Nothing gets in or out without your permission.’ That’s a picture of how things work in your spiritual life! ‘A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls’—a defenceless city, because its guard failed to protect it. But what if the enemy is too powerful for you? For God’s people, all warfare is spiritual. Whether you’re tested on the social, financial, emotional or sexual front, the battle must be won spiritually. And the rule in spiritual warfare is: ‘…Greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world’ (1 John 4:4). When your personal territory is under assault, you’re never abandoned to your own devices—unless you choose to be. However inadequate you feel, however intimidating the situation looks, no matter how many battles you’ve already lost, the power of the Holy Spirit within you is always adequate to guarantee your victory. What’s the key to releasing that power? 1) ‘…Clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires’ (Romans 13:14 NLT). Invite the Lord to take the wheel and redirect your thoughts. 2) ‘…The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives…self-control…’ (Galatians 5:22-23 NLT). God’s Spirit won’t forcibly control you. But He will enable you to control yourself, resist temptation, master your vulnerability and win the victory. Years later, while the students he terrorised built careers, he remained jobless, shunned, and miserable.* *The cult leader had his time. As these malicious zealots exuded the euphoria of their "exploit" of capturing Jesus, as if He were a robber, He queried them, "Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves?" Their rude attitude was unnecessary and a mismatch with Christ's peaceful disposition. They lacked the authority and courage to accost Christ all the time He ministered in the temple and everywhere; but why now? Christ could only rationalise their behaviour and reconcile Himself to it, considering it was their time. It was a time when the power of darkness was permitted to do its worst, which would eventually redound to God's purpose - and to humanity's redemption.* *We often witness the "triumphing of the wicked," where dubious individuals exploit the political space, misuse power, and afflict the righteous. We find people "prospering" in business by cutting corners and through corruption. People gain fame and fortune by adopting perverted lifestyles and performances. We live in a time when evil is called good, and good evil - all to the frustration of the righteous. There is even a rise in the active persecution of Christians around the world. But we should be comforted by the submission of our Lord: it is their time. Consider also that "the triumphing of the wicked is short..." (Job 20:5).* *If you are a true follower of Christ, keep walking with Him. Do not be dismayed by the attitudes and actions of the worldly. The temporary humiliation of Christ resulted in eternal honour and our redemption. And Peter followed afar off. *Timeless Truth:*_"There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it"_ (1 Corinthians 10:13). *INTRODUCTION* Do you know that God has His own time table for every event in your life? *"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven"* (Ecclesiastics 3:1). Is it possible to miss God's timing for some events in your life? Israel refused to cooperate with God and they got themselves king Saul through pressure and desire to be like other nations. Had they waited for God's timing for them before they started having kings, the tragedies they faced, as a nation, due to the reign of King Saul would have been avoided. Saul himself would not have been king. God has His own timing for the coming of the Messiah. He came. But Israel, through unbelief, missed the divine timing and were blinded from recognizing their Messiah. They will remain in that state of blindness till the Second Coming of Christ. Missing God's timing is very costly in every respect. God is never late, neither is He ever early. He works according to His perfect timetable. The arrest of Jesus Christ, though pathetic, was not a triumph of evil over good, but the fulfilment of God's eternal purpose and timing. Though wicked men thought they had taken control of events, they were only carrying out what God had already permitted within His sovereign plan. Believers must therefore, trust God's timing even when circumstances appear confusing or unfavourable, knowing that nothing happens outside His knowledge and authority. *1. The Arrest of the Omnipotent by the Destroyers* a. Jesus questioned the chief priests, captains of the temple and elders, asking why they came against Him with swords and clubs as though He were a dangerous criminal. Ironically, they attempted to arrest the One who has all powers -the Omnipotent God. How could mortals use swords and staves to arrest the One who is Omnipotent and Omniscience except God Himself permitted it? Their conspiracy and arrest did not come to Jesus by surprise. Jesus knew it would happen and that the timing was then, but they were ignorant of this fact. Their hatred blinded them to His identity, yet they could not lay hands on Him until the appointed hour arrived. This reminds us that no enemy can frustrate God's purpose or act beyond His permission. Human opposition may seem powerful, but God's sovereign plan always prevails. b. Believers do face difficult times like trials, temptations, tempests and tough times. It is not because the enemy is so powerful, but rather God allowed it and has a reason for it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 shows that God moderates all those tough times to be within the limits of the power and grace of God deposited and available for the specific believers. Like the popular song writer wrote: "He knows the bitter, weary way, The endless striving day by day, The souls that weep, the souls that pray; My Father knows, my Father knows". *Question* Do I recognize that God is fully aware of the tough times I am passing through and it is by His permission? *2. The Allowed Operation by the Divine* b. Jesus declared, *"This is your hour, and the power of darkness."