    The Mice in the Piano

    Once upon a time, there were two little mice. They were brothers, and they had lived their entire lives inside a piano. It was the only world they had ever known.

    Their parents and siblings had died of old age, leaving the two brothers as the last members of their family. They spent their days exploring their strange little world and listening in wonder to the beautiful music that constantly filled the piano.

    They could not see where the music came from.

    Their parents had taught them that the music was produced by a great and mysterious being who lived beyond their understanding—the one who played the piano.

    The two mice loved to think about this great player. They talked about him, wondered about him, and delighted in the beautiful music he produced.

    Then, one day, one of the mice went exploring.

    When he returned, he was thoughtful and unusually serious.

    “There is no great player,” he told his brother. “It is all a myth. I have seen the inside of this piano. The music is produced by wires, hammers, strings, and mechanisms. I have seen them with my own eyes!”

    The brothers abandoned their belief in the great player.

    They were convinced that they had finally discovered the truth. They understood the mechanisms of the piano, and therefore they believed they had explained away the musician.

    They examined the wires, hammers, strings, and mechanical workings repeatedly. The more they learned about how the piano worked, the more confident they became that there was no need to believe in a player.

    But they had overlooked something very important.

    Knowing how the piano works does not explain who is playing it.

    And so, while the two mice congratulated themselves on their newfound wisdom, the great player continued to play.

    The mice simply could not see him.

    The Limits of Human Understanding

    There is an important lesson in this little story.

    Human beings are intelligent. We have learned extraordinary things about the universe. We have explored the depths of the oceans, walked on the moon, examined the microscopic world, mapped the human genome, and discovered astonishing laws governing the physical universe.

    But our ability to understand something does not mean that we understand everything.

    The Bible repeatedly reminds us that humility is essential when approaching God.

    Jesus said:

    “Unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

    —Matthew 18:3

    He also said:

    “Let the little children come to Me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.”

    —Matthew 19:14

    And again:

    “Whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”

    —Luke 18:17

    Jesus is not telling us to abandon reason or become intellectually childish. Rather, He is calling us to humility, trust, and dependence upon God.

    Scripture says:

    “Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

    —Matthew 18:4

    The Christian life begins with recognizing that God is God—and we are not.

    “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.”

    —Ephesians 2:8

    And:

    “The righteous shall live by faith.”

    —Romans 1:17

    Faith is not a rejection of reason. Faith recognizes that human reason has limits.

    Living in a Skeptical Age

    In 1897, Francis Pharcellus Church wrote his famous response to eight-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon concerning her question about Santa Claus. Church observed that people can become skeptical of anything they cannot see or fully comprehend.

    Although Church was writing about Santa Claus—not God—the broader observation is worth considering.

    We live in an age that often treats what can be measured as though it were the only thing that can be real.

    But there are many things we accept as real without seeing them directly.

    We cannot see gravity.

    We cannot see thoughts.

    We cannot see love.

    We cannot see electricity itself.

    Yet we observe their effects.

    Likewise, Christians believe that although God cannot be placed under a microscope or reduced to a laboratory experiment, His existence can be considered through the evidence of creation, reason, morality, human consciousness, history, and ultimately the revelation of Jesus Christ.

    The fact that we cannot see God with our physical eyes does not prove that God does not exist.

    The mice could not see the piano player either.

    That did not mean he wasn't there.

    When People Mock Our Faith

    A close friend of mine, an Archbishop, once told me a humorous story from his childhood.

    He had been at a park with his mother when he ran over excitedly and told her that the sun was actually a star and that the stars in the sky were also suns.

    His mother, apparently overwhelmed by the complexity of the information, responded with a blunt declaration that, in essence, the sun was the sun and the stars were the stars—and that was the end of the discussion!

    Sometimes we can become uncomfortable when someone challenges what we believe.

    That is particularly true when people we respect dismiss Christianity as foolishness.

    Richard Dawkins, Woody Allen, Isaac Asimov, Mark Twain, Carl Sagan, and many others have expressed skepticism toward Christianity or belief in God.

    But Christians should not respond with anger or hatred.

    We should respond with grace.

    Forgive them. Pray for them. Love them. And share the Gospel with them.

    The Apostle Peter instructed Christians:

    “Always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks you for the reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.”

    —1 Peter 3:15

    That is an important distinction.

    We are called to defend the faith, but we are not called to be quarrelsome.

    Jesus said:

    “If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.”

    —Matthew 10:14

    And He warned:

    “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls before swine.”

    —Matthew 7:6

    There comes a time when we must recognize that arguing louder will not make someone believe.

    Our responsibility is to faithfully proclaim Christ.

    The Holy Spirit is responsible for changing hearts.

    What About Suffering?

    One of the most common objections to belief in God is the existence of suffering.

    People ask:

    “How can I believe in a loving God when there is so much suffering in the world?”

    This is a serious question, and Christians should never dismiss it with a shallow answer.

    The Bible itself contains people crying out to God in the midst of suffering. Job asked difficult questions. David cried out in the Psalms. Even Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus.

    Christianity does not pretend that suffering is imaginary.

    Instead, Christianity tells us that suffering exists in a fallen world and that God entered that suffering Himself through Jesus Christ.

    The cross is Christianity's answer to the claim that God is indifferent to human suffering.

    God did not remain distant from our pain.

    He entered our world.

    He suffered.

    He died.

    And He rose again.

    The Apostle Paul writes:

    “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”

    —Romans 8:18

    C.S. Lewis famously described pain as God's “megaphone” to a deaf world.

    Suffering does not prove that God does not exist. For many people, suffering instead becomes the very circumstance that drives them to ask the deepest questions about meaning, morality, mortality, and God.

    What About Hell?

    Another question frequently asked is:

    “How can a loving God send people to Hell?”

    The Christian answer begins with the extraordinary love of God.

    Jesus said:

    “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

    —John 3:16

    God offers salvation freely through Christ.

    The Gospel is not a message that God delights in condemning people. It is a message that God has provided a way of salvation.

    Jesus came to seek and save the lost.

