• Greater Works Through the Risen Savior

A Devotional Bible Study Reflecting on John 14:12

“Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever believes in Me will also do the works that I am doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” — John 14:12

The words of Jesus in John 14:12 offer a remarkable promise, but they also invite careful understanding. What could it mean for ordinary believers to do the works of Jesus, and even greater things? The answer begins with the setting in which He spoke. Jesus was preparing His disciples for His departure. The cross stood before Him, and the disciples were approaching a season of confusion and grief. Into their uncertainty, He spoke assurance. His departure would not end His work in the world. Through His death, resurrection, and return to the Father, a new chapter of that work would begin.

John 14 opens with Jesus urging His disciples not to let their hearts be troubled. Their confidence was to rest in God and in Him. He promised a place in His Father’s house and declared Himself the way, the truth, and the life. These assurances establish the foundation for verse 12. The promise of greater works belongs within a larger revelation of who Jesus is and what He accomplishes. It cannot be separated from His unique relationship with the Father, His saving mission, or the disciples’ dependence on Him.

Immediately before this promise, Jesus explains that His words and works reveal the Father. When Philip asks to see the Father, Jesus directs him to what has already been made known through His presence among them. His compassion, truth, authority, and holiness disclose the character of God. Jesus is not merely an example of religious devotion. He is the Son who makes the Father known. Therefore, when He promises that believers will share in His works, He is inviting them into a mission whose purpose is to reveal God’s goodness and draw people to faith.

The opening words, “Truly, truly,” emphasize the certainty and weight of the promise. Jesus knows the weakness of those listening. He knows that fear will scatter them and that Peter will deny Him. Nevertheless, He speaks of a future in which His work continues through believing people. Their coming failure will not have the final word. His grace will restore them, and His power will equip them. Christian service begins here: with confidence in the faithfulness of Christ, rather than confidence in the strength of His servants.

The phrase “whoever believes in Me” deserves close attention. Jesus does not describe a privileged spiritual class whose exceptional ability qualifies them for usefulness. Faith in Him is the defining relationship. This faith involves more than agreeing that certain statements about Jesus are true. It means entrusting oneself to Him, receiving His words, and depending on His saving authority. Believers do not become independent sources of divine power. They become people through whom the living Christ works. The emphasis falls on the One trusted, rather than on the believer’s ability to produce extraordinary results.

This guards against a damaging misunderstanding. John 14:12 should never become a weapon used to shame Christians who suffer, serve quietly, or do not witness dramatic miracles. Jesus does not teach that every believer will reproduce every event of His earthly ministry. Nor does He provide a method for measuring faith by visible success. Throughout Scripture, faithful servants experience both remarkable deliverance and prolonged hardship. The promise calls believers to expect Christ’s continuing activity, while leaving the form, timing, and outcome of that activity in His wise hands.

The works of Jesus included unmistakable signs of divine authority. He healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, fed the hungry, and raised the dead. Yet His works also included teaching truth, welcoming the outcast, exposing hypocrisy, and showing mercy to people burdened by sin. His signs were never empty displays. They pointed beyond themselves to His identity and the life available through Him. To participate in His works is therefore to serve His revealing and redeeming purpose. Christian ministry loses its direction whenever fascination with power overshadows love for people or faithfulness to the gospel.

The expression “greater things” has been understood in different ways by Christians, but Jesus supplies the essential clue: “because I am going to the Father.” The greatness of these works is connected to His departure and exaltation. It does not mean that His followers become greater than their Lord, improve upon His character, or accomplish a redemption more complete than His. His saving work is unique and sufficient. Rather, the promise points toward what becomes possible through His completed mission and the new era that follows His return to the Father.

During His earthly ministry, Jesus carried out His work within a particular geographical setting. After His resurrection and ascension, the message of His victory would spread through His witnesses to many peoples and nations. People who had never seen Him physically would come to know Him through the gospel. The church’s mission would extend across languages, cultures, and generations. In this expanding reach, believers would participate in works whose scope exceeded what the disciples had witnessed during Jesus’ earthly ministry. The greatness would display His triumph, not their superiority.

There is also a profound connection between these works and the fuller announcement of salvation after the resurrection. The disciples would proclaim a crucified and risen Savior whose victory had now been accomplished. They would announce forgiveness on the basis of His finished work and call people into the life of His kingdom. At Pentecost, the Spirit empowered their witness, and many received the message. The disciples who had once hidden in fear became public witnesses to the risen Lord. Such transformation demonstrates that the continuing mission depended on God’s action, not a sudden discovery of human strength.

Jesus’ return to the Father must therefore be understood as more than His absence from the earth. Through the cross, resurrection, and ascension, He accomplishes the mission for which He came and takes His place in heavenly glory. He remains actively involved with His people. The church does not inherit an unfinished task from a powerless or distant teacher. It serves a risen Lord who reigns and supplies what His mission requires. Christian hope rests in the reality that Jesus lives, and Christian service proceeds under His present authority.

