    Precious Jewels

    December 16th, 2025

Curb appeal describes the attractiveness of a home for sale, especially its surroundings when viewed from the street. When we reflect on the beauty of our new home, we might focus on house color, landscaping, and entryways. But, unless you’re an engineer, you don’t usually think of a foundation.

The New Jerusalem’s foundation for the walls isn’t just intended to be a structurally sound base; it’s also beautiful. Today’s text says the “foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones.” The Greek word kosmeo used here means to adorn, garnish, trim, or embellish with honor. The same root word is used by Peter to describe the adornment of a generous, kind heart that is “precious in the sight of God” (1 Peter 3:3, 4).

Since there isn’t a first-century handbook on identifying gems that confirms the exact stones mentioned by John, there is some debate on which minerals he was specifically identifying. However, they appear to parallel with most of the 12 gems on the high priest’s breastplate in Exodus 28. With the names of the apostles on the foundations (Revelation 21:14), perhaps the gems and names combine the Old and New Testament churches, affirming that God’s people from all corners are in the holy city.

The jasper listed in today’s verse could have been chalcedony, agate, opal, or jade. It was the last gem in the high priest’s breastplate (Exodus 28:20). Sapphire here is possibly lapis lazuli, a clear or translucent blue gem that is especially hard. The gem chalcedony is difficult to identify, though the Revised Standard Bible calls it agate. Emerald here is believed to be a gem with a bright green color.

God’s people have been compared to precious stones. Peter described fellow believers as “living stones … being built up” into “a spiritual house” (1 Peter 2:5). Like gems polished in a rock tumbler, the trials of this world have smoothed out the characters of God’s people into jewels for His kingdom. It gives, in the eyes of Jesus, the New Jerusalem real curb appeal!

O Lord, when You make up the jewels for Your kingdom, I long to be one of the gems that adorn the holy city with a character reflecting the likeness of Jesus.

For Further Study: Exodus 28:17–20; Isaiah 54:11, 12; Malachi 3:17

    Key Bible Texts

And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald; (Revelation 21:19 KJV)

  • Loving Work
    By Saint Stuart

When I was younger and not as mature as I am now, I dreaded a vital part of life that I now greatly value and enjoy — working. In my 20s life was a prison to me. I did not choose to be born into this society, yet I was forced to labour for the majority of my life just to survive. My aspirations were to philosophize and write, not drive to some office or factory to do monotonous tasks for the next forty years of my life so I could have a roof over my head and food on the table. I became depressed and unmotivated, even suicidal at one point, as I distracted my anxiety with mind-numbing stimulations. I was smoking cigarettes and weed, binge-watching my favourite shows, playing hours of video games and had an unhealthy addiction to pornography. My bad habits were only conditioning me to further failures in life, socially, financially and emotionally. I didn’t have any motivation to change where my future was headed, preferring to drown in my distractions, and ended up in a hospital one night after failing to kill myself.

Fast-forward ten or so years. I’m living closer to my friends and family, working again and on a path to break free of my addictions. I had big debts haunting me and low-paying jobs sustaining me, so my anxiety was still high, but I pushed myself through it and would soon find myself paying off debts easier than I imagined.

Before my outlook on work changed, I was in jobs that weren’t very labour-intensive. My work experience was in computer programming, graphic design, customer service, cashier and tech support. I was good at it and it paid the bills, but I needed a change as the work was becoming sparse where I was at the time. With a love for gardening and plant care, I soon found myself in my first labour job — landscaping.

  • Joy of My Heart
    Anne G. Lotz

    Our Heavenly Home

    June 16

If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. - John 14:3, NKJV

The first book in the Bible, Genesis, gives us an unforgettable picture of the Lord God. After at least five “days” of intensely creative work, He “planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. And the Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground — trees that were pleasing to the eye” (Gen. 2:8-9, NIV). In my mind’s eye, I can see Him on His hands and knees, grubbing in the dirt, planting trees and flowers and shrubs and grass, watering and pruning and landscaping. God Himself was the first homemaker, preparing a place for His children, Adam and Eve, that would be pleasing to the eye. We can only imagine the joyful eagerness of the divine Gardener as He presented Adam with his lovingly prepared home that was not just adequate or sufficient to meet his needs, but extravagant in its lush beauty and comfort.

But the preparations made for that first earthly home . . . are nothing compared with the preparations being made for our heavenly home!

  • Update: 237 days into this situation. Initially, I received numerous calls and messages asking how others could assist. At the time, I politely declined, unaware of my needs or next steps. After the insurance adjuster's assessment, we waited for tree removal estimates ranging from $15,000 to $40,000. Warrior Tree's $9,000 bid was accepted, and they kindly offered a discount and removed the standing tree. In and Out Trash Services LLC took care of the house at an affordable rate. Unfortunately, contacting a stump grinder has been challenging, but I found Grinder Stump Removal and removed the 2 monster stumps and the hole filled from the 3rd. Also, Big Drew and Sue's landscaping got the borders of the property cleared, the huge trees on the corner removed, and now I am ready to start the rebuild as the preparation stage for construction is completed.

  • Update: Day 65... I initially had adequate funds to rebuild the house with the bsrel endorsements from the insurance company, if I could have moved this house across the street and sold it to the landowner. Regrettably, this option was not viable, and therefore, I will be required to demolish the house and clear the land. I have sufficient funds to rebuild, but my, constraints mean that I do not have enough to cover the costs of both rebuilding and demolishing the house, as well as clearing the land with the existing landscaping. To proceed, I urgently need to obtain a very low bid for the demolition, clearing, and debris removal services. Additionally, I must find a storage shed, approximately 8x8 or 10x10 or larger, to store my belongings, as the monthly storage rental fees, which will be required for the six-month construction period, are unaffordable for me.. Thank you again so very much for your prayers.
