• A WORD FOR YOU.
    (Insights For Life)

    Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations; Deuteronomy 7:9 KJV

    GOD IS A FAITHFUL GOD!
    There are many times we loose faith or trust. Our hopes fades and our minds become weak as a result of pressures, failures and frustrations we experience in life. Our mood and emotions change, our words change - we no longer speak God's Word. Even our commitment to serving God change because nothing seems to align. I'm pretty sure you have once experienced this scenario in your life? But have you noticed that in ALL OF THESE CHANGES, THERE IS ONE CONSTANT, CONSISTENT TRUTH, OUR GOD REMAINS FAITHFUL.

    If God was a man, I'm sure He would constantly react and consequently change as we change our moods, emotions, faith, words and commitments. But he is not - He never reacts, He never changes to good or bad. He remains the same - EVER FAITHFUL.

    Our scripture reference today says: KNOW IT, that our God, HE IS GOD, THE FAITHFUL GOD. You must know and accept this very truth. No matter the situation you find yourself, this truth must be settled within you that God is always FAITHFUL.
    God is not looking for acknowledgement or endorsement to prove he is faithful. He is ever-faithful with or without it. YOUR ACKNOWLEDGMENT ONLY HELPS YOUR DISCOURAGEMENT AND ENHANCES YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

    Today, I encourage you to know it, believe it, declare it and live by this truth: that no matter what happens to me or around me; GOD IS EVER FAITHFUL. In the midst of all the troubles and challenges, failures and frustrations, GOD REMAINS FAITHFUL. He is faithful before, during and after your experiences and expectations. This is how to live right in the kingdom. By this, you create an unbreakable relationship between you and the ever faithful God. God bless this week for you. He will honour your labour with favour in Jesus precious name. Be blessed, Stay refreshed!

    REFLECTING THE CHARACTER OF GOD'S KINGDOM

    Scripture Reading:
    Matthew 6:10 (KJV)
    "Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven."

    Every family has its own identity and culture, yet children from the same home can develop different personalities and character traits. People may explain these differences by saying, "That is simply how they were created." While each person is unique, those who belong to God's Kingdom are called to reflect a shared spiritual character—the character of Christ.

    The Kingdom of God has a culture. It has values, principles, and a way of life that should be evident in the lives of its citizens. Jesus taught us to pray, "Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven." This means that God's will and Kingdom values are to be expressed in our lives here on earth.

    As believers, we should not use our personalities, backgrounds, or natural tendencies as excuses for attitudes and behaviours that contradict God's Word. We may have different temperaments, cultures, and individual personalities, but the character produced in us by the Holy Spirit should increasingly reflect Christ.

    The Kingdom calls us to love, humility, holiness, forgiveness, faithfulness, obedience, and reverence for God. These qualities should not be occasional expressions that depend on our moods. They should become part of who we are as citizens of God's Kingdom.

    Our goal is not to lose our God-given individuality but to allow the Holy Spirit to transform our character so that Christ is seen in us. As we submit to God's Word and the work of the Spirit, our lives begin to reflect the culture of heaven.

    Let the character of Christ become evident in your words, choices, relationships, and daily conduct. You are a citizen of God's Kingdom—live like one.

    Prayer:
    Heavenly Father, thank You for making me a citizen of Your Kingdom through Jesus Christ. Help me to submit to the work of Your Word and Your Spirit so that my character increasingly reflects Christ. Let Your will be done in my life, and may my conduct demonstrate the values of Your Kingdom every day. In Jesus' name, Amen.

  • Good morning, brethren. The second post under Morning devotion every morning has 4 categories. Daily guides for Adult, Youth, Children, and Daily Manna devotionals. You can choose your group that suit you and use it. Thanks.

    1. Morning devotion for today:

    MD.i. MORNING TEA
    THE WORD FOR TODAY
    FRIDAY JULY 17, 2026.
    "ARE YOU 'STEPHEN‘? (4)"

    '…Stephen, a man full of faith…’  Acts 6:5 NIV

    ANOTHER QUALITY that opened the door to leadership in the church for Stephen was: faith. Oswald Chambers said, ‘Faith that is sure of God is the only kind of faith there is.’ When drought hit some farming communities, faith made a little girl take her umbrella to a prayer meeting called especially to pray for rain, while all the grown-ups wore sunglasses. Faith isn’t just what you say, it’s what you do. And it’s not just about what you can do, but what you can trust God to do. When it comes to faith, you must: 1) feed your faith. The Bible is faith food. ‘…Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God’ (Romans 10:17). Note the word ‘hearing’. When you read God’s Word out loud, it enters your spirit through both the eye-gate and ear-gate, doubling its impact. 2) protect your faith. When terrorists attack, they have more in mind than just blowing up a few buildings and killing some people. Their goal is to strike fear into your heart and cause you to capitulate. Jesus warned Peter that his faith was about to come under attack (Luke 22:31-32 NKJV). It’s not just your finances or your health or your relationships that are under attack; it’s your faith! 3) Use your faith. Faith is like money; it’s the currency of God’s kingdom. You must have it in order to do business with God. When Christ encountered someone who demonstrated real faith, He was ecstatic. And He always responded to them. So you must ‘exercise’ your faith daily until it becomes your ‘reflex action’ in any given situation.

    FRIDAY 17TH JULY, 2026```

    *OUR PEACE OFFERING* 🫵🏽🏽‍🏽‍🏽🏽‍🏽

    ```TEXT:LEVITICUS 3:10-13```
    ```KEY VERSE:``` _*"And the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away. And the priest shall burn it upon the altar: it is the food of the offering made by fire unto the LORD" (LEVITICUS 3:10, 11).*_

    *The Hebrew word for "peace" _shalom,_ represents wholeness and right relationship with God, others, and creation. The peace offering, as a voluntary offering, signifies restored relationship with God. This type of offering is indicative of a voluntary expression of faith, thanksgiving, and gratitude.*

    *Our passage today pertains to the detailed instructions given for the peace offerings. These offerings were important for maintaining a harmonious relationship between an individual and God. Specifically, the passage outlines which parts of the animal are to be removed and offered to the Lord. It also gives us the role of the priests in the exercise. The kidneys and the fat signify the best portions of the sacrifice, which were to be dedicated to God. This act of offering the choicest parts is a form of worship and reverence, recognising God's supreme authority and generosity.*

    *From that context, it is clear that such offerings were to be made accurately and respectfully. The focal point of burning these parts was to create a "sweet savour unto the LORD," signifying that the offering was pleasing and acceptable to Him. The prescribed portions for the peace offerings highlight the significance of giving God the best, demonstrating the importance of sacrifice, and dedication in worship.*

    *However while the Old Testament gives us the details of how to make acceptable blood sacrifices, Jesus Christ, in the New Testament, offered up Himself as the Lamb of God who took away our sins on the cross at Calvary. "For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us" (Ephesians 2:14). With Jesus as our peace, we need not kill any animal to make peace for our iniquities, but only embrace Him wholeheartedly. Praise the Lord.*

    ```TEXT:1 TIMOTHY 4:12-16```
    ``` MEMORY VERSE:``` _*"Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity" (1 TIMOTHY 4:12).*_

    *To remain spiritually relevant is very important. Having been born again and backsliding eventually is a sad commentary. Most saints of old served God well and finished strong. Joshua, for example, was a young man who served God under Moses. He was hard working and faithful.*

    *When Moses died, leadership responsibility was transferred to him, he served Israel well till he died at the age of 110. On his leadership impact, the Bible records this about him: "And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua..." (Joshua 24:31).*

    *Joshua was spiritually relevant from his youth to old age and even after death. Being spiritually relevant is not about being popular in the Church. It means to be committed to God, and living an impactful life for His kingdom.*

    *Beloved, maintain your spiritual experiences. Also, be devoted to God by having regular and meaningful quiet time, evangelising and reading, meditating and applying the word of God in your life. Moreover, maintain regular fellowship with the believers (Acts 2:42).*

    ```QUOTE:``` _*Be committed to God.*_
    ```CHALLENGE:``` _*Remain in the faith and impact lives for Christ.*_

    ```2 CORINTHIANS 7:8-12```
    ```Key Verse:``` _*"For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death" (2 Corinthians 7:10).*_

    Margaret, with a tone of regret, called her friend and said, *"If only I had done what I knew was right. If only I had listened to my parents..."* Continuing, she said, *"I wish I could go back and change some decisions I took."*

    She thought about the sinful actions and choices she had made. She regretted not following the advice of her godly parents and living by God's word. Regret is a feeling of sadness about a wrong action or about a mistake made. It is a wish that things could have been different and better.

    Nobody loves the feeling of regret, which many times is avoidable. Regret can come from missed opportunities. It might also arise from poor performance because of poor preparation. Regrets can arise from the pain of disobedience or from bad choices made.

    *The most painful regret everyone must avoid is missing heaven. Surrender your heart totally to Jesus Christ. Achan, Judas Iscariot and Herod probably wished they had made different choices. Avoid eternal pain and regret. Choose to obey God and His word even if you are the only one.*

