• DAILY GOSPEL — DAY 17

    BE STRONG AND COURAGEOUS

    Joshua 1:9 KJV

“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”

    UNDERSTANDING THE WORD

There are moments in life when moving forward feels frightening.

    We face uncertainty.

    We face difficult decisions.

We face responsibilities that seem greater than our abilities.

And sometimes we wonder whether we have the strength to continue.

In Joshua chapter 1, we find a man facing an enormous responsibility.

    Moses had died.

Joshua had been appointed to lead the children of Israel into the land God had promised them.

The road ahead would not be easy.

    There would be battles.

    There would be opposition.

There would be challenges that Joshua had never faced before.

Yet God spoke these powerful words:

“Be strong and of a good courage…”

    Why could Joshua be courageous?

Was it because he knew everything that lay ahead?

    No.

Was it because he would never experience difficulty?

    No.

Was it because he was strong enough to accomplish everything by himself?

    No.

His courage was rooted in God's promise:

“...for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”

God was calling Joshua to trust His presence, His faithfulness and His Word.

    THE GOSPEL

There is an important difference between biblical courage and simply believing in ourselves.

    The world often tells us:

    “Believe in yourself.”

    “You are strong enough.”

    “You can accomplish anything.”

But Scripture directs our confidence toward God.

Our greatest hope is not found in our own strength.

It is found in Jesus Christ.

    The Bible tells us:

“For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.”
    — Romans 5:6 KJV

    What a powerful reminder.

Christ did not come because humanity was strong enough to save itself.

He came because we needed a Saviour.

Jesus Christ died for our sins and rose again.

Through faith in Him, sinners can be forgiven and reconciled to God.

Our confidence therefore rests in what Christ has accomplished, not in our ability to make ourselves acceptable to God.

And as we follow Him, we continue to depend upon His grace.

    Jesus told His disciples:

“...lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.”
    — Matthew 28:20 KJV

Christ's promise to His disciples reminds us that following Him does not mean walking alone.

    COURAGE TO OBEY GOD

One of the most important parts of Joshua chapter 1 appears just before today's verse.

    God tells Joshua:

“Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law...”
    — Joshua 1:7 KJV

    Notice something important.

Joshua was not simply being told to be brave.

He was being called to obey God's Word.

True biblical courage is not recklessness.

It is not doing whatever we want and assuming God will support every decision.

It is having the courage to do what God says is right.

    Even when obedience is difficult.

    Even when others disagree.

    Even when we are afraid.

Even when following God's Word requires sacrifice.

Sometimes courage means speaking the truth with love.

Sometimes courage means admitting that we were wrong.

Sometimes courage means turning away from sin.

Sometimes courage means forgiving someone who has hurt us.

Sometimes courage means remaining faithful when everyone around us is choosing a different direction.

And sometimes courage simply means taking the next step of obedience when we cannot see the entire road ahead.

    STRENGTH THROUGH GOD'S WORD

    God also told Joshua:

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night...”
    — Joshua 1:8 KJV

Joshua's courage was connected to knowing and obeying God's Word.

That is an important lesson for us today.

When fear begins to overwhelm us, we need more than encouraging words.

We need the truth of Scripture.

God's Word teaches us who He is.

It reminds us of His faithfulness.

    It corrects our thinking.

    It exposes our sin.

And it directs us toward Jesus Christ.

Yesterday we considered the peace of God through Christ Jesus.

Today we are reminded that faith also calls us to live courageously and obediently.

Peace does not mean we will never face difficulties.

And courage does not mean we will never feel afraid.

It means we can continue trusting the Lord while doing what He has called us to do.

Whatever challenge you are facing today, remember:

You do not have to know everything about tomorrow to obey God today.

    Seek Him.

    Read His Word.

    Pray for wisdom.

    Trust His faithfulness.

And take the next faithful step.

    PRAYER

    Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your faithfulness and for the truth of Your Word.

You know the situations in my life that make me afraid.

You know the responsibilities I carry and the uncertainties I face.

Forgive me for the times when fear becomes greater in my thoughts than my trust in You.

Teach me to find courage in Your faithfulness rather than in my own abilities.

Give me wisdom to recognise what is right.

Give me strength to turn away from what is wrong.

And give me courage to obey Your Word even when obedience is difficult.

Help me to remain faithful to Jesus Christ in my thoughts, words, decisions and actions.

When I feel weak, remind me of Your grace.

When I feel uncertain, direct me through Your Word.

And when I am afraid, teach me to trust You.

    In Jesus' name, Amen.

    REFLECTION

Is there something in your life that you know God is calling you to do, but fear is holding you back?

Are you seeking courage through your own abilities, or are you depending upon the Lord?

Take time today to read Joshua chapter 1.

Consider how God's instructions to Joshua connected courage with obedience.

    Then ask yourself:

“What is one step of obedience I can take today, even if I feel afraid?”

  • HE REACHED HEAVEN… BUT HIS NAME WAS MISSING FROM THE BOOK OF LIFE!

