  • Whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved. But how shall they call on Him in whom they’ve not believed? Or believe in Him of whom they have not heard? Or hear without a preacher?’ (Romans 10:13). The evangelist is the preacher, the witness, the testimony to the power of God. As an evangelist I believe in telling everybody about Jesus because I believe in Him, He’s real! He’s alive! There is nobody like Him in all the world! And He’s going to come back to the earth very soon! Isn’t He wonderful! Real believers should be the happiest people on earth! Religion gives you complicated rules which can put you in bondage, but faith in Christ sets you free from the law, and the power of sin and death.

  • Lev.22:3
“Say unto them, Whosoever he be of all your seed among your generations, that goeth unto the holy things, which the children of Israel hallow unto the LORD, having his uncleanness upon him, that soul shall be cut off from my presence: I am the LORD.”

Food For Thought: The subject of holiness is one that God is never tired of emphasizing like we can see throughout the book of Leviticus. Whether it is the priest or the people, anyone that would draw near to God must be holy.

This emphasis bears repetition for the simple reason that God is holy and He is not willing to (and does not) compromise that holiness for anyone. It is like when someone wants to be your friend and is making effort to draw closer to you: if there are things that you are sensitive about and cannot tolerate from those that you call your close friends, wisdom demands that you let them know on time. If they cannot respect your sensibilities concerning such things, then there is no need to seek to be your close friends.

In the same way, God is very protective of His holiness and anyone who desires to draw close to Him must embrace the culture of holiness.
Fortunately for us in the New Testament, holiness is not something we should struggle with unlike in the Old Testament. In the Old Testament, they tried to serve God with their unregenerate nature. It is like trying to chew a piece of meat when you have toothache. It’s tough.
But when a person becomes born again, he or she receives a new nature and that nature is the very nature of God which is holy by itself.
Consider these scriptures for instance: “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2Co 5:17 “That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.” Eph.4:22-24 All that is required of us to walk in the practicality of holiness is to put it on – just like you wear a dress.
This we do by yielding to the help of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us as well as feeding regularly on God’s word.

Today's Practical: Apart from yielding to the help of the Holy Spirit and feeding on God’s word regularly, identify at least two other things we must regularly do in order to put on the new man and walk in the practicality of holiness.

  • Today’s Reading: Acts 5:1-42 Meditational verse(s) for Today: (Acts 5:27-33) “And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them, Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us. Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them. ”
Food For Thought: Among other things, this chapter presents us with two indispensable tools that we as believers need if we are going to make meaningful impact with preaching the gospel.
One is boldness and the other is the manifested power of God. It is not one without the other – we need both. Boldness to proclaim the gospel without the accompanying power is a little more than an empty bravado and noise. The adversaries will mock, sabotage, and frustrate such efforts any time. On the other hand, power without boldness is like a loaded gun without a shooter or a sharp sword without a wielder – it will do no damage to the adversary. What provokes and sustains the boldness to preach the gospel in a believer, is the awareness and appreciation of the truth on which it rests and the good it is capable of bringing to men.
The apostles witnessed the cruelty with which the Lord Jesus Christ was punished and mercilessly crucified.
They saw the adversaries rejoicing that they had succeeded in killing Him at last. But to the enemies’ dismay, Jesus resurrected from the dead sealing their defeat and confirming all the claims He made that He alone is the Saviour of lost humanity. Possessed with such evidence and truth, fear and intimidation could not hold them down.
They knew these same adversaries had done their worst against the Lord Jesus and failed woefully. So, for the disciples, it was a payback time against the adversaries. As a result, they were filled with fearlessness and boldness to preach the gospel.

As believers, to acquire the needed boldness and fearlessness to preach the gospel, we must spend time meditating on the huge price the Lord Jesus had to pay for our salvation, the torture, sufferings, and death He went through, and the salvation, deliverance, and eternal hope that preaching the gospel will bring to unsaved souls all around us.
Then we need the power. The power to back up the gospel comes by the Holy Spirit (Luke 24:49, Acts 1:8). Unfortunately, this is the place where many believers struggle, for even though they are filled or baptized with the Holy Spirit, the power hardly manifests.
The big question is, where are we missing it? We must seek God’s face with fervent desperation until He helps us out of this situation because without the manifestation of the power, we can’t meaningfully advance the gospel He told us to preach in order to reach and save the souls for whom He died.

Today's Practical: Pray that God would open your eyes to see what you as a believer must do, (together with the grace to do it), in other for the power of the Holy Spirit to begin to manifest in and through your life. Pray the same for the Body of Christ worldwide.

Food For Thought: Last night when I woke up to pray, the Lord began to speak to me about the need for His people to get ready for His second coming. My eyes were opened to several truths in the word of God regarding what we must do to be ready. It is a serious matter never to be taken casually or for granted. Well, that is not the focus of my commentary today but it is related.
In this chapter, the apostle Paul tells us something that we need to pay close attention to. He says: “…. that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed….”

  • Acts 16:23-26) “And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.
And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed. .”

Food For Thought: How far we go with God has everything to do with how much we are prepared to suffer for His name’s sake. A lot of believers want to be heavily anointed and mightily used by God for His glory but fail to answer the question:

how much are you prepared to suffer for Him? The power and glory that God puts on a man will attract troubles, persecutions, and sufferings. These are never sent from God but rather, they are part of the enemy’s response and attempt to sabotage that man. You can’t pray them off – they will come in one way or the other. So, where a believer is not ready to take any punches from the adversary, he is not ready for the power of God even though he may be praying for it. What did Paul and Silas do to be mercilessly beaten and thrown into jail? It was because Paul manifested his Godgiven authority to cast out the spirit of divination from a servant of the devil. But see how they responded in that situation that followed.
With their feet in stocks, their backs bleeding from the floggings they received, and their stomach hungry, they could still pray and praise God. That is the kind of situation that could have made a lot of believers to murmur, complain, and be offended at God for allowing them to get into such a situation.

  • Sometimes when we pray, it is as if God is not hearing or that He is not doing anything about our prayers but that is never the case.

Those believers that gathered to pray in John Mark’s house could not even believe that their prayers were being heard by God and so when they were told that Peter stood at the door, they thought it was his angel! Prayer is about the mightiest weapon God has given us and we need to recognize what an awesome weapon it is. Let’s put it to use in any situation that confronts us and be rest assured that God answers the prayers of His people.

Today's Practical: Suggest at least five ways that each of us can deepen our prayer life without needing to wait for trouble to awaken us.