    ```rayer:``` _*Dear Lord, please help me to always choose to obey You.*_ 🏽
    *BRINGING CHRIST'S PEACE TO OUR RELATIONSHIPS*
    *TEXT:* LEVITICUS 3:10-13.
    10 And the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away.
    11 And the priest shall burn it upon the altar: it is the food of the offering made by fire unto the LORD.
    12 And if his offering be a goat, then he shall offer it before the LORD.
    13 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of it, and kill it before the tabernacle of the congregation: and the sons of Aaron shall sprinkle the blood thereof upon the altar round about.
    *Timeless Truth:*_"For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us"_ (Ephesians 2:14).
    *INTRODUCTION*
    The world, with all its beauty and splendour, will not be a worthy place to live in when peace is absent. The same with families, communities and individuals. Where there is no peace, the world will not even be as habitable as the animal kingdom. A relationship that is void of peace will produce bitterness and wormwood rather than joy or happiness. Peace is multidimensional starting with an individual person's peace which is the most important and the first thing Jesus gives those who come to Him. Then there is peace between man and God which goes simultaneously with true personal and individual peace. Lastly, we talk of peace between fellow human beings. This is the main reason why Jesus, the Prince of peace, came to pay the ultimate price to reconcile man with God. This subject is therefore, very important to God and must be important to anyone that desires to walk with God and work for God. The text gives us some valuable information on this all important subject of peace.
    *1. The Price of Peace*
    a. The price of peace is not cheap as we could notice from what must be sacrificed in the peace offerings offered to God. Anyone who desires to enjoy peace on a platter of gold may be living in the fool's paradise. There is a price to pay. The two kidneys and the fat must be removed from the animal sacrifice and burn as an offering to God on the altar while the remaining animal can be eaten as they wanted. *"And the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away"*. Kidneys are vital organs in the body. When the kidneys are defective or dead, the person is as good as dead. This vital organ is what God demanded for Himself as His own portion of the peace offerings. The fat of the animal gives aroma to the meat and makes it pleasant to eat. Fat is one of the most precious parts of the animal. It is the energy repository of the animal. It is instructive enough that God also reserved the fat to Himself, indirectly showing that consuming too much of fat is not good for human health as shown by modern scientific discovery. *"And the priest shall burn it upon the altar: it is the food of the offering made by fire unto the LORD"*. The kidneys and the fat were burnt for God while the remaining belong to man.
    b. God demands the best for Himself just as the kidneys and the fat are vital parts of the animal. Man, with due respect to God, must give God the best time or hours for fellowship with Him and for devotion with God. The best of man is the heart and so the heart should be given to God. Just as God asked for the kidneys, God is asking man, *"give me your heart"*. The best of man's possessions and treasures should be given to God. Just like the popular hymn says, *"Give of Your Best to the Master".*
    *Question*
    Do you give of your best to the Master in every area?
    *2. The Personification of Peace*
    a. Jesus is our peace offerings and that is the best the Father can give to us. God sacrificed His only begotten Son for the world that is totally void of true peace. Jesus offered Himself to the Lord for our peace. *"And if his offering be a goat, then he shall offer it before the LORD"*. We also must be willing to offer our best that is possible and available for peace.
    *"For he (Jesus) is our peace (offerings), who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us"*. The wall of partition between the Jews and the Gentiles was broken down by Christ so that there would not be enmity between the Jews and the Gentiles any longer. Also, the enmity between God and sinners has been destroyed by the offering up of the living body of Christ. The sinful man can now repent and come into direct fellowship with God. *"Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace"*. This peace offering of Christ makes reconciliation with God an experiential reality. *"And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby"*. Jesus did not only yield His precious body as an offering for sin, His messages are centred on peace. *"And came and preached peace to you..."* (Ephesians 2:14-17).
    b. Though the sacrifice is already done by Christ, man has his own part to play. The sinful man, through the priest, must *"lay his hand upon the head of it, and kill it before the tabernacle of the congregation: and the sons of Aaron shall sprinkle the blood thereof upon the altar round about"*. The sinner must identify with the sacrifice for the transaction of peace to be perfected and effectual. In order to enjoy the peace of God, the sinner must identify with the sacrifice of Christ by accepting it by faith and petition His blood to produce peace in the heart and peace with God.
    *Question*
    Have you identified with the sacrifice of Jesus Christ by faith in Him?
    *3. The Pathway to Peace*
    a. The peace that God first gives is the peace with God which simultaneously results in the release of peace of Christ in the heart. Without peace of Christ in the heart, all other types of peace become elusive. *"Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ"*. The offended God forgives our sins and becomes our loving Father after repentance from sin through faith in the atoning sacrifice of peace offering of Christ. All efforts of man to bring peace to the world, families and relationships without first experiencing the peace of Christ in the heart will not yield a lasting and enduring peace.
    b. Just as Jesus paid a heavy sacrifice for peace, believers in Christ must be willing to pay the price of humility, forgiveness, longsuffering and forbearance among others, so as to enjoy peace with our relations and neighbours. This peace must be pursued at all times because without it there is no heaven. It must also be preached and encouraged among people because *"Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God"* (Matthew 5:9). It is the possession of peace and grace to make peace with others that distinguishes a true child of God as genuine. No price is too high for peace. The problem of the nations is that the nations are being ruled by people who have not experienced the peace of God in their hearts.
    *Prayer Points*
    1.Give praises to Jesus Christ for paying the ultimate price for our peace .
    2.Ask for the peace of God to reign supreme in your heart and to pay any scriptural and needful price to make peace with anyone that you are not at peace with you .
    3.Promise God that you will be committed to the ministry of making peace between sinner and God and fellow man to fellow man. Ask for the grace and the heart to always give your best to the Master .
    4.Pray for where you know that peace is lacking and that the peace of Christ will be embraced and allowed to reign .
    2. Morning Prayer for today.
    MP.i. Morning Prayer
    Rejoice in the Lord always: [and] again I say, Rejoice. ⏤ Philippians 4:4
    We must begin to believe that God, in the mystery of prayer, has entrusted us with a force that can move the Heavenly world, and bring its power down to earth. ⏤ Andrew Murray
    O God, our Father, we thank You for this bright morning. We want to share in the joy that’s all around us. All of Your creation praises You, and we want to join in that praise—not just with our lips, but with our hearts and lives. We want our lives to be like songs that bring joy to those around us. Help us live victoriously today, not letting our cares and trials get the best of us, but keeping Your praise in our hearts even in the darkest times and toughest challenges. Breathe Your Spirit into our souls this morning so that we can go out and live with cheerfulness all day. Don’t let the hard things discourage us or take the joy out of our hearts and the brightness out of our faces.
    We thank You that You’ve promised to give us what we need. We know that while You are always with us, You come even closer to us when we’re in trouble; that while You always give us strength, You give us even more when we’re feeling weak. Come to us today in exactly the way we need.
    Sometimes we get discouraged and frustrated. Keep us today from falling into these negative moods. Help us live among our neighbors in such a way that they see that we have God helping us. Keep us from worry and anxiety. Teach us to cast all our cares on Jesus, who cares for us. May we trust You so completely that no matter what happens, we can be happy and strong in You.
    We pray for everyone in our home. Prepare us for all the duties, tasks, and responsibilities of the day. Keep us safe from accidents and bring us back together again in the evening. We ask all these things, along with the forgiveness of our sins, in the Savior’s precious name. Amen.
The peace offering, as a voluntary offering, signifies restored relationship with God. This type of offering is indicative of a voluntary expression of faith, thanksgiving, and gratitude.* *Our passage today pertains to the detailed instructions given for the peace offerings. These offerings were important for maintaining a harmonious relationship between an individual and God. Specifically, the passage outlines which parts of the animal are to be removed and offered to the Lord. It also gives us the role of the priests in the exercise. The kidneys and the fat signify the best portions of the sacrifice, which were to be dedicated to God. This act of offering the choicest parts is a form of worship and reverence, recognising God's supreme authority and generosity.* *From that context, it is clear that such offerings were to be made accurately and respectfully. The focal point of burning these parts was to create a "sweet savour unto the LORD," signifying that the offering was pleasing and acceptable to Him. The prescribed portions for the peace offerings highlight the significance of giving God the best, demonstrating the importance of sacrifice, and dedication in worship.* *However while the Old Testament gives us the details of how to make acceptable blood sacrifices, Jesus Christ, in the New Testament, offered up Himself as the Lamb of God who took away our sins on the cross at Calvary. "For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us" (Ephesians 2:14). With Jesus as our peace, we need not kill any animal to make peace for our iniquities, but only embrace Him wholeheartedly. Praise the Lord.* ✍🏽```THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:``` _*Any talk about peace that excludes the Prince of Peace is a piece of delusion.*_ 📜📜```THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:``` *EXODUS 1-4*📜📜 Our Peace Offering https://dailymanna.app// *RECOMMENDED GOSPEL HYMNS AND SONGS - GHS 237: PEACE! On his leadership impact, the Bible records this about him: "And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua..." (Joshua 24:31).* *Joshua was spiritually relevant from his youth to old age and even after death. Being spiritually relevant is not about being popular in the Church. It means to be committed to God, and living an impactful life for His kingdom.* *Beloved, maintain your spiritual experiences. Also, be devoted to God by having regular and meaningful quiet time, evangelising and reading, meditating and applying the word of God in your life. She regretted not following the advice of her godly parents and living by God's word. Regret is a feeling of sadness about a wrong action or about a mistake made. It is a wish that things could have been different and better. Nobody loves the feeling of regret, which many times is avoidable. Regret can come from missed opportunities. It might also arise from poor performance because of poor preparation. Regrets can arise from the pain of disobedience or from bad choices made. *The most painful regret everyone must avoid is missing heaven. Surrender your heart totally to Jesus Christ. The same with families, communities and individuals. Where there is no peace, the world will not even be as habitable as the animal kingdom. A relationship that is void of peace will produce bitterness and wormwood rather than joy or happiness. Peace is multidimensional starting with an individual person's peace which is the most important and the first thing Jesus gives those who come to Him. Then there is peace between man and God which goes simultaneously with true personal and individual peace. Lastly, we talk of peace between fellow human beings. This is the main reason why Jesus, the Prince of peace, came to pay the ultimate price to reconcile man with God. This subject is therefore, very important to God and must be important to anyone that desires to walk with God and work for God. The text gives us some valuable information on this all important subject of peace. *1. The Price of Peace* a. The price of peace is not cheap as we could notice from what must be sacrificed in the peace offerings offered to God. Anyone who desires to enjoy peace on a platter of gold may be living in the fool's paradise. There is a price to pay. The two kidneys and the fat must be removed from the animal sacrifice and burn as an offering to God on the altar while the remaining animal can be eaten as they wanted. *"And the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away"*. Kidneys are vital organs in the body. When the kidneys are defective or dead, the person is as good as dead. This vital organ is what God demanded for Himself as His own portion of the peace offerings. The fat of the animal gives aroma to the meat and makes it pleasant to eat. Fat is one of the most precious parts of the animal. It is the energy repository of the animal. It is instructive enough that God also reserved the fat to Himself, indirectly showing that consuming too much of fat is not good for human health as shown by modern scientific discovery. *"And the priest shall burn it upon the altar: it is the food of the offering made by fire unto the LORD"*. The kidneys and the fat were burnt for God while the remaining belong to man. b. God demands the best for Himself just as the kidneys and the fat are vital parts of the animal. Man, with due respect to God, must give God the best time or hours for fellowship with Him and for devotion with God. The best of man is the heart and so the heart should be given to God. Just as God asked for the kidneys, God is asking man, *"give me your heart"*. The best of man's possessions and treasures should be given to God. Just like the popular hymn says, *"Give of Your Best to the Master".* *Question* Do you give of your best to the Master in every area? *2. The Personification of Peace* a. Jesus is our peace offerings and that is the best the Father can give to us. God sacrificed His only begotten Son for the world that is totally void of true peace. Jesus offered Himself to the Lord for our peace. *"And if his offering be a goat, then he shall offer it before the LORD"*. We also must be willing to offer our best that is possible and available for peace. *"For he (Jesus) is our peace (offerings), who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us"*. The wall of partition between the Jews and the Gentiles was broken down by Christ so that there would not be enmity between the Jews and the Gentiles any longer. Also, the enmity between God and sinners has been destroyed by the offering up of the living body of Christ. The sinful man can now repent and come into direct fellowship with God. *"Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace"*. This peace offering of Christ makes reconciliation with God an experiential reality. *"And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby"*. Jesus did not only yield His precious body as an offering for sin, His messages are centred on peace. *"And came and preached peace to you..."* (Ephesians 2:14-17). b. Though the sacrifice is already done by Christ, man has his own part to play. The sinful man, through the priest, must *"lay his hand upon the head of it, and kill it before the tabernacle of the congregation: and the sons of Aaron shall sprinkle the blood thereof upon the altar round about"*. The sinner must identify with the sacrifice for the transaction of peace to be perfected and effectual. In order to enjoy the peace of God, the sinner must identify with the sacrifice of Christ by accepting it by faith and petition His blood to produce peace in the heart and peace with God. *Question* Have you identified with the sacrifice of Jesus Christ by faith in Him? *3. The Pathway to Peace* a. The peace that God first gives is the peace with God which simultaneously results in the release of peace of Christ in the heart. Without peace of Christ in the heart, all other types of peace become elusive. *"Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ"*. The offended God forgives our sins and becomes our loving Father after repentance from sin through faith in the atoning sacrifice of peace offering of Christ. All efforts of man to bring peace to the world, families and relationships without first experiencing the peace of Christ in the heart will not yield a lasting and enduring peace. b. Just as Jesus paid a heavy sacrifice for peace, believers in Christ must be willing to pay the price of humility, forgiveness, longsuffering and forbearance among others, so as to enjoy peace with our relations and neighbours. This peace must be pursued at all times because without it there is no heaven. It must also be preached and encouraged among people because *"Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God"* (Matthew 5:9). It is the possession of peace and grace to make peace with others that distinguishes a true child of God as genuine. No price is too high for peace. The problem of the nations is that the nations are being ruled by people who have not experienced the peace of God in their hearts. *Prayer Points* 1.Give praises to Jesus Christ for paying the ultimate price for our peace 🙏. 2.Ask for the peace of God to reign supreme in your heart and to pay any scriptural and needful price to make peace with anyone that you are not at peace with you 🙏. 3.Promise God that you will be committed to the ministry of making peace between sinner and God and fellow man to fellow man. Ask for the grace and the heart to always give your best to the Master 🙏. 4.Pray for where you know that peace is lacking and that the peace of Christ will be embraced and allowed to reign 🙏. *HYMN:* When peace like a river *BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:* EXODUS 1-4. 2.   • EVIDENCE OF OCCULT OPPRESSION AND SUBJECTION. Part 1 of 3
    We must distinguish between general oppression and occult oppression and subjection. The symptoms may be similar in many respects, but in several important aspects they are not. The marks of occult involvement are easily distinguished to one experienced in this particular area of deliverance.
    As a result of failing to distinguish between occult oppression and general demonic oppression issuing from other causes, many who have had prayer for deliverance have not been permanently set free. As we will show, those who have been involved in occultism have opened a "door" of access to oppressing spirits which they themselves must close by positive action and faith on their part. Moreover, liberation from occult oppression or subjection requires proper understanding of its peculiar nature and cause, the specific method of deliverance required, and the spiritual responsibilities of the one who has received deliverance from occult oppression.
    General oppression, whether mental, physical, or spiritual, may result from any one of several causes. For example, it may result from some traumatic experience, sin, weakness, emotional crisis, resentment, hate, pride, fear, or illness. Occult oppression and subjection, however, always result from an individual's involvement in some form of fortunetelling, magic practice, spiritism, or false religious cult, either as practitioner, or, as is most often the case, as subject, follower, or participant.
    Moreover, experience has shown that it is possible for a person to be "passively" subjected or oppressed, even though he has never actively participated in the occult. The Biblical basis for this fact is Exodus 20:3-6: God's "curse" falls upon "the children unto the third and fourth generation" of those who violate His commandment by calling upon other gods (demonic spirits and powers), which they do through involvement in the occult, for the purpose of breaking through the bounds which God has set for man.
    The magnitude of the sin of occult involvement, which is an abomination to God (Deuteronomy 18:12), is confirmed by its deep power of enslavement, not only upon the participants themselves, but even upon their descendants. The reality of such passive oppression and subjection has been shown in the preceding study.
    Both from Scripture and from experience it is evident that evil spirits who oppress human victims are of various kinds, and work in a variety of ways. There are blind spirits, deaf spirits, epileptic spirits, deceiving spirits, and lying spirits; spirits of pride, intellectualism, lust, infirmity, insanity, homosexuality, suicide, fear, apathy, anger, discord, strife, hate, resentment, depression, stubbornness, misunderstanding, gossip, obscenity, and many others. Oppression may be subjective, such as insanity, lust, or loss of health through disease and affliction; or objective, in which case the victim may be plagued by demonic apparitions and voices, or troubled by discord and strife through vexation by evil spirits.
    These malevolent spirits are definite personalities, not mere habits, diseases, psychological conditions, or states of mind. Just as human beings vary in personality, power, ability, appetites, intelligence, and purpose, so do the demonic spirits. Their primary intention, as disembodied spirits, is to oppress or possess a person appealing to their particular nature or appetites, in order to hide, as it were, behind these traits, habits, weaknesses, and mental or physical conditions, and thereby escape detection.
    An individual given to sexual looseness and excess, for instance, opens the door to demonic control in this particular area of his life by a spirit of lust with this characteristic appetite. The same would be true concerning a person who has a violent temper which he does not bring under control, or those who are given to pride, jealousy, hate, depression, gluttony, drug addiction, or any other weakness of character, mind or body. Demonic spirits seek to oppress those whose make-up, character, temperament, appetites, and moral, mental, or physical weaknesses are most harmonious to themselves. They bury themselves in the very structure of the person and actually identify with the personality of the victim insofar as possible.
    This is why it is difficult for the novice to discern, or the medical doctor, psychologist, and psychiatrist to admit, the reality and activity of demonic spirits in such victims. The latter reduce such diseases as epilepsy, cancer, blindness and deafness, as well as abnormal personality and behavior problems, to functional or organic disorders. Hence, the presence and activity of demonic spirits in their victims are often described by other terms such as: complexes, habits, drives, hallucinations, delusions, delirium tremens, insanity, epilepsy, melancholia, masochism, homosexuality, schizophrenia, mania, depression, psychoneurosis, psychosis, compulsions, drug addiction, disease, and so on. Not that the terms are entirely inaccurate, but in many cases they are inadequate. They do not go deep enough in identifying the conditions and phenomena connected with the work of the powers of darkness in the lives of the oppressed.
    Likewise, the parapsychologist describes the various manifestations of demonic powers by such terms as clairvoyance, telepathy, extrasensory perception, eidetic imagery, hypnotic suggestion, precognition, telesthesia, psychic phenomena, and so forth. He holds that such paranormal abilities and powers are merely manifestations and projections of the human subconscious or psyche, or that they can be explained in some other natural and rational manner as a rule.
    Thus, the presence and activity of such personal entities as demonic spirits are not easily perceptible to the analytical investigators of the paranormal, for the precise reason that Satan does not publicly announce his presence and work in an individual by handing out "calling cards"!