    The seriousness of judgment is precisely what makes the offer of salvation so important.

    God does not force anyone to love Him.

    The Gospel calls us to repent, believe, and receive the grace of God.

    Faith and the Evidence of Creation

    The universe raises enormous questions.

    Why is there something rather than nothing?

    Why does the universe possess order?

    Why are the laws of nature intelligible?

    Why does human consciousness exist?

    Why do human beings possess an awareness of moral obligation?

    Science can investigate how many things work. But questions concerning ultimate meaning and purpose extend beyond the laboratory.

    The Christian does not believe that science is the enemy of faith.

    Quite the opposite.

    The universe is intelligible because Christians believe it was created by an intelligent God.

    The laws of nature can be investigated because Christians believe those laws reflect an ordered creation.

    The human capacity to reason can be used to explore the universe because Christians believe human beings were created by God.

    Science can tell us much about the mechanisms of the piano.

    But science alone cannot answer the question:

    Who is playing the music?

    Believers in the Scientific Community

    Christianity has never belonged exclusively to the uneducated or uninformed.

    Throughout history, many highly accomplished scientists have believed in God.

    Among them are figures such as:

    Isaac Newton, whose work transformed physics and mathematics.
    James Clerk Maxwell, one of the great figures in electromagnetic theory.
    Gregor Mendel, whose experiments established foundational principles of genetics and who was also an Augustinian friar.
    Georges Lemaître, a Catholic priest and physicist whose work on an expanding universe helped establish the foundation of what became known as Big Bang cosmology.
    Francis Collins, physician-geneticist and former director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, who has publicly identified as a Christian.
    Charles Townes, Nobel Prize-winning physicist and inventor of the maser and co-inventor of the laser, who was an openly religious Christian.

    These examples do not prove Christianity simply because these scientists believed.

    But they do demonstrate something important:

    Faith in God is not incompatible with intellectual achievement.

    A person does not have to abandon intelligence in order to believe in God.

    Nor does becoming a Christian require someone to stop asking questions.

    Christians should welcome honest questions.

    The Problem With the Piano Mice

    The two mice made a fundamental mistake.

    They confused an explanation of the mechanism with an explanation of the ultimate cause.

    They discovered the wires.

    They discovered the hammers.

    They discovered the strings.

    They discovered the machinery.

    And then they concluded:

    “Therefore, there is no piano player.”

    But that conclusion did not logically follow from their discovery.

    In fact, their discovery of the piano's complexity could have led them to ask an entirely different question:

    Who designed this?

    And that is the question we must ultimately ask about our universe.

    Where did everything come from?

    Why is there something rather than nothing?

    Why does the universe operate according to discoverable laws?

    Why does consciousness exist?

    Why do we have an innate sense that some things are genuinely right and others genuinely wrong?

    And perhaps the greatest question of all:

    Who are we, and why are we here?

    The Christian answer is that we are creatures made by our Creator.

    We are not accidents without purpose.

    We were created by God, for God, and ultimately for relationship with Him.

    We Are the Mice

    There is another lesson in the story that we must not miss.

    Perhaps the greatest danger is not being ignorant.

    Perhaps it is believing that we know everything.

    We are the mice in the piano.

    We live inside a universe vastly larger and more complicated than our minds can fully comprehend.

    We see only a fraction of reality.

    We understand only a fraction of what exists.

    And yet we sometimes look at the small portion we understand and confidently declare that nothing exists beyond it.

    The Bible reminds us:

    “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, declares the LORD.”

    —Isaiah 55:8

    And:

    “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways!”

    The proper response to a God who is greater than our understanding is not arrogance.

    It is humility.

    It is worship.

    It is faith.

    The Music Continues

    But outside their tiny world, the musician continued to play.

    The music never stopped.

    The fact that they could not see him did not mean he was absent.

    And perhaps that is where many people find themselves today.

    They have examined the mechanisms of the universe.

    They have learned about physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, and astronomy.

    They have become fascinated by the machinery.

    But they have never stopped to ask whether there is a Creator behind it all.

    The Christian message is that there is.

    His name is Jesus Christ.

    He is not merely an idea, a philosophy, or a comforting story.

    He is the Son of God who entered human history, died for our sins, and rose from the grave.

    And He calls every one of us to respond.

    Jesus said:

    The question is not merely whether we believe that God exists.

    What will we do with Jesus Christ?

We are the mice in the piano. We live inside a universe vastly larger and more complicated than our minds can fully comprehend. We see only a fraction of reality. We understand only a fraction of what exists. And yet we sometimes look at the small portion we understand and confidently declare that nothing exists beyond it. The Bible reminds us: “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, declares the LORD.” —Isaiah 55:8 And: “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways!” —Romans 11:33 The proper response to a God who is greater than our understanding is not arrogance. It is humility. It is worship. It is faith. The Music Continues The two mice eventually stopped believing in the piano player. They became convinced that they had explained everything. But outside their tiny world, the musician continued to play. The music never stopped. The fact that they could not see him did not mean he was absent. And perhaps that is where many people find themselves today. They have examined the mechanisms of the universe. They have learned about physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, and astronomy. They have become fascinated by the machinery. But they have never stopped to ask whether there is a Creator behind it all. The Christian message is that there is. His name is Jesus Christ. He is not merely an idea, a philosophy, or a comforting story. He is the Son of God who entered human history, died for our sins, and rose from the grave. And He calls every one of us to respond. Jesus said: “Whoever acknowledges Me before others, I will also acknowledge before My Father in heaven.” —Matthew 10:32 The question is not merely whether we believe that God exists. The deeper question is: What will we do with Jesus Christ? The piano is playing. The music is all around us. The question is whether we will remain convinced that there is nothing beyond the wires and hammers—or whether we will humble ourselves, listen carefully, and seek the One who is playing the music.     *Sometimes, people wait until they are buffeted by severe suffering, when it appears as if all hope is lost, when their human efforts have failed, before seeking God. They miss the crucial turning point, unlike David who cried out to God: "early will I seek thee... my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee." How wise it is for people to turn to the Lord early, for then they are able to prevent the experiences that leave them bruised all through life, as happened to Jonah.*