* Satan and his agents were permitted to operate, but only for a limited time. God did not lose control; He simply allowed their actions to accomplish His redemptive purpose through the cross. Every trial, persecution or apparent victory of evil has a divine limit. God's permission is never His abandonment and His sovereign purpose will ultimately bring glory to His name and victory to His children. b. Both the problems and the promises of believers have God's own timing of fulfilment or manifestation. Jesus moved freely in the temple and in the Jewish streets for about three years and nobody could touch Him because it was not yet God's time for Him to be arrested. Ability to recognize God's plan and His timing is the surest path of peaceful and joyful living at all times. *"For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come"* (Habakkuk 2:3). The same is true with the vision of the Rapture, the Second Coming of Christ etc. God is moderating all events to fit into His timing. Don't run ahead of God, ask for a revelation of His time and patiently wait for His time. *"For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry"* (Hebrews 10:37). *Question* Can I patiently trust God's sovereignty when He allows temporary trials or the seeming success of evil? *3. The Afar-Off Disciple* Peter's fall and denial of Jesus did not happen overnight. It started with self confidence when he did not take the warnings of Jesus about His betrayal very seriously. This self confidence affected him that he did not draw from the river of grace when Jesus asked him to join Him in prayers at the Garden of Gethsemane. He slept off throughout. He later resorted to carnality by cutting off the ear of someone in defence of Jesus. The next phase of his backsliding was when he started following Jesus "afar off". After Jesus was arrested, Peter followed "afar off." Fear and uncertainty caused him to keep a safe distance from the Lord. Times of testing often reveal the depth of our commitment. When God's timing differs from our expectations, we may be tempted to withdraw from close fellowship with Christ. However, believers are called to remain faithful and confident that God's timing is always perfect, even when we do not fully understand His ways. When you follow Jesus afar off, your Quiet Time will be mechanical, your love for fellowship will just turn into an unpleasant routine. The end result is that you prefer moving closer with unbelievers than true, genuine and fervent believers. That was the case of Peter and eventually, he fell. *Question* Am I following Christ closely in difficult times, or have fear and disappointment caused me to keep my distance from Him? Are you an "afar off" disciple? *Prayer Points* 1.Father, help me to trust Your perfect timing and sovereign control over every situation in my life 🙏. 2.Lord, strengthen my faith to remain steadfast when You permit trials for Your greater purpose 🙏. 3.Father, deliver me from fear and help me to follow Christ closely in every season of life 🙏. 4.Lord, visit all those members following you "afar off" and bring them to the deeper love of Jesus🙏. *HYMN:* My Father Knows. *BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:* EXODUS 37-38. May Your kingdom come. May Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. This is our prayer this morning. We want Your kingdom to come fully into our hearts so that everything in us submits to Your rule. We want You to be the King of our lives, seated on the throne of our hearts, ruling over our affections, feelings, and desires. So we pray that Your kingdom may come in our lives. May everything in us that opposes You be brought into submission. May our ways that are not right be changed to align with Your holy ways. Sometimes we get frustrated and upset when things don't go our way, when our work is hard, or when our plans don't succeed as we hoped. Father, forgive us for our discontent and rebellion. We know You are training us and that we are in Your school all the time. We know that when we complain and get upset about our circumstances, we not only grieve You but also hinder Your work in us. Help us to humbly submit to all Your ways and learn well the lesson of submission and trust in Your sovereign plan for us. We want to be truly able to say, "May Your will be done." Pastor Loran Livingston is not an obscure voice. He is the longtime pastor of Central Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he has served for more than four decades. That makes his recent remarks all the more significant. When a pastor of his experience and influence declares that America has never been, is not now, and never can be a Christian nation, his words carry weight. They also merit careful examination. Pastor Livingston recently argued that America cannot rightly be called a Christian nation because of its many sins. He cited the killing and displacement of Native Americans, the evil of slavery, the carnage of the Civil War, the slaughter of the unborn, gender confusion, the mutilation of children, and the promotion of same-sex unions. Much of what he condemned deserves condemnation. No Christian should defend the mistreatment of Native Americans, slavery, abortion, sexual confusion, or the redefinition of marriage. These are not minor matters. They are serious national sins. But Pastor Livingston’s