    However, growing numbers of psychologists, psychiatrists, and physicians are beginning to see and admit that they can no longer dismiss demonic oppression as mere religious delusion or pagan superstition. They are finding it to be a dreadful reality, and that there are definite limits beyond which medicine and psychiatry cannot penetrate to bring the necessary liberation to the suffering individual.
    In one instance, the church which a certain person pastored was contacted by a Christian psychologist asking for prayer for the deliverance of one of his patients. He recognized that the woman was bound and oppressed by Satan and that he was unable to help her with mere technical knowledge and skills. After the church prayed in faith for her liberation in the Name of Jesus, the psychologist reported that she had been set free. He was then able to counsel effectively with her, which he had been unable to do previously.
    Dr. William S. Reed, a well-known American surgeon, was reported to have said that he, as a surgeon, was convinced that many psychological and physical illnesses are the result of demonic attacks upon the individual; that on the basis of Mark 16:17, he himself used exorcism (casting out of evil spirits) when guided to do so; and that modern medicine and psychiatry should seriously consider the ministry of exorcism.
    Often the connections between occult involvement and the oppression which results are so subtle that people are completely unaware of the insidious relationship until it is pointed out. For instance, who would have connected the chronic physical illness of Mrs. L. with her visit to a fortune teller? Mr. R. did not believe that his playing with the ouija board had any adverse spiritual effects upon him until it was manifested in his inability to exercise faith to receive the Holy Spirit. For many years Mrs. T. was unaware that her persistent marital problems and apathy toward life began the day after her participation in a seance. And who would have seen the cause of the chronic phobias and doubts of another person who had been healed as an infant by an occult or magic healer?
    Mr. B. regularly visited fortune tellers, but did not realize until it was shown him that this accounted for an uncontrollable spirit of lust, from which he could not escape, and also explained his pride, indifference, immaturity, and hate. A brutal, demon possessed child, subject to periods of violent rage, was the result of the parents' participation in the occult, but this was unknown until counseling revealed the cause. Mrs. C. suffered from severe depression and thoughts of self destruction, little realizing that her participation in seances was the cause.
    Miss W. had been committed to a mental institution at one time, spent much money visiting doctors, psychologists, and psychiatrists, and had sought help and counseling from many sources concerning her psychotic condition, all to no avail. Little did she realize that it resulted from her past fortunetelling practices and other occult connections. Likewise, Mrs. G. was unaware that her visits to the fortune tellers were responsible for the "voices" she heard and demonic apparitions she saw, until this was shown her in counseling. Who would have seen a connection between the morbid depression and extreme negativism of Mr. V. and his visits to meetings of Spiritualists and other religious cults such as Theosophy and Rosicrucians, even though he only went out of curiosity?
    Homosexuality and fear of crowds were the result of another individual's involvement in the practice of table-tipping and consulting the ouija board as a child. The rapid mental and physical deterioration of another victim of occult oppression was traced to submission to hypnotism and treatment by "Concept Therapy." Mrs. D. found through counseling that her depression and lack of desire for spiritual things followed her visit to a fortune teller. Although he had prepared for the ministry, Mr. T. later fell back into the world, was divorced, and lost interest in Christianity. He was then surprised to learn that his troubles stemmed from his practice of self-hypnosis, astrology, and other occult interests.
    The removal of warts by magic charming and involvement in other magic practices has resulted in alcoholism, oppression by sex spirits, and other forms of demonic oppression in some cases. The parents' participation in occult practices resulted in a young man and a young woman being oppressed by demonic apparitions and vexed with other problems. Palm reading was the cause of one woman's serious domestic problems, and another's oppression in which she heard voices and saw a ghostly apparition.
    Water dowsing explained the resistance of one man to the Scriptural teaching concerning the Holy Spirit. It was also the cause of another's vexation with a serious problem over which he could not achieve victory, and resulted in insanity to still another who practiced this ancient heathen method of divining. Playing with the ouija board and visits to fortunetellers led Mrs. F. to attempt suicide. The consequence of having a burn "blown" away by magic charming was severe depression for Mrs. R. The relation between the mental illness of Mrs. A. and her practice of table-tipping as a child seemed remote until she experienced immediate liberation upon confessing this occult sin and receiving prayer for deliverance.
    Another, who could have no assurance of salvation, due to oppression by a deceiving spirit, was delivered when she was shown the connection between her mental suffering and a healing she had received from a psychometric healer who diagnosed her illness by touch. Chronic asthma was the consequence of involvement in magical practices, from which a sufferer was set free upon learning of the cause. Liberation from severe mental, physical, and spiritual oppression came to another who fell victim to the insidious powers of darkness after visits to Spiritualists' meetings, while another was set free from psychic subjection which resulted from occult practices, when shown the source and nature of her extrasensory powers.
    The examples from this certain pastor’s files could be multiplied, for there are few families in which at least one member has not had contact with occult spirits in one form or another, with its resultant oppression or subjection. Although few people are aware of the various forms in which occult oppression and subjection express themselves, there is no doubt that occult involvement always results in bondage. This conclusion is based on a pastor’s experiences in deliverance. First he had established the connection between the occult involvement and the bondage, then the oppressed individual confessed his occult sins and commanded Satan to depart. The result is always the same: the person is delivered. In instances where the individual was also psychically subjected (having extrasensory powers, seeing apparitions, hearing spirit voices, and so on), these experiences have immediately ceased, thereby proving their occult source.
    A distinction should be made between "subjection" and "oppression" resulting from occult involvement. Subjection means that malevolent spirits have brought the victim under the domination and control of the powers of darkness. The victim has been made subject to, or enslaved by, such things as sexual lust, violent temper, drugs, uncontrollable thoughts, resistance to divine things, compulsive behavior, lying, hate, religious delusions, self-pity, or forms of occultism. A person thus subjected often becomes psychic himself, and is so enslaved by occultism that he lacks the will, and sometimes even the desire, to be set free.
    Oppression resulting from occult involvement means that the victim has been afflicted with some form of mental, physical, emotional, or psychic ailment or distress such as depression, fear, mental illness, disease, pain, apathy, marital discord, compulsive thoughts of suicide, apparitions, and so forth.
    The characteristics listed in the rest of this study are evidences of occult subjection and oppression. Some of these symptoms may result from other causes, but the existence of any of these manifestations usually indicates the presence and activity of demonic spirits, as well as the need for deliverance.
    Occult subjection and oppression may be classified for clarification into five categories: Mental and Emotional; Psychic; Spiritual; Physical; Material, Domestic, and Social.
    A. Mental and Emotional Disturbances and Abnormalities.
    Contrary to common wisdom, many psychoneuroses, psychoses, and other mental and emotional abnormalities result, not from functional or organic causes, but from occult involvement. Some of the following symptoms could be classified as "psychic" disturbances or abnormalities in character; however, we will purposely be limiting our later discussion of "psychic" subjection and oppression to the strict parapsychological sense of the term, namely, to extrasensory functioning, such as clairvoyance, telepathy, and precognition, and to such psychic phenomena as apparitions or poltergeist activity. Note further that "mental and emotional" does not necessarily imply "inward," but many of the following mental and emotional disturbances and abnormalities will also affect the outward behavior of the oppressed individual.
    1. Psychoses indicative of occult oppression or subjection.
    Symptoms in this category include serious, prolonged depression or melancholia; resignation to failure or misfortune; habitual gloominess, morbidity and negativism, boredom and indifference (ennui), as well as apathy in general.
    Persons thus afflicted are often more interested in their own inward thoughts than in what goes on around them, and may respond in an abnormal, dull manner to others and to reality. They manifest extreme introversion; that is, they live within themselves and take no interest in their surroundings. At times they shun others, withdrawing and spending long periods of time alone, sometimes in a darkened room with the shades drawn, in a morose state of mind. Excessive weeping may also accompany this condition, as well as self-accusation of sins, frequently with thoughts of self-destruction. Such individuals often lack normal emotional response and contact with reality. They live in a private world where little affects them except their own fantasies and dreams.
    In some oppressed persons, this state of depression alternates with a directly opposite mood of extreme joy, happiness, exhilaration, and optimistic outlook. This mental disorder, known as manic-depressive psychosis, is characterized by extreme, sudden changes in mood, fluctuating up and down, often without warning.
    Delusions, so-called hallucinations, and psychic oppression are frequently present in victims of occult involvement who have become psychotic. There may be compulsive thoughts of violence and aggression, and destructive emotions of hate, rage, resentment, jealousy, suspicion, envy, malice, and other antisocial abnormalities. Great excitement and perturbation over trivial matters, and other indications of mania are often seen, as well as unpredictable impulses, moods, actions, and other psychopathic indications of insanity.
    There is often found in such persons a continual "flight of ideas." The individual goes off on one tangent or another, often without completing a thought, and there is a general incoherence of thoughts and ideas. Generally, they are irresponsible, unpredictable, and undependable. Unreasonable attitudes or demands are characteristic of demonic activity in such persons.
    As a result of occult involvement, some individuals are in subjection to extreme and uncontrollable passions and appetites. Vile language, sexual allusions or displays are common, together with inexplicable character or personality changes toward moral degeneracy. There may be found such sexual aberrations as homosexuality, masochism, self-abuse, promiscuity, sadism, abnormal sexuality, uncontrollable lustful thoughts and images, and suggestive behavior and dress.
    The presence and activity of demonic powers is also indicated by enslavement to evil habits such as drug addiction, gluttony (compulsive eating), addiction to alcohol or tobacco, compulsive gambling, and many other forms of excess and intemperance.
    2. Psychoneuroses indicative of occult oppression and subjection.
    A neurotic person exhibits symptoms such as persistent, chronic fear or dread. Generally, there is a morbid anxiety that something dreadful is about to happen, or that one has not done something he ought to have done, or has done something that he should not have done, and so on. There are often feelings of apprehension, consternation, panic and hysteria, or evidence of strong nervous tension. The individual often works and lives at a frenzied pace, frequently suffering insomnia and extreme restlessness. Other abnormalities seen in neurotics include difficulty in making decisions, inability to adjust normally to certain situations, and the need of constant guidance and reassurance by others because of personal feelings of inadequacy and immaturity, or the fear of failure. Extreme hypersensitivity, irritability, and impatience are common. The individual is often ill-humored, argumentative, defiant, negative, always "on the defensive," and highly critical of others in an effort to justify his own deep feelings of inadequacy.
    The most pathetic and difficult forms of neurotic oppression to deal with are the deep-rooted feelings of self-pity and the abnormal desire for attention found in some individuals. They dread being alone for any length of time and have need of constant companionship and conversation. They often feel mistreated, misunderstood, misrepresented, and disliked by others. Frequently, they develop some psychosomatic ailment or disease as a result of the subconscious desire for attention, in order to find escape through sickness from the problems and perplexities of life. Such persons, called "hypochondriacs," seek to control and manipulate others by the shrewd use of their illness. Their households and families are forced to adjust to their abnormal life and whims, sacrificing everything for their personal comfort. Edited. Shared.
    ❤️EVIDENCE OF OCCULT OPPRESSION AND SUBJECTION. Part 1 of 3 We must distinguish between general oppression and occult oppression and subjection. The symptoms may be similar in many respects, but in several important aspects they are not. The marks of occult involvement are easily distinguished to one experienced in this particular area of deliverance. As a result of failing to distinguish between occult oppression and general demonic oppression issuing from other causes, many who have had prayer for deliverance have not been permanently set free. As we will show, those who have been involved in occultism have opened a "door" of access to oppressing spirits which they themselves must close by positive action and faith on their part. Moreover, liberation from occult oppression or subjection requires proper understanding of its peculiar nature and cause, the specific method of deliverance required, and the spiritual responsibilities of the one who has received deliverance from occult oppression. General oppression, whether mental, physical, or spiritual, may result from any one of several causes. For example, it may result from some traumatic experience, sin, weakness, emotional crisis, resentment, hate, pride, fear, or illness. Occult oppression and subjection, however, always result from an individual's involvement in some form of fortunetelling, magic practice, spiritism, or false religious cult, either as practitioner, or, as is most often the case, as subject, follower, or participant. Moreover, experience has shown that it is possible for a person to be "passively" subjected or oppressed, even though he has never actively participated in the occult. The Biblical basis for this fact is Exodus 20:3-6: God's "curse" falls upon "the children unto the third and fourth generation" of those who violate His commandment by calling upon other gods (demonic spirits and powers), which they do through involvement in the occult, for the purpose of breaking through the bounds which God has set for man. The magnitude of the sin of occult involvement, which is an abomination to God (Deuteronomy 18:12), is confirmed by its deep power of enslavement, not only upon the participants themselves, but even upon their descendants. The reality of such passive oppression and subjection has been shown in the preceding study. Both from Scripture and from experience it is evident that evil spirits who oppress human victims are of various kinds, and work in a variety of ways. There are blind spirits, deaf spirits, epileptic spirits, deceiving spirits, and lying spirits; spirits of pride, intellectualism, lust, infirmity, insanity, homosexuality, suicide, fear, apathy, anger, discord, strife, hate, resentment, depression, stubbornness, misunderstanding, gossip, obscenity, and many others. Oppression may be subjective, such as insanity, lust, or loss of health through disease and affliction; or objective, in which case the victim may be plagued by demonic apparitions and voices, or troubled by discord and strife through vexation by evil spirits. These malevolent spirits are definite personalities, not mere habits, diseases, psychological conditions, or states of mind. Just as human beings vary in personality, power, ability, appetites, intelligence, and purpose, so do the demonic spirits. Their primary intention, as disembodied spirits, is to oppress or possess a person appealing to their particular nature or appetites, in order to hide, as it were, behind these traits, habits, weaknesses, and mental or physical conditions, and thereby escape detection. An individual given to sexual looseness and excess, for instance, opens the door to demonic control in this particular area of his life by a spirit of lust with this characteristic appetite. The same would be true concerning a person who has a violent temper which he does not bring under control, or those who are given to pride, jealousy, hate, depression, gluttony, drug addiction, or any other weakness of character, mind or body. Demonic spirits seek to oppress those whose make-up, character, temperament, appetites, and moral, mental, or physical weaknesses are most harmonious to themselves. They bury themselves in the very structure of the person and actually identify with the personality of the victim insofar as possible. This is why it is difficult for the novice to discern, or the medical doctor, psychologist, and psychiatrist to admit, the reality and activity of demonic spirits in such victims. The latter reduce such diseases as epilepsy, cancer, blindness and deafness, as well as abnormal personality and behavior problems, to functional or organic disorders. Hence, the presence and activity of demonic spirits in their victims are often described by other terms such as: complexes, habits, drives, hallucinations, delusions, delirium tremens, insanity, epilepsy, melancholia, masochism, homosexuality, schizophrenia, mania, depression, psychoneurosis, psychosis, compulsions, drug addiction, disease, and so on. Not that the terms are entirely inaccurate, but in many cases they are inadequate. They do not go deep enough in identifying the conditions and phenomena connected with the work of the powers of darkness in the lives of the oppressed. Likewise, the parapsychologist describes the various manifestations of demonic powers by such terms as clairvoyance, telepathy, extrasensory perception, eidetic imagery, hypnotic suggestion, precognition, telesthesia, psychic phenomena, and so forth. He holds that such paranormal abilities and powers are merely manifestations and projections of the human subconscious or psyche, or that they can be explained in some other natural and rational manner as a rule. Thus, the presence and activity of such personal entities as demonic spirits are not easily perceptible to the analytical investigators of the paranormal, for the precise reason that Satan does not publicly announce his presence and work in an individual by handing out "calling cards"! However, growing numbers of psychologists, psychiatrists, and physicians are beginning to see and admit that they can no longer dismiss demonic oppression as mere religious delusion or pagan superstition. They are finding it to be a dreadful reality, and that there are definite limits beyond which medicine and psychiatry cannot penetrate to bring the necessary liberation to the suffering individual. In one instance, the church which a certain person pastored was contacted by a Christian psychologist asking for prayer for the deliverance of one of his patients. He recognized that the woman was bound and oppressed by Satan and that he was unable to help her with mere technical knowledge and skills. After the church prayed in faith for her liberation in the Name of Jesus, the psychologist reported that she had been set free. He was then able to counsel effectively with her, which he had been unable to do previously. Dr. William S. Reed, a well-known American surgeon, was reported to have said that he, as a surgeon, was convinced that many psychological and physical illnesses are the result of demonic attacks upon the individual; that on the basis of Mark 16:17, he himself used exorcism (casting out of evil spirits) when guided to do so; and that modern medicine and psychiatry should seriously consider the ministry of exorcism. Often the connections between occult involvement and the oppression which results are so subtle that people are completely unaware of the insidious relationship until it is pointed out. For instance, who would have connected the chronic physical illness of Mrs. L. with her visit to a fortune teller? Mr. R. did not believe that his playing with the ouija board had any adverse spiritual effects upon him until it was manifested in his inability to exercise faith to receive the Holy Spirit. For many years Mrs. T. was unaware that her persistent marital problems and apathy toward life began the day after her participation in a seance. And who would have seen the cause of the chronic phobias and doubts of another person who had been healed as an infant by an occult or magic healer? Mr. B. regularly visited fortune tellers, but did not realize until it was shown him that this accounted for an uncontrollable spirit of lust, from which he could not escape, and also explained his pride, indifference, immaturity, and hate. A brutal, demon possessed child, subject to periods of violent rage, was the result of the parents' participation in the occult, but this was unknown until counseling revealed the cause. Mrs. C. suffered from severe depression and thoughts of self destruction, little realizing that her participation in seances was the cause. Miss W. had been committed to a mental institution at one time, spent much money visiting doctors, psychologists, and psychiatrists, and had sought help and counseling from many sources concerning her psychotic condition, all to no avail. Little did she realize that it resulted from her past fortunetelling practices and other occult connections. Likewise, Mrs. G. was unaware that her visits to the fortune tellers were responsible for the "voices" she heard and demonic apparitions she saw, until this was shown her in counseling. Who would have seen a connection between the morbid depression and extreme negativism of Mr. V. and his visits to meetings of Spiritualists and other religious cults such as Theosophy and Rosicrucians, even though he only went out of curiosity? Homosexuality and fear of crowds were the result of another individual's involvement in the practice of table-tipping and consulting the ouija board as a child. The rapid mental and physical deterioration of another victim of occult oppression was traced to submission to hypnotism and treatment by "Concept Therapy." Mrs. D. found through counseling that her depression and lack of desire for spiritual things followed her visit to a fortune teller. Although he had prepared for the ministry, Mr. T. later fell back into the world, was divorced, and lost interest in Christianity. He was then surprised to learn that his troubles stemmed from his practice of self-hypnosis, astrology, and other occult interests. The removal of warts by magic charming and involvement in other magic practices has resulted in alcoholism, oppression by sex spirits, and other forms of demonic oppression in some cases. The parents' participation in occult practices resulted in a young man and a young woman being oppressed by demonic apparitions and vexed with other problems. Palm reading was the cause of one woman's serious domestic problems, and another's oppression in which she heard voices and saw