This powerful Christian story presents a sobering question: Are we relying on religious activities, or are we genuinely trusting and following Jesus Christ?

A man reaches Heaven's gate with confidence in his years of church attendance, tithes, offerings, seeds, and vows. But an unexpected encounter challenges everything he thought he understood about salvation.

God's Word teaches that we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Our good works do not purchase salvation; rather, genuine faith produces a life of obedience, love, and devotion to God.

Scripture for reflection: Ephesians 2:8–10; Matthew 7:21–23; Revelation 20:15.

May this story encourage us to examine our hearts, seek Christ sincerely, and remain faithful to Him.

  • DAILY GOSPEL — DAY 16

    THE PEACE OF GOD

    Philippians 4:6–7 KJV

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

    UNDERSTANDING THE WORD

There are times when our minds become overwhelmed with worry.

    We think about tomorrow.

    We worry about our families.

    Our responsibilities.

    Our finances.

    Our health.

And situations that seem completely beyond our control.

Sometimes the greatest battles we face are not happening around us.

They are happening within our own thoughts.

But in Philippians 4, the Apostle Paul gives believers an important instruction:

    “Be careful for nothing…”

In this passage, the word “careful” refers to being anxious or consumed by worry.

Paul is not telling us to become careless about our responsibilities.

He is teaching us where to turn when anxiety begins to take hold.

    He continues:

“...but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

    Notice those words:

    “In every thing…”

Nothing in our lives is too insignificant to bring before God.

    We are invited to pray.

To bring our needs before Him.

And to do so with thanksgiving.

Even in difficult circumstances, we can remember God's faithfulness.

    THE GOSPEL

The peace described in this passage is not simply a feeling of calmness.

    Paul tells us:

“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

    Notice the final words:

    “Through Christ Jesus.”

True peace with God is found through Jesus Christ.

    Romans 5:1 says:

“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:”
    — Romans 5:1 KJV

Because of sin, humanity needs reconciliation with God.

Jesus Christ came into this world to save sinners.

He died for our sins and rose again.

Through faith in Him, we can be forgiven and reconciled to God.

This is the foundation of our hope.

Before we speak about finding peace in difficult circumstances, we must understand the greater peace that Christ provides.

    Peace with God.

    Our circumstances may change.

    Our emotions may change.

But the saving work of Jesus Christ remains the foundation of the believer's confidence.

    GUARDING YOUR HEART AND MIND

There is something beautiful about the promise in Philippians 4:7.

    Paul says God's peace:

“...shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

The word “keep” carries the idea of guarding or protecting.

    Think about that.

God's peace is described as guarding the hearts and minds of His people.

This does not mean that Christians will never experience anxiety, sadness or difficult emotions.

It does not mean that prayer automatically removes every problem.

Paul himself experienced suffering, opposition and hardship.

Yet he continued to point believers toward the Lord.

    Yesterday we were reminded:

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
    — 1 Peter 5:7 KJV

Today we see how that trust is expressed.

    Through prayer.

    Through thanksgiving.

Through bringing our requests before God.

And through depending upon Jesus Christ.

When worry begins to fill your mind, turn to God in prayer.

When the future feels uncertain, remember His faithfulness.

When circumstances become overwhelming, seek His wisdom.

And when you cannot understand what is happening, remember that God's peace surpasses human understanding.

    PEACE IN EVERY SEASON

Sometimes we think we will finally have peace when everything in life is settled.

    When the bills are paid.

    When the problems disappear.

    When our plans work out.

    When the future becomes clear.

But the peace of God is not presented in Scripture as something we can experience only when life becomes easy.

Paul wrote these words while facing difficult circumstances himself.

And still, he encouraged believers to pray, give thanks and trust in the Lord.

Perhaps today you are waiting for something to change.

Perhaps you are carrying a burden that nobody else understands.

Perhaps you are struggling with thoughts about what tomorrow might bring.

    Remember this:

You do not need to know everything about tomorrow to bring today's concerns before God.

    Pray.

    Give thanks.

    Seek His Word.

    Trust Christ.

And continue walking faithfully with Him.

    PRAYER

    Heavenly Father,

Thank You that I can come before You with every concern and every burden.

You know the worries that fill my mind and the fears that trouble my heart.

Forgive me for the times when I allow anxiety to consume my thoughts instead of bringing my concerns before You.

Teach me to pray in every circumstance.

Help me to remember Your faithfulness and to approach You with thanksgiving.

When I feel overwhelmed, remind me that my hope is found in Jesus Christ.

Guard my heart and mind with Your peace.

Give me wisdom for the decisions I must make and strength for the responsibilities I must carry.

Help me to trust You even when I do not understand what lies ahead.

May my confidence always rest in Christ.

    In Jesus' name, Amen.

    REFLECTION

What is occupying your thoughts and causing you worry today?

Have you brought that concern before God in prayer?

Take a few moments today to identify what is troubling your heart.

    Pray about it.

    Thank God for His faithfulness.

And ask Him to help you trust Him with what you cannot control.

    Remember:

“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