    *Jonah's suffering was avoidable. He was sent by God to take the message of salvation to Nineveh, but instead of obeying, he consciously rebelled against God. He bought a ticket and boarded a ship heading in the wrong direction. He thought he could outwit God. But there is no hiding place from God. He trailed Jonah in his escape ship with a tempest, and when he was about to be thrown into the sea, God prepared a whale to swallow him. This is in itself an act of mercy, for it is physically impossible to be in the belly of the whale for three days without dying. It means that God allowed Jonah to sink to the depth of hopelessness in the valley of the shadow of death, and yet granted him the grace to consciously bow at last, to His demands.*

    *Deep in the belly of the fish, Jonah at last, cried out for mercy from God. He was mortified at the prospect of drowning at sea, and being eternally separated from God. He remembered God, and began to plead passionately to Him for another chance at life. He admitted that he had forsaken his only source of mercy. Now repentant, Jonah pledged his loyalty to God, and promised to redeem his vows, which presumably, included going anywhere the Lord sent him. Expectedly, God graciously extended His salvation to him, and commanded the whale to vomit out Jonah.*

    *You must avoid being the architect of your misfortune, and flee from the temptation to reject God's word. You do not need to go through near-death experiences before retracing your steps from rebellion and disobedience. Where you have strayed from God's leading and guidance, and have erected your own devices, or excused your moral failures and weakness in character, you must seek God's mercy, asking for grace to follow Him faithfully, serve Him diligently and obey Him completely. Once He sees your sincerity of purpose, He will pardon and bring you back to His perfect will.*

Though Ella was disappointed at first, she started to improve as she practised. When the right time came for piano lessons, she was prepared and more excited than ever. Ella realized that God's timing had made everything better.

    *Sometimes, waiting can be hard, but it helps us grow in patience, trust, and preparation. God knows what is best for us and when the right time will come. Trusting His timing means we are allowing Him to work in our lives in the best way possible. God's timing is always perfect, and when the right moment comes, we will be ready to receive His blessings.*

    *FROM THE DEPTHS TO DELIVERANCE: LESSONS FROM JONAH'S PRAYER*

    *TEXT:* JONAH 2:1–10

    1. Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly,
    2. and said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, And he heard me; Out of the belly of hell cried I, And thou heardest my voice.
    3. For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; And the floods compassed me about: All thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
    4. Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; Yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
    5. The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: The depth closed me round about, The weeds were wrapped about my head.

    *INTRODUCTION*

    On October 13, 2010, the world watched with amazement as 33 Chilean miners were rescued after spending 69 days trapped nearly 2,300 feet underground following a mine collapse. For weeks, they lived in darkness with limited supplies, uncertain whether they would ever see daylight again. Yet they prayed together, encouraged one another, and held on to hope until the day rescue finally came. Their deliverance became an international testimony of perseverance and hope in seemingly impossible circumstances.
    Jonah's experience was even more extraordinary. Because of his disobedience, he found himself in the depths of the sea and inside a great fish. What seemed like the end of his life became the place where he rediscovered the mercy of God. In the darkest moment of his life, Jonah prayed and God answered. Often, God allows us to reach the depths of helplessness so that we may discover the heights of His grace. *“Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver thee, and thou shall glorify Me.”* ( Psalm 50:15)

    The book of Jonah chapter 2 teaches us that sincere repentance, steadfast faith and grateful obedience open the door to God's restoring mercy. Jonah discovered that God's mercy is greater than human failure and that no circumstance is beyond His power to redeem.
    The question for each of us today is: When God graciously delivers and restores us, will we return to our old ways, or will we rise in grateful obedience and faithfully fulfill His calling?

    Jonah's prayer reminds us that no place is too deep for God's grace. The depths of the sea could not separate Jonah from the presence of the Lord. What appeared to be a prison became a place of prayer, repentance and renewal. Many believers experience seasons when they feel overwhelmed by failure, guilt, disappointment or suffering. Jonah's testimony assures us that God hears the cry of the repentant heart.

    *1. The Cry of Genuine Repentance*

    a. From inside the great fish, Jonah turned to God in humble prayer, which is the recognition of his distress. Jonah acknowledged that he was in great trouble and could not save himself.
    ‭*The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: A broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.* (Psalm 51:17) God hears the humble cry of those who sincerely turn back to Him. Faith clings to God's mercy, rejects false hopes and worships Him even in adversity.
    b. Jonah recognized that God was still in control, even in the midst of his suffering. Though feeling cast away, Jonah looked again toward God's holy temple in faith. God welcomes sincere repentance. No matter how far we have wandered, His mercy remains available to those who return to Him.

    *Questions*

    i. When I fail, do I run from God or return to Him in repentance?
    ii. Am I willing to acknowledge God's sovereignty even during painful experiences?

    *2. The Confidence of Growing Faith*

    a. Although Jonah remained inside the fish, his prayer shifted from despair to confident trust.
    Jonah remembered the Lord even when hope seemed to disappear. Jonah declared that those who cling to worthless idols forsake God's mercy.
    *“Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”* (1 John 5:21)
    b. Jonah promised to offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and fulfill his vows. True faith remembers God's mercy, rejects false securities, and responds with worship and renewed commitment.

    *Questions*

    i What "idols" or misplaced confidences might be competing with my trust in God?
    ii. Do I thank God only after deliverance or do I worship Him while I am still waiting?

    *3. The Celebration of God's Great Deliverance*

    a. God answered Jonah's prayer and commanded the fish to release him onto dry land. God delivers His people according to His perfect timing and restores them for His purposes.
    The same God who prepared the fish also commanded it to release Jonah. God delivered Jonah at exactly the right moment.*“He has made everything beautiful in its time.”* (Ecclesiastes 3:11)
    b. God restored Jonah, not merely for his comfort, but so he could fulfill the mission to Nineveh.
    God's deliverance is never an end in itself. He restores us so that we may return to faithful service.