a ghostly apparition. Water dowsing explained the resistance of one man to the Scriptural teaching concerning the Holy Spirit. It was also the cause of another's vexation with a serious problem over which he could not achieve victory, and resulted in insanity to still another who practiced this ancient heathen method of divining. Playing with the ouija board and visits to fortunetellers led Mrs. F. to attempt suicide. The consequence of having a burn "blown" away by magic charming was severe depression for Mrs. R. The relation between the mental illness of Mrs. A. and her practice of table-tipping as a child seemed remote until she experienced immediate liberation upon confessing this occult sin and receiving prayer for deliverance. Another, who could have no assurance of salvation, due to oppression by a deceiving spirit, was delivered when she was shown the connection between her mental suffering and a healing she had received from a psychometric healer who diagnosed her illness by touch. Chronic asthma was the consequence of involvement in magical practices, from which a sufferer was set free upon learning of the cause. Liberation from severe mental, physical, and spiritual oppression came to another who fell victim to the insidious powers of darkness after visits to Spiritualists' meetings, while another was set free from psychic subjection which resulted from occult practices, when shown the source and nature of her extrasensory powers. The examples from this certain pastor’s files could be multiplied, for there are few families in which at least one member has not had contact with occult spirits in one form or another, with its resultant oppression or subjection. Although few people are aware of the various forms in which occult oppression and subjection express themselves, there is no doubt that occult involvement always results in bondage. This conclusion is based on a pastor’s experiences in deliverance. First he had established the connection between the occult involvement and the bondage, then the oppressed individual confessed his occult sins and commanded Satan to depart. The result is always the same: the person is delivered. In instances where the individual was also psychically subjected (having extrasensory powers, seeing apparitions, hearing spirit voices, and so on), these experiences have immediately ceased, thereby proving their occult source. A distinction should be made between "subjection" and "oppression" resulting from occult involvement. Subjection means that malevolent spirits have brought the victim under the domination and control of the powers of darkness. The victim has been made subject to, or enslaved by, such things as sexual lust, violent temper, drugs, uncontrollable thoughts, resistance to divine things, compulsive behavior, lying, hate, religious delusions, self-pity, or forms of occultism. A person thus subjected often becomes psychic himself, and is so enslaved by occultism that he lacks the will, and sometimes even the desire, to be set free. Oppression resulting from occult involvement means that the victim has been afflicted with some form of mental, physical, emotional, or psychic ailment or distress such as depression, fear, mental illness, disease, pain, apathy, marital discord, compulsive thoughts of suicide, apparitions, and so forth. The characteristics listed in the rest of this study are evidences of occult subjection and oppression. Some of these symptoms may result from other causes, but the existence of any of these manifestations usually indicates the presence and activity of demonic spirits, as well as the need for deliverance. Occult subjection and oppression may be classified for clarification into five categories: Mental and Emotional; Psychic; Spiritual; Physical; Material, Domestic, and Social. A. Mental and Emotional Disturbances and Abnormalities. Contrary to common wisdom, many psychoneuroses, psychoses, and other mental and emotional abnormalities result, not from functional or organic causes, but from occult involvement. Some of the following symptoms could be classified as "psychic" disturbances or abnormalities in character; however, we will purposely be limiting our later discussion of "psychic" subjection and oppression to the strict parapsychological sense of the term, namely, to extrasensory functioning, such as clairvoyance, telepathy, and precognition, and to such psychic phenomena as apparitions or poltergeist activity. Note further that "mental and emotional" does not necessarily imply "inward," but many of the following mental and emotional disturbances and abnormalities will also affect the outward behavior of the oppressed individual. 1. Psychoses indicative of occult oppression or subjection. Symptoms in this category include serious, prolonged depression or melancholia; resignation to failure or misfortune; habitual gloominess, morbidity and negativism, boredom and indifference (ennui), as well as apathy in general. Persons thus afflicted are often more interested in their own inward thoughts than in what goes on around them, and may respond in an abnormal, dull manner to others and to reality. They manifest extreme introversion; that is, they live within themselves and take no interest in their surroundings. At times they shun others, withdrawing and spending long periods of time alone, sometimes in a darkened room with the shades drawn, in a morose state of mind. Excessive weeping may also accompany this condition, as well as self-accusation of sins, frequently with thoughts of self-destruction. Such individuals often lack normal emotional response and contact with reality. They live in a private world where little affects them except their own fantasies and dreams. In some oppressed persons, this state of depression alternates with a directly opposite mood of extreme joy, happiness, exhilaration, and optimistic outlook. This mental disorder, known as manic-depressive psychosis, is characterized by extreme, sudden changes in mood, fluctuating up and down, often without warning. Delusions, so-called hallucinations, and psychic oppression are frequently present in victims of occult involvement who have become psychotic. There may be compulsive thoughts of violence and aggression, and destructive emotions of hate, rage, resentment, jealousy, suspicion, envy, malice, and other antisocial abnormalities. Great excitement and perturbation over trivial matters, and other indications of mania are often seen, as well as unpredictable impulses, moods, actions, and other psychopathic indications of insanity. There is often found in such persons a continual "flight of ideas." The individual goes off on one tangent or another, often without completing a thought, and there is a general incoherence of thoughts and ideas. Generally, they are irresponsible, unpredictable, and undependable. Unreasonable attitudes or demands are characteristic of demonic activity in such persons. As a result of occult involvement, some individuals are in subjection to extreme and uncontrollable passions and appetites. Vile language, sexual allusions or displays are common, together with inexplicable character or personality changes toward moral degeneracy. There may be found such sexual aberrations as homosexuality, masochism, self-abuse, promiscuity, sadism, abnormal sexuality, uncontrollable lustful thoughts and images, and suggestive behavior and dress. The presence and activity of demonic powers is also indicated by enslavement to evil habits such as drug addiction, gluttony (compulsive eating), addiction to alcohol or tobacco, compulsive gambling, and many other forms of excess and intemperance. 2.   • DEMONISM IN THE LIGHT OF SCRIPTURE. Part 2 of 2.
    Continued. Others propose the psychosomatic theory. So-called cases of demon "possession" were in actuality physical or mental disorders. With our present knowledge of medicine and psychiatry, many alleged instances of demon activity can now be explained as forms of psychosis or psychoneurosis, habits, addictions, psychological states of the mind, or other physical or mental disorders.
    Contrary to such rationalistic explanations, the Scriptures, without reservation, look upon evil spirits, not as mere hallucinations, influences, habits, functional disorders, states of the mind, or psychological problems, but as intelligent personalities. Frequently, behind what may appear to the skeptic to have some logical or natural explanation, Jesus discerned an evil, supernatural entity causing the problem which plagued its human victim. Thus, He "rebuked" the fever in Peter's mother-in-law (Luke 4:39), loosed a woman who had been bowed together by Satan for eighteen years by casting out a "spirit of infirmity" (Luke 13:11-16), and set the "insane" Gadarene free from a legion of demonic spirits (Mark 5).
    Possession by numerous malevolent spirits is not uncommon even in this day, as those who have dealt with such oppressed victims can attest. Their numbers may range from a dozen or more to hundreds, and in one instance Satan actually admitted to a pastor through the lips of the victim he possessed that there were 1,067 demons in this individual.
    At other times, the Scriptures indicate the reality of demonic spirits by clearly distinguishing between mere functional disorders and those conditions which result from demonic oppression. We are told in Mark 1:32-34 that the people brought unto Jesus" ... all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with demons ... and he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many demons. "In Matthew 8:16 disease and demon possession are also distinguished, as they are in Mark 16:17-18, and in Matthew 10:1, where Jesus gave the twelve disciples "power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease."
    The Scriptures show many instances where physical and mental oppression are caused by the presence and activity of evil spirits. In the case of the lunatic child. We read that "Jesus rebuked the demon; and he departed out of him: and the child was healed from that very hour" (Matthew 17:14-18). In Acts 10:38 we are told that Jesus healed all who were oppressed of the devil. Again in Matthew 12:22 the frequent relationship between demon possession and physical affliction is clearly seen: "Then was brought unto him one possessed with a demon, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw."
    Demon oppression or possession is never treated merely as an organic disease or functional disorder by Jesus. If the cause was an evil spirit, He cured the oppressed individual by casting out the demon.
    Further evidence that Jesus was often dealing, not with mere organic disorders or superstition in the minds of the people, but with distinct intelligences, is seen in:
    The Lord's direct commands to the evil spirits (Mark 5:8); Their recognition of Him ("And unclean spirits, when they saw him ... cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God," Mark 3:11); Their display of certain attributes of personality, such as: Feeling (Mark 5:7), Fear (Luke 8:31), Intelligent speech (Mark 5:7-12), Knowledge (Acts 16:16), and Their personal names ("My name is Legion," Mark 5:9).
    Demons today often identify themselves by name or character as spirits of fear, pride, doubt, lust, resentment, and so on. In one ministry, they have personally heard demons identify themselves either by name or by character. In one instance, a demon identified himself, saying, "I am antichrist" (i.e., the spirit of antichrist); another confessed, "I am the demon of death."
    The various kinds of evil spirits and the nature of their work and activity in human life and affairs will be covered in detail in our further studies.
    There is an almost infinite variety of demonic spirits. There are, for example, spirits of lust, infirmity, insanity, suicide, fear, hate, and pride, as well as deaf, dumb, and blind spirits, who vary in personality, power, appetites, and intelligence. As disembodied spirits, their purpose is to oppress or possess their victims, with the ultimate intention of either the mental, spiritual, or physical destruction of the individual.
    C. How Demons Gain Access.
    How do demonic spirits gain access to their victims to vex, oppress, or possess their minds or bodies? As Matthew 12:43-45 and Mark 5:6-13 clearly indicate, demons as disembodied spirits have no "rest" unless they can find habitation in a physical body, preferably human, through which they can satisfy their own appetites, lusts, and desires. Counseling with oppressed and afflicted individuals has confirmed that there are basically four avenues which can be opened whereby demons gain access to the mind or body: (1) emotional crises, (2) sin, (3) doubt, skepticism, and ridicule of divine things, and (4) occult involvement.
    1. Emotional crises.
    It is generally assumed that cases of oppression by evil spirits can be traced to some form of sin or weakness of character on the part of the afflicted individual. But this is not always true. Unusual emotional experiences such as extreme fright, or prolonged, abnormal grief over personal loss can open doors to demonic oppression. Traumatic or shocking experiences can weaken an individual's resistance. The child who witnesses the murder of his parents, or the young lady who finds out she will lose both her legs because of an automobile accident, are typical of those who would be extremely vulnerable to oppression or invasion by such spirits. In one instance, counseling revealed that the emotional and spiritual problems of a person needing deliverance began with a terrible fright at a very early age. Another was set free from a spirit of mental illness, for which he had been institutionalized, after the cause was traced to a severe emotional crisis which he had experienced.
    Most people do not realize the effect that their attitudes of mind, their fears and doubts, and their negative confessions can have upon them in times of emotional crisis. The wrong confession, especially when one's body is weakened by accident or illness, or when one is in a state of shock, can open the door to invasion by oppressing spirits. Spirits of infirmity may enter under such conditions, when resistance is low, resulting in deformities, chronic conditions, or even death.
    In the case of one individual, serious depression and mental illness resulted from harboring guilt feelings since childhood over the accidental death of a younger member of the family for which she blamed herself. She was later liberated from these oppressing spirits.
    In another instance, an individual became oppressed when a deceiving spirit convinced her that she had grievously sinned by submitting to surgery instead of trusting God to heal her. Convinced by Satan that God would not forgive her, she suffered chronic depression and psychic oppression, and was bound with a spirit of fear to the point of mental collapse, before she was liberated.
    Such disturbances and afflictions cannot be dismissed merely as psychosomatic disorders, or results of mental suggestion, but accord well with the teachings of Scripture. We are told, "as [a man] thinketh in his heart so is he" (Proverbs 23:7), that "death and life are in the power of the tongue" (Proverbs 18:21), and that we can be "snared" by the words of our mouth (Proverbs 6:2). But the same verses also reveal that a positive confession of the Word of God can bring salvation, healing, blessing and deliverance (Mark 11:23-24; Romans 10:10; Psalm 91; Revelation 12:11, etc.).
    2. Sin.
    Such sins as lust, alcohol and drug addiction, theft, sexual excesses, and other sinful habits or forms of intemperance and immorality are frequently the cause of invasion by unclean spirits (cf. John 5:14; Mark 5:8) One psychically afflicted individual acknowledged during counseling with a certain pastor that he actually saw a demon of lust take possession of him as he entered the apartment of his mistress. In another instance, drug addiction resulted in possession by evil spirits from which deliverance was needed. Preoccupation with unclean sexual thoughts and self-abuse led one young man into total possession by a spirit of insanity and a spirit of suicide.
    Moreover, sins such as prolonged attitudes of hate toward another, resentment, extreme envy, jealousy, intolerance, pride, uncontrolled anger, lying, desire for revenge, and so on, subject individuals to the influence of or invasion by the powers of darkness. As a result, they will show less and less control over these attitudes and feelings, while emotional outbursts, compulsive lying, thoughts of violence and aggression, mental breakdown, depression, unpredictable impulses or behavior, psychic oppression, and other forms of antisocial or psychotic behavior will increase. A certain pastor has dealt with more than one situation in which resentments, smoldering beneath the surface for years, have had serious consequences.
    In two instances, women were invaded by spirits which caused physical and mental breakdown because they opposed and resented the careers chosen by their husbands. In other cases, hate and resentment led to severe oppression from Satan. Compulsive lying, which indicates the influence of lying spirits in an individual, has been the consequence in some cases where willful lying was not brought under control. In one instance, a child who had become a chronic liar said that "voices'' told her to call her school with a "bomb scare." The assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King were obvious examples where demonic spirits of hate and intolerance influenced and controlled the perpetrators of these crimes.
    3. Doubt, skepticism, and ridicule of divine things.
    Those who persist in negative or skeptical attitudes of mind concerning divine truth, or who resist the present day ministry of the Holy Spirit, stand in grave danger of becoming bound by spirits of doubt, deception, and unbelief. King Saul became possessed by an evil spirit as a result of his persistent rebellion against God's revealed will, and his persecution of David, God's anointed servant. The apostle Paul states plainly that Satan, "the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not" (II Corinthians 4:4), and that in the last days, upon those who do not receive the truth, "God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness" (II Thessalonians 2:11-12; cf. Matthew 13:10-15; I Timothy 4:1-3).
    Some adverse effects of demonic influence which result from skepticism and/or ridicule of divine truth are progressive spiritual deterioration, increased resistance to the supernatural and miraculous, religious delusions and doctrinal errors, inner turmoil and anxieties concerning religious matters, and the inability to concentrate on the Bible and prayer. In some instances, blasphemous thoughts against Christ, opposition to the Holy Spirit, belligerency against ministers of the gospel, and open scorn and ridicule of Christianity in general are the consequences. A certain pastor saw cases where demons which had just been exercised from the victim immediately entered into skeptics who had come to ridicule and criticize.
    4. Occult involvement.
    The larger part of this book will be devoted to occult participation or involvement, its adverse consequences, and the means of liberation from occult oppression and bondage. Perhaps more than any other, this is the avenue through which the powers of darkness gain access to oppress and afflict their victims. The majority of persons a certain pastor counseled have either been involved in some form of occult activity or know of its presence in their family history. The present-day neurosis epidemic; the increase in psychic afflictions and other mental and physical disorders; and the flood of crime, wickedness, and chaos world-wide, indicate just how successfully the demonic powers have gained control over men and women everywhere through occult involvement.
    The Work and Activity of Demonic Spirits.
    Earlier, we indicated the broad scope of the kingdom of darkness and its vast hierarchy of wicked spirits, consisting of thrones, dominions, principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world and spirit-forces in the heavenlies. Scripture designates Satan as head of the present world-system, ruling in world affairs. The satanic confederacy influences men and nations everywhere, affecting secular and religious institutions alike. Our purpose now is to show Scriptural evidence of how these demonic spirits influence and oppress the lives of individuals in three areas: the physical, the mental, and the spiritual.
    1. Physical infirmities.
    The Gospels contain many references to evil spirits whose primary objective was to afflict their victims with some physical infirmity. These same peculiarities are still in evidence everywhere today.
    (1) Dumb spirits.
    A spirit can take possession of, or afflict, some organ of the body, or bind the nervous center controlling some function. Thus, an evil spirit causing dumbness (the inability to speak) paralyzes the speech faculties. In Matthew 9:32-33, we are told that the dumb man was possessed by a demon, and when the demon was cast out by Jesus the dumb man began to speak.
    (2) Deaf spirits.
    When the malevolent spirit binds or afflicts the auditory nerves, the result is deafness. When both speech and hearing are affected, the afflicted individual is termed a deaf-mute. Medically, a deaf-mute's inability to speak is due to congenital (early) deafness. But Jesus treated such a condition as being caused by an evil spirit, which He cast out (Mark 9:25).
    (3) Blind spirits.
    When the optic nerve is paralyzed by a spirit, the condition will not respond to surgery (Matthew 12:22). Satan also afflicts people with diseases of the eyes or ears which do not result in blindness or deafness.
    (4) Infirm spirits.
    This classification includes an infinite variety of oppressing spirits ranging from those which act upon the spinal cord, the muscles, or the brain, causing such afflictions as deformity, atrophy of the muscles, lameness, and so on (Luke 13:11-17), to spirits causing asthma, cancer, tumors, heart disease, paralysis, migraine headaches, insomnia, tuberculosis, and such like. Epilepsy, a disease affecting the central nervous system, results in severe physical convulsions and loss of consciousness, and may be either an organic affliction or an epileptic spirit. If it is a spirit, then exorcism is the only way to set the oppressed individual free.
    2. Mental oppression.
    There are spirits whose primary function is to assault the mind with evil or unclean thoughts, feelings of depression, apathy, fear, and anxiety, or with temptations ranging from pride to a resignation to failure. Spirits of insanity may take possession of the mental faculties, disrupting normal, rational thought processes. The affected individual exhibits various mental, emotional, and behavioral abnormalities. Suicide spirits also invade the mind, attempting to drive the oppressed individuals to self-destruction or self-injury (Mark 9:17-22), while others relentlessly press their victims into some form of shameful or antisocial behavior (Mark 5:2-5).
    Other spirits plague their victims with fears, depression, anxiety, feelings of apprehension, panic, or hysteria. Often these individuals are hypersensitive and irritable, or exhibit destructive emotions of hate, rage, rebellion against authority, resentment, unpredictable moods and impulses, or other psychopathic abnormalities. We will discuss these in greater detail under the heading "Mental and Emotional Disturbances and Abnormalities," in our further studies.
    3. Spiritual oppression and delusion.
    Without a doubt, the forces of darkness are the most aggressive, cunning, and deceptive in the realm of the spirit. Satan's Basic strategy is to gain control of the lives of men in order to fulfill his evil purposes through them in his warfare against the kingdom of God. Satan reserves his most intelligent, cunning, and powerful spirits for work in this dimension. One such evil spirit, a "prince" in the satanic hierarchy, was powerful enough to withstand for three weeks a heavenly messenger sent to Daniel, until Michael, the archangel, was dispatched to help him (Daniel 10). These spirits are of a higher rank, being the "world-rulers of the darkness of this age" (Ephesians 6:12). They possess and control humans, either in the realm of world affairs or by speaking through Spiritist mediums, by functioning as spirits of divination in fortune tellers and clairvoyants, or by influencing false prophets and deluded religious teachers and leaders.
    We cannot overemphasize the importance of insight into Satan's strategy and methods of operation in the area of the spirit. But we are not without help, "For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds" (II Corinthians 10:4). Every believer is admonished to: Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. -Ephesians 6:11.
