Daily Devotion: Phillipians 3:13-14
“…the one thing I do, however, is to forget what is behind me and do my best to reach what is ahead. So I run straight towards the goal in order to win the prize, which is God’s call through Christ Jesus to the life above.”
Are you stuck in the past? Do you constantly worry about mistakes you made? Perhaps you feel you failed at being a child of God; perhaps you failed at relationships, work, whatever. Paul sets the example in this scripture. He says that he lets go of what is behind him, whether it was failure at being a good Christian or something connected with his worldly life. If you recall, Paul had a lot to feel miserable about; he persecuted Christians! He was directly involved with the stoning of Stephen and probably condemned many followers of Christ to death. But that was before God called him to service on the road to Damascus. Paul said he left all those failures behind and only focused on what lies ahead, his devotion to Christ and life everlasting in the presence of God.
In the same way we should let go of our past mistakes, even if we feel we have been terrible at being children of God. God forgives us for everything and we should forgive ourselves and let go of that which are holding us back. If you keep focusing on the past, you will become blind to the present and the future. Instead, use those experiences as means to grow and become better people, more devoted to life in Christ. Remember that, as disciple of Christ, you have been called to a holy life and that calling cannot be taken from you.
2 Timothy 2:15: “Do your best to win full approval in God’s sight, as a worker who is not ashamed of his work, one who correctly teaches the message of God’s truth.”
Let go of the past and reach towards the goal, which is everlasting life as promised by God for those who follow Him.
2 Timothy 2:12: “If continue to endure, we shall also rule with him.”