conclusion does not follow from his evidence. Livingston acknowledged that godly people came to these shores seeking religious freedom, that great Bible preachers thundered from American pulpits, and that some who helped build this country were godly. “But,” he concluded, “it has never been a Christian nation — and never will be.” That may sound bold. It may even sound prophetic. Nevertheless, it seeks to answer an argument many serious Christians are not making. When thoughtful Christians speak of America as a Christian nation, they do not mean the United States is the Church. They do not mean every American is saved, every Founder was orthodox, every law was righteous, every war was just, or every public act was pleasing to God. Only individuals can be redeemed by the blood of Christ. America is not the Kingdom of God. However, that is not the full question. The real question is whether America’s founding principles, moral assumptions, legal traditions, understanding of liberty, and concept of human rights were significantly shaped by Christianity. On that point, the historical record is extensive. The Declaration of Independence appeals to “the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God,” asserts that men are “endowed by their Creator” with certain unalienable rights, appeals to “the Supreme Judge of the world,” and closes with “a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence.” Those words do not make the Declaration a church confession. But they do show that America’s founding was neither secularist nor atheistic nor religiously neutral. Rights were not treated as gifts from the government but as gifts from God. Government was not the source of moral authority. It was answerable to a higher authority. This understanding is not a recent invention of conservative Christians. In 1892, the United States Supreme Court recognized this historical reality in Church of the Holy Trinity v. United States. After reviewing numerous public acknowledgments of God and Christianity in American life, the Court concluded that these declarations contributed “to the mass of organic utterances that this is a Christian nation.” That statement meant then what many Christians still mean today: America’s laws, customs, institutions, and moral assumptions were profoundly formed by Christianity. Pastor Livingston points to America’s sins as though they erase her Christian inheritance. They do not. They only reveal how often the nation has betrayed it. A nation may possess great religious light and still rebel against it. Israel worshiped idols, oppressed the poor, shed innocent blood, and rejected the prophets. Yet Scripture still recognized Israel’s religious identity while condemning Israel’s sins. Nor should we speak only of America’s sins while ignoring the immeasurable good this nation has done because it has adhered to Christian principles. Under the influence of those principles, America has helped advance human dignity, moral accountability, ordered liberty, charitable service, education, hospitals, orphan care, prison reform, abolitionist efforts, civil rights appeals, and countless ministries to the poor, the addicted, the hungry, the sick, and the forgotten. America has often failed to live up to her own ideals, but when she has lived nearest to the Christian truths that gave those ideals moral substance, she has been a blessing not only to her own citizens but also to the world. In their book 'What If the Bible Had Never Been Written?', the late Dr. D. James Kennedy and Jerry Newcombe observed that claiming America is, or ever was, a “Christian nation” has become “fighting words.” They noted the irony that in a country so profoundly molded by Christians, believers now find themselves on the defensive. The secularist who attacks Christianity in America, they wrote, is like “a petty ingrate standing atop a large pyramid constructed by the sweat and blood of Christians, hurling stones at their descendants.” That is a powerful image. But it is even more grievous when one of our own Christian brethren repeats an argument that, however unintentionally, does similar harm. Pastor Livingston surely does not intend to aid secularism. Still, his argument undermines the sacrifices of countless faithful Christians who labor to reconnect America with her religious moorings. Those moorings are part of why preachers like Livingston and all of us have the liberty to stand in a pulpit, open the Scriptures, and proclaim the Gospel without fear of government reprisal. Those moorings are also what secular forces in our day are working tirelessly to erase. That is why Pastor Livingstone’s argument is troubling. It tells Christians, in effect, that there is nothing to return to — that America was never meaningfully shaped by Christianity, never possessed a Christian moral foundation, and can never legitimately be described as Christian in any historical or cultural sense. That is simply not true. No serious Christian claims America is a redeemed nation or that citizenship is the same as salvation. The debate is not whether America has always obeyed God. She has not. The debate is not whether America’s history contains grievous sins. It does. The debate is whether America’s founding ideals were rooted in a moral order derived from the Christian understanding of God, man, law, liberty, and justice. They were. The very sins Pastor Livingston names can only be rightly judged by a standard higher than the shifting opinions of men. Why is slavery wrong? Why is abortion evil? Why is the mutilation of children wicked? Why is marriage not whatever the culture says it is? Why should the poor, the veteran, the unborn, the stranger, and the weak be treated with dignity? Why should civil government