    The activities of these spirits are often cloaked with respectability. Religious seducing spirits may appear in clerical or religious garb. As an "angel of light" or as "ministers of righteousness" (II Corinthians 11:14-15) they take up residence in churches, seminaries, and other religious organizations and institutions. They lure the gullible into modernistic churches or schools, or into false cults, where they deceive them into embracing religious errors including heresies, legalism, false revelations, and many other forms of religious delusion and practice, as well as denial of the inerrancy of Scripture.
    Seducing spirits are taking advantage of the revival of witchcraft and the worldwide interest in occult and psychic phenomena. They are using every opportunity to deceive and ensnare the unwary in all forms of occultism, often clothing it with a respectable aura of religiosity. This is seen in Spiritualism, and in the increasing use of ESP, spirit healing, and the seance in religious services. Lying spirits are active in this sphere, seducing and deceiving their victims, as well as inducing them to lie or deceive others (I Kings 22:19-23; Acts 5:1-11). I John 4:1 warns us not to believe every spirit in the sphere of religion, but to test them. The Bible predicts the increased activity of lying and deceiving spirits at the close of the present age, and they are already going forth to seduce and deceive (II Thessalonians 2:10-12; I Timothy 4:1-3; Matthew 24:11,24).
    These spirits often appear in intellectual and cultural garb. In the educational, social, cultural, and political realms of world affairs, spirits of intellectualism, pride, aggrandizement, and avarice or greed have far greater influence than most people are aware. Many outstanding personalities have been influenced or directed by these spirits, or have participated in some form of occultism, subjecting themselves to possible influence of seducing spirits. Many of the world's leading poets, novelists, philosophers, musicians, scientists, politicians, and religious leaders are or have been interested or involved in some form of occultism or other psychic phenomena, often admitting it without apology.
    The noted philosopher, Socrates, openly acknowledged that he was guided and inspired by his "Daemon" (demon). Dr. Carl Jung, world renowned psychiatrist, was possessed with psychic powers, and had many psychic experiences. Dr. Nandor Fodor, a well-known psychoanalyst, reported that Jung conversed with a spirit-guide named Philemon, often had horoscopes cast for his patients, and wrote his doctoral thesis on the subject of occult phenomena. Thomas Edison's parents were Spiritualists who conducted seances in their home. Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, is said to have worked as a professional medium in New York. Joseph Smith, founder of Mormonism, received his "revelations” from a discarnate spirit named Moroni. Emanuel Swedenborg, the scientist-theologian whose followers founded the Churches of the New Jerusalem based on his teachings, reportedly communicated with the "dead" on frequent occasions.
    It is common knowledge that seances were held in the White House during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln. Spirits speaking through mediums are said to have influenced Lincoln's decision concerning the Emancipation Proclamation. Lincoln's apparition has reportedly been seen in the White House by others (a common phenomenon in houses where seances have been held), most notably by Queen Wilhelmina of Holland, during the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Psychic Jeane Dixon claims to have been invited to the White House more than once for consultation by the late President Roosevelt, whose death she predicted. Woodrow Wilson is said to have consulted mediums for guidance during the First World War. Mackenzie King, a former Prime Minister of Canada was said to have been active in Spiritualism and to have sought spirit guidance in affairs of state, according to Fred Archer, writer on spiritualism and psychic research.
    Archer also reported that Sir Winston Churchill acknowledged he used the planchette at times, and had done automatic or spirit writing. The psychic interests of Britain's Queen Victoria, as well as that of W.E. Gladstone, nineteenth century Prime Minister of England, included attendance at seances and seeking communication with the dead. In fact, Archer cited records showing that the British royal family has had contact with spiritualism for over a century, and that King George of Greece was an active Spiritualist.
    Arthur Ford, a Disciples of Christ minister and psychic medium, stated in his book, Nothing So Strange, that he conducted seances for many notable personalities, including many important persons in government: generals, admirals, ambassadors, congressmen, senators, and members of the State Department. Through his Spiritual Frontiers Fellowship, many church leaders have become involved in psychic matters, and occultism has thereby made inroads into churches of various denominations, as well as other religious organizations.
    Like Jeane Dixon, Ford's psychic powers brought him invitations for consultations and demonstrations far and wide. He conducted seances in Hyde Park Methodist Church of Chicago, and many others. He held seances for Upton Sinclair, the American novelist; Dr. Sherwood Eddy, founder of the YMCA in the Orient; Ruth Montgomery, author of A Gift of Prophecy (about Jeane Dixon); Glenn Clark, founder of CFO; and Dr. Ozora Davis, former president of Chicago Theological Seminary. He demonstrated his psychic abilities before a committee appointed several years ago by the Archbishop of Canterbury to inquire into the claims of spiritualism.
    The phenomenal revival of interest in astrology has been featured in Time magazine. In the United States alone there are thousands of astrologers, full or part time, who chart the heavens for millions of interested followers. A Time magazine listing of Americans interested in this form of divination included J.P. Morgan, Mary Pickford, Robert Cummings, Marlene Dietrich, Peter Lawford, and Ronald Reagan.
    Astrologers were engaged by several governments during World War II to produce astrological calculations for propaganda purposes; in addition they made predictions as to the enemy's tactics and the outcome of the war. Horoscopes were cast for all the Allied and Axis leaders and exhaustively analyzed. In Nazi Germany, Himmler employed a corps of clairvoyants and astrologers, while the astrologer Louis de Wohl claims to have functioned in this capacity for the British government. And the Russians evidently had an astrologer who served under Stalin and Krushchev.
    In the literary field, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes detective mysteries, was active in spiritualism and also its avid defender. Charles Dickens, who had psychic experiences, once confided that every word uttered by the characters in his novels was distinctly heard by him as spirit voices before being written down. Writers on the occult report that Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the American poet, was interested in psychic phenomena and attended seances, and that Lord Tennyson and John Ruskin shared interest in the psychic field. Harriet Beecher Stowe, said to be psychic from childhood, stated that she did not really originate Uncle Tom's Cabin but that it came to her in vision. Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain), American author and humorist, was a member of the (occult) Society for Psychical Research, and reported his own psychic experiences.
    Horror fiction, with its monsters, vampires, werewolves, ghosts, murders, and gruesome and revolting subject matter, is plainly of occult origin. Novels such as Frankenstein, Dracula, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and the horror fiction of Edgar Allan Poe, Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Goethe, and Charles Dickens all point to occult sources. Of course, the works of Shakespeare are replete with witches, ghosts, magic, blood and murder.
    Current interest in the occult is reflected in the immense increase in the sale of occult literature, the abundance of horror movies, plays and television programs which reflect occult influence, and the popularity of monster and horror comics for children. The bizarre, strange, macabre, and demonic seem to have captivated the minds of young and old alike. Is it possible that this increase in fascination with the occult, and the increase in physical, emotional, and psychic disturbances today, are merely coincidental? I hope you join us next time for our further studies on these topics. Edited. Shared.
    ❤️DEMONISM IN THE LIGHT OF SCRIPTURE. Part 2 of 2. Continued. Others propose the psychosomatic theory. So-called cases of demon "possession" were in actuality physical or mental disorders. With our present knowledge of medicine and psychiatry, many alleged instances of demon activity can now be explained as forms of psychosis or psychoneurosis, habits, addictions, psychological states of the mind, or other physical or mental disorders. Contrary to such rationalistic explanations, the Scriptures, without reservation, look upon evil spirits, not as mere hallucinations, influences, habits, functional disorders, states of the mind, or psychological problems, but as intelligent personalities. Frequently, behind what may appear to the skeptic to have some logical or natural explanation, Jesus discerned an evil, supernatural entity causing the problem which plagued its human victim. Thus, He "rebuked" the fever in Peter's mother-in-law (Luke 4:39), loosed a woman who had been bowed together by Satan for eighteen years by casting out a "spirit of infirmity" (Luke 13:11-16), and set the "insane" Gadarene free from a legion of demonic spirits (Mark 5). Possession by numerous malevolent spirits is not uncommon even in this day, as those who have dealt with such oppressed victims can attest. Their numbers may range from a dozen or more to hundreds, and in one instance Satan actually admitted to a pastor through the lips of the victim he possessed that there were 1,067 demons in this individual. At other times, the Scriptures indicate the reality of demonic spirits by clearly distinguishing between mere functional disorders and those conditions which result from demonic oppression. We are told in Mark 1:32-34 that the people brought unto Jesus" ... all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with demons ... and he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many demons. "In Matthew 8:16 disease and demon possession are also distinguished, as they are in Mark 16:17-18, and in Matthew 10:1, where Jesus gave the twelve disciples "power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease." The Scriptures show many instances where physical and mental oppression are caused by the presence and activity of evil spirits. In the case of the lunatic child. We read that "Jesus rebuked the demon; and he departed out of him: and the child was healed from that very hour" (Matthew 17:14-18). In Acts 10:38 we are told that Jesus healed all who were oppressed of the devil. Again in Matthew 12:22 the frequent relationship between demon possession and physical affliction is clearly seen: "Then was brought unto him one possessed with a demon, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw." Demon oppression or possession is never treated merely as an organic disease or functional disorder by Jesus. If the cause was an evil spirit, He cured the oppressed individual by casting out the demon. Further evidence that Jesus was often dealing, not with mere organic disorders or superstition in the minds of the people, but with distinct intelligences, is seen in: The Lord's direct commands to the evil spirits (Mark 5:8); Their recognition of Him ("And unclean spirits, when they saw him ... cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God," Mark 3:11); Their display of certain attributes of personality, such as: Feeling (Mark 5:7), Fear (Luke 8:31), Intelligent speech (Mark 5:7-12), Knowledge (Acts 16:16), and Their personal names ("My name is Legion," Mark 5:9). Demons today often identify themselves by name or character as spirits of fear, pride, doubt, lust, resentment, and so on. In one ministry, they have personally heard demons identify themselves either by name or by character. In one instance, a demon identified himself, saying, "I am antichrist" (i.e., the spirit of antichrist); another confessed, "I am the demon of death." The various kinds of evil spirits and the nature of their work and activity in human life and affairs will be covered in detail in our further studies. There is an almost infinite variety of demonic spirits. There are, for example, spirits of lust, infirmity, insanity, suicide, fear, hate, and pride, as well as deaf, dumb, and blind spirits, who vary in personality, power, appetites, and intelligence. As disembodied spirits, their purpose is to oppress or possess their victims, with the ultimate intention of either the mental, spiritual, or physical destruction of the individual. C. How Demons Gain Access. How do demonic spirits gain access to their victims to vex, oppress, or possess their minds or bodies? As Matthew 12:43-45 and Mark 5:6-13 clearly indicate, demons as disembodied spirits have no "rest" unless they can find habitation in a physical body, preferably human, through which they can satisfy their own appetites, lusts, and desires. Counseling with oppressed and afflicted individuals has confirmed that there are basically four avenues which can be opened whereby demons gain access to the mind or body: (1) emotional crises, (2) sin, (3) doubt, skepticism, and ridicule of divine things, and (4) occult involvement. 1. Emotional crises. It is generally assumed that cases of oppression by evil spirits can be traced to some form of sin or weakness of character on the part of the afflicted individual. But this is not always true. Unusual emotional experiences such as extreme fright, or prolonged, abnormal grief over personal loss can open doors to demonic oppression. Traumatic or shocking experiences can weaken an individual's resistance. The child who witnesses the murder of his parents, or the young lady who finds out she will lose both her legs because of an automobile accident, are typical of those who would be extremely vulnerable to oppression or invasion by such spirits. In one instance, counseling revealed that the emotional and spiritual problems of a person needing deliverance began with a terrible fright at a very early age. Another was set free from a spirit of mental illness, for which he had been institutionalized, after the cause was traced to a severe emotional crisis which he had experienced. Most people do not realize the effect that their attitudes of mind, their fears and doubts, and their negative confessions can have upon them in times of emotional crisis. The wrong confession, especially when one's body is weakened by accident or illness, or when one is in a state of shock, can open the door to invasion by oppressing spirits. Spirits of infirmity may enter under such conditions, when resistance is low, resulting in deformities, chronic conditions, or even death. In the case of one individual, serious depression and mental illness resulted from harboring guilt feelings since childhood over the accidental death of a younger member of the family for which she blamed herself. She was later liberated from these oppressing spirits. In another instance, an individual became oppressed when a deceiving spirit convinced her that she had grievously sinned by submitting to surgery instead of trusting God to heal her. Convinced by Satan that God would not forgive her, she suffered chronic depression and psychic oppression, and was bound with a spirit of fear to the point of mental collapse, before she was liberated. Such disturbances and afflictions cannot be dismissed merely as psychosomatic disorders, or results of mental suggestion, but accord well with the teachings of Scripture. We are told, "as [a man] thinketh in his heart so is he" (Proverbs 23:7), that "death and life are in the power of the tongue" (Proverbs 18:21), and that we can be "snared" by the words of our mouth (Proverbs 6:2). But the same verses also reveal that a positive confession of the Word of God can bring salvation, healing, blessing and deliverance (Mark 11:23-24; Romans 10:10; Psalm 91; Revelation 12:11, etc.). 2. Sin. Such sins as lust, alcohol and drug addiction, theft, sexual excesses, and other sinful habits or forms of intemperance and immorality are frequently the cause of invasion by unclean spirits (cf. John 5:14; Mark 5:8) One psychically afflicted individual acknowledged during counseling with a certain pastor that he actually saw a demon of lust take possession of him as he entered the apartment of his mistress. In another instance, drug addiction resulted in possession by evil spirits from which deliverance was needed. Preoccupation with unclean sexual thoughts and self-abuse led one young man into total possession by a spirit of insanity and a spirit of suicide. Moreover, sins such as prolonged attitudes of hate toward another, resentment, extreme envy, jealousy, intolerance, pride, uncontrolled anger, lying, desire for revenge, and so on, subject individuals to the influence of or invasion by the powers of darkness. As a result, they will show less and less control over these attitudes and feelings, while emotional outbursts, compulsive lying, thoughts of violence and aggression, mental breakdown, depression, unpredictable impulses or behavior, psychic oppression, and other forms of antisocial or psychotic behavior will increase. A certain pastor has dealt with more than one situation in which resentments, smoldering beneath the surface for years, have had serious consequences. In two instances, women were invaded by spirits which caused physical and mental breakdown because they opposed and resented the careers chosen by their husbands. In other cases, hate and resentment led to severe oppression from Satan. Compulsive lying, which indicates the influence of lying spirits in an individual, has been the consequence in some cases where willful lying was not brought under control. In one instance, a child who had become a chronic liar said that "voices'' told her to call her school with a "bomb scare." The assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King were obvious examples where demonic spirits of hate and intolerance influenced and controlled the perpetrators of these crimes. 3. Doubt, skepticism, and ridicule of divine things. Those who persist in negative or skeptical attitudes of mind concerning divine truth, or who resist the present day ministry of the Holy Spirit, stand in grave danger of becoming bound by spirits of doubt, deception, and unbelief. King Saul became possessed by an evil spirit as a result of his persistent rebellion against God's revealed will, and his persecution of David, God's anointed servant. The apostle Paul states plainly that Satan, "the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not" (II Corinthians 4:4), and that in the last days, upon those who do not receive the truth, "God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness" (II Thessalonians 2:11-12; cf. Matthew 13:10-15; I Timothy 4:1-3). Some adverse effects of demonic influence which result from skepticism and/or ridicule of divine truth are progressive spiritual deterioration, increased resistance to the supernatural and miraculous, religious delusions and doctrinal errors, inner turmoil and anxieties concerning religious matters, and the inability to concentrate on the Bible and prayer. In some instances, blasphemous thoughts against Christ, opposition to the Holy Spirit, belligerency against ministers of the gospel, and open scorn and ridicule of Christianity in general are the consequences. A certain pastor saw cases where demons which had just been exercised from the victim immediately entered into skeptics who had come to ridicule and criticize. 4. Occult involvement. The larger part of this book will be devoted to occult participation or involvement, its adverse consequences, and the means of liberation from occult oppression and bondage. Perhaps more than any other, this is the avenue through which the powers of darkness gain access to oppress and afflict their victims. The majority of persons a certain pastor counseled have either been involved in some form of occult activity or know of its presence in their family history. The present-day neurosis epidemic; the increase in psychic afflictions and other mental and physical disorders; and the flood of crime, wickedness, and chaos world-wide, indicate just how successfully the demonic powers have gained control over men and women everywhere through occult involvement. The Work and Activity of Demonic Spirits. Earlier, we indicated the broad scope of the kingdom of darkness and its vast hierarchy of wicked spirits, consisting of thrones, dominions, principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world and spirit-forces in the heavenlies. Scripture designates Satan as head of the present world-system, ruling in world affairs. The satanic confederacy influences men and nations everywhere, affecting secular and religious institutions alike. Our purpose now is to show Scriptural evidence of how these demonic spirits influence and oppress the lives of individuals in three areas: the physical, the mental, and the spiritual. 1. Physical infirmities. The Gospels contain many references to evil spirits whose primary objective was to afflict their victims with some physical infirmity. These same peculiarities are still in evidence everywhere today. (1) Dumb spirits. A spirit can take possession of, or afflict, some organ of the body, or bind the nervous center controlling some function. Thus, an evil spirit causing dumbness (the inability to speak) paralyzes the speech faculties. In Matthew 9:32-33, we are told that the dumb man was possessed by a demon, and when the demon was cast out by Jesus the dumb man began to speak. (2) Deaf spirits. When the malevolent spirit binds or afflicts the auditory nerves, the result is deafness. When both speech and hearing are affected, the afflicted individual is termed a deaf-mute. Medically, a deaf-mute's inability to speak is due to congenital (early) deafness. But Jesus treated such a condition as being caused by an evil spirit, which He cast out (Mark 9:25). (3) Blind spirits. When the optic nerve is paralyzed by a spirit, the condition will not respond to surgery (Matthew 12:22). Satan also afflicts people with diseases of the eyes or ears which do not result in blindness or deafness. (4) Infirm spirits. This classification includes an infinite variety of oppressing spirits ranging from those which act upon the spinal cord, the muscles, or the brain, causing such afflictions as deformity, atrophy of the muscles, lameness, and so on (Luke 13:11-17), to spirits causing asthma, cancer, tumors, heart disease, paralysis, migraine headaches, insomnia, tuberculosis, and such like. Epilepsy, a disease affecting the central nervous system, results in severe physical convulsions and loss of consciousness, and may be either an organic affliction or an epileptic spirit. If it is a spirit, then exorcism is the only way to set the oppressed individual free. 2. Mental oppression. There are spirits whose primary function is to assault the mind with evil or unclean thoughts, feelings of depression, apathy, fear, and anxiety, or with temptations ranging from pride to a resignation to failure. Spirits of insanity may take possession of the mental faculties, disrupting normal, rational thought processes. The affected individual exhibits various mental, emotional, and behavioral abnormalities. Suicide spirits also invade the mind, attempting to drive the oppressed individuals to self-destruction or self-injury (Mark 9:17-22), while others relentlessly press their victims into some form of shameful or antisocial behavior (Mark 5:2-5). Other spirits plague their victims with fears, depression, anxiety, feelings of apprehension, panic, or hysteria. Often these individuals are hypersensitive and irritable, or exhibit destructive emotions of hate, rage, rebellion against authority, resentment, unpredictable moods and impulses, or other psychopathic abnormalities. We will discuss these in greater detail under the heading "Mental and Emotional Disturbances and Abnormalities," in our further studies. 3. Spiritual oppression and delusion.     WELCOME TO OUR DAILY DEVOTIONAL BIBLE STUDY SERIES: WHEN SOVEREIGN AUTHORITY SPEAKS, AND GOD SAID!!!
    TODAY TOPIC: PRACTICAL DAILY CHARACTER, MANNERS, CONDUCT, UTTERANCES AND CHOICE OF LIFESTYLE: ARE THE DEFINING CLOTHES AND LANGUAGE OF  A "GOD-LIKE" MANDATE.