    *Questions*

    i. After experiencing God's deliverance, am I faithfully fulfilling His purpose for my life?
    ii. Do I trust God's timing, even when His answer seems delayed?

    *Prayer Points*

    1. “Lord, give me a humble heart that quickly turns back to You whenever I stray.”
    2. “Father, strengthen my faith to trust You even when I cannot see the way forward.”
    3. “Lord, restore every area of my life that has been damaged by sin, failure or discouragement.”
    4. Heavenly Father, help me obey Your calling faithfully and fulfill the purpose for which You have saved me.

    We thank You for all that the resurrection of Jesus means to us: that death could not hold Him, that He lives now to intercede for us in Heaven, and also to be our Friend and Companion in this world. May the gifts of His grace be poured out upon us. May the Holy Spirit fill our hearts and enrich our lives.

    Prepare us for the work and worship of this day. Bless the words we have read from Your holy word. May they become in us divine inspirations, kindling holy thoughts, pure desires, aspirations after holiness, and a love that will make our lives like altars of incense before You.

    Bless our home life on this day of rest. Draw us closer together as a family. May our love become deeper, more tender, and more unselfish as we join in worship. May Your blessing rest upon those who preach Your word and upon all who gather for worship. We pray especially for those who carry Your word to those in need. May they have Your power, and may their ministries be blessed.

He thought he could outwit God. But there is no hiding place from God. He trailed Jonah in his escape ship with a tempest, and when he was about to be thrown into the sea, God prepared a whale to swallow him. This is in itself an act of mercy, for it is physically impossible to be in the belly of the whale for three days without dying. It means that God allowed Jonah to sink to the depth of hopelessness in the valley of the shadow of death, and yet granted him the grace to consciously bow at last, to His demands.* *Deep in the belly of the fish, Jonah at last, cried out for mercy from God. He was mortified at the prospect of drowning at sea, and being eternally separated from God. He remembered God, and began to plead passionately to Him for another chance at life. He admitted that he had forsaken his only source of mercy. Now repentant, Jonah pledged his loyalty to God, and promised to redeem his vows, which presumably, included going anywhere the Lord sent him. Expectedly, God graciously extended His salvation to him, and commanded the whale to vomit out Jonah.* *You must avoid being the architect of your misfortune, and flee from the temptation to reject God's word. You do not need to go through near-death experiences before retracing your steps from rebellion and disobedience. Where you have strayed from God's leading and guidance, and have erected your own devices, or excused your moral failures and weakness in character, you must seek God's mercy, asking for grace to follow Him faithfully, serve Him diligently and obey Him completely. For weeks, they lived in darkness with limited supplies, uncertain whether they would ever see daylight again. Yet they prayed together, encouraged one another, and held on to hope until the day rescue finally came. Their deliverance became an international testimony of perseverance and hope in seemingly impossible circumstances. Jonah's experience was even more extraordinary. Because of his disobedience, he found himself in the depths of the sea and inside a great fish. What seemed like the end of his life became the place where he rediscovered the mercy of God. In the darkest moment of his life, Jonah prayed and God answered. Often, God allows us to reach the depths of helplessness so that we may discover the heights of His grace. *“Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver thee, and thou shall glorify Me.”* ( Psalm 50:15) The book of Jonah chapter 2 teaches us that sincere repentance, steadfast faith and grateful obedience open the door to God's restoring mercy. Jonah discovered that God's mercy is greater than human failure and that no circumstance is beyond His power to redeem. The question for each of us today is: When God graciously delivers and restores us, will we return to our old ways, or will we rise in grateful obedience and faithfully fulfill His calling? Jonah's prayer reminds us that no place is too deep for God's grace. The depths of the sea could not separate Jonah from the presence of the Lord. What appeared to be a prison became a place of prayer, repentance and renewal. Many believers experience seasons when they feel overwhelmed by failure, guilt, disappointment or suffering. Jonah's testimony assures us that God hears the cry of the repentant heart. *1. The Cry of Genuine Repentance* a. From inside the great fish, Jonah turned to God in humble prayer, which is the recognition of his distress. Jonah acknowledged that he was in great trouble and could not save himself. ‭*The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: A broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.* (Psalm 51:17) God hears the humble cry of those who sincerely turn back to Him. Faith clings to God's mercy, rejects false hopes and worships Him even in adversity. b. Jonah recognized that God was still in control, even in the midst of his suffering. Though feeling cast away, Jonah looked again toward God's holy temple in faith. God welcomes sincere repentance. No matter how far we have wandered, His mercy remains available to those who return to Him. *Questions* i. When I fail, do I run from God or return to Him in repentance? ii. Am I willing to acknowledge God's sovereignty even during painful experiences? *2. The Confidence of Growing Faith* a. Although Jonah remained inside the fish, his prayer shifted from despair to confident trust. Jonah remembered the Lord even when hope seemed to disappear. Jonah declared that those who cling to worthless idols forsake God's mercy. *“Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”* (1 John 5:21) b. Jonah promised to offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and fulfill his vows. True faith remembers God's mercy, rejects false securities, and responds with worship and renewed commitment. *Questions* i What "idols" or misplaced confidences might be competing with my trust in God? ii. Do I thank God only after deliverance or do I worship Him while I am still waiting? *3. The Celebration of God's Great Deliverance* a. God answered Jonah's prayer and commanded the fish to release him onto dry land. God delivers His people according to His perfect timing and restores them for His purposes. God restored Jonah, not merely for his comfort, but so he could fulfill the mission to Nineveh. God's deliverance is never an end in itself.   • Charles F. Weigle was an itinerant evangelist and songwriter. One day he returned home after preaching an evangelistic meeting and found a note from his wife. It simply read, “I’m leaving Charlie. I don’t want to live the life you are living. I want to go the other way – to the bright lights.” And to add insult to injury, she had taken their only daughter with her. That night Charlie Weigle wandered the streets alone, finally winding up at the end of the pier at Biscayne Bay, where he contemplated suicide. However, despite all that had happened to him, he vowed to live his life for Jesus.
    Approximately eight months later he met his estranged wife in Los Angeles. She mocked him by telling him of the sins she had committed. Sadly, a couple of years later she lay on her death bed. Her daughter was by her side. Evidently, she was remembering the better life she had lived with Weigle. She turned to her daughter and said, “If you know where your father is, please ask him to pray for me, and see if God can forgive a sinner such as I.”
    About five years later, Charles F. Weigle sat down at the piano thinking about all God had brought him through. The music and words began to flow and he penned the following lyrics:
    Verse 1: “I would love to tell you what I think of Jesus, Since I found in Him a friend so strong and true; I would tell you how He changed my life completely, He did something that no other friend could do.” (Refrain) “No one ever cared for me like Jesus, There’s no other friend so kind as He; No one else could take the sin and darkness from me, O how much He cared for me.”