protect the innocent, punish wrongdoing, and recognize moral limits at all? The answer is clear: because there is a just God in heaven, because man is made in His image, because His law is righteous, and because no government has the authority to redefine what God has established. Granted, America is not saved by patriotic sentiment. America needs the Gospel. Americans need to repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Nevertheless, nations remain accountable to God and will be judged by Him. A nation can expect to prosper when it honors righteousness and be ruined when it celebrates evil. The Scriptures say, “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). That verse does not say righteousness exalts only the Church. It says righteousness exalts a nation. Any nation. And sin is a reproach to any people. Therefore, Christians should not become discouraged and give up the effort to call America back to truth. In recent years, after many years of political advocacy by Christians, old ground has been retaken. There is still much work to be done. It is a serious error to argue that America has no Christian heritage simply because she has often sinned against it. America’s sins prove that she desperately needs to return to the same Christian truths that provided her with her highest ideals — the very truths she has so often betrayed. LIVING IN A LIFE OF SACRIFICE “And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life.” (Matthew 19:29 ESV) Many of us have small luxuries that, if we are honest, are hard to live without! It may be winding down while watching Netflix, enjoying a favorite meal, cozying up with a nice book, or spending time on a hobby. Mine is browsing the net. I don’t like to sacrifice my netizenship! But is that truly a sacrifice? What is a sacrifice even considered to be? Generally, a sacrifice involves giving up something of greater personal value in exchange for something of lesser value. While many of us may poorly understand significant personal sacrifice, Jesus is intimately familiar with the subject. He gave up His place in heaven to live 33 years with sinful humanity, culminating with an excruciating death and separation from the Father when he took on all of our sins to save the very people who scorned and killed Him. His sacrifice is unfathomable! I fear that when we lose sight of what is of the most value, we consequently become incapable of comprehending the daily sacrifices Jesus calls us to. We must not allow our personal preferences and skewed perspectives to devalue Jesus’ perfect sacrifice. Jesus calls His followers to live lives also characterized by sacrifice. In His Sermon on the Mount, He lays out the parameters for His kingdom. “Blessed are the poor in spirit … . Blessed are the meek … . Blessed are the merciful … . Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake … . Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.” (Matthew 5:3, 5, 7, 10, 11) Why? “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” (Matthew 5:12) In summary, “But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” (Matthew 19:30) David Livingstone, a missionary to Africa in the 1800s, summarized this perspective eloquently in Perspectives on the World Christian Movement: “Anxiety, sickness, suffering, or danger, now and then, with a foregoing of the common conveniences and charities of this life, may make us pause, and cause the spirit to waver, and the soul to sink; but let this only be for a moment. All these are nothing when compared with the glory that shall be revealed in and for us. I never made a sacrifice.” As someone very much qualified to speak on what many of us would consider a life filled with sacrifice, Livingstone truly understood God’s eternal perspective. It is not a sacrifice if you gain more out of it! Ultimately, we find that obedience to God is not a sacrifice. Instead, Jesus declared, “For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?” (Matthew 16:25-26) So, let us live a life exemplifying bold and selfless obedience to the One who sacrificed everything for us. God, give us Your eternal perspective so that we can live in a way that aligns with Your priorities! In Jesus’ name, amen. God bless you!

Hey friends. Here’s my October Mission Update — a glimpse of how God’s been working this month of October. Subject: October Mission Update “The Mission Into Africa by God” (Oct 17–19) Preheader: A brief update from Dennis Gitonga — Eldoret conference highlights, weekly lessons, and prayer requests. Dear friends and supporters, Warm greetings in the name of Jesus! I’m so thankful for each of you who continues to pray for me and support my journey of faith. Your prayers, encouragement, and love mean so much and remind me that we are partners together in God’s mission. Eldoret Conference (October 17–19) In October I traveled to Eldoret for the Mission Into Africa by God conference at the Reformed Church of East Africa. The theme came from Zechariah 10:5 — “They shall fight, because the LORD is with them.” It was a powerful time of renewal and vision. Highlights: • Hope for Africa (Mr. Okike): God restores His people through humility, prayer, and faith. • Morning Devotion (Sir Alex): David & Goliath — private victories prepare us for public mission. • Workshop — Mission & Community: The Church (Ekklesia) is a movement, called to be witnesses to the world. The conference closed with a commissioning service — a beautiful time of surrender as we declared, “Here am I, Lord — send me.” I left Eldoret encouraged and ready to live out my calling wherever God leads. 📖 Growing Through the Word (October) Throughout October I continued weekly lessons on Wednesdays, studying Listening to Jesus and Find My Place.
