  • Today's Gospel
    20 June 2026 ยท Saturday
    11th Week in Ordinary Time
    Matthew 6:24โ€“34

    Jesus said to His disciples:

"No one can serve two masters.

Either he will hate the one
    and love the other,
or he will be devoted to the one
    and despise the other.

You cannot serve God and mammon.

    Therefore I tell you,
do not worry about your life,
what you will eat or drink,
    or about your body,
    what you will wear.

Is not life more than food,
and the body more than clothing?

Look at the birds of the air โ€”
    they neither sow nor reap
    nor gather into barns,

    and yet your heavenly Father
    feeds them.

Are you not of more value
    than they?

And which of you by worrying
    can add a single hour
    to his span of life?

    And why do you worry
    about clothing?

Consider the lilies of the field,
    how they grow.

    They neither toil nor spin,
    yet I tell you,
even Solomon in all his glory
was not arrayed like one of these.

But if God so clothes the grass
    of the field,
    which today is alive
and tomorrow is thrown into the oven,

    will He not much more
    clothe you,
    O you of little faith?

    Therefore do not worry, saying,
    'What will we eat?'
    or 'What will we drink?'
    or 'What will we wear?'

    For the Gentiles seek
    all these things,

    and your heavenly Father knows
    that you need them all.

But seek first the kingdom of God
    and His righteousness,

    and all these things
    will be added to you.

    Therefore do not worry
    about tomorrow,

    for tomorrow will worry
    about itself.

    Sufficient for the day
    is its own trouble."

    Reflection

    Yesterday Jesus asked us
    where our treasure lies.

    Today He goes deeper.

    He names the thing
    that usually competes
    for that treasure โ€”

    worry.

"No one can serve two masters."

This is not really about money.

    It is about where
    we place our trust.

    Mammon is not a coin.

    Mammon is the entire system
    of self-reliance โ€”

    the quiet belief that
if I don't secure it myself,
    no one will.

    That belief produces
    a particular kind of exhaustion.

    The exhaustion of carrying
    tomorrow
    on top of today.

    Jesus doesn't tell us
    not to plan,
    not to work,
    not to provide.

He tells us not to worry โ€”

    not to let anxiety
    about the future
    become the operating system
    of our present moment.

    And then He gives us
    two of the gentlest images
    in all of Scripture.

    Birds.

    Lilies.

    Creatures that do nothing
    to secure their own existence,

    and yet are fed,
    and yet are clothed
    more beautifully
    than any king.

    Not because they worked
    for it.

    Because they were made
    by a Father
    who already knows
    what they need.

"Are you not of more value
    than they?"

    This is the heart
    of the whole passage.

    If God clothes grass
that exists for a single day
    and is then burned โ€”

    how much more
    will He care
    for the children
    He calls by name?

The anxiety many of us carry
    is not really about
    food or clothing.

    It is a quiet,
    unspoken doubt
    about whether we are
    truly cared for.

    Jesus is answering
    that doubt directly.

"Seek first the kingdom of God
    and His righteousness,

    and all these things
    will be added to you."

Notice โ€” He does not say
    these things will disappear.

He says they will be added.

    Provided.

    Given,
    not earned through anxiety,

    but received
    through trust.

    "Sufficient for the day
    is its own trouble."

    This is not permission
    to be careless about tomorrow.

    It is permission
    to stop carrying tomorrow
    today.

    One day's burden
    is already enough
    for one day's grace.

    Truths to Remember

    โ€ข You cannot serve both
    God and anxious self-reliance
    โ€ข Worry adds nothing โ€”
    it only steals the present
โ€ข God's care is not earned,
it is given, like the birds and lilies
    โ€ข Seeking the kingdom first
    reorders every other priority
    โ€ข Today's grace is sufficient
for today's trouble โ€” no more is needed

    Prayer

    Father,
    You know what I need
    before I even ask.

    Quiet the anxious voice
    that tells me
    I must secure
    everything myself.

    Help me seek
    Your kingdom first,

    and trust that
    You will provide
    what today requires.

    Sufficient for this day
    is Your grace.

    Amen.

    What is one worry
    you can hand over
    to God today?