    MAIN TEXT: Genesis 1:26 (KJV) "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion..." REF: 1 Peter 1:15-16; Philippians 2:15; Matthew 5:16; Colossians 3:17
    INTRODUCTION TO THE MESSAGE OF TODAY:
    Hear the alarm of the Spirit! We are living in a generation that has mastered the art of religious performance while starving for the power of authentic transformation. The "God-like" mandate is not a public show; it is an inward reality that reflects the very true essence of your Soul person.
    To be "God-like" is to mirror the True personality of Christ Jesus in our daily character, conduct and lifestyle, not reflecting the fluctuating mere religious moral and spiritual sensational standards of this modern era, but capturing and duplicating the very Essence of the Father.
    The world is not searching for another clever sermon preacher or mere religious lifestyle; it is searching for the Living Epistle. Your daily conduct is the "colour of your clothing" in the spirit realm. If you claim the Father’s DNA, your inward thoughts must burn with His purity, and your outward manners must carry the royal weight of His Kingdom.
    As a child of God that you daily claims to be, you are expected to reflect in your conduct, manners, utterances, hidden motives, in your character and choice of daily lifestyle a child well-taught by the words of his Father, holding the reputation of His Great Mighty name in higher regard than your own comfort or public acclaim!
    MAIN MESSAGE.
    To be "God-like" starts in the hidden laboratory of the heart, in the silence of your thoughts, the secret spring of your desires, and the raw motives that drive your silent decisions and practical daily lifestyle.
    A true Forged Son of the Living Most High God, knows that God does not judge by the facade of appearances and hypothetical self-righteous outputs; He judges by the contents of the hearts that drives our output behaviour and character.
    This inward reality inevitably manifests in our outward conduct, in our utterances, our attitudes, and our lifestyle. Your speech is expected to be salted with grace, your manners must breathe the dignity of the Kingdom, and your behaviour must be a beacon of integrity.
    When you handle your family challenges, your finances, your business dealing, your office responsibilities and your frustrations in ways that reflects the integrity and glory of God, you are speaking a language that God recognises and cannot ignore. Practical Godliness is when your character mirrors the Father's personality. You are not just a child of God; you are His functional extension on earth.
    Consider the mystery of the stars. They are always connected to the Sun, even when the natural eye can neither see them, nor recognise, nor appreciates their presence in the brightness of the Skyline. During the brightness of the Sunlight, they draw into themselves the raw, invisible power of the Sunlight, preparing themselves for the approaching inevitable darkness of the night period.
    When the world goes dark, they do not hide themselves; they burn out the power of the sunlight stored up in themselves, reflecting the glory of the Sunlight in them to guide the wandering and lead the seeker to their appropriate destination, like in the case of the three wisemen to Christ.
    The degree of the brilliance of each Star in the period of the dark night is contingent upon their individual quantities of the power of the sunlight drawn into themselves during the Sunlight period of shining.
    Your capacity to triumph and honour God in challenging times is contigent upon the quantity and quality of His words in you and the degree of your inner yieldedness to His Lordship presence in you. It also reveals the degree of respect and honour and the position your Soul person placed Jesus Christ in your mind and life.
    Our daily conduct in our challenging situations, our humility in the face of provocation, our steadfastness in the face of temptation, our love in the face of hatred, our manners in times of our abundance or lack or failures or success etc in the privacy of our family homes, in our public office or wherever etc are our dark hour periods expected of us to manifest the quality contents of Christ Jesus Lordship presence in us as a "star-light."
    It is the period of our life expected of us to manifest the glory of the Sunlight evidence of Jesus Christ presence in us, reflecting through our manners, our conduct, our utterances, our attitudes, our behaviour, and character etc to give godly moral and spiritual direction to a lost humanity. You are a star designed to guide the world back to the feet of the Master in character and choice of daily lifestyle especially in trying times and in your abundance success. Hold that reputation high!
    REFERENCES STUDY TOPICS TO MAIN MESSAGES:
    THE INWARD BLUEPRINT: (Cross Reference: Proverbs 4:23) "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." Your character is the output of your heart; guard the fountain, and the stream will be holy.
    THE LANGUAGE OF CONDUCT: (Cross Reference: Colossians 4:6) "Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt..." Your daily utterances are the primary evidence of your Divine heritage.
    THE STAR-LIGHT MANDATE: (Cross Reference: Matthew 5:16) "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Your works are the star-light that leads men to the Sun “Jesus Christ".
    REFLECTION QUESTIONS.
    If your private thoughts and hidden motives were broadcast for the world to see, would they clearly identify you as a child of the King of kings?
    In your home, do your manners and attitudes reflect a child well-taught by his Father, or are they dictated by your fleshly moods?
    Are you spending enough "time in the Sunlight" (secret prayer and meditationnin the word) to ensure you have enough stored power of God's presence in you to burn brightly when the darkness of life inevitable challenges surrounds you?
    LIFE APPLICATION.
    Today, practice the "Ambassador’s Check." Whenever you are about to speak or react to a situation at the privacy of your home or public, pause and ask: "Is this the voice of my Father's House?" In your interactions with your family, consciously choose to act with the dignity and maturity of a Royal Son. Let your behaviour be the clearest sermon you preach today. In your quiet moments, actively "soak" in the presence of the Lord, letting His character override your impulses, so that when the darkness comes, you are already filled with His guiding light.
    FURTHER STUDY REFERENCES:  Ephesians 5:1-2; 1 Timothy 4:12; Philippians 1:27; Titus 2:7-8.
    CONCLUSION.
    Beloved, you are a walking representative of the Almighty God on earth. Your daily lifestyle is the "colour" by which the world will judge the reputation of your Father. Never underestimate the impact of a holy life, a kind word, or a disciplined attitude. These are the tools that dismantle the darkness of this age.
    As you continue this 120-day journey with us in this devotional study series, strive for complete alignment. Let your inward desires and your outward manners become a seamless garment of light. By July 2026, when the full manuscript is fully released, you will not just be a reader of these truths, you will be a living, breathing testimony of the Father’s character. Stand tall, act worthy, and shine with the brilliance of a star that has spent its time well with the Sunlight of His Living Words!
    PRAYER POINTS:
    O Sovereign Father, purge my heart; let my thoughts, desires, and motives be refined in the fire of your holiness until I think as you think and live as you desired of me in Jesus name.
    I decree that my daily conduct, my manners, and my utterances are a mirror of your character; I choose to hold the reputation of your Great name in the highest regard in Jesus name.
    Lord, saturate me with your Sunlight presence; let my life be so full of your words and  power that will make me to burn brightly in character during the darkened period of life trials, guiding others unerringly to the feet of Jesus Christ!
    PASTORAL CLOSING PRAYER FOR READERS
    O Almighty God, the Father of Lights, who has called us to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world! I lift every reader mof this devotion before you today. Grant such the grace to model this divine life in every aspect of their character.
    Lord, I pray for every reader, let an intense hunger for practical holiness ignite in their souls. Let their families feel the change in their manners; let their workplaces feel the shift in their conduct. May their daily lives become the language that you respond to with immediate, miraculous intervention. In the holy, set-apart Name of Jesus Christ I pray. Amen!
    BENEDICTION.
    Now may the God of peace sanctify you wholly; and may your whole Spirit, Soul, and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. May your manners be your ministry, your character be your crown, and your conduct be the light that leads this generation to the Cross. Go forth and shine! In Jesus Christ Mighty name. Amen and Amen!
  • THE PILGRIMS GUIDE
    SUNDAY JUNE 28, 2026
    DIVINE VISITATION
    A WORD FROM THE WORD:
    "And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness. Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all." Acts 4:31-33 NKJV
    This was a time when God visited His people as recorded in the Scripture, and His visitation to them was when they were with Him in true worship and living. It was a time their enemy decided to discourage them through threats and sundry afflictions, and so with divine visitation, they were never the same. Did you notice that the disciples did not begin to blame God or men for their problems but rather, they rejoiced that they have been counted worthy to suffer what the LORD Jesus Did?
    When God visits you, He will raise you from abandonment into His caring bosom. Before this visitation will occur, the following must take place.
    1). Seeking The LORD With A Pure Heart:
    The LORD desires that you must seek Him with a pure heart (Jeremiah 20:9).
    Your life must be changed from bad to good and you must deliberately position yourself in the arena of His presence by doing the needful (2 Chronicles 7:14).
    2). Praise Him:
    You must be a person of praise, (a non-complainant), ever-praiseful (Habakkuk 3:17-19).
    Praising God brings down His glory and presence in the lives of His people (Acts 16:25-26).
    3). Earnest Prayer:
    You must seek the LORD with all your heart in prayer (James 5:16b-18).
    Until we pray, heaven will not answer (2 Chronicles 7:14).
    The prayer must be fervent, painstakingly powerful, such that it is more powerful than the SCUD missiles in a carnal warfare, and God doesn't resist it, neither can the devil hinder it. When we talk about earnest prayer, it's not the congregational prayer, but the prayer of the closet, personal secret place.
    This is where the Bible says that whoever dwells there "shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty" (Psalm 91:1). This was the kind of prayer that Paul and Silas made in the prison before an earthquake occurred and something happened (Acts 16:25-26).
    PRAYER BULLETS:
    ABBA Father, that I might position myself in the arena of Your Presence. I desire to pray according to Your will for me, help me.
    Loving Jesus, I don't want to be subject to the tyranny of my moods with regards to prayer.
    FURTHER READING:
    Acts 16:25-26; 2 Chronicles 7:14-15; Jeremiah 20:9.
    The Christian's Tranquilizer
    This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence whenever our hearts condemn us...
    1 John 3:19-20
    On the phrase whenever our hearts condemn us, the apostle John is recognizing that the problem we face is that of a condemning heart. He suggests here in this phrase that this is a rather frequent and often involuntary experience on our part. Who of us as a Christian has not had trouble with a bad conscience or a condemning heart? There are physical problems that affect us spiritually, but all too often this is the result of an attack of the evil one upon our faith, an attempt to try to dislodge us from faith in Jesus Christ, to annul our effectiveness as Christians. And all too often this attack succeeds.
    Perhaps there is nothing more common than this problem—Christians who are suffering from a bad conscience, a condemning heart. Sometimes these attacks come upon us in the midst of our most spiritual moods, catching us when we least expect.
    What is the remedy? Look at what John says. We must know that we belong to the truth. That is the essential thing. We must reestablish the great fact of our relationship to Christ. We must have ground for believing and reassuring ourselves that we are indeed justified by faith, standing in God's presence not by our own righteousness but by the righteousness of the Son of God, that we are accepted in the Beloved, that we are in Christ, because, as Paul tells us in Romans 8, Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). If we are going to silence the doubts of our hearts, we must know that we belong to the truth.
    How do you do that? Notice his argument here. This then is how we know that we belong to the truth. We must know that we belong to the truth in order to reassure our condemning hearts, and how do we do it? By this! By what? What he has just mentioned in verse 18. Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue [only] but with actions and in truth (1 John 3:18). By this we will reassure our hearts by the knowledge that we are of the truth. He is referring here to an act of love; that is, we deliberately and with specific intent do a kind and helpful deed or speak a loving word to the one who has injured us or caused us to be plunged into this morass of condemnation. Return good for evil, in other words.
    You do not have to wait until you are forced to be nice to somebody. Do it deliberately. Set yourself to the task of finding others in need and helping them out. Let us not love in word and tongue but with actions and in truth. It has been a joy to see how many times these words have proved true. People have discovered that much of the loneliness and emptiness of their lives was simply a result of shutting themselves away from the needs of others. As soon as they began to minister to another's life, they discovered that there was an accompanying wonderful sense of reassurance and an awakening of the spirit of joy in their own hearts.
    Grant to us, Lord, to find the lonely and the distressed and to encourage them and share something of ourselves with them, that we might thus express this kind of love. By this shall we know that we are of the truth.
    Alone in the crowd.
    Joe Crews.
    Recently I discovered some very
    interesting things about a little
    sea creature that rates rather low
    on the biblical scale. The unclean shrimp
    has a most marvelous manner of changing
    clothes six or eight times a year through
    a process called molting. Apparently a  Alone in the Crowd
    new suit begins to grow underneath the
    old skin. By scraping around on the rocks,
    the shrimp begins to shred and loosen the
    older outer layer, which soon sloughs off
    completely, revealing the classy new cov-
    ering underneath.
    At the time of each molting, another
    fascinating phenomenon occurs. In re-
    sponse to some built-in primitive instinct
    every shrimp deliberately places a grain of
    sand in a special place in its head. At every
    molting cycle the little rock is discarded
    along with the old skin, and a new grain of
    sand is put carefully in place.
    Because of the unique function of
    those rocks, they have been named “status
    stones” or stones of standing. They are ab-
    solutely necessary for the survival of these
    hardy marine animals. Without them the
    shrimp would be constantly confused and
    disoriented. In the wake of surging tides
    and currents they are tumbled over and
    over and upside down. It is only by feeling Alone in the Crowd
    the slight tug of gravity on the rock in their
    head that they can recognize whether they
    are upside down or right side up.
    In His great love and wisdom, God
    provided this mechanism to enable the
    lowly shrimp to keep a dignified balance
    amid the turbulent elements of its habitat.
    Since it is obvious that no shrimp con-
    fided these facts to me, you might wonder
    how this amazing information came to
    light. Several years ago a marine biolo-
    gist conducted an experiment on several
    shrimp that had been placed in a large
    aquarium. In the bottom of the aquarium
    the scientist placed steel filings instead of
    sand. When molting time came, each one
    of the shrimp picked up a piece of steel, in-
    stead of a rock, and placed it in its head.
    Then the biologist brought a power-
    ful electromagnet and placed it over the
    top of the aquarium. Immediately all the
    shrimp flipped upside down and began
    to swim around in an inverted position.  Alone in the Crowd
    The pull of the magnet on the steel sliv-
    er was stronger than the tug of gravity,
    and they believed that up was down and
    down was up. To make the experiment
    more dramatic the scientist then brought a
    shrimp from the ocean and placed it in the
    aquarium. Naturally this newcomer on the
    scene was paddling around in the proper
    upright position.
    Can’t you imagine the consternation
    that probably was provoked by the appear-
    ance of this oddball in the tank? It seems
    highly likely that some nasty whispers
    began to circulate within those troubled
    waters. “Who does this nut think he is?
    Who is he trying to impress? Does this
    weirdo imagine that he is going to show us
    a better way to swim? Why is he doing it
    upside down?”
    You see, that steel-in-the-head, wrong-
    way crowd had no inkling that the recent
    visitor was really the only shrimp that was
    swimming correctly. They had always Alone in the Crowd
    depended on two things to prove they were
    right-side up—their feeling, and what the
    majority around them was doing. But now
    that their status stone had been tampered
    with, they were deceived into believing a
    lie on both counts.
    Following Feeling or
    Following the Crowd
    The more I thought of that story,
    the more I realized that all of us are in an
    aquarium as we make our way through
    this world. Powerful magnets of tempta-
    tion are all around us trying to disturb our
    spiritual balance and turn us upside down.
    Those who trust in feeling and majority
    opinion are easily up-ended by the strong
    attraction of outside forces. Consoled
    by the presence of so many others about
    them doing the same thing, they soon be-
    gin to see everything in relation to their
    distorted view. They reverse all the signs
    in order to read them better, and develop  Alone in the Crowd
    a firm conviction that they are balanced
    and correct, while everyone differing from
    them is wrong. Eventually they see wrong
    as right and right as wrong. Anyone who
    goes contrary to his or her perceptions is
    instantly branded as a fanatic or a critical
    troublemaker.
    This points up one great truth: We can-
    not measure right and wrong by our feeling
    or by what the majority are doing! We need
    something from outside ourselves to tell
    us where the truth lies. Our impulses may
    be just as real as the pull of the magnet, but
    they could also be just as misleading. Our
    numerous friends may be most respect-
    able and religious, but their status stone
    could be linked to the same false guidance
    system, cleverly sabotaged by the enemy.
    There is only one true, infallible status
    stone for the Christian, and that is the Bible.
    When that Word is placed in the mind, it
    provides a standard of truth which is al-
    ways dependable. Every impulse of feeling Alone in the Crowd
    should be tested by it. The total lifestyle,
    including words, actions, and thoughts
    must be brought under the supervision of
    that one great directional control center. It
    is no exaggeration to state that most de-
    viations from God’s will today are based
    upon either following feeling or following
    the crowd.
    How important it is for us to study
    these two powerful weapons that Satan
    utilized with such devilish expertise. Both
    of them are rooted within man’s deepest
    psychological needs. We often overlook
    the fact that our spiritual enemy has been
    studying human nature for almost 6,000
    years—quite a bit longer than the most
    successful psychiatrist in practice today.
    He has also experimented with our emo-
    tional weaknesses, using these to exploit
    us in our most vulnerable moments.
    How many have fallen prey to his ma-
    nipulative devices? One clear look at our
    flesh-oriented society provides the answer.  Alone in the Crowd
    Jesus saw it long before it happened and
    tried to warn his disciples and us about the
    strength of those attacks. He said, “Strait
    is the gate, and narrow is the way, which
    leadeth into life, and few there be that find
    it” (Matthew 7:14).
    On another occasion the Master asked
    this significant question, “When the son
    of man cometh, shall he find faith on the
    earth?” (Luke 18:8). In the same discourse
    He declared, “As it was in the days of Noe,
    so shall it be also in the days of the Son of
    man” (Luke 17:26).
    Obviously only a small proportion of
    earth’s inhabitants will escape from the
    overwhelming deceptions of the last days
    and be saved. A little remnant, as always,
    will be more concerned about doing right
    than pleasing self, the crowd, or some oth-
    er individual. The record of history con-
    sistently chronicles the story of that small
    company of dissenters who dared to reject
    the comfortable appeal of the crowd. The Alone in the Crowd
    majority seem never to be searching for
    truth so much as for a smooth, easy, con-
    venient religion which will allow them to
    live as they please. To them any doctrine
    which demands self-denial or a disciplined
    lifestyle is bad news.
    I
    s It Easy to Preach the Truth?
    This is undoubtedly why there is such
    a one-sided gospel being preached
    in most churches today. It is pleasant to
    speak things that are appreciated and well
    received. No messenger of God is hesitant
    to declare the precious truths about justi-
    fication and free grace which require only
    faith and acceptance. Yet there is another
    side of the gospel which is concerned with
    fruits and good works. It is called sanctifi-
    cation. It speaks of obedience and Christ-
    like behavior in every life situation. That is
    the aspect of righteousness by faith which
    is very unpopular with the masses today. It
    demands action and obedience. 10 Alone in the Crowd
    Are some preachers afraid to deliver
    the unadorned truth on this subject for fear
    of rejection and ridicule? Have they been
    intimidated by seeing other faithful watch-
    men attacked as legalistic and judgmental?
    You may answer that question on the basis
    of your own observations. The example of
    the prophet Jonah provides dramatic evi-
    dence that it is not easy to tell it like it is.
    No one would welcome his assignment.
    Is it any easier to stand before practic-
    ing sinners of every hue and variety and
    deliver the ultimatum of Jesus, “Go and sin
    no more?” As an ambassador for God, I can
    tell you that there is a terrible temptation
    to feel sorry for those drug addicts, drunk-
    ards and prostitutes, and to tone down the
    requirements to give up the practice of
    sin. We want to be easy on them. We don’t
    want to discourage them with the thought
    that they must change their lifestyle. At
    least, not immediately. Somehow we want
    to keep accommodating the carnal nature Alone in the Crowd 11
    just a little bit to make religion more com-
    fortable for them.
    Question: Is there any true religion that
    endorses the continued practice of sin in
    any degree whatsoever? Is there any state-
    ment in the entire Bible which conveys the
    thought that we should only diminish the
    amount of sin we commit? Can the justify-
    ing, converting grace of Christ cover the
    practice of any deliberate, known sin? Paul
    declares, “For the flesh lusteth against the
    Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and
    these are contrary the one to the other: so
    that ye cannot do the things that ye would”
    (Galatians 5:17).
    If that statement is not strong enough
