Genesis 18 – “A Promise and a Prayer”
Introduction
Genesis 18 is one of the most beautiful and intimate chapters in the life of Abraham. God appears to him in the form of three visitors, reaffirming the promise that Sarah will soon bear a son. Later in the same encounter, Abraham intercedes for Sodom, showing the compassion of a righteous heart.
This chapter reveals two great truths: God keeps His promises and He invites His people to intercede for
others. Faith not only believes God’s Word—it also reflects His heart.
Context
β Author: Moses, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
β Audience: The Israelites, learning about God’s personal relationship with Abraham and His justice and
mercy.
β Setting: Near Hebron, by the trees of Mamre, where Abraham’s tent was pitched.

intercession through Abraham’s prayer for Sodom.
Verse-by-Verse Overview (Simplified Summary)
Verses 1–2: Three visitors arrive.
The Lord appears to Abraham as three men. Abraham runs to meet them, bows low, and offers hospitality.

He prepares a meal for them with the best of what he has—bread, meat, milk, and curds.

Verses 16–19: God reveals His plan to Abraham.
As the men prepare to leave for Sodom, the Lord decides to tell Abraham what He is about to do because Abraham is His friend and will teach his family righteousness.
Lesson: God shares His heart with those who walk closely with Him. Friendship with God brings revelation.
Verses 20–22: The Lord reveals the sin of Sodom.
God tells Abraham that the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah is very great, and He is going to investigate it.
Lesson: God is just. He judges righteously and never acts unfairly.

Abraham pleads with God to spare the city if fifty, then forty-five, then thirty, twenty, and finally ten righteous people can be found. God agrees each time.