Later in John 14, Jesus promises the Holy Spirit, the Helper who will remain with His disciples. This promise helps explain how His work will continue through them. They will not be left as orphans, forced to sustain the mission by memory and determination alone. God will dwell with them and in them through His Spirit. The same disciples who could not secure their own courage would receive divine help. Every generation of believers needs this reminder: organization, training, and effort have value, but none can replace the presence and power of the Holy Spirit.

The verses immediately following John 14:12 also connect the promise with prayer in Jesus’ name. His people are to ask, and He will act so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. Praying in His name means approaching God through Him and seeking what accords with His character and purposes. It is not a phrase added to the end of a request to guarantee a preferred result. Prayer brings Christian service into dependence on Christ. It teaches the church to seek His will, receive His provision, and give Him the glory.

The Father’s glory provides an essential test of how this passage is applied. If the pursuit of greater works produces pride, competition, manipulation, or a hunger for recognition, something has gone wrong. Jesus’ works directed attention to the Father. Works carried out in His name should bear that same direction. The servant who becomes more concerned with appearing powerful than with loving faithfully has lost sight of the promise’s purpose. Spiritual usefulness grows alongside humility because every lasting good comes through grace.

Practical obedience begins in the circumstances already before us. A believer may long for a remarkable opportunity while overlooking a neighbor who needs compassion, a family member who needs patient listening, or a person who needs to hear the gospel clearly. Sharing in Christ’s mission includes speaking truth with gentleness, feeding those in need, welcoming those who feel excluded, and extending forgiveness. These actions should not be casually equated with every dimension of the “greater works” promise, but they express the character of the Savior whose mission His people serve.

The promise also encourages courage in bearing witness. Many Christians feel inadequate to speak about Jesus because they lack advanced education or fear difficult questions. Learning matters, and honesty about the limits of one’s understanding is necessary. Yet the effectiveness of Christian witness does not finally depend on intellectual brilliance. A clear explanation of Christ’s death and resurrection, offered with humility and love, can become the means through which someone encounters the gospel. Believers are called to speak faithfully and trust God with the response.

At the same time, faithfulness requires patience. The work of God often unfolds in ways that are hidden from immediate observation. A conversation may bear fruit years later. A congregation may labor through a difficult season without seeing obvious growth. A parent may continue praying while a child remains distant from faith. John 14:12 does not authorize predictions about when desired changes must occur. It gives confidence that Jesus’ departure has not rendered His people helpless. They serve within a mission sustained by His life and directed by His wisdom.

This passage also challenges an overly individualistic understanding of Christian service. Although the promise includes “whoever believes,” the continuing story of the church reveals a people serving together through varied gifts. Some teach, some encourage, some give generously, and some care for those in distress. No single believer embodies the whole ministry of the church. The worldwide reach of Christ’s work involves countless acts of obedience woven together by the Spirit. Recognizing this frees believers from comparison and encourages them to value the contributions of others.

The character of Jesus must remain inseparable from the work done in His name. In John 13, He washes His disciples’ feet and commands them to love one another. These actions frame the farewell teaching that includes John 14:12. The promise of greater works emerges from the same Lord who kneels with a towel. Therefore, greatness in His service cannot be understood merely in terms of crowds, influence, or dramatic events. Any claim to spiritual power must be examined alongside humility, truthfulness, sacrificial love, and willingness to serve without applause.

For the church today, this means approaching ministry with both expectation and surrender. Expectation trusts that Christ can save, restore, heal, and open doors that human strength cannot open. Surrender refuses to dictate how He must act. Believers may pray boldly for healing while caring faithfully for those whose illness continues. They may ask for widespread awakening while patiently discipling a few people. They may pursue new opportunities while remaining obedient in ordinary responsibilities. Faith is active and hopeful, yet it remains submitted to the Lord who knows the whole purpose of His work.

John 14:12 ultimately directs attention back to Jesus. The promise begins with belief in Him and rests on His return to the Father. Its fulfillment depends on His victory, His Spirit, and His continuing action among His people. The church’s calling is to remain close to Him, receive His word, pray in His name, and obey His commands. The Savior who spoke these words has not abandoned His mission. Through the people He redeems and empowers, His gospel continues to reach the world, His compassion continues to touch wounded lives, and His Father continues to receive glory.