  • EVIDENCE OF OCCULT OPPRESSION AND SUBJECTION. Part 3 of 3.
    (7) Magic practices. Continued.
    In the neurotic person, for example, a symptom may be only the outward indication of more serious inner disturbances. An alcoholic may be suffering, not merely from a bad habit, but from a serious neurosis. Such nervous afflictions as stuttering may be relieved through hypnosis, only to be replaced by neurotic tensions which affect the entire personality. Migraine headaches relieved through hypnotherapy may be replaced by some form of psychosis.

    In the second place, contrary to popular opinion, there are many instances where criminal or immoral acts have been performed by a person subjected to someone else through hypnosis, which the subjected person would not have done in his conscious state of mind. When one thus surrenders his will to another individual, he then wills to do whatever the person who hypnotized him cares to suggest. He may even perform ridiculous or morally reprehensible acts, if the hypnotist uses the correct techniques of suggestion. For example, a hypnotized individual may be led to disrobe in public if told that he is in the privacy of his own bedroom. From time to time, the newspapers report cases such as the woman who plotted to murder her husband, while under hypnosis by her lover. Women have been abused, crimes committed, and other scandalous acts performed by individuals under hypnosis.

    To make matters worse, cheap literature on the newsstands today popularizes the subject, encouraging young people to practice hypnotism on one another, sometimes with serious mental, emotional, and psychic consequences. The danger of amateur hypnotism is that it can induce psychoneuroses or arouse deep-seated complexes, compulsions, phobias, and other permanent mental and emotional disturbances. Even professional therapists are not always able to cope with the results of hypnotherapy. How much less can a stage hypnotist or novice, who lack the knowledge of the functioning of the mind and emotions!

    When one thus surrenders his will to another, he becomes susceptible to hypnotic suggestion from then on. In fact, he may even become "psychically dependent" upon the other person. This danger is also encountered in telepathy, especially if these practices are carried on repeatedly.

    However, the greatest threat in the hypnotized state of the surrendered will is the fact that the individual is open to the invasion of evil spirits. In order to be hypnotized, he has set aside the one divinely endowed moral and spiritual safeguard against such intrusion: the free and independent exercise of his personal will. In other words, he has at that point forfeited his independent, moral right to say "yes" or "no." So-called medical or therapeutic hypnosis obviously has no more safeguards against this danger than does the amateur hypnotist. Demons have admitted through the lips of those possessed that Satan himself is the power behind the hypnotist! The moral and spiritual implications involved in hypnotism of any sort should be obvious to any concerned person.

    (8.) Spiritism and mediumistic powers.
    In addition to the extrasensory powers of clairvoyance, telepathy, divination, psychometry, and so forth, certain other paranormal or psychic abilities can result from occult subjection. These include self-induced trance states; spirit writing; levitation (the lifting or floating of objects) and table-tipping; astral projection (projection of the spirit or psyche out of the body to another place); spirit knockings or rappings; telekinesis (objects are caused to move mysteriously about the room; musical instruments play as by unseen hands); apports (articles made to appear in locked rooms); materializations (the power to materialize the alleged spirit of the dead, as well as other objects, into visible form); parakinesis (PK, or the ability to control objects by the power of the mind and will); and many other forms of psychic phenomena. Many of these occult and psychic powers are found, not only in those who are practicing mediums, but also in those who have had occult associations.

    (1) Poltergeist activity.

Personal objects disappear or are hidden from the owner, and it is not uncommon for violent and vicious attacks to be made upon the victim himself.

    Incredible as it may seem, few people seem to realize the relationship between this form of oppression and the occult involvement of the victim. As a result, even Christians have been unable to cope properly with it in their attempts to liberate the oppressed. Unless one deals with this oppression from an occult standpoint, there can be no assurance of deliverance and liberation from these psychic or poltergeist attacks.

    Poltergeist activities are sometimes confined to the particular residence or area in which they occur, often as a result of seances, Spiritualist meetings, or some other form of occult activity having been conducted there at some time. Nevertheless, it is the present or past occult involvement of the individual, or within his family, that makes him personally susceptible to these attacks. A certain pastor seen further evidence for this from their counseling experience in that, before liberation, one oppressed individual continued to suffer even after moving to other places of residence.

    (2) Apparitions, specters, monstrous phantasms.
    Appearances of ghostly figures, specters, and demonic creatures, such as headless figures, weird animals, or other hideous creatures (often dismissed as hallucinations), are frequently experienced by those who have had some kind of occult connection. One oppressed victim was almost driven insane when, upon smelling fire and brimstone in the room, turned and saw a filthy, slimy demonic creature. Another was confronted by a headless body. Another encountered a faceless specter upon opening the door. Such things as dwarfs; dark, ugly, leering faces; disembodied hands; serpents; and other fearsome phantasms are sometimes seen. The voice or apparition of a friend or relative of the oppressed individual may appear as a portent, warning of an impending accident or serious illness, or the death of the friend or relative, often at the moment of the tragedy or shortly thereafter. Others under occult oppression may sense the presence of an invisible intelligence or some oppressive, dark creature or power, which lurks about the room, or even follows its victim about. At times, malevolent spirits may actually attack an oppressed individual, choking, biting, throttling, or otherwise molesting the victim. Psychic attacks in the form of persistent nightmares are also common.