    on the subject, read the further word of
    the apostle in Romans 8:13, “If ye live after
    the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the
    spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye
    shall live.” There it is! We can do one or the
    other, but we cannot do both at the same
    time. We either live after the flesh or after 12 Alone in the Crowd
    the Spirit. Paul said, “These are contrary
    the one to the other.” That is plain enough.
    There can be no sharing of authority be-
    tween these two forces. We must mortify
    the deeds of the body or accommodate
    them. Which will it be? It can’t be both.
    But let’s return to our point about fol-
    lowing the crowd. We have discovered that
    the majority is usually wrong, and that they
    do not want to be told about their sins. We
    have also considered how difficult it is to
    tell that crowd how wrong they are. Right
    here it seems appropriate to read the words
    of Jesus, “Ye are they which justify your-
    selves before men; but God knoweth your
    hearts: for that which is highly esteemed
    among men is abomination in the sight of
    God” (Luke 16:15).
    Hazards of the “Highly Esteemed”
    The last sentence contains a
    priceless principle for all of us
    today. Jesus spoke it to the Pharisees who Alone in the Crowd 13
    were shamelessly justifying their unjust
    ways because they conformed to the ac-
    ceptable codes of the day. He clearly in-
    dicated that the majority opinion would
    be on the wrong side of almost every
    question. He already had declared that
    most people would enter the broad road
    to destruction. Their views and prac-
    tices would represent those who are
    wrong—those who will be lost. Yet it
    would be held by the largest number—in
    contrast to the “few” in the narrow road.
    The shocking thing is that those things
    “highly esteemed” among the majority of
    men are abominable in God’s sight.
    It is not hard to see the truth of this state-
    ment when we look at the principles upon
    which society operates today. Whether we
    are looking at dress, diet, entertainment,
    or educational standards, there is a vast
    difference between the world’s ways and
    God’s ideals. Sometimes we chafe, like the
    Israelites, because we cannot be like the 14 Alone in the Crowd
    nations around us, but God has given us a
    better, higher standard to live by.
    Many have marveled at the almost as-
    cetic doctrine of holiness by separation
    which is expounded throughout the Bible.
    Why did God forbid His ancient people to
    mingle and intermarry with the heathen
    nations? The New Testament writers also
    make repeated calls for spiritual Israel to
    “come out” and be separate from a system
    which they called “the world.” Those called-
    out ones are identified as “the church,”
    which is always set in opposition to “the
    world.” The original word for church comes
    from two Greek words: ek, meaning “out
    of,” and kalleo, meaning “called”—eklesia:
    the church, the called-out ones.
    Why does God not approve a close re-
    lationship of His “few” followers with the
    “many there be” in the broad road? And
    why does the majority choose to be lost?
    How does Satan draw them in such masses
    to follow his program? The answers to those Alone in the Crowd 15
    questions will also provide an explanation
    for the insistent call of prophets and gospel
    writers to separate from that majority.
    Here is why so many have been cap-
    tured by the evil one: his fraternization
    scheme is based upon a recognized law of
    the mind which decrees that we gradually
    adapt to the people we associate with. The
    unconscious effect of hearing and seeing
    their words and lifestyle is to slowly build
    toward an acceptance of what was once
    repugnant. The molding influence of such
    exposure breaks down the moral reserve,
    and eventually leads to a conciliatory at-
    titude toward sin.
    The whole scheme is deadly because
    the leavening process takes place so subtly.
    At no point is the collaborator aware that he
    is being imperceptibly manipulated by the
    people around him. No danger signals are
    raised. The conscience bends by degrees
    toward the new tolerant mindset. This is
    the way spiritual “status stones” have been 16 Alone in the Crowd
    altered. The slow shift from Bible principle
    to majority opinion is usually made with a
    minimum of spiritual conflict because of
    the gradual nature of the change.
    Survey after survey has revealed how
    moral standards have been lowered under
    the deadening influence of environmen-
    tal input. There is no way to be holy while
    mingling closely with the unholy. We can-
    not expose the mind constantly to abomi-
    nations without suffering the consequenc-
    es. The Spirit of God made no mistake in
    urging separation from the world of the
    flesh. Even prayer and Bible study cannot
    continue to protect against a presumptuous
    choice to watch alluring sinful scenes and
    listen to corrupting words and sounds.
    The Fallacy of Following Feeling
    Surely we can now better under-
    stand why the lesson of the shrimp
    is important for us to understand. It is
    never safe to follow the crowd. But now Alone in the Crowd 17
    let’s look at the second dangerous conse-
    quence of a faulty status stone. The shrimp
    trusted in feelings which were produced
    by powerful outside forces working on the
    status stone. Obviously these feelings were
    inaccurate and undependable because the
    stone in its head had been changed.
    Mark it down well: it is no safer to fol-
    low feeling than it is to follow the crowd.
    No matter how secure the shrimp felt about
    the tug of that magnet, it led him to act
    wrongly and make a fool of himself. Satan
    would be delighted to lead every one of us
    into doing the same thing. He has already
    done it to the majority by causing them
    to trust some other “stone of standing”
    than the Word of God. Using the power-
    ful magnet of a glamorous, glittering soci-
    ety, Satan has created some very pleasur-
    able but deceptive feelings. Millions have
    been lured into a state of false security in
    which they feel ridiculously overconfident
    and safe. It is almost as though they have 18 Alone in the Crowd
    been hypnotized and are obeying the will
    of some other mind than their own.
    Does most of the world actually oper-
    ate under a trance condition brought on by
    Satan’s hypnotic powers? None can doubt
    the ability of mind scientists to produce
    such a state in almost anyone who will look
    at them or listen to them. There is always
    some point of contact used in putting a
    subject under hypnosis. Attention must be
    focused upon a light or some other object
    as well as the words which are being spo-
    ken. Without this deliberate attentiveness
    no one can be brought under the power of
    the hypnotist.
    Does Satan have to get a similar atten-
    tion in order to bring anyone under his
    control? He also uses a point of contact,
    usually an indulged weakness, an appeal
    of the flesh, or some other area of tempta-
    tion. Our only safety is to never allow our-
    selves to watch or listen to his appealing
    attention devices. Alone in the Crowd 19
    When feelings become the criteria of
    testing truth, an unreasonably defensive at-
    titude is generated. The most sincere people
    are convinced beyond all question that they
    are right and everyone else is totally wrong.
    In the secure comfort of their subjective
    feeling they resist all logic or reason based
    on objective truth outside themselves.
    Can such feeling or moods be danger-
    ous for a Christian? Indeed, Satan uses
    them to destroy the ability to act rational-
    ly. Suppose you are seated in a small room
    with no ventilation. An oil-burning stove
    has been consuming the oxygen for some
    time. Gradually you become so drowsy
    that your brain is barely able to think. You
    do not feel like moving from your chair.
    Especially, you do not feel like getting up
    to open a window or a door. Yet your feel-
    ing against moving is a danger sign that
    you must make yourself act immediately
    to get more oxygen into the room or you
    will never move again. 20 Alone in the Crowd
    Have you ever been in the mood not to
    pray, or not to read your Bible? Of course
    you have. So have I. Should we yield to that
    feeling? Listen, prayer is the breath of the
    soul just as oxygen is the breath of the body.
    Our mood not to pray and study is a sig-
    nal that we had better make ourselves do
    it quickly because our spiritual life is being
    threatened. That is the time to force our-
    selves into the closet, onto our knees, and
    as we pray, the spiritual desires begin to re-
    turn. Very soon prayer is restored as a joy-
    ful, fulfilling privilege. But unless we break
    the hypnotic spell of Satan’s “feeling” trap
    by acting against his point of contact, we are
    placed in great spiritual jeopardy. The truth
    is that we must act or be acted upon.
    Acting or Reacting
    This brings us to the fantastic real-
    ization that every single one of us
    is either living a life based upon acting or
    reacting. We make our own independent Alone in the Crowd 21
    decisions about the kind of life we will live
    or else we simply react to the way other
    people treat us. In the latter case we turn
    the direction of our life over to someone
    else and allow them to determine the kind
    of person we shall be.
    Please take note that we are still talk-
    ing about Satan’s manipulation of our feel-
    ings, but in this case he is working through
    some other person to exercise his control.
    It is likely that no one is beyond being in-
    fluenced to some degree by the actions
    of others, but the vast majority are actu-
    ally the pawns of whatever circumstances
    happen to develop around them. Instead
    of basing their most important decisions
    upon deliberative reason or prayer, they
    impulsively strike out in any or all direc-
    tions, depending on the way their emo-
    tions have been stirred by others.
    Dr. Hunter was an English heart sur-
    geon who was himself afflicted with cor-
    onary disease. One day he commented 22 Alone in the Crowd
    to a colleague, “My life is in the hands of
    any rascal who chooses to annoy me.” His
    self-prophecy proved to be true. Later on
    someone dealt with him in a manner that
    made him furious, and he dropped dead
    of a heart attack. What an illustration that
    education and high intelligence cannot
    protect us from the folly of our fallen hu-
    man nature! All his honorable degrees of
    learning did not give Dr. Hunter control
    of his own spirit. He literally allowed an-
    other individual to make the decision as to
    whether he would live or die.
    But the doctor’s mistake is minuscule
    compared to that of those who let others
    actually determine their eternal destiny. All
    around us every day we observe the dread-
    ful playing out of an unnecessary drama,
    and often church members are involved in
    it. People permit their volatile emotions to
    surge out of control in retaliation for the way
    they are treated, and some of the darkest
    sins are recorded against them in the books Alone in the Crowd 23
    of heaven. Many will lose their souls because
    they refuse to assume the responsibility for
    their own course of action. In fact, they
    don’t act at all; they merely react. We can
    say without reservation that those who do
    not lay hold of divine power to live a disci-
    plined, controlled life will be ruled by Satan,
    either directly or indirectly. Not one person
    has that kind of strength within himself. The
    ability to control one’s own life by resisting
    every provocation of both friends and en-
    emies must come from God’s grace within.
    The real secret of protection from re-
    acting is found in Paul’s counsel to the
    Philippians, “Let this mind be in you which
    was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5).
    No one can strike back if he is thinking
    thoughts of Jesus. On the cross Christ gave
    no sign of vengeance, irritation, or retalia-
    tion. His prayer was, “Father, forgive them,
    for they know not what they do.”
    Is that state of mind accessible to men
    in the flesh? Indeed, Jesus possessed the 24 Alone in the Crowd
    same fallen human nature that all children
    inherit from their parents. Yet He never
    reacted to a single needling rebuff or in-
    sult. The kind of serenity that He exhib-
    ited is promised to every believing child
    of God who will claim it in faith. Paul
    declared in 2 Corinthians 10:5, “Casting
    down imaginations, and every high thing
    that exalteth itself against the knowledge
    of God, and bringing into captivity every
    thought to the obedience of Christ.” Let
    no one believe that this kind of integra-
    tion with the thoughts and mind of Christ
    can come without both struggle and sur-
    render. The character is conformed to the
    divine pattern by two things operating in
    conjunction with the Holy Spirit—man’s
    will and man’s actions. God will never
    do these two things for us. Each person
    must make the decision to turn from sin,
    and then he must begin to act against the
    sin. Neither of these steps would be ef-
    fective were they not accompanied by the Alone in the Crowd 25
    enabling power of the Spirit. No man has
    the power to stop reacting in anger to the
    way he is treated, but he does have the
    power to choose to stop reacting. He also
    has the ability to start resisting the impulse
    to react. Do those two steps bring the vic-
    tory? Indeed, when taken after claiming
    the promised deliverance, they provide
    dramatic evidence of true faith. And faith,
    in turn, moves the omnipotent arm of God
    to intervene with shattering force against
    the practice of any sin.
    Dealing with Offenses
    Along with faith it is also very
    important to develop a philoso-
    phy of understanding toward those who
    may seem to be giving offense. Much of
    the problem stems from an unwillingness
    or inability to consider why that person is
    acting in such a manner.
    It is a demonstrated fact that our own
    attitude toward the offender determines 26 Alone in the Crowd
    to a large degree how we react to what
    he does against us. Unfortunately there
    is very little inclination to be thoughtful
    and reasonable when one is under physi-
    cal or verbal attack. Impulsive anger takes
    control, and we strike out blindly in self-
    protection. Were we capable of keeping on
    top of those oversensitive feelings it would
    give us time to ask and answer a few ques-
    tions about the other person’s motives.
    Even a few moments of rational thought
    could suggest the possibility that the of-
    fender might be operating under false in-
    formation and be very sincere in what he
    is doing. This could certainly ameliorate
    our own reactions toward him.
    Years ago I heard a story which has
    been such an inspiration to me that I have
    shared it often throughout my ministry.
    Many times I have needed to tell myself the
    story again to help ease through some es-
    pecially difficult time of personal stress. It
    concerns an old Greek philosopher by the Alone in the Crowd 27
    name of Philip who was walking along the
    street with a friend one day. It so happened
    that an enemy of Philip was watching him
    approach from an overhead window. As
    the two passed by he threw a bucket of
    water onto the wise old man. Without the
    slightest reaction to the outrage, Philip
    continued his conversation as though
    nothing at all had happened. His friend
    stopped and offered to help him find and
    punish the man who had treated him so
    rudely. Philip quietly replied that no one
    had done him any wrong. The friend re-
    monstrated in amazement, “But the man
    threw water all over you. You are soaking
    wet.” “No,” replied the philosopher, “you
    are mistaken. He did not throw any water
    on me. He threw it on the man he thought
    I was.”
    What an attitude! And what a world of
    difference it would make if everyone had
    such a spirit of selfless regard for the feelings
    of others. Most of the personal alienations, 28 Alone in the Crowd
    racial problems, and international disputes
    could be settled in a moment if everyone
    practiced the philosophy of Philip.
    Some time ago I was preparing a young
    mother for baptism. As I visited her for a
    final review of the doctrines of the church,
    she suddenly burst into tears. “I can’t be
    baptized,” she cried. “Last night my moth-
    er visited me and reminded me that since
    I hate my brother it would not be right
    to enter into baptism.” Under my gentle
    prodding, Carol agreed to share for the
    very first time why she had hated her only
    brother for all those years. Not even her
    mother knew the reasons behind that bit-
    ter spirit. When she was seven years old her
    teenage brother began to force her sexually
    and threaten her if she ever told anyone.
    For eight years she suffered unimaginable
    abuse at the hands of that cruel brother.
    I could truly understand Carol’s fester-
    ing anger and hatred toward her brother.
    I was overwhelmed by her justified sense Alone in the Crowd 29
    of being dehumanized and demeaned.
    How could I say anything that could pos-
    sible change her feelings over those deep
    psychological pains and scars? Then I re-
    membered the story of the old Greek phi-
    losopher. After sharing it with her, I asked
    for more information about that despised
    brother. Was he ever a Christian? “No,” said
    Carol, “he was the opposite of a Christian.
    He seemed always to be under the control
    of devils, and he’s still the same way.”
    I said, “Carol, isn’t it a tragedy that your
    brother never knew the power of God’s
    grace in his life? He was indeed controlled
    by Satan in all he was doing. Without God
    in his life there was no chance for him to
    resist the things Satan was doing through
    him. He was manipulated and used by the
    devil. If only he had known the Lord Jesus,
    he would never have been that way. He
    would have treated you with love and re-
    spect. Now you tell me that he is still not a
    Christian. He is still being forced to do evil 30 Alone in the Crowd
    things and has no power to resist. What a
    difference it would make if he could learn
    about Jesus and accept Him. He would have
    the same joy you have found in Christ. We
    need to pray for him, Carol, that somehow
    he can get out from under this evil power
    that has been using him.”
    As I talked the tears began to flow
    again, but this time they were tears of sor-
    row and compassion for a lost brother who
    was more to be pitied and prayed for than
    to be hated. Carol ended up on her knees
    that day, asking God to save her brother
    from his miserable captivity to Satan’s pow-
    er. Her own personal hatred was washed
    away in those tears, and the next day I had
    the joy of seeing the old Carol buried in
    the watery grave. Her life was transformed
    when she began to realize that her brother
    did not even know her—not really. If he
    had been sensitive to her as a person, he
    would not have treated her that way. His
    understanding was distorted by sin. Alone in the Crowd 31
    Can we believe the same thing about
    people who mistreat us along the road of
    life? Would they act the same way if they
    fully understood what they were doing?
    Can’t we assume that they don’t really have
    the full information about us, about our
    feelings, and who we really are? If only we
    could give them the benefit of that doubt
    and say, “They didn’t do it to the real me.
    They did it to the person they thought I
    was.” Then we can feel sorry for them, be-
    cause they don’t know any better. And best
    of all we can even begin to pray for them.
    So we are brought back again to the
    two great lessons taught by the shrimp
    who have rocks in their heads. We cannot
    measure what is right and wrong by our
    subjective feelings or by what the majority
    are doing. Our stone of standing must be
    the Word of God. Regardless of the crowd,
    regardless of our moods or feelings, re-
    gardless of the way people treat us, we
    must choose to order our lives on the 32 Alone in the Crowd
    basis of divine principle. Like Paul we say,
    “I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I
    live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me. And
    the life I now live, I live by the faith of him
    who loved me, and gave himself for me”
    (Galatians 2:20).
