In response to a question about the method of prayer and whether prayer has a canon?
The answer: There is no single answer; because you must enter the depths of your heart and see your love: Is it alive, moving your will? Or are you a person living by thought alone? This is the temptation of all beginners who search for thoughts to move their dormant emotions. He who lives according to his thought falls quickly into coldness of heart. But he who lives by the will, knowing that his life is preserved steadfast in the Rock of the Ages, our Lord Jesus Christ, will navigate the sea of the world in peace.
As for the word "canon," it is not a defect, nor a crime; because originally means the rudder that moves the ship, and it is from the pen that writes what is good and necessary. But, in true piety, the canon is the determination of a direction and not a law, meaning that you determine a goal, not that you prohibit; because evil is prohibited by the divine commandments. But the canon is what explains to us the direction of life. What the canon prohibits is what hinders life. We do not have a canon about prayer, rather prayers grew within the Christian community and became the true powers for the life of communion. They therefore contain what is against heresies, and praise of what is divine, and all man's needs for union with the Lord Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit.
As for advice, it is to choose what you can practice, and the choice should not be according to approval alone, lest you fall into the pit of self-satisfaction and considering self-satisfaction as life. But approval according to need, meaning a choice by discernment. For example: to pray during work, or at any time during the day.
I had a doctor friend whose day was very busy, and he told me that he doesn't pray at all and that he is very sad. I asked him: Do you have even one minute to say: "O Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me"? You must be free from any work for even 5 minutes, why don't you pray the Jesus Prayer? He came after a few days joyful, for he found that the Jesus Prayer entered and filled the emptiness of his heart.
Please note the following:
First: Prayer is the activity of the lover who searches for the Beloved. It is, if you will, the striving of love.
Second: Prayer is having a true knowledge of what you need.