    (3) Incubi and succubi experiences.
    This is an attempted assault upon a human by an unclean spirit or demon of lust for the purpose of gratifying its sexual appetites. Women and men alike are known to have suffered such attempts at sexual molestation, as well as actual attacks. Both history and a certain pastor’s counseling experience confirm the reality of such experiences. II Peter 2:4, and Jude 6-7, taken literally, provide adequate Scriptural basis for the reality of such bizarre occurrences.

    C. Spiritual Subjection and Oppression.
    Occult involvement invariably affects one spiritually, frequently causing serious damage to one's spiritual life and faith. The spiritual effects and influence of the powers of darkness are readily apparent in the symptoms which follow, not all of which would necessarily be found in any one individual, nor to the same degree. Often there is progressive spiritual deterioration, and disintegration in the area of faith, unless deliverance is effected. Evil influences continue their destructive work even in the lives of Christians. This is true even if the occult participation was insignificant; regardless of how far in the past it took place; and even if it took place before the individual became a Christian.

    1. Indifference to spiritual things.
    Spiritual deterioration is seen in a noticeable indifference to the Word of God, prayer, worship, and spiritual matters in general. Often this happens against the individual's own will, and he has little success in overcoming this state, though he may try repeatedly to reverse his increasing spiritual apathy.

    2. Serious problems concerning doubt and unbelief.
    Extreme and persistent doubts concerning the teachings of Scripture, especially the supernatural, or difficulty in exercising faith, are clear evidence of spiritual deterioration as a result of occult associations. Often these individuals seem to be powerless to resist the temptation to doubt, waver, question, and distrust God, His promises, and His ministers. At times they feel almost overwhelmed by skepticism, suspicion, incredulity, disbelief, indecision, and other misgivings.

    3. Religious aberrations.
    Religious delusions, heresies, and errors, ranging from agnosticism to affirming the doctrines of Spiritualism, Modernism, New Age religion, or other religious cults, indicate occult subjection. Other aberrations include pious self-righteousness, spiritual pride, and hypocrisy. Many religious extremes, such as abnormal aversion to certain foods (which the individual is well prepared to justify on personal, religious, or medical grounds), serious deviations from Scripture in doctrine or practice, asceticism, and extreme antagonism toward other religious bodies or Christian groups, are also found.

    4. Inability to receive the Holy Spirit.
    Frequently, those with occult associations find a spiritual barrier when they wish to receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit, although some have earnestly desired and sought the experience for years. Liberation from occult powers, which act as hindrances, is the only solution we have found.

    Resistance.
    A very significant indication of the spiritual effect upon some who have had occult involvement is their resistance to the teaching concerning the reality of occult subjection and oppression, and their indifference to the dangers involved. This is one of the characteristic marks of occult delusion and enslavement in some who have been guilty of occult sins. Their hostile reaction is often the work of a spirit of pride which prevents them from admitting their gullibility, sin, and delusion. It may be motivated by their reluctance to sever occult connections. The powers of darkness struggle against being discovered and removed from their position of influence and control. The very resistance itself, in view of the plain teachings of Scripture condemning these practices, is evidence enough of occult subjection in such individuals.

    This resistance is often expressed as unwillingness on the part of the oppressed individual to accept the fact that a Christian can be oppressed by Satan-even though this individual is usually suffering such oppression at the time! Of course, he blames his problems, for which he is seeking help, on some other source or on causes unknown. Experience has shown that, unless the oppressed or subjected person recognizes and admits the source of resistance to the fact of occult oppression and subjection, and unless he personally resists in faith the powers of darkness at this point, deliverance from this condition is impossible.

    6. Occult bondage and opposition to God.
    Where spiritual damage is severe, the person may be in such a state of bondage to the powers of darkness that severe forms of occult subjection are observed:
    . Inability to believe on or confess Christ, even where there is a desire to believe;
    . Difficulty in praying or reading the Word of God, often accompanied by extreme drowsiness or an inability to concentrate;
    .Too easily being distracted during the preaching or teaching of the Scriptures, or difficulty understanding them;
    . Inability to acknowledge the fact of the efficacy of the blood Atonement, or the Deity of Christ;
    . Unclean thoughts and sexual images entering the mind when trying to enter into a time of private devotions or prayer;
    . Dependence upon, or enslavement to, various forms of occultism.
    . Opposition to God, as seen in the following characteristics, is unmistakable evidence of demon possession:
    . Blasphemous thoughts against God, Christ, and the Trinity;
    . Opposition to the work of the Holy Spirit; Aversion to all references to the blood of Christ or His Deity;
    . Scorn, mockery, and ridicule toward the Bible, preaching, believers, Christianity, or divine and holy things in general.

    Such persons often manifest violent raging, cursing, and blasphemous opposition against all attempts at deliverance-even when this liberation is being sought by the subjected individual himself! Usually, however, their bondage to occultism is greater than their will power or desire for deliverance from such enslavement.

    D. Physical Oppression.
    Certain physical symptoms indicate the presence and activity of demonic powers. These are related to outward behavior, bodily appearance, and to the physical condition. Of course, the mere presence of just one of these symptoms is not conclusive proof of demonic oppression and activity, but could be the result of some other cause. Inexperienced individuals need to be warned against the temptation to evaluate the spiritual state of others on the basis of these symptoms alone.

    1. Speech and behavioral abnormalities.
    The oppressed individual will frequently manifest one or more of the following symptoms, and usually in a noticeably abnormal manner: excessive talkativeness; unusual loudness of tone and voice; hysterical laughter; persistent restlessness and uneasiness; silliness; giddiness; unusually foolish talk and behavior; incongruity of actions; muttering to oneself; incoherence in speech and thought; compulsive shouting or screaming when provoked; the absence of certain normal reflexes, or the exaggeration of others; peculiar postures (e.g ., unrelaxed, abnormally rigid and ramrod straight; or exactly the opposite state of lethargic, sluggish droopiness); deep sighing, denoting despondency or feelings of self pity; shunning or withdrawal from public scrutiny; odd, annoyingly repetitious eccentricities of speech.

