THE MOUNTAIN AND THE VALLEY
KEY VERSE:``` "And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only" (MATTHEW 17:8).
Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain. There He was transfigured — His face shone like the sun, His clothes were white as light. Moses and Elijah appeared, and the Father spoke: “This is my beloved Son… hear ye him.” It was glory on the mountain. But immediately after, they came down to a valley where a demonized boy suffered, and the disciples could not help. Mountain moments are real, but valley work is waiting. And in both, Calvary is the bridge.
Three truths from the mountain and the valley: One, glory points to the Cross. “And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.” Luke tells us they spoke of His “decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem” (Luke 9:31). The glory of transfiguration led straight to the suffering of Calvary. Two, Jesus alone remains. “They saw no man, save Jesus only.” Prophets and law fade, but Christ stands. After every spiritual high, only Jesus satisfies. Three, faith moves what mountains reveal. In the valley, a desperate father cried, “Lord, have mercy.” The disciples failed for lack of faith, but Jesus said, “If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed… nothing shall be impossible unto you” (verse 20). The same Jesus who shines on the mountain stoops in the valley.
Are you coming down from a mountaintop today, or stuck in a valley that won’t move? Don’t build tents on the mountain. Don’t despair in the valley. Keep your eyes on Jesus only. The glory you saw on Sunday fuels the faith you need on Thursday. And remember: the One transfigured in light is the One who was disfigured at Calvary for you.