    A Little Light Reading. Alone in the crowd. Joe Crews. Recently I discovered some very interesting things about a little sea creature that rates rather low on the biblical scale. The unclean shrimp has a most marvelous manner of changing clothes six or eight times a year through a process called molting. Apparently a  Alone in the Crowd new suit begins to grow underneath the old skin. By scraping around on the rocks, the shrimp begins to shred and loosen the older outer layer, which soon sloughs off completely, revealing the classy new cov- ering underneath. At the time of each molting, another fascinating phenomenon occurs. In re- sponse to some built-in primitive instinct every shrimp deliberately places a grain of sand in a special place in its head. At every molting cycle the little rock is discarded along with the old skin, and a new grain of sand is put carefully in place. Because of the unique function of those rocks, they have been named “status stones” or stones of standing. They are ab- solutely necessary for the survival of these hardy marine animals. Without them the shrimp would be constantly confused and disoriented. In the wake of surging tides and currents they are tumbled over and over and upside down. It is only by feeling Alone in the Crowd  the slight tug of gravity on the rock in their head that they can recognize whether they are upside down or right side up. In His great love and wisdom, God provided this mechanism to enable the lowly shrimp to keep a dignified balance amid the turbulent elements of its habitat. Since it is obvious that no shrimp con- fided these facts to me, you might wonder how this amazing information came to light. Several years ago a marine biolo- gist conducted an experiment on several shrimp that had been placed in a large aquarium. In the bottom of the aquarium the scientist placed steel filings instead of sand. When molting time came, each one of the shrimp picked up a piece of steel, in- stead of a rock, and placed it in its head. Then the biologist brought a power- ful electromagnet and placed it over the top of the aquarium. Immediately all the shrimp flipped upside down and began to swim around in an inverted position.  Alone in the Crowd The pull of the magnet on the steel sliv- er was stronger than the tug of gravity, and they believed that up was down and down was up. To make the experiment more dramatic the scientist then brought a shrimp from the ocean and placed it in the aquarium. Naturally this newcomer on the scene was paddling around in the proper upright position. Can’t you imagine the consternation that probably was provoked by the appear- ance of this oddball in the tank? It seems highly likely that some nasty whispers began to circulate within those troubled waters. “Who does this nut think he is? Who is he trying to impress? Does this weirdo imagine that he is going to show us a better way to swim? Why is he doing it upside down?” You see, that steel-in-the-head, wrong- way crowd had no inkling that the recent visitor was really the only shrimp that was swimming correctly. They had always Alone in the Crowd  depended on two things to prove they were right-side up—their feeling, and what the majority around them was doing. But now that their status stone had been tampered with, they were deceived into believing a lie on both counts. Following Feeling or Following the Crowd The more I thought of that story, the more I realized that all of us are in an aquarium as we make our way through this world. Powerful magnets of tempta- tion are all around us trying to disturb our spiritual balance and turn us upside down. Those who trust in feeling and majority opinion are easily up-ended by the strong attraction of outside forces. Consoled by the presence of so many others about them doing the same thing, they soon be- gin to see everything in relation to their distorted view. They reverse all the signs in order to read them better, and develop  Alone in the Crowd a firm conviction that they are balanced and correct, while everyone differing from them is wrong. Eventually they see wrong as right and right as wrong. Anyone who goes contrary to his or her perceptions is instantly branded as a fanatic or a critical troublemaker. This points up one great truth: We can- not measure right and wrong by our feeling or by what the majority are doing! We need something from outside ourselves to tell us where the truth lies. Our impulses may be just as real as the pull of the magnet, but they could also be just as misleading. Our numerous friends may be most respect- able and religious, but their status stone could be linked to the same false guidance system, cleverly sabotaged by the enemy. There is only one true, infallible status stone for the Christian, and that is the Bible. When that Word is placed in the mind, it provides a standard of truth which is al- ways dependable. Every impulse of feeling Alone in the Crowd  should be tested by it. The total lifestyle, including words, actions, and thoughts must be brought under the supervision of that one great directional control center. It is no exaggeration to state that most de- viations from God’s will today are based upon either following feeling or following the crowd. How important it is for us to study these two powerful weapons that Satan utilized with such devilish expertise. Both of them are rooted within man’s deepest psychological needs. We often overlook the fact that our spiritual enemy has been studying human nature for almost 6,000 years—quite a bit longer than the most successful psychiatrist in practice today. He has also experimented with our emo- tional weaknesses, using these to exploit us in our most vulnerable moments. How many have fallen prey to his ma- nipulative devices? One clear look at our flesh-oriented society provides the answer.  Alone in the Crowd Jesus saw it long before it happened and tried to warn his disciples and us about the strength of those attacks. He said, “Strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth into life, and few there be that find it” (Matthew 7:14). On another occasion the Master asked this significant question, “When the son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:8). In the same discourse He declared, “As it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man” (Luke 17:26). Obviously only a small proportion of earth’s inhabitants will escape from the overwhelming deceptions of the last days and be saved. A little remnant, as always, will be more concerned about doing right than pleasing self, the crowd, or some oth- er individual. The record of history con- sistently chronicles the story of that small company of dissenters who dared to reject the comfortable appeal of the crowd. The Alone in the Crowd  majority seem never to be searching for truth so much as for a smooth, easy, con- venient religion which will allow them to live as they please. To them any doctrine which demands self-denial or a disciplined lifestyle is bad news. I s It Easy to Preach the Truth? This is undoubtedly why there is such a one-sided gospel being preached in most churches today. It is pleasant to speak things that are appreciated and well received. No messenger of God is hesitant to declare the precious truths about justi- fication and free grace which require only faith and acceptance. Yet there is another side of the gospel which is concerned with fruits and good works. It is called sanctifi- cation. It speaks of obedience and Christ- like behavior in every life situation. That is the aspect of righteousness by faith which is very unpopular with the masses today. It demands action and obedience. 10 Alone in the Crowd Are some preachers afraid to deliver the unadorned truth on this subject for fear of rejection and ridicule? Have they been intimidated by seeing other faithful watch- men attacked as legalistic and judgmental? You may answer that question on the basis of your own observations. The example of the prophet Jonah provides dramatic evi- dence that it is not easy to tell it like it is. No one would welcome his assignment. Is it any easier to stand before practic- ing sinners of every hue and variety and deliver the ultimatum of Jesus, “Go and sin no more?” As an ambassador for God, I can tell you that there is a terrible temptation to feel sorry for those drug addicts, drunk- ards and prostitutes, and to tone down the requirements to give up the practice of sin. We want to be easy on them. We don’t want to discourage them with the thought that they must change their lifestyle. At least, not immediately. Somehow we want to keep accommodating the carnal nature Alone in the Crowd 11 just a little bit to make religion more com- fortable for them. Question: Is there any true religion that endorses the continued practice of sin in any degree whatsoever? Is there any state- ment in the entire Bible which conveys the thought that we should only diminish the amount of sin we commit? Can the justify- ing, converting grace of Christ cover the practice of any deliberate, known sin? Paul declares, “For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would” (Galatians 5:17). If that statement is not strong enough on the subject, read the further word of the apostle in Romans 8:13, “If ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.” There it is! We can do one or the other, but we cannot do both at the same time. We either live after the flesh or after 12 Alone in the Crowd the Spirit. Paul said, “These are contrary the one to the other.” That is plain enough. There can be no sharing of authority be- tween these two forces. We must mortify the deeds of the body or accommodate them. Which will it be? It can’t be both. But let’s return to our point about fol- lowing the crowd. We have discovered that the majority is usually wrong, and that they do not want to be told about their sins. We have also considered how difficult it is to tell that crowd how wrong they are. Right here it seems appropriate to read the words of Jesus, “Ye are they which justify your- selves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God” (Luke 16:15). Hazards of the “Highly Esteemed” The last sentence contains a priceless principle for all of us today. Jesus spoke it to the Pharisees who Alone in the Crowd 13 were shamelessly justifying their unjust ways because they conformed to the ac- ceptable codes of the day. He clearly in- dicated that the majority opinion would be on the wrong side of almost every question. He already had declared that most people would enter the broad road to destruction. Their views and prac- tices would represent those who are wrong—those who will be lost. Yet it would be held by the largest number—in contrast to the “few” in the narrow road. The shocking thing is that those things “highly esteemed” among the majority of men are abominable in God’s sight. It is not hard to see the truth of this state- ment when we look at the principles upon which society operates today. Whether we are looking at dress, diet, entertainment, or educational standards, there is a vast difference between the world’s ways and God’s ideals. Sometimes we chafe, like the Israelites, because we cannot be like the 14 Alone in the Crowd nations around us, but God has given us a better, higher standard to live by. Many have marveled at the almost as- cetic doctrine of holiness by separation which is expounded throughout the Bible. Why did God forbid His ancient people to mingle and intermarry with the heathen nations? The New Testament writers also make repeated calls for spiritual Israel to “come out” and be separate from a system which they called “the world.” Those called- out ones are identified as “the church,” which is always set in opposition to “the world.” The original word for church comes from two Greek words: ek, meaning “out of,” and kalleo, meaning “called”—eklesia: the church, the called-out ones. Why does God not approve a close re- lationship of His “few” followers with the “many there be” in the broad road? And why does the majority choose to be lost? How does Satan draw them in such masses to follow his program? The answers to those Alone in the Crowd 15 questions will also provide an explanation for the insistent call of prophets and gospel writers to separate from that majority. Here is why so many have been cap- tured by the evil one: his fraternization scheme is based upon a recognized law of the mind which decrees that we gradually adapt to the people we associate with. The unconscious effect of hearing and seeing their words and lifestyle is to slowly build toward an acceptance of what was once repugnant. The molding influence of such exposure breaks down the moral reserve, and eventually leads to a conciliatory at- titude toward sin. The whole scheme is deadly because the leavening process takes place so subtly. At no point is the collaborator aware that he is being imperceptibly manipulated by the people around him. No danger signals are raised. The conscience bends by degrees toward the new tolerant mindset. This is the way spiritual “status stones” have been 16 Alone in the Crowd altered. The slow shift from Bible principle to majority opinion is usually made with a minimum of spiritual conflict because of the gradual nature of the change. Survey after survey has revealed how moral standards have been lowered under the deadening influence of environmen- tal input. There is no way to be holy while mingling closely with the unholy. We can- not expose the mind constantly to abomi- nations without suffering the consequenc- es. The Spirit of God made no mistake in urging separation from the world of the flesh. Even prayer and Bible study cannot continue to protect against a presumptuous choice to watch alluring sinful scenes and listen to corrupting words and sounds. The Fallacy of Following Feeling Surely we can now better under- stand why the lesson of the shrimp is important for us to understand. It is never safe to follow the crowd. But now Alone in the Crowd 17 let’s look at the second dangerous conse- quence of a faulty status stone. The shrimp trusted in feelings which were produced by powerful outside forces working on the status stone. Obviously these feelings were inaccurate and undependable because the stone in its head had been changed. Mark it down well: it is no safer to fol- low feeling than it is to follow the crowd. No matter how secure the shrimp felt about the tug of that magnet, it led him to act wrongly and make a fool of himself. Satan would be delighted to lead every one of us into doing the same thing. He has already done it to the majority by causing them to trust some other “stone of standing” than the Word of God. Using the power- ful magnet of a glamorous, glittering soci- ety, Satan has created some very pleasur- able but deceptive feelings. Millions have been lured into a state of false security in which they feel ridiculously overconfident and safe. It is almost as though they have 18 Alone in the Crowd been hypnotized and are obeying the will of some other mind than their own. Does most of the world actually oper- ate under a trance condition brought on by Satan’s hypnotic powers? None can doubt the ability of mind scientists to produce such a state in almost anyone who will look at them or listen to them. There is always some point of contact used in putting a subject under hypnosis. Attention must be focused upon a light or some other object as well as the words which are being spo- ken. Without this deliberate attentiveness no one can be brought under the power of the hypnotist. Does Satan have to get a similar atten- tion in order to bring anyone under his control? He also uses a point of contact, usually an indulged weakness, an appeal of the flesh, or some other area of tempta- tion. Our only safety is to never allow our- selves to watch or listen to his appealing attention devices. Alone in the Crowd 19 When feelings become the criteria of testing truth, an unreasonably defensive at- titude is generated. The most sincere people are convinced beyond all question that they are right and everyone else is totally wrong. In the secure comfort of their subjective feeling they resist all logic or reason based on objective truth outside themselves. Can such feeling or moods be danger- ous for a Christian? Indeed, Satan uses them to destroy the ability to act rational- ly. Suppose you are seated in a small room with no ventilation. An oil-burning stove has been consuming the oxygen for some time. Gradually you become so drowsy that your brain is barely able to think. You do not feel like moving from your chair. Especially, you do not feel like getting up to open a window or a door. Yet your feel- ing against moving is a danger sign that you must make yourself act immediately to get more oxygen into the room or you will never move again. 20 Alone in the Crowd Have you ever been in the mood not to pray, or not to read your Bible? Of course you have. So have I. Should we yield to that feeling? Listen, prayer is the breath of the soul just as oxygen is the breath of the body. Our mood not to pray and study is a sig- nal that we had better make ourselves do it quickly because our spiritual life is being threatened. That is the time to force our- selves into the closet, onto our knees, and as we pray, the spiritual desires begin to re- turn. Very soon prayer is restored as a joy- ful, fulfilling privilege. But unless we break the hypnotic spell of Satan’s “feeling” trap by acting against his point of contact, we are placed in great spiritual jeopardy. The truth is that we must act or be acted upon. Acting or Reacting This brings us to the fantastic real- ization that every single one of us is either living a life based upon acting or reacting. We make our own independent Alone in the Crowd 21 decisions about the kind of life we will live or else we simply react to the way other people treat us. In the latter case we turn the direction of our life over to someone else and allow them to determine the kind of person we shall be. Please take note that we are still talk- ing about Satan’s manipulation of our feel- ings, but in this case he is working through some other person to exercise his control. It is likely that no one is beyond being in- fluenced to some degree by the actions of others, but the vast majority are actu- ally the pawns of whatever circumstances happen to develop around them. Instead of basing their most important decisions upon deliberative reason or prayer, they impulsively strike out in any or all direc- tions, depending on the way their emo- tions have been stirred by others. Dr. Hunter was an English heart sur- geon who was himself afflicted with cor- onary disease. One day he commented 22 Alone in the Crowd to a colleague, “My life is in the hands of any rascal who chooses to annoy me.” His self-prophecy proved to be true. Later on someone dealt with him in a manner that made him furious, and he dropped dead of a heart attack. What an illustration that education and high intelligence cannot protect us from the folly of our fallen hu- man nature! All his honorable degrees of learning did not give Dr. Hunter control of his own spirit. He literally allowed an- other individual to make the decision as to whether he would live or die. But the doctor’s mistake is minuscule compared to that of those who let others actually determine their eternal destiny. All around us every day we observe the dread- ful playing out of an unnecessary drama, and often church members are involved in it. People permit their volatile emotions to surge out of control in retaliation for the way they are treated, and some of the darkest sins are recorded against them in the books Alone in the Crowd 23 of heaven. Many will lose their souls because they refuse to assume the responsibility for their own course of action. In fact, they don’t act at all; they merely react. We can say without reservation that those who do not lay hold of divine power to live a disci- plined, controlled life will be ruled by Satan, either directly or indirectly. Not one person has that kind of strength within himself. The ability to control one’s own life by resisting every provocation of both friends and en- emies must come from God’s grace within. The real secret of protection from re- acting is found in Paul’s counsel to the Philippians, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5). No one can strike back if he is thinking thoughts of Jesus. On the cross Christ gave no sign of vengeance, irritation, or retalia- tion. His prayer was, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Is that state of mind accessible to men in the flesh? Indeed, Jesus possessed the 24 Alone in the Crowd same fallen human nature that all children inherit from their parents. Yet He never reacted to a single needling rebuff or in- sult. The kind of serenity that He exhib- ited is promised to every believing child of God who will claim it in faith. Paul declared in 2 Corinthians 10:5, “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” Let no one believe that this kind of integra- tion with the thoughts and mind of Christ can come without both struggle and sur- render. The character is conformed to the divine pattern by two things operating in conjunction with the Holy Spirit—man’s will and man’s actions. God will never do these two things for us. Each person must make the decision to turn from sin, and then he must begin to act against the sin. Neither of these steps would be ef- fective were they not accompanied by the Alone in the Crowd 25 enabling power of the Spirit. No man has the power to stop reacting in anger to the way he is treated, but he does have the power to choose to stop reacting. He also has the ability to start resisting the impulse to react. Do those two steps bring the vic- tory? Indeed, when taken after claiming the promised deliverance, they provide dramatic evidence of true faith. And faith, in turn, moves the omnipotent arm of God to intervene with shattering force against the practice of any sin. Dealing with Offenses Along with faith it is also very important to develop a philoso- phy of understanding toward those who may seem to be giving offense. Much of the problem stems from an unwillingness or inability to consider why that person is acting in such a manner. It is a demonstrated fact that our own attitude toward the offender determines 26 Alone in the Crowd to a large degree how we react to what he does against us. Unfortunately there is very little inclination to be thoughtful and reasonable when one is under physi- cal or verbal attack. Impulsive anger takes control, and we strike out blindly in self- protection. Were we capable of keeping on top of those oversensitive feelings it would give us time to ask and answer a few ques- tions about the other person’s motives. Even a few moments of rational thought could suggest the possibility that the of- fender might be operating under false in- formation and be very sincere in what he is doing. This could certainly ameliorate our own reactions toward him. Years ago I heard a story which has been such an inspiration to me that I have shared it often throughout my ministry. Many times I have needed to tell myself the story again to help ease through some es- pecially difficult time of personal stress. It concerns an old Greek philosopher by the Alone in the Crowd 27 name of Philip who was walking along the street with a friend one day. It so happened that an enemy of Philip was watching him approach from an overhead window. As the two passed by he threw a bucket of water onto the wise old man. Without the slightest reaction to the outrage, Philip continued his conversation as though nothing at all had happened. His friend stopped and offered to help him find and punish the man who had treated him so rudely. Philip quietly replied that no one had done him any wrong. The friend re- monstrated in amazement, “But the man threw water all over you. You are soaking wet.” “No,” replied the philosopher, “you are mistaken. He did not throw any water on me. He threw it on the man he thought I was.” What an attitude! And what a world of difference it would make if everyone had such a spirit of selfless regard for the feelings of others. Most of the personal alienations, 28 Alone in the Crowd racial problems, and international disputes could be settled in a moment if everyone practiced the philosophy of Philip. Some time ago I was preparing a young mother for baptism. As I visited her for a final review of the doctrines of the church, she suddenly burst into tears. “I can’t be baptized,” she cried. “Last night my moth- er visited me and reminded me that since I hate my brother it would not be right to enter into baptism.” Under my gentle prodding, Carol agreed to share for the very first time why she had hated her only brother for all those years. Not even her mother knew the reasons behind that bit- ter spirit. When she was seven years old her teenage brother began to force her sexually and threaten her if she ever told anyone. For eight years she suffered unimaginable abuse at the hands of that cruel brother. I could truly understand Carol’s fester- ing anger and hatred toward her brother. I was overwhelmed by her justified sense Alone in the Crowd 29 of being dehumanized and demeaned. How could I say anything that could pos- sible change her feelings over those deep psychological pains and scars? Then I re- membered the story of the old Greek phi- losopher. After sharing it with her, I asked for more information about that despised brother. Was he ever a Christian? “No,” said Carol, “he was the opposite of a Christian. He seemed always to be under the control of devils, and he’s still the same way.” I said, “Carol, isn’t it a tragedy that your brother never knew the power of God’s grace in his life? He was indeed controlled by Satan in all he was doing. Without God in his life there was no chance for him to resist the things Satan was doing through him. He was manipulated and used by the devil. If only he had known the Lord Jesus, he would never have been that way. He would have treated you with love and re- spect. Now you tell me that he is still not a Christian. He is still being forced to do evil 30 Alone in the Crowd things and has no power to resist. What a difference it would make if he could learn about Jesus and accept Him. He would have the same joy you have found in Christ. We need to pray for him, Carol, that somehow he can get out from under this evil power that has been using him.” As I talked the tears began to flow again, but this time they were tears of sor- row and compassion for a lost brother who was more to be pitied and prayed for than to be hated. Carol ended up on her knees that day, asking God to save her brother from his miserable captivity to Satan’s pow- er. Her own personal hatred was washed away in those tears, and the next day I had the joy of seeing the old Carol buried in the watery grave. Her life was transformed when she began to realize that her brother did not even know her—not really. If he had been sensitive to her as a person, he would not have treated her that way. His understanding was distorted by sin. Alone in the Crowd 31 Can we believe the same thing about people who mistreat us along the road of life? Would they act the same way if they fully understood what they were doing? Can’t we assume that they don’t really have the full information about us, about our feelings, and who we really are? If only we could give them the benefit of that doubt and say, “They didn’t do it to the real me. They did it to the person they thought I was.” Then we can feel sorry for them, be- cause they don’t know any better. And best of all we can even begin to pray for them. So we are brought back again to the two great lessons taught by the shrimp who have rocks in their heads. We cannot measure what is right and wrong by our subjective feelings or by what the majority are doing. Our stone of standing must be the Word of God. Regardless of the crowd, regardless of our moods or feelings, re- gardless of the way people treat us, we must choose to order our lives on the 32 Alone in the Crowd basis of divine principle. Like Paul we say, “I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me. And the life I now live, I live by the faith of him who loved me, and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20).
It is a daily decision to walk in love, obedience, humility, and faith. When no one is watching, when it is difficult, when it costs something—will you still choose Christ?