    In actual cases of demon possession, especially when the evil spirits in the individual feel threatened with exposure or expulsion, or when they find themselves in the presence of the power of the blood and the Name of Jesus, more violent physical manifestations are often seen, such as: foaming at the mouth; retching; screaming; cursing, blasphemy; raging against Christianity; physical resistance; threatened or attempted violence; and at times, convulsions, with pains and cramps, or a state of catalepsy.

    Often at such times spirits will speak through the possessed victim. An intelligence is manifested that does not belong to the individual himself. Sometimes a possessed individual can understand or speak a foreign language which he has not studied (not to be confused with Biblical tongues, since in demon possession it is the demon, who knows the language, speaking through the person). Frequently, there is knowledge of hidden facts, a prognostication of future events, a display of physical feats of supernormal strength, or other supernatural phenomena.

    2. Abnormal facial characteristics.
    The face of an oppressed individual is often contorted by fear, chronic doubts, incredulity, or anxiety; his countenance maybe strained, uneasy, or tormented. Such individuals seldom smile, and have no joy in their conversation or life. They commonly wear a morbid expression, and often think of suicide.

    Others display a defiant, wicked, scowling, perverse, dark or sullen appearance. At times the complexion is also affected, being dark and somber, or pallid and corpse-like. Other extremes of facial expression are a stereotyped, frozen smile or grimace, or an impassive, stoical absence of expression.

    Some have abnormally bright and protruding eyes; others, a glazed, trance-like, or hunted, animal-like stare. In others there is a wicked, defiant glare, or a demonic leering in the eyes.

    3. Abnormal physical ailments.
    Chronic, persistent physical ailments, diseases, or pains that do not respond to prayer or treatment of any kind, but which seem to linger on and on, may indicate occult oppression. Mere prayer for healing is insufficient, since one must deal with the occult cause of the affliction, not just the physical effect. In these cases, deliverance from occult bondage is a crucial step in receiving liberation.

    E. Material, Domestic, and Social Forms of Oppression.
    Most people are unaware of the far-reaching effects of occult participation. Occult associations can also result in oppression which affects the lives of others. It may, for example, produce serious marital problems, often culminating in divorce. One person traced the beginning of marital strife and incompatibility to the day following a visit to a seance. Discord between parents and children; disputes with neighbors; friction and strife between business associates or others; and church divisions and irreconcilable schisms can result.

    This form of oppression is the operation of divisive and factious spirits whose primary objective is to work in the affairs of men to divide, disrupt, confuse, deceive, distract, disturb, perplex, and disorganize. Their sole aim is in every way to destroy unity, harmony, and peace; to cause as much affliction, sorrow, agony, anguish, grief, misery, misfortune, privation, distrust, suspicion, doubt, anxiety, and confusion as possible in the daily circumstances of life. Persistent financial distress, material loss, and subjection to poverty, need, scarcity, and other material privations, can also result from occult involvement.

    Deliverance from all forms of oppression and subjection resulting from occult involvement can come only in one way, and it is to this that we now turn to in our next studies. Edited. Shared.

