is not enough for nations and their institutions of administration to seek leaders to guide them. They must look for pivotal men and women who would wholly yield themselves to the shepherding and correction of God. This is key if they want a society that would thrive, prosper and withstand challenges and upheavals of statehood. Now, this requirement holds true also in the different aspects of the workforce of the church. Otherwise, their frailties would destroy them and those they are leading, as in the case of Saul.* *Our Lord is the ultimate Leader. Without Him, man would be perennially on a bumpy ride, falling into a series of perilous failures. The Church should step in to halt the slide by teaching sound scriptural doctrines to raise God-fearing leaders. We must saturate everywhere with heaven-focused citizens with our preaching and righteous lifestyle. Old Testament symbols, such as the Ark, are a picture of New Testament realities. In this regard, the Ark, which was the most important piece of furniture in the tabernacle, is a picture of the Christ we love and serve. He is Lord. He is supreme. There’s no one like Him. And He alone is worthy of all praise! Paul writes: ‘Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through Him, God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see—such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through Him and for Him. He existed before everything else, and he holds all creation together. Christ is also the head of the church, which is His body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So He is first in everything. For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and through Him God reconciled everything to himself…’ (Colossians 1:15-20 NLT). If your faith is ‘me-centred,’ you’ll get nowhere with God. But when your faith is ‘Christ-centred,’ then everything Christ has becomes available to you! But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. So Saul took a sword, and fell upon it. 5 And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise on the sword, and died. 6 So Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house died together. 7 And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, then they forsook their cities, and fled: and the Philistines came and dwelt in them. 8 And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his sons fallen in mount Gilboa. 9 And when they had stripped him, they took his head, and his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to carry tidings unto their idols, and to the people. 10 And they put his armour in the house of their gods, and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon. 11 And when all Jabeshgilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 They arose, all the valiant men, and took away the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days. 13 So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it; 14 And enquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse. *Timeless Truth:*_"So Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house died together"_ (1 Chronicles 10:6). *INTRODUCTION* He never dreamt of becoming the first King of Israel and neither did he ever think his family will be chosen by God to be a dynasty of kings perpetually, ruling over Israel. Grace and mercy qualified him especially, because of the deep humility and fear of God in his life as at the time he was made king. King Saul began his reign with great promise. He was divinely chosen, physically impressive and empowered by God for leadership (1 Samuel 10:1, 9). Yet, his life ended in shame because of persistent disobedience, self-will and refusal to seek the Lord sincerely. The text not only shows the death of Saul, but also the collapse of a royal dynasty that could have enjoyed lasting honour. It reminds us that a good beginning does not guarantee a glorious ending. Only continual obedience, humility and dependence on God preserve a life, ministry, or family legacy. Those who think that they cannot lose whatever they receive from God, including eternal salvation, should learn from the life and end of Saul. *1. The Fall and Defeat of God's Giants* a. Saul and his sons were once regarded as the giants of Israel's military strength. They fought along with their father to win virtually all their battles except this last one. Even when they were not well prepared, God helped and strengthened them to be terrors to the nations around. *"So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and whithersoever he turned himself, he vexed them"* (1 Samuel 14:47). Victory was their birthright because of their allegiance to the God of heaven. He and his sons were giants in the hands of God. This time around, they all fell and were defeated the same day. They were not only captured, but were killed. What an avoidable tragedy that a promising and blessed first Royal family, that could have been a reference point of God's goodness and blessings, experienced. They all perished in a single day. b.How did they fall? It did not happen overnight. First, was the loss of focus. He allowed the enemy and jealousy to shift his attention from his divinely given responsibility to pursuing David who actually was not a threat. The deception of great position, persistence disobedience to the Word of God and the habit of taking God's warnings and Word for granted hardened his heart. The tragedy was not due merely to military weakness, but to spiritual failure that had accumulated over time. When those whom God raises fail to remain faithful, their strength cannot save them. Every believer must guard against drifting from God, regardless of past victories or present status. King Saul did not just lose his exalted blessings, but he also booked, signed and sealed he appointments to eternal condemnation in hell fire. *Question* Am I depending on past achievements or am I walking daily in humble obedience to God? *2. The Forceful Decimation of a Great General* a. King Saul ended his record as the first king in Israel who committed suicide and thus, ending his God-given life forcefully. He could have perished in the battle and still made heaven if in his final hours he decided to cry to God for mercy and forgiveness. Rather than trust God in his final crisis, Saul took his own life after asking his armour-bearer to kill him. His armour-bearer refused, and Saul fell upon his own sword. His death was quickly followed by that of his sons and many loyal servants. b. If Saul had not been king and he maintained his lowly lifestyle before he became king he might have made heaven. Was it his being anointed as king that made him to perish? NO. The bitterness, envy, jealousy and hatred in his heart was never dealt with. Eventually, he grew wings and became hardened in the heart. Never gloss over any filthiness in your heart. Ask God to cleanse your heart with the blood of Jesus and remove them. If they are not removed, they will turn to untamed lions in the house. b. A leader's fall often affects many others. Saul did not die alone. An unchecked rampaging leader will bring destruction not only to himself, but to others too. Saul's end illustrates the destructive consequences of persistent rebellion and self-reliance. The greatest safeguard in times of distress is unwavering confidence in God's mercy and guidance. *Question* Does my life and leadership encourage others toward faithfulness or can my spiritual decline harm those who follow me? *3. The Final Disgrace of the Graceless and the Godless* a. After Saul's death, Israel fled, the cities were abandoned. *"They (Israel) forsook their cities and fled: and the Philistines came and dwelt in them"*. Do we pity these godless citizens (Israelites) for losing their inheritance, including land, to the enemies? When Saul failed to concentrate on governance, but rather left the throne to chase David, did any citizen caution him apart from Samuel. Everybody kept mum. Some out of fear and some out of desire for favour while some were just nonchallant. We should be careful to humbly and politely ensure that leaders are made accountable and helped when it appears they are derailing. Leaders need our prayers and support while they are in the path of right while they need our loving and gentle reminder of the truth whenever they are in the path of wrong. Nobody, no matter how great, has immunity from falling. Lucifer had no rival, but he fell. Judas saw, lived and dined with the Lord Jesus Christ face to face, he fell. Solomon was the wisest king, but he foolishly and fatally fell. King Saul was unfaithful to God, disobeyed His Word, consulted a medium and failed to seek the Lord. Therefore, God removed him and transferred the kingdom to David. Grace rejected eventually, gives way to disgrace. And he did not go down alone. He took along "his three sons, and all his house." The children of Israel who escaped death in the battle against the Philistines fled, allowing the enemy to take over their land. How did it all start? It began with the breach of God's express commandment. Saul disobeyed the Lord, and followed it up, not with repentance, but with more sinful conduct. Even at the point of death, he enacted the final iniquity: suicide.* *It is not enough for nations and their institutions of administration to seek leaders to guide them. They must look for pivotal men and women who would wholly yield themselves to the shepherding and correction of God. This is key if they want a society that would thrive, prosper and withstand challenges and upheavals of statehood. Now, this requirement holds true also in the different aspects of the workforce of the church. Otherwise, their frailties would destroy them and those they are leading, as in the case of Saul.* *Our Lord is the ultimate Leader. Without Him, man would be perennially on a bumpy ride, falling into a series of perilous failures. The Church should step in to halt the slide by teaching sound scriptural doctrines to raise God-fearing leaders. We must saturate everywhere with heaven-focused citizens with our preaching and righteous lifestyle.
