Christianity Begins with Revelation, Not Human Discovery John opens his letter in a remarkably earthy way. Christianity is not introduced as philosophy, speculation, or private spiritual insight. John speaks as a witness. He heard Christ. He saw Christ. He touched Christ. The faith is rooted in reality, not religious imagination. This matters because humanity has always preferred spirituality that floats free from accountability. A vague religion cannot be disproven because it never risks becoming concrete. John refuses that escape route. The Son of God entered history visibly, physically, publicly. The apostles did not meditate their way into Christianity; they encountered the risen Christ. The Word of Life Was Manifested John calls Jesus “the Word of life.” Life is not merely something Christ gives; it is something He is. Eternal life is not presented in Scripture as an abstract force floating through the universe like spiritual humidity. Eternal life is found in a Person. John stresses that this life “was manifested.” The invisible God made Himself known. The eternal stepped into time. The One who was “with the Father” entered the ordinary world of roads, meals, dust, exhaustion, tears, and crucifixion. Christianity therefore does not deny reality in order to manufacture comfort. Fellowship Is Rooted in Truth Modern people often speak of fellowship as emotional warmth, shared interests, or the pleasant experience of being around agreeable people with decent casserole recipes. Biblical fellowship is deeper than that. John says fellowship begins with the apostolic witness to Christ. The apostles proclaim what they saw and heard so that others may share in fellowship with them — and ultimately with the Father and the Son. True Christian fellowship is therefore not built upon pretending differences do not exist or avoiding difficult truths in the name of niceness. It is built upon shared union with Christ through the truth of the gospel. The church is not merely a collection of people trying to be encouraging. Joy Is the Fruit of Reality, Not the Denial of It John closes this opening section by speaking of joy. This is important because Christian joy is often misunderstood. Scripture never defines joy as pretending life is painless or convincing ourselves that suffering is imaginary. John writes during a world filled with persecution, false teaching, hardship, death, and uncertainty. Yet he still speaks confidently of fullness of joy. Why? Because joy is rooted not in circumstances, but in fellowship with the living Christ. Christian joy survives reality because it is anchored in something deeper than reality’s changing conditions. The world frequently offers two counterfeit paths: denial or despair. John offers neither. John writes as an old shepherd reminding believers that stability is found not in novelty, but in abiding truth. The apostles were witnesses, not inventors. Their task was not to improve the message, but to faithfully proclaim it. This remains deeply relevant because every age believes itself sophisticated enough to revise Christianity into something more acceptable. ❤️INSPIRATION❤️ Specifically, this refers to how women dressed and cared for their hair. Then, as now, church gatherings were not an appropriate time to dress seductively or for attention. Clothing styles vary, and tastes change based on time and culture. All the same, how women (and men) dress should be appropriate for worship of God. Paul's point is not that certain hairstyles are necessarily sinful; rather, the message and the motives are. In the culture of Ephesus, braided hair was a luxurious status symbol. In that era, it required much time and financial costs. This was the equivalent of modern hairstyles requiring significant time and cost. Those who put so much energy into hairstyles suggest that their emphasis is on themselves, rather than on worshiping God. ❤️PRAYER❤️ Father, I will dress with modesty and respect because through the costly gospel of Jesus that’s the type of heart a redeemed woman in Christ has – modest, respectful, godly, self-controlled, knowing I am precious to God . . . beautiful.