When one thus surrenders his will to another individual, he then wills to do whatever the person who hypnotized him cares to suggest. He may even perform ridiculous or morally reprehensible acts, if the hypnotist uses the correct techniques of suggestion. For example, a hypnotized individual may be led to disrobe in public if told that he is in the privacy of his own bedroom. From time to time, the newspapers report cases such as the woman who plotted to murder her husband, while under hypnosis by her lover. Women have been abused, crimes committed, and other scandalous acts performed by individuals under hypnosis. To make matters worse, cheap literature on the newsstands today popularizes the subject, encouraging young people to practice hypnotism on one another, sometimes with serious mental, emotional, and psychic consequences. The danger of amateur hypnotism is that it can induce psychoneuroses or arouse deep-seated complexes, compulsions, phobias, and other permanent mental and emotional disturbances. Even professional therapists are not always able to cope with the results of hypnotherapy. How much less can a stage hypnotist or novice, who lack the knowledge of the functioning of the mind and emotions! When one thus surrenders his will to another, he becomes susceptible to hypnotic suggestion from then on. In fact, he may even become "psychically dependent" upon the other person. This danger is also encountered in telepathy, especially if these practices are carried on repeatedly. However, the greatest threat in the hypnotized state of the surrendered will is the fact that the individual is open to the invasion of evil spirits. In order to be hypnotized, he has set aside the one divinely endowed moral and spiritual safeguard against such intrusion: the free and independent exercise of his personal will. In other words, he has at that point forfeited his independent, moral right to say "yes" or "no." So-called medical or therapeutic hypnosis obviously has no more safeguards against this danger than does the amateur hypnotist. Demons have admitted through the lips of those possessed that Satan himself is the power behind the hypnotist! The moral and spiritual implications involved in hypnotism of any sort should be obvious to any concerned person. (8.) Spiritism and mediumistic powers. In addition to the extrasensory powers of clairvoyance, telepathy, divination, psychometry, and so forth, certain other paranormal or psychic abilities can result from occult subjection. These include self-induced trance states; spirit writing; levitation (the lifting or floating of objects) and table-tipping; astral projection (projection of the spirit or psyche out of the body to another place); spirit knockings or rappings; telekinesis (objects are caused to move mysteriously about the room; musical instruments play as by unseen hands); apports (articles made to appear in locked rooms); materializations (the power to materialize the alleged spirit of the dead, as well as other objects, into visible form); parakinesis (PK, or the ability to control objects by the power of the mind and will); and many other forms of psychic phenomena. Certain physical symptoms indicate the presence and activity of demonic powers. These are related to outward behavior, bodily appearance, and to the physical condition. Of course, the mere presence of just one of these symptoms is not conclusive proof of demonic oppression and activity, but could be the result of some other cause. Inexperienced individuals need to be warned against the temptation to evaluate the spiritual state of others on the basis of these symptoms alone. 1. Speech and behavioral abnormalities. The oppressed individual will frequently manifest one or more of the following symptoms, and usually in a noticeably abnormal manner: excessive talkativeness; unusual loudness of tone and voice; hysterical laughter; persistent restlessness and uneasiness; silliness; giddiness; unusually foolish talk and behavior; incongruity of actions; muttering to oneself; incoherence in speech and thought; compulsive shouting or screaming when provoked; the absence of certain normal reflexes, or the exaggeration of others; peculiar postures (e.g ., unrelaxed, abnormally rigid and ramrod straight; or exactly the opposite state of lethargic, sluggish droopiness); deep sighing, denoting despondency or feelings of self pity; shunning or withdrawal from public scrutiny; odd, annoyingly repetitious eccentricities of speech. In actual cases of demon possession, especially when the evil spirits in the individual feel threatened with exposure or expulsion, or when they find themselves in the presence of the power of the blood and the Name of Jesus, more violent physical manifestations are often seen, such as: foaming at the mouth; retching; screaming; cursing, blasphemy; raging against Christianity; physical resistance; threatened or attempted violence; and at times, convulsions, with pains and cramps, or a state of catalepsy. Often at such times spirits will speak through the possessed victim. An intelligence is manifested that does not belong to the individual himself. Sometimes a possessed individual can understand or speak a foreign language which he has not studied (not to be confused with Biblical tongues, since in demon possession it is the demon, who knows the language, speaking through the person). Frequently, there is knowledge of hidden facts, a prognostication of future events, a display of physical feats of supernormal strength, or other supernatural phenomena. 2. Abnormal facial characteristics. The face of an oppressed individual is often contorted by fear, chronic doubts, incredulity, or anxiety; his countenance maybe strained, uneasy, or tormented. Such individuals seldom smile, and have no joy in their conversation or life. They commonly wear a morbid expression, and often think of suicide. Others display a defiant, wicked, scowling, perverse, dark or sullen appearance. At times the complexion is also affected, being dark and somber, or pallid and corpse-like. Other extremes of facial expression are a stereotyped, frozen smile or grimace, or an impassive, stoical absence of expression. Some have abnormally bright and protruding eyes; others, a glazed, trance-like, or hunted, animal-like stare. In others there is a wicked, defiant glare, or a demonic leering in the eyes. 3. Abnormal physical ailments. Chronic, persistent physical ailments, diseases, or pains that do not respond to prayer or treatment of any kind, but which seem to linger on and on, may indicate occult oppression. Mere prayer for healing is insufficient, since one must deal with the occult cause of the affliction, not just the physical effect. In these cases, deliverance from occult bondage is a crucial step in receiving liberation. E. Material, Domestic, and Social Forms of Oppression. Most people are unaware of the far-reaching effects of occult participation. Occult associations can also result in oppression which affects the lives of others. It may, for example, produce serious marital problems, often culminating in divorce. One person traced the beginning of marital strife and incompatibility to the day following a visit to a seance. Discord between parents and children; disputes with neighbors; friction and strife between business associates or others; and church divisions and irreconcilable schisms can result. This form of oppression is the operation of divisive and factious spirits whose primary objective is to work in the affairs of men to divide, disrupt, confuse, deceive, distract, disturb, perplex, and disorganize. Their sole aim is in every way to destroy unity, harmony, and peace; to cause as much affliction, sorrow, agony, anguish, grief, misery, misfortune, privation, distrust, suspicion, doubt, anxiety, and confusion as possible in the daily circumstances of life. Persistent financial distress, material loss, and subjection to poverty, need, scarcity, and other material privations, can also result from occult involvement. Deliverance from all forms of oppression and subjection resulting from occult involvement can come only in one way, and it is to this that we now turn to in our next studies. Edited. Shared.     BIBLE READING: ACTS 16:19-34
    19 And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers,

    20 And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,

    21 And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.

    22 And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them.

    23 And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:

    24 Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

    25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

    26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.

    MESSAGE:
    The first time I visited the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison was in 1975. I went there with an elderly pastor, and we saw a young man playing the piano and dancing joyfully. I asked the elderly pastor whether the young man was about to be released, and he responded that the man didn't have any hope of being released because he was serving a life sentence. I then asked the pastor why the young man was so joyful despite his circumstances, and he replied that the man was joyful because he had met Jesus Christ while in prison.

    Beloved, if you are going through a bad situation, I want you to know that no matter how bad it is, you have a reason to rejoice as long as you have Jesus. Today's memory verse says that Christ in you is the hope of glory. When Christ is in a fellow, no matter what he or she is facing, such a fellow has hope for a glorious future.

    A songwriter once wrote a song that says, "I am glad I belong to Jesus." Another songwriter wrote, "Because He lives, I can face tomorrow." These should be your declarations as a believer, even when the enemy knocks you down. Proverbs 24:16 says that the righteous may fall seven times, but they will surely rise again. This means that negative situations cannot keep you down permanently. When the devil arranged for Jesus' crucifixion and death, he thought he had won. However, (1 Corinthians 2:8) tells us that if the princes of this world had known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. Had they known that Jesus' death would be their utter destruction, they would have tried to prevent Him from dying. In today's Bible reading, the devil thought he had succeeded in shutting Paul and Silas up by getting them arrested. He didn't know that God needed them to be in prison so they could show the jailer and his household the way to salvation. The devil's attempts to make you fall will only lead to God being glorified in your life.

    Child of God, are you going through a tough and uncertain situation? Rejoice because Christ in you is your hope of glory. Don't despair or be discouraged. Rest assured that whatever you are passing through will give God a platform to announce His glory in your life, so long as you remain in Christ. May Christ indeed reveal His glory in your life, in Jesus' name.

    KEY POINT:
    As long as you have Christ in you, you have every reason to rejoice.

    ✓Father, thank You for taking away the sorrows of sin and eternal damnation in hell, and replacing it with eternal joy of righteousness and everlasting life in You.

    ‎✓Lord Jesus, You are the hope of the hopeless, thank You because in every situation around me, my hope is not lost because I have You in my life.

    ✓Father, thank You for the glorious future ahead of me, thank You because by Your mercy I will fulfill Your purpose for my life.
