St. John Mary Vianney
St. John Vianney was born on May 8, 1786 in France. His father was Mathieu Vianney and mother Mary Beluze. When Napoleon withdrew the exemption given to ecclesiastical students from military service, John Vianney was drafted into the army. When he was proceeding to a military post, somebody wrongly guided him to a village named Les Noes, where army deserters were living in a group secretly. John Vianney assumed a new name Jerome Vincent there to prevent detection and opened a school in this name to impart education to village children there. Vianney was very much devoted to St. Philomena. He was ordained a priest on August 12, 1815.He was running a home for poor people to care and feed poor people. His biographer recorded that one day there was only flour to bake only two breads in the poor home. But Vianney prayed and a miracle happened. The flour increased in quantity and they baked 20 breads weighing 20 kilograms each. His biographers also recorded that he had supernatural knowledge about the past and future. He was having powers to cure children from sickness.
St. John Vianney was declared venerable by Pope Pius-IX on October 3, 1874 and declared as blessed by Pope Pius-X on January 8, 1905. He was canonized by Pope Pius-XI on May 31, 1925.
He is the patron saint of all priests. He was also proposed as a model to the parish priests.
