  • Can a Believer Lose His Salvation?

    Philippians 2:12–13 Explained

    Philippians 2:12–13 (NKJV)

    12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;

13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

Many people use this passage to argue against eternal salvation. They often say, "Paul told believers to work out their salvation." But is that really what Paul meant?

In this study, we will carefully examine the passage by looking at its context—the verses before it (the antecedent text) and the verses after it (the succedent text). We will also pay close attention to Paul's words.

When reading the Epistles, especially Paul's letters, we must allow the writer to explain himself. We do not think for him. We simply follow his line of thought.

The Antecedent Text (What Came Before)

    Philippians 2:3–4 (NKJV)

3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.

4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

Notice the subject. Paul is talking about how believers should behave toward one another. He is giving instructions about their conduct, not explaining how to be saved.

That same flow of thought continues into verse 12.

    Philippians 2:12 (NKJV)

12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

This is not a salvation verse. It is a conduct verse. Paul is not giving the requirements for receiving salvation. He is speaking to people who are already saved and telling them how they should live.

He says, "You have always obeyed. Continue to do so even when I am absent. Work out your salvation."

In other words, allow your salvation to be seen in your daily conduct. Let the fruit of your salvation become visible.

    Notice something very important:

You cannot work out what God has not first worked in.

God Is the One Working in You

    Philippians 2:13 (NKJV)

13 For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

The word "works" is the Greek word energeō. It means to be at work, to operate, to energize, or to display activity.

HELPS Word Studies explains it like electricity flowing through a wire until a light bulb shines. That is a beautiful picture.

God, by His Spirit living in us, is constantly at work within us. He produces both the desire and the conduct that are in line with His will.

Our responsibility is simply to work out what He is already working in us.

In fact, right conduct is the result of His working, not ours.

The Greek word translated "works" is in the present active participle, showing continuous action. God is continually working in us. He is constantly giving us both the willingness and the character that reflect His good pleasure.

Think again about the light bulb. The bulb does not struggle to shine. The electric current energizes it, and it simply shines.

In the same way, God is in us as our energy, and by His workings in us, His life is seen through us.

The working in is God's part. The working out is simply the expression of what He has already done within.

Paul is teaching conduct, not salvation.

    Salvation Is Never by Works

Our conduct plays no part in obtaining salvation. Salvation is entirely based on what Christ has done.

    Romans 3:20 (NKJV)

20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight...

    Romans 4:5–8 (NKJV)

5 But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.

6 Just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works:

7 "Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered."

8 "Blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin."

    Romans 11:6 (NKJV)

6 And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace.

    Ephesians 2:8–9 (NKJV)

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

    2 Timothy 1:9 (NKJV)

9 Who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace...

    Titus 3:4–5 (NKJV)

4 But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared,

5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us...

The Bible is consistent. Salvation is not by works. It is entirely by God's grace through faith in Christ.

    The Only Condition for Salvation

    Romans 10:9 (NKJV)

9 That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

The only condition is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Our Citizenship Is Already in Heaven

In the same letter, Paul says:

    Philippians 3:20 (NKJV)

20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Notice Paul does not say our citizenship will be in heaven. He says it is in heaven.

Believers are already citizens of heaven.

Therefore, Philippians 2:12–13 cannot be teaching that we must work to keep our salvation. Paul is still talking about our conduct.

What Does "Fear and Trembling" Mean?

The best way to understand the Bible is to let the Bible explain itself.

Where else is the phrase "fear and trembling" used?

    Mark 5:33 (NKJV)

33 But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.

Notice carefully what the verse says. It explains fear and trembling as knowing what had happened to her.

The fear and trembling is the knowing. It is not saying she feared and trembled because she knew. Rather, the Bible explains the phrase itself by adding, "knowing what had happened to her."

In the same way, fear and trembling is the acknowledgment of what God has done in us through Christ. It is the recognition of the wonderful reality of redemption. It is not talking about being afraid of losing salvation.

As we recognize what God has done in us and what He is continually doing in us through Christ, His life becomes visible in our conduct.

Your role in working out is to recognize what is working in you through Christ.

God's role is to work in so that His life is manifested through you.

He is the One producing both the desire and the conduct in you.

He works in you. You work out through knowing what God has worked in you.

To work out means to recognize and know the salvation that God is working in you.

    Work Out, Not Work For

Notice that Paul does not say, "Work for your salvation." He says, "Work out your salvation."

One word makes all the difference.

He is saying, "God is already working in you to produce this salvation. Acknowledge and recognize it so that your salvation can be seen."

"Know what God has done in you, and you will live like the saved person you already are."

"Recognize the workings of God in you, and your conduct will reflect the salvation God has already given you."

The Succedent Text (What Came After)

The verses that follow prove Paul's point.

    Philippians 2:14–16 (NKJV)

14 Do all things without complaining and disputing,

15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,

16 holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain.

Again, Paul is speaking about conduct.

He tells believers how they should live before the world.

Nothing in the context suggests he is discussing how to obtain or keep salvation.

    Conclusion

The person who has believed in the Lord Jesus Christ is eternally saved.

He is instructed to know this so that he can live in a way that reflects the salvation he has already received.

And it is not his own conduct that he produces. It is the conduct of Christ in him.

God's character has now become his conduct.

His conduct does not produce or preserve his salvation.

His salvation remains independent of his conduct.

Our conduct is credited to our salvation, not our salvation credited to our conduct.

I hope this blessed you. Feel free to share it with someone else.

    #LA_VÉRITÉ_À_DÉCOUVRIR

Merci d’Exister. #Hatikvah_555 #Hope #Grace #DailyBread_PainQuotidien #TheSecretOfForgivinessOfSinAndBeingBornAgain

  • Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

    Romans 12:21 ɴᴋᴊᴠ

The Son of God had come to do His Father’s will—whatever the cost. This holy will led Him to Jerusalem, where He was to suffer and be crucified. He knew everything that would happen to Him there. But nothing and no one could dissuade Him from the path of obedience. With great determination He set His face to go to Jerusalem (Lk. 13:34; 9:53).

Before He set out, He sent messengers before Him. They were to make preparations for Him in a Samaritan village (9:52). The Lord had already done much good in Samaria. Many had been saved there. You might have expected that the people there would be friendly towards Him. But far from it! Instead of giving Him a friendly welcome, they rejected Him. How did the disciples react to this? They said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” (9:54). They had only one thing in mind: revenge and retaliation! In Jesus, on the other hand, we see a completely different spirit. He did not impute their transgression to these people (2 Cor. 5:19), for He had not come to resist evil, but to overcome evil with good. He rebuked His disciples and accepted the Samaritans’ rejection with meekness, without grumbling or rebelling in any way. It simply says, “And they went to another village.” Undeterred, He continued on His way to Jerusalem—regardless of the applause or opposition of the people.

How often we discover our behavior resembles that of the disciples! How quickly we are inclined to react harshly when we are wronged and people treat us dismissively. Yet God’s Word specifically calls us not to repay evil with evil (Rom. 12:19; 1 Pet. 3:9), but to show gentleness and meekness towards all people (Phil. 4:5; Tit. 3:2). The meek man who is able to subdue his anger is strong and victorious (Prov. 16:32). Giving in to our anger is easy. But to resist anger and “overcome evil with good” is truly Christian.