  • Hello family!
I am glad to share with you the Word of the Living God and His unending power!
    THE LOVE OF GOD
    Part One
Greetings to you, beloved in Christ.
To the saints of God and to you as well, souls that will believe in the name of His Son, may grace and peace from the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
    Introduction
Love is a word that is spoken often, but rarely understood. We look for it in relationships, we work for it, and we ask for it. But God's love does not work like ours. It does not wait for us to be worthy, to ask, or to fix ourselves before we are looked upon. This sermon drives us to the Love of Godβ€”a love that came down into a broken, bound world as a gift: Jesus Christ. As you read, ask yourself: Have I truly received this gift, or am I still trying to earn what was already given?
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
    John 3:16
God loved the world and demonstrated His love by giving the world His only begotten Son. Here we are stirred up as we see the manifestation of love by God.
In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
    1 John 4:9-10
He gave His only begotten Son as a gift to the world. A gift is something you are given without seeking or asking for it; you are given it without having done anything to deserve it. This Son is a gift given to the world.
The world did not ask for the Son.
This gift is not many; it is one.
    The World Is Not Righteous
And the world is where Satan dwells. The world is in bondage under the Devil.
We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.
    1 John 5:19
The world is a symbol of Satan's kingdom. The world = unsaved people.
The world faces great judgment (Acts 17:30-31) because it has sinned, it is not righteous, and its deeds are corrupt.
So into that very world came the love of God, manifested through the coming of His Son as the Messiah, the Lord and Savior of the world, so that the world might be saved through Him.
    Jesus Is the Savior
And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.
    Matthew 1:21
    This Son is named Jesus.
He alone can save and deliver people from sin.
And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Jesus answered them, β€œMost assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”
    John 8:32, 34-36
God cares for His people; He will not leave their souls in affliction under the yoke of sin.
He has brought forth a Deliverer, His Son, so that people may be set free through Him.
Faith (receiving the gift) rescues from death because the whole world lay in death.
    Therefore, receiving Him brings salvation.
No true love is found outside of God.
This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.
    1 Timothy 1:15
Salvation is not sought out; it comes. And the world cannot justify itself; it failed to save itself.
This word is being preached to you so that you may repent toward God and be baptized in the name of Jesus, so that your sins may be forgiven.
    What We Have Learned
We have learned that: God's love cannot be bought; it is given freely. The world is broken, in slavery to sin, and facing judgment. But God sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, as a free gift to the world so that it might be saved through Him.
    1. Love Was Demonstrated
God did not just talk about love. He gave Jesus. A gift is neither begged for nor earned.
    2. The World Is Sick
It is in bondage; there is no righteousness in it. Our religion, money, or power cannot save us.
    3. Jesus Sets Free
He came to save and to liberate. Freedom comes through faith in the name of Jesus.
    4. You Are Called by God
Turn to God and receive Christ. True love and freedom are found in Him alone.
GOD HAS MERCY AND COMPASSION ON HIS PEOPLE
The living God did not want to leave His people in danger and suffering under oppression due to sin.
People carry heavy spiritual burdens and are spiritually sick because of a great disease called sin.
When the soul is sick it has no peace; it is in torment and far from the living God.
Look and see that you are dying because of sin.
Sin will separate you from God forever. (Romans 6:23)
From long ago, the world has been full of specialized doctors who treat at the highest level, but they treat the physical body and flesh when struck by disease.
Even if a virus attacks the cause of illness in the body, immediate action is taken to prevent it, because it will lead to the destruction of that body.
Now, while many healers exist, there is one disease that cannot be cured by earthly doctors.
This disease attacks the soul; no doctor on earth has ever healed the soul from ancient times until today.
This disease has put your soul in danger, and you face complete, spiritual deathβ€”which is eternal separation from God.
This disease is sin (Satan) within you.
Now God, full of mercy, grace, and love, saw that without a doctor under heaven, these souls would die.
So were His people (including you who are reading) to perish because of this disease called sin, which is the lack of God's righteousness?
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
    Romans 3:23
People under heaven across the world have religions, and you belong to one as well. When the day comes, people go to worship and serve in religions, but these have failed to save the sinning soul from this disease called sin.
Now in His plan, as God looked upon the world and its wickedness, I see God having great mercy and compassion on the people. He gives His only begotten Son to be a Redeemer and Savior to His people in the world.
His Son, a male child, is the qualified Doctor who is able to cure this disease, which is to destroy sin. This means He is the rightful Messiah.
And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.
    Matthew 1:21
Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
    Acts 4:12
Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through Jesus forgiveness of sins is preached to you; and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.
    Acts 13:38-39
Through this Jesus is where the salvation of your soul is found, and righteousness comes to you.
This righteousness is from God and comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.
    Romans 3:22
Now to all you sick sinners, including yourself, what must be done?
Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
    Romans 3:24-26
The cup of God's wrath is poured out upon the earth (those whose souls are sick).
The world is facing great punishment.
Wrath is coming upon the world because of its disease, because it has not believed in the name of His Son.
The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand. He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.
    John 3:35-36
So what should you do now having heard from the God of love?
Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, β€œMen and brethren, what shall we do?” Then Peter said to them, β€œRepent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
    Acts 2:37-38

JESUS CHRIST GOSPEL ACADEMY - Teaching and learning True God
Come, let us learn Christ together!
Hello family! I am glad to share with you the Word of the Living God and His unending power! THE LOVE OF GOD Part One Greetings to you, beloved in Christ. To the saints of God and to you as well, souls that will believe in the name of His Son, may grace and peace from the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Introduction Love is a word that is spoken often, but rarely understood. John 3:16 God loved the world and demonstrated His love by giving the world His only begotten Son. Here we are stirred up as we see the manifestation of love by God. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1 John 4:9-10 He gave His only begotten Son as a gift to the world.
