  • Daily Devotion — June 30 | Acts 5:3 (NKJV)

The Danger of a Divided Heart

Acts 5:3 records a sobering moment in the early church. Ananias and his wife Sapphira sold a piece of property and brought part of the proceeds to the apostles. There was nothing wrong with giving only a portion of the money. The problem was that they pretended to give everything while secretly keeping some for themselves. Their sin was not a lack of generosity but a deliberate attempt to deceive.

Peter, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, exposed what had taken place. He asked Ananias why he had allowed Satan to fill his heart and influence him to lie. This incident reveals the seriousness with which God views hypocrisy and dishonesty among His people. While others saw an outward act of devotion, God saw the true condition of Ananias's heart.

This passage reminds us that God is concerned not only with our actions but also with our motives. It is possible to appear faithful on the outside while harboring pride, selfishness, or deception within. Yet nothing is hidden from the Lord. He sees every thought, intention, and desire of the heart.

For believers today, Acts 5:3 is a call to sincerity and integrity. God desires genuine worship, honest obedience, and hearts that are fully devoted to Him. Rather than seeking the approval of others, we are called to live transparently before God, knowing that He values truth in the inward parts.

The good news is that God does not reveal our hearts to condemn us but to transform us. When we confess our sins and submit ourselves to Him, He graciously forgives, cleanses, and strengthens us to walk in truth.

    Reflection Questions

    1. Are there areas of my life where I am more concerned with appearances than genuine obedience?

    2. Have I allowed pride or the desire for approval to influence my actions?

    3. What steps can I take to cultivate greater honesty and integrity before God?

    Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for knowing my heart completely. Forgive me for any hypocrisy, pride, or dishonesty that may be present in my life. Help me to walk in truth and integrity before You. Create in me a sincere heart that seeks Your approval above all else. Strengthen me to live faithfully and honestly each day. In Jesus name Amen.

    Practical Application

    ● Ask God to reveal any areas where your actions and motives do not align.
    ● Practice honesty in both small and large matters throughout the day.
    ● Seek God's approval above the praise or recognition of others.

    Takeaway Thought

God desires hearts that are sincere before Him, for true devotion begins with inward integrity.
